New bounds on the rate distortion function of certain non-Gaussian sources, with a proportional-weighted mean-square error (MSE) distortion measure, are given. The growth, g, of the rate distortion function, as a result of changing from a non-weighted MSE distortion measure to a proportional-weighted distortion criterion is analyzed. It is shown that for a small distortion, d, the growth, g, and the difference between the rate distortion functions of a Gaussian memoryless source and a source with memory, both with the same marginal statistics and MSE distortion measure, share the same lower bound. Several examples and applications are also given.
We derive a simple general parametric representation of the rate-distortion function of a memoryless source, where both the rate and the distortion are given by integrals whose integrands include the minimum mean square error (MMSE) of the distortion $Δ=d(X,Y)$ based on the source symbol $X$, with respect to a certain joint distribution of these two random variables. At first glance, these relations may seem somewhat similar to the I-MMSE relations due to Guo, Shamai and Verdú, but they are, in fact, quite different. The new relations among rate, distortion, and MMSE are discussed from several…
A distortion-noise profile is a function indicating the maximum allowed source distortion value for each noise level in the channel. In this paper, the minimum energy required to achieve a distortion noise profile is studied for Gaussian sources which are transmitted robustly over Gaussian channels. We provide improved lower and upper bounds for the minimum energy behavior of the square-law profile using a family of lower bounds and our proposed coding scheme.
The reduced-rank method exploits the distortion-variance tradeoff to yield superior solutions for classic problems in statistical signal processing such as parameter estimation and filtering. The central idea is to reduce the variance of the solution at the expense of introducing a little distortion. In the context of parameter estimation, this yields an estimator whose sum of distortion plus variance is smaller than the variance of its undistorted counterpart. The method intrinsically results in an ordering mechanism for the singular vectors of the system matrix in the measurement model used …
In this work we investigate the behavior of the minimal rate needed in order to guarantee a given probability that the distortion exceeds a prescribed threshold, at some fixed finite quantization block length. We show that the excess coding rate above the rate-distortion function is inversely proportional (to the first order) to the square root of the block length. We give an explicit expression for the proportion constant, which is given by the inverse Q-function of the allowed excess distortion probability, times the square root of a constant, termed the excess distortion dispersion. This re…
We consider multiple description coding for the Gaussian source with K descriptions under the symmetric mean squared error distortion constraints, and provide an approximate characterization of the rate region. We show that the rate region can be sandwiched between two polytopes, between which the gap can be upper bounded by constants dependent on the number of descriptions, but independent of the exact distortion constraints. Underlying this result is an exact characterization of the lossless multi-level diversity source coding problem: a lossless counterpart of the MD problem. This connectio…
Optogenetics is an emerging field of neuroscience where neurons are genetically modified to express light-sensitive receptors that enable external control over when the neurons fire. Given the prominence of neuronal signaling within the brain and throughout the body, optogenetics has significant potential to improve the understanding of the nervous system and to develop treatments for neurological diseases. This paper uses a simple optogenetic model to compare the timing distortion between a randomly-generated target spike sequence and an externally-stimulated neuron spike sequence. The distor…
We revisit the sequential rate-distortion (SRD) trade-off problem for vector-valued Gauss-Markov sources with mean-squared error distortion constraints. We show via a counterexample that the dynamic reverse water-filling algorithm suggested by [1, eq. (15)] is not applicable to this problem, and consequently the closed form expression of the asymptotic SRD function derived in [1, eq. (17)] is not correct in general. Nevertheless, we show that the multidimensional Gaussian SRD function is semidefinite representable and thus it is readily computable.
