In this paper, we consider a distributed remote source coding problem, where a sequence of observations of source vectors is available at the encoder. The problem is to specify the optimal rate for encoding the observations subject to a covariance matrix distortion constraint and in the presence of side information at the decoder. For this problem, we derive lower and upper bounds on the rate-distortion function (RDF) for the Gaussian case, which in general do not coincide. We then provide some cases, where the RDF can be derived exactly. We also show that previous results on specific instances of this problem can be generalized using our results. We finally show that if the distortion measure is the mean squared error, or if it is replaced by a certain mutual information constraint, the optimal rate can be derived from our main result.
The distributed remote source coding (so-called CEO) problem is studied in the case where the underlying source, not necessarily Gaussian, has finite differential entropy and the observation noise is Gaussian. The main result is a new lower bound for the sum-rate-distortion function under arbitrary distortion measures. When specialized to the case of mean-squared error, it is shown that the bound exactly mirrors a corresponding upper bound, except that the upper bound has the source power (variance) whereas the lower bound has the source entropy power. Bounds exhibiting this pleasing duality o…
We study a lossy source coding problem for an arbitrarily varying remote source (AVRS) which was proposed in a prior work. An AVRS transmits symbols, each generated in an independent and identically distributed manner, which are sought to be estimated at the decoder. These symbols are remotely generated, and the encoder and decoder observe noise corrupted versions received through a two-output noisy channel. This channel is an arbitrarily varying channel controlled by a jamming adversary. We assume that the adversary knows the coding scheme as well as the source data non-causally, and hence, c…
Integer-forcing source coding has been proposed as a low-complexity method for compression of distributed correlated Gaussian sources. In this scheme, each encoder quantizes its observation using the same fine lattice and reduces the result modulo a coarse lattice. Rather than directly recovering the individual quantized signals, the decoder first recovers a full-rank set of judiciously chosen integer linear combinations of the quantized signals, and then inverts it. It has been observed that the method works very well for "most" but not all source covariance matrices. The present work quantif…

The problem of secure source coding with multiple terminals is extended by considering a remote source whose noisy measurements are the correlated random variables used for secure source reconstruction. The main additions to the problem include 1) all terminals noncausally observe a noisy measurement of the remote source; 2) a private key is available to all legitimate terminals; 3) the public communication link between the encoder and decoder is rate-limited; and 4) the secrecy leakage to the eavesdropper is measured with respect to the encoder input, whereas the privacy leakage is measured w…
The $L$-link binary Chief Executive Officer (CEO) problem under logarithmic loss is investigated in this paper. A quantization splitting technique is applied to convert the problem under consideration to a $(2L-1)$-step successive Wyner-Ziv (WZ) problem, for which a practical coding scheme is proposed. In the proposed scheme, low-density generator-matrix (LDGM) codes are used for binary quantization while low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are used for syndrome generation; the decoder performs successive decoding based on the received syndromes and produces a soft reconstruction of the remo…
The classical problem of supervised learning is to infer an accurate predictor of a target variable $Y$ from a measured variable $X$ by using a finite number of labeled training samples. Motivated by the increasingly distributed nature of data and decision making, in this paper we consider a variation of this classical problem in which the prediction is performed remotely based on a rate-constrained description $M$ of $X$. Upon receiving $M$, the remote node computes an estimate $\hat Y$ of $Y$. We follow the recent minimax approach to study this learning problem and show that it corresponds t…
Enhanced processing power in the cloud allows constrained devices to offload costly computations: for instance, complex data analytics tasks can be computed by remote servers. Remote execution calls for a new compression paradigm that optimizes performance on the analytics task within a rate constraint, instead of the traditional rate-distortion framework which focuses on source reconstruction. This paper considers a simple binary hypothesis testing scenario where the resource constrained client (transmitter) performs fixed-length single-shot compression on data sampled from one of two distrib…
In this paper we propose a new framework for distributed source coding of structured sources, such as sparse signals. Our framework capitalizes on recent advances in the theory of linear inverse problems and signal representations using incoherent projections. Our approach acquires and quantizes incoherent linear measurements of the signal, which are represented as separate bitplanes. Each bitplane is coded using a distributed source code of the appropriate rate, and transmitted. The decoder, starts from the least significant biplane and, using a prediction of the signal as side information, i…
The device-to-device communication-aided fog radio access network, referred to as \textit{D2D-aided F-RAN}, takes advantage of caching at enhanced remote radio heads (eRRHs) and D2D proximity for improved system performance. For D2D-aided F-RAN, we develop a framework that exploits the cached contents at eRRHs, their transmission rates/powers, and previously received contents by different users to deliver the requesting contents to users with a minimum completion time. Given the intractability of the completion time minimization problem, we formulate it at each transmission by approximating th…
One of the most promising techniques for network-wide interference management necessitates a redesign of the network architecture known as cloud radio access network (CRAN). The cloud is responsible for coordinating multiple Remote Radio Heads (RRHs) and scheduling users to their radio resources blocks (RRBs). The transmit frame of each RRH consists of several orthogonal RRBs each maintained at a certain power level (PL). While previous works considered a vanilla version in which each RRB can serve a single user, this paper proposes mixing the flows of multiple users using instantly decodable …
In this paper, we consider the design of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmitter which simultaneously functions as a MIMO radar and a base station for downlink multiuser communications. In addition to a power constraint, we require the covariance of the transmit waveform be equal to a given optimal covariance for MIMO radar, to guarantee the radar performance. With this constraint, we formulate and solve the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing problem for multiuser transmit beamforming via convex optimization. Considering that the interference cannot be complet…

We consider a rate-constrained contextual multi-armed bandit (RC-CMAB) problem, in which a group of agents are solving the same contextual multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem. However, the contexts are observed by a remotely connected entity, i.e., the decision-maker, that updates the policy to maximize the returned rewards, and communicates the arms to be sampled by the agents to a controller over a rate-limited communications channel. This framework can be applied to personalized ad placement, whenever the content owner observes the website visitors, and hence has the context, but needs to tra…
In this paper consider a two user multiple access channel with noisy feedback. There are two senders with independent messages who transmit symbols across an additive white Gaussian channel to a receiver, who in turn sends back a symbol which is received by the two senders through two independent noisy Gaussian channels. We consider the case when the feedback is active i.e. the receiver actively encodes the feedback using a linear state process. We pose this as a problem of linear sequential coding at the senders and the receiver to minimize the terminal mean square probability of error at the…
