This paper explores the use of genetic algorithms for the design of networks, where the demands on the network fluctuate in time. For varying network constraints, we find the best network using the standard genetic algorithm operators such as inversion, mutation and crossover. We also examine how the choice of genetic algorithm operators affects the quality of the best network found. Such networks typically contain redundancy in servers, where several servers perform the same task and pleiotropy, where servers perform multiple tasks. We explore this trade-off between pleiotropy versus redundancy on the cost versus reliability as a measure of the quality of the network.
A new model for evolving Evolutionary Algorithms is proposed in this paper. The model is based on the Linear Genetic Programming (LGP) technique. Every LGP chromosome encodes an EA which is used for solving a particular problem. Several Evolutionary Algorithms for function optimization, the Traveling Salesman Problem, and the Quadratic Assignment Problem are evolved by using the considered model. Numerical experiments show that the evolved Evolutionary Algorithms perform similarly and sometimes even better than standard approaches for several well-known benchmarking problems.
We apply two evolutionary search algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to the design of Cellular Automata (CA) that can perform computational tasks requiring global coordination. In particular, we compare search efficiency for PSO and GAs applied to both the density classification problem and to the novel generation of 'chaotic' CA. Our work furthermore introduces a new variant of PSO, the Binary Global-Local PSO (BGL-PSO).
In this paper, we apply genetic algorithms to the field of electoral studies. Forecasting election results is one of the most exciting and demanding tasks in the area of market research, especially due to the fact that decisions have to be made within seconds on live television. We show that the proposed method outperforms currently applied approaches and thereby provide an argument to tighten the intersection between computer science and social science, especially political science, further. We scrutinize the performance of our algorithm's runtime behavior to evaluate its applicability in the…
We apply genetic programming techniques to the `shepherding' problem, in which a group of one type of animal (sheep dogs) attempts to control the movements of a second group of animals (sheep) obeying flocking behavior. Our genetic programming algorithm evolves an expression tree that governs the movements of each dog. The operands of the tree are hand-selected features of the simulation environment that may allow the dogs to herd the sheep effectively. The algorithm uses tournament-style selection, crossover reproduction, and a point mutation. We find that the evolved solutions generalize wel…
Random weight change (RWC) algorithm is extremely component and robust for the hardware implementation of neural networks. RWC and Genetic algorithm (GA) are well known methodologies used for optimizing and learning the neural network (NN). Individually, each of these two algorithms has its strength and weakness along with separate objectives. However, recently, researchers combine these two algorithms for better learning and optimization of NN. In this paper, we proposed a methodology by combining the RWC and GA, namely Genetic Random Weight Change (GRWC), as well as demonstrate a seminal way…
GoTools is a program which solves life & death problems in the game of Go. This paper describes experiments using a Genetic Algorithm to optimize heuristic weights used by GoTools' tree-search. The complete set of heuristic weights is composed of different subgroups, each of which can be optimized with a suitable fitness function. As a useful side product, an MPI interface for FreePascal was implemented to allow the use of a parallelized fitness function running on a Beowulf cluster. The aim of this exercise is to optimize the current version of GoTools, and to make tools available in preparat…
We formulate the search for phenomenological models of synaptic plasticity as an optimization problem. We employ Cartesian genetic programming to evolve biologically plausible human-interpretable plasticity rules that allow a given network to successfully solve tasks from specific task families. While our evolving-to-learn approach can be applied to various learning paradigms, here we illustrate its power by evolving plasticity rules that allow a network to efficiently determine the first principal component of its input distribution. We demonstrate that the evolved rules perform competitively…

Feature selection is one of the most challenging issues in machine learning, especially while working with high dimensional data. In this paper, we address the problem of feature selection and propose a new approach called Evolving Fast and Slow. This new approach is based on using two parallel genetic algorithms having high and low mutation rates, respectively. Evolving Fast and Slow requires a new parallel architecture combining an automatic system that evolves fast and an effortful system that evolves slow. With this architecture, exploration and exploitation can be done simultaneously and …
The application of genetic algorithms (GAs) to many optimization problems in organizations often results in good performance and high quality solutions. For successful and efficient use of GAs, it is not enough to simply apply simple GAs (SGAs). In addition, it is necessary to find a proper representation for the problem and to develop appropriate search operators that fit well to the properties of the genotype encoding. The representation must at least be able to encode all possible solutions of an optimization problem, and genetic operators such as crossover and mutation should be applicable…