In this paper, we consider a distributed remote source coding problem, where a sequence of observations of source vectors is available at the encoder. The problem is to specify the optimal rate for encoding the observations subject to a covariance matrix distortion constraint and in the presence of side information at the decoder. For this problem, we derive lower and upper bounds on the rate-distortion function (RDF) for the Gaussian case, which in general do not coincide. We then provide some cases, where the RDF can be derived exactly. We also show that previous results on specific instance…
The amount of information lost in sub-Nyquist sampling of a continuous-time Gaussian stationary process is quantified. We consider a combined source coding and sub-Nyquist reconstruction problem in which the input to the encoder is a noisy sub-Nyquist sampled version of the analog source. We first derive an expression for the mean squared error in the reconstruction of the process from a noisy and information rate-limited version of its samples. This expression is a function of the sampling frequency and the average number of bits describing each sample. It is given as the sum of two terms: Mi…
The source-coding problem with side information at the decoder is studied subject to a constraint that the encoder---to whom the side information is unavailable---be able to compute the decoder's reconstruction sequence to within some distortion. For discrete memoryless sources and finite single-letter distortion measures, an expression is given for the minimal description rate as a function of the joint law of the source and side information and of the allowed distortions at the encoder and at the decoder. The minimal description rate is also computed for a memoryless Gaussian source with squ…
The current best asymptotic lower bound on the minimum distance of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate is logarithmic in the blocklength. We propose a construction of quantum LDPC codes with fixed non-zero rate and prove that the minimum distance grows proportionally to the square root of the blocklength.
We consider a source coding problem with a network scenario in mind, and formulate it as a remote vector Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problem under covariance matrix distortions. We define a notion of minimum for two positive-definite matrices based on which we derive an explicit formula for the rate-distortion function (RDF). We then study the special cases and applications of this result. We show that two well-studied source coding problems, i.e. remote vector Gaussian Wyner-Ziv problems with mean-squared error and mutual information constraints are in fact special cases of our results. Finally, we ap…
In this paper, we develop {finite-time horizon} causal filters using the nonanticipative rate distortion theory. We apply the {developed} theory to {design optimal filters for} time-varying multidimensional Gauss-Markov processes, subject to a mean square error fidelity constraint. We show that such filters are equivalent to the design of an optimal \texttt{\{encoder, channel, decoder\}}, which ensures that the error satisfies {a} fidelity constraint. Moreover, we derive a universal lower bound on the mean square error of any estimator of time-varying multidimensional Gauss-Markov processes in…
The paper studies the scenario of wireless multicast with a single transmitter and a relay that deliver scalable source symbols to the receivers in a decode-and-forward (DF) fashion. With the end-to-end mean square error distortion (EED) as performance metric, we firstly derive the EED expression for the $L$-resolution scalable source symbol for any receiver. An optimization problem in minimizing the weighted EED is then formulated for finding the power allocations for all resolution layers at the transmitter and the relay. Due to nonlinearity of the formulations, we solve the formulated optim…
The distortion-rate performance of certain randomly-designed scalar quantizers is determined. The central results are the mean-squared error distortion and output entropy for quantizing a uniform random variable with thresholds drawn independently from a uniform distribution. The distortion is at most 6 times that of an optimal (deterministically-designed) quantizer, and for a large number of levels the output entropy is reduced by approximately (1-gamma)/(ln 2) bits, where gamma is the Euler-Mascheroni constant. This shows that the high-rate asymptotic distortion of these quantizers in an ent…
We investigate whether uncoded schemes are optimal for Gaussian sources on multiuser Gaussian channels. Particularly, we consider two problems: the first is to send correlated Gaussian sources on a Gaussian broadcast channel where each receiver is interested in reconstructing only one source component (or one specific linear function of the sources) under the mean squared error distortion measure; the second is to send correlated Gaussian sources on a Gaussian multiple-access channel, where each transmitter observes a noisy combination of the source, and the receiver wishes to reconstruct the …

In this paper we analyze the joint rate distortion function (RDF), for a tuple of correlated sources taking values in abstract alphabet spaces (i.e., continuous) subject to two individual distortion criteria. First, we derive structural properties of the realizations of the reproduction Random Variables (RVs), which induce the corresponding optimal test channel distributions of the joint RDF. Second, we consider a tuple of correlated multivariate jointly Gaussian RVs, $X_1 : Ω\rightarrow {\mathbb R}^{p_1}, X_2 : Ω\rightarrow {\mathbb R}^{p_2}$ with two square-error fidelity criteria, and we de…
