Second order asymptotics of fixed-length source coding and intrinsic randomness is discussed with a constant error constraint. There was a difference between optimal rates of fixed-length source coding and intrinsic randomness, which never occurred in the first order asymptotics. In addition, the relation between uniform distribution and compressed data is discussed based on this fact. These results are valid for general information sources as well as independent and identical distributions. A universal code attaining the second order optimal rate is also constructed.
We construct a joint coordination-channel polar coding scheme for strong coordination of actions between two agents $\mathsf X$ and $\mathsf Y$, which communicate over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) such that the joint distribution of actions follows a prescribed probability distribution. We show that polar codes are able to achieve our previously established inner bound to the strong noisy coordination capacity region and thus provide a constructive alternative to a random coding proof. Our polar coding scheme also offers a constructive solution to a channel simulation problem where a DM…
We consider a scenario wherein two parties Alice and Bob are provided $X_{1}^{n}$ and $X_{2}^{n}$ -- samples that are IID from a PMF $P_{X_1 X_2}$. Alice and Bob can communicate to Charles over (noiseless) communication links of rate $R_1$ and $R_2$ respectively. Their goal is to enable Charles generate samples $Y^{n}$ such that the triple $(X_{1}^{n},X_{2}^{n},Y^{n})$ has a PMF that is close, in total variation, to $\prod P_{X_1 X_2 Y}$. In addition, the three parties may posses pairwise shared common randomness at rates $C_1$ and $C_2$. We address the problem of characterizing the set of rat…
This paper considers the problem of variable-length intrinsic randomness. We propose the average variational distance as the performance criterion from the viewpoint of a dual relationship with the problem formulation of variable-length resolvability. Previous study has derived the general formula of the $ε$-variable-length resolvability. We derive the general formula of the $ε$-variable-length intrinsic randomness. Namely, we characterize the supremum of the mean length under the constraint that the value of the average variational distance is smaller than or equal to a constant $ε$. Our resu…
We study the problem of strong coordination of the actions of two nodes $X$ and $Y$ that communicate over a discrete memoryless channel (DMC) such that the actions follow a prescribed joint probability distribution. We propose two novel random coding schemes and a polar coding scheme for this noisy strong coordination problem, and derive inner bounds for the respective strong coordination capacity region. The first scheme is a joint coordination-channel coding scheme that utilizes the randomness provided by the DMC to reduce the amount of local randomness required to generate the sequence of a…
The principle of maximum entropy (Maxent) is often used to obtain prior probability distributions as a method to obtain a Gibbs measure under some restriction giving the probability that a system will be in a certain state compared to the rest of the elements in the distribution. Because classical entropy-based Maxent collapses cases confounding all distinct degrees of randomness and pseudo-randomness, here we take into consideration the generative mechanism of the systems considered in the ensemble to separate objects that may comply with the principle under some restriction and whose entropy…
We develop a low-complexity polar coding scheme for the discrete memoryless broadcast channel with confidential messages under strong secrecy and randomness constraints. Our scheme extends previous work by using an optimal rate of uniform randomness in the stochastic encoder, and avoiding assumptions regarding the symmetry or degraded nature of the channels. The price paid for these extensions is that the encoder and decoders are required to share a secret seed of negligible size and to increase the block length through chaining. We also highlight a close conceptual connection between the prop…
In this letter, we consider a Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control system where feedback occurs over a noiseless binary channel and derive lower bounds on the minimum communication cost (quantified via the channel bitrate) required to attain a given control performance. We assume that at every time step an encoder can convey a packet containing a variable number of bits over the channel to a decoder at the controller. Our system model provides for the possibility that the encoder and decoder have shared randomness, as is the case in systems using dithered quantizers. We define two extremal …
We consider an experimental setup of three USRPs that implement a wiretap channel, two USRPs are the legitimate players Alice and Bob, while the third USRP is the eavesdropper, whose position we vary to evaluate information leakage. The experimented channels are close to slow fading channels, and coset coding of lattice constellations is used for transmission, allowing to introduce controlled randomness at the transmitter. Simulation and measurement results show to which extent coset coding can provide confidentiality, as a function of Eve's position, and the amount of randomness used.
Consider a sequence $X^n$ of length $n$ emitted by a Discrete Memoryless Source (DMS) with unknown distribution $p_X$. The objective is to construct a lossless source code that maps $X^n$ to a sequence $\widehat{Y}^m$ of length $m$ that is indistinguishable, in terms of Kullback-Leibler divergence, from a sequence emitted by another DMS with known distribution $p_Y$. The main result is the existence of a coding scheme that performs this task with an optimal ratio $m/n$ equal to $H(X)/H(Y)$, the ratio of the Shannon entropies of the two distributions, as $n$ goes to infinity. The coding scheme …
We study the problem of achieving strong secrecy over wiretap channels at negligible cost, in the sense of maintaining the overall communication rate of the same channel without secrecy constraints. Specifically, we propose and analyze two source-channel coding architectures, in which secrecy is achieved by multiplexing public and confidential messages. In both cases, our main contribution is to show that secrecy can be achieved without compromising communication rate and by requiring only randomness of asymptotically vanishing rate. Our first source-channel coding architecture relies on a mod…
For a multi-source multi-terminal noiseless network, the key-dissemination problem involves the task of multicasting a secret key K from the network sources to its terminals. As in secure multicast network-coding, in the key-dissemination problem the source nodes have access to independent randomness and, as the network is noiseless, the resulting key K is a function of the sources' information. However, different from traditional forms of multicast, in key-dissemination the key K need not consist of source messages, but rather may be any function of the information generated at the sources, a…
We evaluate the asymptotics of equivocations, their exponents as well as their second-order coding rates under various Rényi information measures. Specifically, we consider the effect of applying a hash function on a source and we quantify the level of non-uniformity and dependence of the compressed source from another correlated source when the number of copies of the sources is large. Unlike previous works that use Shannon information measures to quantify randomness, information or uniformity, we define our security measures in terms of a more general class of information measures--the Rényi…

To learn intrinsic low-dimensional structures from high-dimensional data that most discriminate between classes, we propose the principle of Maximal Coding Rate Reduction ($\text{MCR}^2$), an information-theoretic measure that maximizes the coding rate difference between the whole dataset and the sum of each individual class. We clarify its relationships with most existing frameworks such as cross-entropy, information bottleneck, information gain, contractive and contrastive learning, and provide theoretical guarantees for learning diverse and discriminative features. The coding rate can be ac…
