In this paper we design a stream cipher that uses the algebraic structure of the multiplicative group $\bbbz_p^*$ (where p is a big prime number used in ElGamal algorithm), by defining a quasigroup of order $p-1$ and by doing quasigroup string transformations. The cryptographical strength of the proposed stream cipher is based on the fact that breaking it would be at least as hard as solving systems of multivariate polynomial equations modulo big prime number $p$ which is NP-hard problem and there are no known fast randomized or deterministic algorithms for solving it. Unlikely the speed of known ciphers that work in $\bbbz_p^*$ for big prime numbers $p$, the speed of this stream cipher both in encryption and decryption phase is comparable with the fastest symmetric-key stream ciphers.
In this paper we show that a recently published finite automaton stream cipher can be considered as a quasigroup based stream cipher. Some additional properties of the discussed cipher are also given.
We present a new quasigroup based block encryption system with and without cipher-block-chaining. We compare its performance against Advanced Encryption Standard-256 (AES256) bit algorithm using the NIST statistical test suite (NIST-STS) that tests for randomness of a sequence. Since it is well known that a good encryption algorithm must destroy any statistical properties of the input sequence and produce an output close to a true random sequence, the NIST-STS suite results provide a good test bench. In almost all tests from the suite the proposed algorithm performs better than AES256.
We have designed a new class of public key algorithms based on quasigroup string transformations using a specific class of quasigroups called multivariate quadratic quasigroups (MQQ). Our public key algorithm is a bijective mapping, it does not perform message expansions and can be used both for encryption and signatures. The public key consist of n quadratic polynomials with n variables where n=140, 160, ... . A particular characteristic of our public key algorithm is that it is very fast and highly parallelizable. More concretely, it has the speed of a typical modern symmetric block cipher -…
In this paper, we propose a quasigroup based block cipher design. The round functions of the encryption and decryption algorithms use quasigroup based string transformations. We show the robustness of the design against the standard differential, linear and algebraic cryptanalytic attacks. We also provide detailed statistical analysis using NIST test suite in CBC, CFB, OFB, and CTR modes of operation. We compare the statistical experimental results with the AES-128 in the same setup and conclude that the randomizing ability of our algorithm is equivalent to that of AES-128.
A During last two decades, there has been a prolific growth in the chaos based image encryption algorithms. Up to an extent these algorithms have been able to provide an alternative to exchange large media files (images and videos) over the networks in a secure way. However, there have been some issues with the implementation of chaos based image ciphers in practice. One of them is reduced/small key space due to the fact that chaotic behavior is only observed for certain range of system parameters/initial conditions of the chaotic system used in such algorithms. To overcome this difficulty, we…
This paper deals with the merger of the two lightweight stream ciphers: A5by1 and Trivium. The idea is to make the key stream generation more secure and to remove the attacks of the individual algorithms. The bits generated by the Trivium cipher will act as the input of the A5by1 cipher. The registers used in the A5by1 cipher will be filled by the output bits of the Trivium cipher. The three registers will then be connected to generate an output which will be our required key stream.
In this paper, we will propose a new type of cipher named DICING_csb, which is derived from our previous stream cipher DICING. It has applied a stream of subkey and an encryption form of block ciphers, so it may be viewed as a combinative of stream cipher and block cipher. Hence, the new type of cipher has fast rate like a stream cipher and need no MAC.
The rotation operator is frequently used in several stream ciphers, including HC-128, Rabbit, and Salsa20, the final candidates for eSTREAM. This is because the rotation operator (ROT) is simple but has very good dispersibility. In this paper, we propose a disperse rotation operator (DRT), which has the same structure as ROT but has better dispersibility. In addition, the use of DRT instead of ROT has shown that the quality of the output stream of all three stream ciphers was significantly improved. However, the use of DRT instead of ROT in the HC-128 stream cipher prevents the expansion of di…
We follow two main objectives in this article. On the one hand, we introduce a security model called LORBACPA$^+$ for self-synchronized stream ciphers which is stronger than the blockwise LOR-IND-CPA, where we show that standard constructions as delayed CBC or similar existing self-synchronized modes of operation are not secure in this stronger model. Then, on the other hand, following contributions of G.~Millérioux et.al., we introduce a new self-synchronized stream cipher and prove its security in LORBACPA$^+$ model.
