We consider the Mellin transforms of certain Legendre functions based upon the ordinary and associated Legendre polynomials. We show that the transforms have polynomial factors whose zeros lie all on the critical line Re $s=1/2$. The polynomials with zeros only on the critical line are identified in terms of certain $_3F_2(1)$ hypergeometric functions. These polynomials possess the functional equation $p_n(s)=(-1)^{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor} p_n(1-s)$. Other hypergeometric representations are presented, as well as certain Mellin transforms of fractional part and fractional part-integer part functions. The results should be of interest to special function theory, combinatorial geometry, and analytic number theory.
We consider the Mellin transforms of certain Chebyshev functions based upon the Chebyshev polynomials. We show that the transforms have polynomial factors whose zeros lie all on the critical line or on the real line. The polynomials with zeros only on the critical line are identified in terms of certain $_3F_2(1)$ hypergeometric functions. Furthermore, we extend this result to a 1-parameter family of polynomials with zeros only on the critical line. These polynomials possess the functional equation $p_n(s;β)=(-1)^{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor} p_n(1-s;β)$. We then present the generalization to the Mell…
We present explicit expressions for the Mellin transforms of Laguerre and Hermite functions in terms of a variety of special functions. We show that many of the properties of the resulting functions, including functional equations and reciprocity laws, are direct consequences of transformation formulae of hypergeometric functions. Interest in these results is reinforced by the fact that polynomial or other factors of the Mellin transforms have zeros only on the critical line Re s = 1/2. We additionally present a simple-zero Proposition for the Mellin transform of the wavefunction of the D-dime…
The Mellin transform of quartic products of shifted Airy functions is evaluated in a closed form. Some particular cases expressed in terms of the logarithm function and complete elliptic integrals special values are presented.
We describe a method to compute the inverse Mellin transform of holonomic sequences, that is based on a method to compute the Mellin transform of holonomic functions. Both methods are implemented in the computer algebra package HarmonicSums.
We have derived some new results for the Mellin transform formulas, as well as for the Gauss hypergeometric function. Also, we have found the connection between the Legendre functions of the second kind. Some of the results obtained we used in quantum mechanics of two charged particles of a continuous spectrum.
Functional integrals are defined in terms of locally compact topological groups and their associated Banach-valued Haar integrals. This approach generalizes the functional integral scheme of Cartier and DeWitt-Morette. The definition allows a construction of functional Mellin transforms. In turn, the functional Mellin transforms can be used to define functional traces, logarithms, and determinants. The associated functional integrals are useful tools for probing function spaces in general and $C^\ast$-algebras in particular. Several interesting aspects are explored.
We explore the possibility of using the method of classical integral transforms to solve a class of $q$-difference-differential equations. The Laplace and the Mellin transform of $q$-derivatives are derived. The results show that the Mellin transform of the $q$-derivative resembles most closely the corresponding expression in classical analysis, and it could therefore be useful in solving certain $q$-difference equations.
We describe how the extension of a solver for linear differential equations by Kovacic's algorithm helps to improve a method to compute the inverse Mellin transform of holonomic sequences. The method is implemented in the computer algebra package HarmonicSums.
The Mellin transform is usually applied in probability theory to the product of independent random variables. In recent times the machinery of the Mellin transform has been adopted to describe the Lévy stable distributions, and more generally the probability distributions governed by generalized diffusion equations of fractional order in space and/or in time. In these cases the related stochastic processes are self-similar and are simply referred to as fractional diffusion processes. We provide some integral formulas involving the distributions of these processes that can be interpreted in ter…
We study renormalization in a kinetic scheme using the Hopf algebraic framework, first summarizing and recovering known results in this setting. Then we give a direct combinatorial description of renormalized amplitudes in terms of Mellin transform coefficients, featuring the universal property of rooted trees H_R. In particular, a special class of automorphisms of H_R emerges from the action of changing Mellin transforms on the Hochschild cohomology of perturbation series. Furthermore, we show how the Hopf algebra of polynomials carries a refined renormalization group property, implying its c…
It is shown that any convolution operator in the time domain can be represented exactly as a multiplication operator in the time-scale (wavelet) domain. The Mellin transform gives a one-to-one correspondence between frequency filters (multiplications in the frequency domain) and scale filters (multiplications in the scale domain), subject to the convergence of the defining integrals. The usual wavelet reconstruction theorem is a special case. Applications to the denoising of random signals are proposed. It is argued that the present method is more suitable for removing the effects of atmospher…
The product of any number of Legendre functions, under a restricted domain, can be expanded by the corresponding Legendre polynomials, with the coefficient being the sinc function. While an analogous expansion can be made for any number of Gengenbauer functions, it is not allowed for more than two Jacobi functions. To obtain such an expansion, the sampling theorem is of great availability.