Genetic improvement is a search technique that aims to improve a given acceptable solution to a problem. In this paper, we present the novel use of genetic improvement to find problem-specific optimized LLVM pass sequences. We develop a pass-level patch representation in the linear genetic programming framework, Shackleton, to evolve the modifications to be applied to the default optimization pass sequences. Our GI-evolved solution has a mean of 3.7% runtime improvement compared to the -O3 optimization level in the default code generation options which optimizes on runtime. The proposed GI met…

We propose a framework of genetic algorithms which use multi-level hierarchies to solve an optimization problem by searching over the space of simpler objective functions. We solve a variant of Travelling Salesman Problem called \texttt{soft-TSP} and show that when the constraints on the overall objective function are changed the algorithm adapts to churn out solutions for the changed objective. We use this idea to speed up learning by systematically altering the constraints to find a more globally optimal solution. We also use this framework to solve polynomial regression where the actual obj…

The algorithm underpinning Shackleton is discussed, with an emphasis on the effects of different features unique to the framework when applied to LLVM pass sequences. Combined with analysis of different hyperparameter settings, we report the results on automatically opti…

This paper demonstrates the use of genetic algorithms for evolving: 1) a grandmaster-level evaluation function, and 2) a search mechanism for a chess program, the parameter values of which are initialized randomly. The evaluation function of the program is evolved by learning from databases of (human) grandmaster games. At first, the organisms are evolved to mimic the behavior of human grandmasters, and then these organisms are further improved upon by means of coevolution. The search mechanism is evolved by learning from tactical test suites. Our results show that the evolved program outperfo…
Solving the indefinite Helmholtz equation is not only crucial for the understanding of many physical phenomena but also represents an outstandingly-difficult benchmark problem for the successful application of numerical methods. Here we introduce a new approach for evolving efficient preconditioned iterative solvers for Helmholtz problems with multi-objective grammar-guided genetic programming. Our approach is based on a novel context-free grammar, which enables the construction of multigrid preconditioners that employ a tailored sequence of operations on each discretization level. To find sol…
Data visualisation is a key tool in data mining for understanding big datasets. Many visualisation methods have been proposed, including the well-regarded state-of-the-art method t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbour Embedding. However, the most powerful visualisation methods have a significant limitation: the manner in which they create their visualisation from the original features of the dataset is completely opaque. Many domains require an understanding of the data in terms of the original features; there is hence a need for powerful visualisation methods which use understandable models. In t…
Recently it has been proved that simple GP systems can efficiently evolve the conjunction of $n$ variables if they are equipped with the minimal required components. In this paper, we make a considerable step forward by analysing the behaviour and performance of the GP system for evolving a Boolean function with unknown components, i.e., the function may consist of both conjunctions and disjunctions. We rigorously prove that if the target function is the conjunction of $n$ variables, then the RLS-GP using the complete truth table to evaluate program quality evolves the exact target function in…
In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for automatically finding new chaotic attractors through a computational intelligence technique known as multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP). We apply this technique to the case of the Lorenz attractor and evolve several new chaotic attractors based on the basic Lorenz template. The MGGP algorithm automatically finds new nonlinear expressions for the different state variables starting from the original Lorenz system. The Lyapunov exponents of each of the attractors are calculated numerically based on the time series of the state variables using t…

Clustering is a difficult and widely-studied data mining task, with many varieties of clustering algorithms proposed in the literature. Nearly all algorithms use a similarity measure such as a distance metric (e.g. Euclidean distance) to decide which instances to assign to the same cluster. These similarity measures are generally pre-defined and cannot be easily tailored to the properties of a particular dataset, which leads to limitations in the quality and the interpretability of the clusters produced. In this paper, we propose a new approach to automatically evolving similarity functions fo…