We propose a novel high-speed stream cipher encryption scheme based on the true random key generated by a chaotic semiconductor laser. A 5-Gbits/s non-return-to-zero plaintext is successfully encrypted and decrypted using this cryptography. The scheme can be applied in the areas of real-time high-speed physical encryption.
Sosemanuk is a new synchronous software-oriented stream cipher, corresponding to Profile 1 of the ECRYPT call for stream cipher primitives. Its key length is variable between 128 and 256 bits. It ac- commodates a 128-bit initial value. Any key length is claimed to achieve 128-bit security. The Sosemanuk cipher uses both some basic design principles from the stream cipher SNOW 2.0 and some transformations derived from the block cipher SERPENT. Sosemanuk aims at improv- ing SNOW 2.0 both from the security and from the efficiency points of view. Most notably, it uses a faster IV-setup procedure. …
In this paper, we will propose a new synchronous stream cipher named DICING, which can be viewed as a clock-controlled one but with a new mechanism of altering steps. It has satisfactory performance and there have not been found weakness for the known attacks, the key sizes can be 128bits and 256bits respectively.
Stream ciphers play an important role in those applications where high throughput remains critical and resources are very restricted e.g. in Europe and North America, A5/1 is widely used stream cipher that ensure confidentiality of conversations in GSM mobile phones. However careful security analysis of such cipher is very important due to widespread practical applicability. The basic building blocks used in the design of A5/1 are linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs). Algebraic attacks are new and very powerful tool to cryptanalyse LFSRs based stream ciphers even non-linear combiner are con…
In Europe and North America, the most widely used stream cipher to ensure privacy and confidentiality of conversations in GSM mobile phones is the A5/1. In this paper, we present a new attack on the A5/1 stream cipher with an average time complexity of 2^(48.5), which is much less than the brute-force attack with a complexity of 2^(64). The attack has a 100% success rate and requires about 5.65GB storage. We provide a detailed description of our new attack along with its implementation and results.
The contribution of Stream ciphers to cryptography is immense. For fast encryption, stream ciphers are preferred to block ciphers due to their XORing operation, which is easier and faster to implement. In this paper we present a matrix based stream cipher, in which a m x n binary matrix single handedly performs the work of m parallel LFSRs. The resistivity of the proposed stream cipher to various possible attacks are analyzed. Interestingly the output of the matrix multiplication can otherwise be used as a parallel bit/byte generator, useful for encrypting video streams.
A stream cipher was implemented on a FPGA. The keystream, for some authors the most important element, was developed using an algorithm based on Bernoullis chaotic map. When dynamic systems are digitally implemented, a normal degradation appears and disturbs their behavior; for such reason, a mechanism was needed. The proposed mechanism gives a solution for degradation issue and its implementation is not complicated. Finally, the implemented cipher includes 8 stages and 2 pseudo-random number generators (PRNG), such cipher was tested using NIST testes. Once its designing stage, it was implemen…
Lightweight stream ciphers are highly demanded in IoT applications. In order to optimize the hardware performance, a new class of stream cipher has been proposed. The basic idea is to employ a single Galois NLFSR with maximum period to construct the cipher. As a representative design of this kind of stream ciphers, Espresso is based on a 256-bit Galois NLFSR initialized by a 128-bit key. The $2^{256}-1$ maximum period is assured because the Galois NLFSR is transformed from a maximum length LFSR. However, we propose a Galois-to-Fibonacci transformation algorithm and successfully transform the G…
Weak pseudorandom functions (wPRFs) found an important application as main building blocks for leakage-resilient ciphers (EUROCRYPT'09). Several security bounds, based on different techniques, were given to these stream ciphers. The security loss in these reduction-based proofs is always polynomial, but has not been studied in detail. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we present a clear comparison of quantitatively different security bounds in the literature. Second, we revisit the current proof techniques and answer the natural question of how far we are from meaningful and provable se…
In order to improve the efficiency of using ZUC primitives, we give two AEAD (Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data) modes for them, ZUC-GXM and ZUC-MUR. They are suitable for ZUC (ZUC-128) and two cases of ZUC-256. The former is a nonce-based AEAD, which is following the GCM framework. The latter is a nonce misuse-resistant one which is based on the framework of SIV variance, providing more robust applications for ZUC family stream ciphers.