In this paper we demonstrate how the Legendre transform connects the statements of Noether's theorem in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. We give precise definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian frameworks and discuss why these notions in the Hamiltonian framework are somewhat less rigid. We explore conditions which, when put on these definitions, allow the Legendre transform to set up a one-to-one correspondence between them. We also discuss how to preserve this correspondence when the definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities are …
We describe the low-temperature optical conductivity as a function of frequency for a quantum-mechanical system of electrons that hop along a polymer chain. To this end, we invoke the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger \emph{tight-binding} Hamiltonian for non-interacting spinless electrons on a one-dimensional (1D) lattice. Our goal is to show via asymptotics how the interband conductivity of this system behaves as the smallest energy bandgap tends to close. Our analytical approach includes: (i) the Kubo-type formulation for the optical conductivity with a nonzero damping due to microscopic collisions; (ii)…
We attempt to construct the exact univariate probability distributions for 2 x 2 quantum systems that yield the (balanced) univariate Hilbert-Schmidt determinantal moments <(|rho| |rho^{PT}|)^n>, obtained by Slater and Dunkl (J. Phys. A, 45, 095305 [2012]). To begin, we follow--to the extent possible--the Mellin transform-based approach of Penson and Zyczkowski in their study of Fuss-Catalan and Raney distributions (Phys. Rev. E, 83, 061118 [2011]). Further, we approximate the y-intercepts (separability/entanglement boundaries)--at which |rho^{PT}|=0-- of the associated probability distributio…
The Frobenius method can be used to represent solutions of ordinary differential equations by (generalized) power series. It is useful to have prior knowledge of the coefficients of this series. In this contribution we demonstrate that the magnitude of the coefficients can be predicted to surprisingly high accuracy by a Legendre transformation of WKB approximated solutions to the differential equations.
We present an argument which purports to show that the use of the standard Legendre transform in non-additive Statistical Mechanics is not appropriate. For concreteness, we use as paradigm, the case of systems which are conjecturally described by the (non-additive) Tsallis entropy. We point out the form of the modified Legendre transform that should be used, instead, in the non-additive thermodynamics induced by the Tsallis entropy. We comment on more general implications of this proposal for the thermodynamics of "complex systems".
Exceptional orthogonal polynomials are families of orthogonal polynomials that arise as solutions of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems. They generalize the classical families of Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi polynomials by allowing for polynomial sequences that miss a finite number of "exceptional" degrees. In this paper we introduce a new construction of multi-parameter exceptional Legendre polynomials by considering the isospectral deformation of the classical Legendre operator. Using confluent Darboux transformations and a technique from inverse scattering theory, we obtain a fully explic…
We show the robustness of the structure of Legendre transform in thermodynamics against the replacement of the standard linear average with the Kolmogorov-Nagumo nonlinear average to evaluate the expectation values of the macroscopic physical observables. The consequence of this statement is twofold: 1) the relationships between the expectation values and the corresponding Lagrange multipliers still hold in the present formalism; 2) the universality of the Gibbs equation as well as other thermodynamic relations are unaffected by the structure of the average used in the theory.
Although perturbative quantum field theory is highly successful, it possesses a number of well-known analytic problems, from ultraviolet and infrared divergencies to the divergence of the perturbative expansion itself. As a consequence, it has been difficult, for example, to prove with full rigor that the Legendre transform of the quantum effective action is the generating functional of connected graphs. Here, we give a rigorous proof of this central fact. To this end, we show that the Legendre transform can be re-defined purely combinatorially and that it ultimately reduces to a simple homolo…
We derive the structural relations between nested harmonic sums and the corresponding Mellin transforms of Nielsen integrals and harmonic polylogarithms at weight {\sf w = 6}. They emerge in the calculations of massless single--scale quantities in QED and QCD, such as anomalous dimensions and Wilson coefficients, to 3-- and 4--loop order. We consider the set of the multiple harmonic sums at weight six without index $\{-1\}$. This restriction is sufficient for all known physical cases. The structural relations supplement the algebraic relations, due to the shuffle product between harmonic sums,…
