In this work we define and study the relations between Lorentzian Manifolds given by the diffeomorphisms which map causal future directed vectors onto causal future directed vectors. This class of diffeomorphisms, called proper causal relations, contains as a subset the well-known group of conformal relations and are deeply linked to the so-called causal tensors. If two given Lorentzian manifolds are in mutual proper causal relation then they are said to be causally isomorphic: they are indistinguishable from the causal point of view. Finally, the concept of causal transformations for Lorentzian manifolds is introduced and its main mathematical properties briefly investigated.
We define and study a new kind of relation between two diffeomorphic Lorentzian manifolds called {\em causal relation}, which is any diffeomorphism characterized by mapping every causal vector of the first manifold onto a causal vector of the second. We perform a thorough study of the mathematical properties of causal relations and prove in particular that two given Lorentzian manifolds (say $V$ and $W$) may be causally related only in one direction (say from $V$ to $W$, but not from $W$ to $V$). This leads us to the concept of causally equivalent (or {\em isocausal} in short) Lorentzian manif…
We propose a formulation of a Lorentzian quantum geometry based on the framework of causal fermion systems. After giving the general definition of causal fermion systems, we deduce space-time as a topological space with an underlying causal structure. Restricting attention to systems of spin dimension two, we derive the objects of our quantum geometry: the spin space, the tangent space endowed with a Lorentzian metric, connection and curvature. In order to get the correspondence to differential geometry, we construct examples of causal fermion systems by regularizing Dirac sea configurations i…
We consider the usual causal structure $(I^+,J^+)$ on a spacetime, and a number of alternatives based on Minguzzi's $D^+$ and Sorkin and Woolgar's $K^+$, in the case where the spacetime metric is continuous, but not necessarily smooth. We compare the different causal structures based on three key properties, namely the validity of the push-up lemma, the openness of chronological futures, and the existence of limit causal curves. Recall that if the spacetime metric is smooth, $(I^+,J^+)$ satisfies all three properties, but that in the continuous case, the push-up lemma fails. Among the proposed…
In this work we introduce the taxicab and uniform products for Lorentzian pre-length spaces. We further use these concepts to endow the space $D(R\times_T X)$ of causal diamonds with a Lorentzian length space structure, closely relating its causal properties with its geometry as a metric space furnished with its associated Hausdorff distance. Among the general results, we show that this space is geodesic and globally hyperbolic for complete $X$.
I introduce a family of closeness functions between causal Lorentzian geometries of finite volume and arbitrary underlying topology. When points are randomly scattered in a Lorentzian manifold, with uniform density according to the volume element, some information on the topology and metric is encoded in the partial order that the causal structure induces among those points; one can then define closeness between Lorentzian geometries by comparing the sets of probabilities they give for obtaining the same posets. If the density of points is finite, one gets a pseudo-distance, which only compare…
Recently, the old notion of causal boundary for a spacetime V has been redefined in a consistent way. The computation of this boundary $\partial V$ for a standard conformally stationary spacetime V = R x M, suggests a natural compactification $M_B$ associated to any Riemannian metric on M or, more generally, to any Finslerian one. The corresponding boundary $\partial_B M$ is constructed in terms of Busemann-type functions. Roughly, $\partial_B M$ represents the set of all the directions in M including both, asymptotic and "finite" (or "incomplete") directions. This Busemann boundary $\partial_…
We introduce a canonical, compact topology, which we call weakly causal, naturally generated by the causal site of J. D. Christensen and L. Crane, a pointless algebraic structure motivated by certain problems of quantum gravity. We show that for every four-dimensional globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold there exists an associated causal site, whose weakly causal topology is co-compact with respect to the manifold topology and vice versa. Thus, the causal site has the full information about the topology of space-time, represented by the Lorentzian manifold. In addition, we show that there e…
Connes' functional formula of the Riemannian distance is generalized to the Lorentzian case using the so-called Lorentzian distance, the d'Alembert operator and the causal functions of a globally hyperbolic spacetime. As a step of the presented machinery, a proof of the almost-everywhere smoothness of the Lorentzian distance considered as a function of one of the two arguments is given. Afterwards, using a $C^*$-algebra approach, the spacetime causal structure and the Lorentzian distance are generalized into noncommutative structures giving rise to a Lorentzian version of part of Connes' nonco…
We develop area and volume comparison theorems for the evolution of spacelike, acausal, causally complete hypersurfaces in Lorentzian manifolds, where one has a lower bound on the Ricci tensor along timelike curves, and an upper bound on the mean curvature of the hypersurface. Using these results, we give a new proof of Hawking's singularity theorem.