Vectorial Genetic Programming (Vec-GP) extends GP by allowing vectors as input features along regular, scalar features, using them by applying arithmetic operations component-wise or aggregating vectors into scalars by some aggregation function. Vec-GP also allows aggregating vectors only over a limited segment of the vector instead of the whole vector, which offers great potential but also introduces new parameters that GP has to optimize. This paper formalizes an optimization problem to analyze different strategies for optimizing a window for aggregation functions. Different strategies are p…

When training Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) there is a large emphasis on creating efficient optimization algorithms and highly accurate networks. The state-of-the-art method of optimizing the networks is done by using gradient descent algorithms, such as Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). However, there are some limitations presented when using gradient descent methods. The major drawback is the lack of exploration, and over-reliance on exploitation. Hence, this research aims to analyze an alternative approach to optimizing neural network (NN) weights, with the use of population-based m…

The commonplace method used in optimization simulations, such as for optimizing the optical spacer layers' thicknesses, is the parameter sweep. Our simulation study shows that the implementation of a meta-heuristic method like the genetic algorithm results in a significantly faster and accurate search method when compared to the brute-force parameter sweep method in both single and multi-layer opti…
Boolean functions are mathematical objects with numerous applications in domains like coding theory, cryptography, and telecommunications. Finding Boolean functions with specific properties is a complex combinatorial optimization problem where the search space grows super-exponentially with the number of input variables. One common property of interest is the nonlinearity of Boolean functions. Constructing highly nonlinear Boolean functions is difficult as it is not always known what nonlinearity values can be reached in practice. In this paper, we investigate the effects of the genetic operat…

Deep Genetic Net uses genetic algorithms along with deep neural networks to address the hyperparameter optimization prob…
This work aims at optimizing injection networks, which consist in adding a set of long-range links (called bypass links) in mobile multi-hop ad hoc networks so as to improve connectivity and overcome network partitioning. To this end, we rely on small-world network properties, that comprise a high clustering coefficient and a low characteristic path length. We investigate the use of two genetic algorithms (generational and steady-state) to optimize three instances of this topology control problem and present results that show initial evidence of their capacity to solve it.
A general approach to optimizing fast processes using a gender genetic algorithm is described. Male subpopulations undergo large mutations and more strong selection compared to female individuals from another subset. This separation allows combining the rapid adaptability of the entire population to changes due to the variation of the male subpopulation with fixation of adaptability in the female part. The advantage of the effect of additional individual learning in the for…
Collaborative Filtering (CF) is widely used in recommender systems to model user-item interactions. With the great success of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) in various fields, advanced works recently have proposed several DNN-based models for CF, which have been proven effective. However, the neural networks are all designed manually. As a consequence, it requires the designers to develop expertise in both CF and DNNs, which limits the application of deep learning methods in CF and the accuracy of recommended results. In this paper, we introduce the genetic algorithm into the process of designing…
Machine Learning (ML) is becoming increasingly important in daily life. However, there are problems where it is difficult to find a suitable topology. Therefore, Topology and Weight Evolving Artificial Neural Network (TWEANN) algorithms have been developed that can find ANN topologies and weights using genetic algorithms. A well-known downside for large-scale problems is that TWEANN algorithms often evolve inefficient…

It usually takes an expert with deep knowledge, and trials and errors. Genetic algorithms have been used in hyperparameter optimizations. However, traditional genetic algorithms with fixed-length chromosomes may not be a good fit for optimizing deep learning hyperparameters, because deep learning models have variable number of hyperparameters depending on the model depth. By updating the surrogate model after new recommendations have been evaluated by the user, we enable the model itself to evolve towards the u…

More recently, researchers have been looking at Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection and evolution as a means of enhancing current approaches using machine learning. In 1960, the first genetic algorithm was developed by John H. Holland and his student. We explore the mathematical intuition of th…
This paper characterizes the inherent power of evolutionary algorithms. This power depends on the computational properties of the genetic encoding. With some encodings, two parents recombined with a simple crossover operator can sample from an arbitrary distribution of child phenotypes. Such encodings are termed \emph{expressive encodings} in this paper. Universal function approximators, including popular evolutionary substrates of genetic programming and neural networks, can be used to construct expressive encodings. Remarkably, this approach need not be applied only to domains where the phen…