This paper discusses mixing of chaotic systems as a dependable method for secure communication. Distribution of the entropy function for steady state as well as plaintext input sequences are analyzed. It is shown that the mixing of chaotic sequences results in a sequence that does not have any state dependence on the information encrypted by them. The generated output states of such a cipher approach the theoretical maximum for both complexity measures and cycle length. These features are then compared with some popular ciphers.
In this letter we assert that we have reconstructed the nonlinear filter function of LILI-128 stream cipher on IBM notebook PC using MATLAB. Our reconstruction need approximately 2^12~2^13 and the attack consumes 5825.016 sec (using tic and toc sentences of MATLAB) or 5825.016/3600=1.6181hours. We got the expression of the nonlinear filter function fd of Lili-128 which has 46 items from liner items to nonlinear items based on complexity, the phase space reconstruction, Clustering and nonlinear prediction. We have verified our reconstruction result correctness by simulating the overview of Lili…
In this paper we propose a multi-map orbit hopping chaotic stream cipher that utilizes the idea of spread spectrum mechanism for secure digital communications and fundamental chaos characteristics of mixing, unpredictable, and extremely sensitive to initial conditions. The design, key and subkeys, and detail implementation of the system are addressed. A variable number of well studied chaotic maps form a map bank. And the key determines how the system hops between multiple orbits, and it also determines the number of maps, the number of orbits for each map, and the number of sample points for …
A new large class of $2^{100}$ possible stream ciphers as keystream generators KSGs, is presented. The sample cipher-structure-concept is based on randomly selecting a set of 16 maximum-period Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers (NLFSRs). A non-linear combining function is merging the 16 selected sequences. All resulting stream ciphers with a total state-size of 223 bits are designed to result with the same security level and have a linear complexity exceeding $2^{81}$ and a period exceeding $2^{161}$. A Secret Unknown Cipher (SUC) is created randomly by selecting one cipher from that class of …
In this paper, we propose and evaluate a method for generating key-dependent feedback configurations (KDFC) for $σ$-LFSRs. $σ$-LFSRs with such configurations can be applied to any stream cipher that uses a word-based LFSR. Here, a configuration generation algorithm uses the secret key(K) and the initialization vector (IV) to generate a feedback configuration. We have mathematically analysed the feedback configurations generated by this method. As a test case, we have applied this method on SNOW 2.0 and have studied its impact on resistance to various attacks. Further, we have also tested the g…
The paper develops a novel approach to stream cipher design: Both the state update function and the output function of the corresponding pseudorandom generators are compositions of arithmetic and bitwise logical operations, which are standard instructions of modern microprocessors. Moreover, both the state update function and the output function are being modified dynamically during the encryption. Also, these compositions could be keyed, so the only information available to an attacker is that these functions belong to some exponentially large class. The paper shows that under rather loose co…
Recent years have shown that more than ever governments and intelligence agencies try to control and bypass the cryptographic means used for the protection of data. Backdooring encryption algorithms is considered as the best way to enforce cryptographic control. Implementation backdoors (at the protocol/implementation/ma\-nagement level) are generally considered. In this paper we propose to address the most critical issue of backdoors: mathematical backdoors or by-design backdoors, which are put directly at the mathematical design of the encryption algorithm. Considering a particular family (a…
In this paper, a new stream cipher is designed as a clock-controlled one, but with a new mechanism of altering steps based on system theory in such a way that the structures used in it are resistant to conventional attacks. Our proposed algorithm (PALS) uses the main key with the length of 256 bits and a 32-bit message key. The most important criteria considered in designing the PALS are resistance to known attacks, maximum period, high linear complexity, and good statistical properties. As a result, the output keystream is very similar to the perfectly random sequences and resistant to conven…
There can be performance and vulnerability concerns with block ciphers, thus stream ciphers can used as an alternative. Although many symmetric key stream ciphers are fairly resistant to side-channel attacks, cryptographic artefacts may exist in memory. This paper identifies a significant vulnerability within OpenSSH and OpenSSL and which involves the discovery of cryptographic artefacts used within the ChaCha20 cipher. This can allow for the cracking of tunneled data using a single targeted memory extraction. With this, law enforcement agencies and/or malicious agents could use the vulnerabil…