This paper characterizes the second-order coding rates for lossy source coding with side information available at both the encoder and the decoder. We first provide non-asymptotic bounds for this problem and then specialize the non-asymptotic bounds for three different scenarios: discrete memoryless sources, Gaussian sources, and Markov sources. We obtain the second-order coding rates for these settings. It is interesting to observe that the second-order coding rate for Gaussian source coding with Gaussian side information available at both the encoder and the decoder is the same as that for G…
An encoder, subject to a rate constraint, wishes to describe a Gaussian source under squared error distortion. The decoder, besides receiving the encoder's description, also observes side information consisting of uncompressed source symbol subject to slow fading and noise. The decoder knows the fading realization but the encoder knows only its distribution. The rate-distortion function that simultaneously satisfies the distortion constraints for all fading states was derived by Heegard and Berger. A layered encoding strategy is considered in which each codeword layer targets a given fading st…
The problem of sending two correlated vector Gaussian sources over a bandwidth-matched two-user scalar Gaussian broadcast channel is studied in this work, where each receiver wishes to reconstruct its target source under a covariance distortion constraint. We derive a lower bound on the optimal tradeoff between the transmit power and the achievable reconstruction distortion pair. Our derivation is based on a new bounding technique which involves the introduction of appropriate remote sources. Furthermore, it is shown that this lower bound is achievable by a class of hybrid schemes for the spec…
The minimum mean-square error of the estimation of a signal where observed from the additive white Gaussian noise (WGN) channel's output, is analyzed. It is assumed that the channel input's signal is composed of a (normalized) sum of N narrowband, mutually independent waves. It is shown that if N goes to infinity, then for any fixed signal energy to noise energy ratio (no mater how big) both the causal minimum mean-square error CMMSE and the non-causal minimum mean-square error MMSE converge to the signal energy at a rate which is proportional to 1/N.
Sequential rate-distortion (SRD) theory provides a framework for studying the fundamental trade-off between data-rate and data-quality in real-time communication systems. In this paper, we consider the SRD problem for multi-dimensional time-varying Gauss-Markov processes under mean-square distortion criteria. We first revisit the sensor-estimator separation principle, which asserts that considered SRD problem is equivalent to a joint sensor and estimator design problem in which data-rate of the sensor output is minimized while the estimator's performance satisfies the distortion criteria. We t…
The joint nonanticipative rate distortion function (NRDF) for a tuple of random processes with individual fidelity criteria is considered. Structural properties of optimal test channel distributions are derived. Further, for the application example of the joint NRDF of a tuple of jointly multivariate Gaussian Markov processes with individual square-error fidelity criteria, a realization of the reproduction processes which induces the optimal test channel distribution is derived, and the corresponding joint NRDF is characterized. The analysis of the simplest example, of a tuple of scalar correl…
We study a new class of codes for lossy compression with the squared-error distortion criterion, designed using the statistical framework of high-dimensional linear regression. Codewords are linear combinations of subsets of columns of a design matrix. Called a Sparse Superposition or Sparse Regression codebook, this structure is motivated by an analogous construction proposed recently by Barron and Joseph for communication over an AWGN channel. For i.i.d Gaussian sources and minimum-distance encoding, we show that such a code can attain the Shannon rate-distortion function with the optimal er…
We study the compression of data in the case where the useful information is contained in a set rather than a vector, i.e., the ordering of the data points is irrelevant and the number of data points is unknown. Our analysis is based on rate-distortion theory and the theory of finite point processes. We introduce fundamental information-theoretic concepts and quantities for point processes and present general lower and upper bounds on the rate-distortion function. To enable a comparison with the vector setting, we concretize our bounds for point processes of fixed cardinality. In particular, w…
This paper studies the performance of sparse regression codes for lossy compression with the squared-error distortion criterion. In a sparse regression code, codewords are linear combinations of subsets of columns of a design matrix. It is shown that with minimum-distance encoding, sparse regression codes achieve the Shannon rate-distortion function for i.i.d. Gaussian sources $R^*(D)$ as well as the optimal excess-distortion exponent. This completes a previous result which showed that $R^*(D)$ and the optimal exponent were achievable for distortions below a certain threshold. The proof of the…

Consider a Gaussian memoryless multiple source with $m$ components with joint probability distribution known only to lie in a given class of distributions. A subset of $k \leq m$ components are sampled and compressed with the objective of reconstructing all the $m$ components within a specified level of distortion under a mean-squared error criterion. In Bayesian and nonBayesian settings, the notion of universal sampling rate distortion function for Gaussian sources is introduced to capture the optimal tradeoffs among sampling, compression rate and distortion level. Single-letter characterizat…