We study the existence and cardinality of normal geodesics of different causal types on H(eisenberg)-type quaternion group equipped with the sub-Lorentzian metric. We present explicit formulas for geodesics and describe reachable sets by geodesics of different causal character. We compare results with the sub-Riemannian quaternion group and with the sub-Lorentzian Heisenberg group, showing that there are similarities and distinctions. We show that the geodesics on H-type quaternion groups with the sub-Lorentzian metric satisfy the equations describing the motion of a relativistic particle in a…
We show that maximal causal curves for a Lipschitz continuous Lorentzian metric admit a $\mathcal{C}^{1,1}$-parametrization and that they solve the geodesic equation in the sense of Filippov in this parametrization. Our proof shows that maximal causal curves are either everywhere lightlike or everywhere timelike. Furthermore, the proof demonstrates that maximal causal curves for an $α$-Hölder continuous Lorentzian metric admit a $\mathcal{C}^{1,\fracα{4}}$-parametrization.
We demonstrate the breakdown of several fundamentals of Lorentzian causality theory in low regularity. Most notably, chronological futures (defined naturally using locally Lipschitz curves) may be non-open, and may differ from the corresponding sets defined via piecewise $C^1$-curves. By refining the notion of a causal bubble from [CG:12],we characterize spacetimes for which such phenomena can occur, and also relate these to the possibility of deforming causal curves of positive length into timelike curves (push-up). The phenomena described here are, in particular, relevant for recent syntheti…
We define a new type of transformation for Lorentzian manifolds characterized by mapping every causal future-directed vector onto a causal future-directed vector. The set of all such transformations, which we call causal symmetries, has the structure of a submonoid. Some of their properties are investigated and we give necessary conditions for a vector field $\xiv$ to be the infinitesimal generator of a one-parameter group of causal symmetries. Some examples are discussed.
We consider pseudoconvexity properties in Lorentzian and Riemannian manifolds and their relationship in static spacetimes. We provide an example of a causally continuous and maximal null pseudoconvex spacetime that fails to be causally simple. Its Riemannian factor provides an analogous example of a manifold that is minimally pseudoconvex, but fails to be convex.
We study the interplay between the global causal and geometric structures of a spacetime $(M,g)$ and the features of a given smooth $\mathbb{R}$-action $ρ$ on $M$ whose orbits are all causal curves, building on classic results about Lie group actions on manifolds described by Palais. In the first part of this paper, we prove that $ρ$ is free and proper (so that $M$ splits topologically) provided that $(M,g)$ is strongly causal and $ρ$ does not have what we call weakly ancestral pairs, a notion which admits a natural interpretation in terms of "cosmic censorship". Accordingly, such condition ho…
We present a concise new definition of Finsler spacetimes that generalize Lorentzian metric manifolds and provide consistent backgrounds for physics. Extending standard mathematical constructions known from Finsler spaces we show that geometric objects like the Cartan non-linear connection and its curvature are well-defined almost everywhere on Finsler spacetimes, also on their null structure. This allows us to describe the complete causal structure in terms of timelike and null curves; these are essential to model physical observers and the propagation of light. We prove that the timelike dir…
Based on the recent work \cite{PII} we put forward a new type of transformation for Lorentzian manifolds characterized by mapping every causal future-directed vector onto a causal future-directed vector. The set of all such transformations, which we call causal symmetries, has the structure of a submonoid which contains as its maximal subgroup the set of conformal transformations. We find the necessary and sufficient conditions for a vector field $\xiv$ to be the infinitesimal generator of a one-parameter submonoid of pure causal symmetries. We speculate about possible applications to gravitat…
We introduce a class of causal manifolds which contains the globally hyperbolic spacetimes and we prove global propagation theorems for sheaves on such manifolds. As an application, we solve globally the Cauchy problem for hyperfunction solutions of hyperbolic systems.
We define a conformal reference frame, i.e., a special projection of the six-dimensional sky bundle of a Lorentzian manifold (or the five-dimensional twistor space) to a three-dimensional manifold. We construct an example, a conformal compactification, for Minkowski space. Based on the complex structure on the skies, we define the celestial transform of Lorentzian vectors, a kind of spinor correspondence. We express a 1-form generating the contact structure explicitly as a (line bundle)-valued form. We prove a theorem on the projection of this 1-form to the fiberwise normal bundle of a referen…
We investigate the causal relations in the space of states of almost commutative Lorentzian geometries. We fully describe the causal structure of a simple model based on the algebra $\mathcal{S}(\mathbb{R}^{1,1}) \otimes M_2(\mathbb{C})$, which has a non-trivial space of internal degrees of freedom. It turns out that the causality condition imposes restrictions on the motion in the internal space. Moreover, we show that the requirement of causality favours a unitary evolution in the internal space.