The Solitaire cipher was designed by Bruce Schneier as a plot point in the novel Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. The cipher is intended to fit the archetype of a modern stream cipher whilst being implementable by hand using a standard deck of cards with two jokers. We find a model for repetitions in the keystream in the stream cipher Solitaire that accounts for the large majority of the repetition bias. Other phenomena merit further investigation. We have proposed modifications to the cipher that would reduce the repetition bias, but at the cost of increasing the complexity of the cipher (pr…
In today's world the use of computer and telecommunications networking is essential for human life. Among these, mobile tools and devices due to availability, have found a special impact on everyone life. This feature addition to providing sample facilities such as financial transactions at any place and time has raised the Sensitivities about security of these devices. In order to provide security, numerous techniques have been proposed which due to the limitations of mobile devices; an algorithm should be taken that have the ability to function for light weight ubiquitous computing. In this …
The control of the cryptography is more than ever a recurrent issue. As the current international regulation does not apply in the signatory countries, the concept of enforcing backdoors in encryption system is reborn with more strength. This paper deals with a particular class of stream cipher backdoors. This class, under a different form, has been widely used by the industry in the 80s and 90s in the context of the export control rules imposed by the US to the Western countries. We propose here a new system -- called BSEA-2, with a 128-bit secret key -- which is a seemingly minor modificatio…
The growing potential of modern communications needs the use of secure means to protect information from unauthorized access and use during transmission. In general, encryption a message using cryptography techniques and then hidden a message with a steganography methods provides an additional layer of protection. Furthermore, using these combination reduces the chance of finding the hidden message. This paper proposed a system which combines schemes of cryptography with steganography for hiding secret messages and to add more complexity for steganography. The proposed system secret message en…
A common approach to protect confidential information is to use a stream cipher which combines plain text bits with a pseudo-random bit sequence. Among the existing stream ciphers, Non-Linear Feedback Shift Register (NLFSR)-based ones provide the best trade-off between cryptographic security and hardware efficiency. In this paper, we show how to further improve the hardware efficiency of Grain stream cipher. By transforming the NLFSR of Grain from its original Fibonacci configuration to the Galois configuration and by introducing a clock division block, we double the throughput of the 80 and 1…
In this paper we introduce a new chaotic stream cipher Mmohocc which utilizes the fundamental chaos characteristics. The designs of the major components of the cipher are given. Its cryptographic properties of period, auto- and cross-correlations, and the mixture of Markov processes and spatiotemporal effects are investigated. The cipher is resistant to the related-key-IV attacks, Time/Memory/Data tradeoff attacks, algebraic attacks, and chosen-text attacks. The keystreams successfully passed two batteries of statistical tests and the encryption speed is comparable with RC4.
We present a stream cipher based on a chaotic dynamical system. Using a chaotic trajectory sampled under certain rules in order to avoid any attempt to reconstruct the original one, we create a binary pseudo-random keystream that can only be exactly reproduced by someone that has fully knowledge of the communication system parameters formed by a transmitter and a receiver and sharing the same initial conditions. The plaintext is XORed with the keystream creating the ciphertext, the encrypted message. This keystream passes the NISTs randomness test and has been implemented in a videoconference …
A wide family of nonlinear sequence generators, the so-called clock-controlled shrinking generators, has been analyzed and identified with a subset of linear cellular automata. The algorithm that converts the given generator into a linear model based on automata is very simple and can be applied in a range of practical interest. Due to the linearity of these automata as well as the characteristics of this class of generators, a cryptanalytic approach can be proposed. Linear cellular structures easily model keystream generators with application in stream cipher cryptography.
We propose two parity-based concurrent error detection schemes for the Quarterround of the ChaCha stream cipher to protect from transient and permanent faults. They offer a trade-off between implementation overhead and error coverage. The second approach can detect any odd-weight error on the in-/output and intermediate signals of a Quarterround, while the first one requires less logic.
Many real-world cyber-physical systems (CPS) use proprietary cipher algorithms. In this work, we describe an easy-to-use black-box security evaluation approach to measure the strength of proprietary ciphers without having to know the algorithms. We quantify the strength of a cipher by measuring how difficult it is for a neural network to mimic the cipher algorithm. We define new metrics (e.g., cipher match rate, training data complexity and training time complexity) that are computed from neural networks to quantitatively represent the cipher strength. This measurement approach allows us to di…
In this paper we model a class of stream and block ciphers as systems of (ordinary) explicit difference equations over a finite field. We call this class "difference ciphers" and we show that ciphers of application interest, as for example systems of LFSRs with a combiner, Trivium and Keeloq, belong to the class. By using Difference Algebra, that is, the formal theory of difference equations, we can properly define and study important properties of these ciphers, such as their invertibility and periodicity. We describe then general cryptanalytic methods for difference ciphers that follow from …
Parallel supercomputer-based Monte Carlo and stochastic simulations require pseudorandom number generators that can produce distinct pseudorandom streams across many independent processes. We propose a scalable class of parallel and vectorizable pseudorandom number generators based on a non-cryptographic version of the RSA public-key exponentiation cipher. Our method generates uniformly distributed IEEE double-precision floating point pseudorandom sequences on $[0,1)$ by encrypting pseudorandom sequences of 64-bit integer messages by modular exponentiation. The advantages of the method are: th…
The previous work showed that the Y00 protocol could stay secure with the eavesdropper's guessing probability on the secret keys being strictly less than one under an unlimitedly long known-plaintext attack with quantum memory. However, an assumption that at least a fast correlation attack is completely disabled by irregular mapping. The present study shows that the Y00 protocol can be information-theoretic secure under any quantum-computational crypto-analyses if the Y00 system is well designed. The Y00 protocol directly encrypts messages with short secret keys expanded into pseudo-random run…
MV3 is a new word based stream cipher for encrypting long streams of data. A direct adaptation of a byte based cipher such as RC4 into a 32- or 64-bit word version will obviously need vast amounts of memory. This scaling issue necessitates a look for new components and principles, as well as mathematical analysis to justify their use. Our approach, like RC4's, is based on rapidly mixing random walks on directed graphs (that is, walks which reach a random state quickly, from any starting point). We begin with some well understood walks, and then introduce nonlinearity in their steps in order to…
In this paper we study the security of the Bluetooth stream cipher E0 from the viewpoint it is a "difference stream cipher", that is, it is defined by a system of explicit difference equations over the finite field GF(2). This approach highlights some issues of the Bluetooth encryption such as the invertibility of its state transition map, a special set of 14 bits of its 132-bit state which when guessed implies linear equations among the other bits and finally a small number of spurious keys, with 83 guessed bits, which are compatible with a keystream of about 60 bits. Exploiting these issues,…
Fault analysis is a powerful attack to stream ciphers. Up to now, the major idea of fault analysis is to simplify the cipher system by injecting some soft faults. We call it soft fault analysis. As a hardware-oriented stream cipher, Trivium is weak under soft fault analysis. In this paper we consider another type of fault analysis of stream cipher, which is to simplify the cipher system by injecting some hard faults. We call it hard fault analysis. We present the following results about such attack to Trivium. In Case 1 with the probability not smaller than 0.2396, the attacker can obtain 69 b…
