The control of the cryptography is more than ever a recurrent issue. As the current international regulation does not apply in the signatory countries, the concept of enforcing backdoors in encryption system is reborn with more strength. This paper deals with a particular class of stream cipher backdoors. This class, under a different form, has been widely used by the industry in the 80s and 90s in the context of the export control rules imposed by the US to the Western countries. We propose here a new system -- called BSEA-2, with a 128-bit secret key -- which is a seemingly minor modification of BSEA-1, a system proposed in \cite{filiol_bsea1}. BSEA-2 illustrates, in a simple and didactic~\textemdash~it has been also designed for a MSc cryptanalysis course~\textemdash~but efficient way the concept of key-dependent cryptographic security. The aim is to keep control on encryption means that a country/provider could provide to another country/client for which the secret key are also provided. With such systems, changing the key class results in downgrading the cryptographic security.
In this paper we show that a recently published finite automaton stream cipher can be considered as a quasigroup based stream cipher. Some additional properties of the discussed cipher are also given.
This paper deals with the merger of the two lightweight stream ciphers: A5by1 and Trivium. The idea is to make the key stream generation more secure and to remove the attacks of the individual algorithms. The bits generated by the Trivium cipher will act as the input of the A5by1 cipher. The registers used in the A5by1 cipher will be filled by the output bits of the Trivium cipher. The three registers will then be connected to generate an output which will be our required key stream.
In this paper, we will propose a new type of cipher named DICING_csb, which is derived from our previous stream cipher DICING. It has applied a stream of subkey and an encryption form of block ciphers, so it may be viewed as a combinative of stream cipher and block cipher. Hence, the new type of cipher has fast rate like a stream cipher and need no MAC.
In this paper we design a stream cipher that uses the algebraic structure of the multiplicative group $\bbbz_p^*$ (where p is a big prime number used in ElGamal algorithm), by defining a quasigroup of order $p-1$ and by doing quasigroup string transformations. The cryptographical strength of the proposed stream cipher is based on the fact that breaking it would be at least as hard as solving systems of multivariate polynomial equations modulo big prime number $p$ which is NP-hard problem and there are no known fast randomized or deterministic algorithms for solving it. Unlikely the speed of kn…
The rotation operator is frequently used in several stream ciphers, including HC-128, Rabbit, and Salsa20, the final candidates for eSTREAM. This is because the rotation operator (ROT) is simple but has very good dispersibility. In this paper, we propose a disperse rotation operator (DRT), which has the same structure as ROT but has better dispersibility. In addition, the use of DRT instead of ROT has shown that the quality of the output stream of all three stream ciphers was significantly improved. However, the use of DRT instead of ROT in the HC-128 stream cipher prevents the expansion of di…
We follow two main objectives in this article. On the one hand, we introduce a security model called LORBACPA$^+$ for self-synchronized stream ciphers which is stronger than the blockwise LOR-IND-CPA, where we show that standard constructions as delayed CBC or similar existing self-synchronized modes of operation are not secure in this stronger model. Then, on the other hand, following contributions of G.~Millérioux et.al., we introduce a new self-synchronized stream cipher and prove its security in LORBACPA$^+$ model.
We propose a novel high-speed stream cipher encryption scheme based on the true random key generated by a chaotic semiconductor laser. A 5-Gbits/s non-return-to-zero plaintext is successfully encrypted and decrypted using this cryptography. The scheme can be applied in the areas of real-time high-speed physical encryption.
We formally study iterated block ciphers that alternate between two sequences of independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) rounds. It is demonstrated that, in some cases the effect of alternating increases security, while in other cases the effect may strictly decrease security relative to the corresponding product of one of its component sequences. As this would appear to contradict conventional wisdom based on the ideal cipher approximation, we introduce new machinery for provable security comparisons. The comparisons made here simultaneously establish a coherent ordering of security …
Sosemanuk is a new synchronous software-oriented stream cipher, corresponding to Profile 1 of the ECRYPT call for stream cipher primitives. Its key length is variable between 128 and 256 bits. It ac- commodates a 128-bit initial value. Any key length is claimed to achieve 128-bit security. The Sosemanuk cipher uses both some basic design principles from the stream cipher SNOW 2.0 and some transformations derived from the block cipher SERPENT. Sosemanuk aims at improv- ing SNOW 2.0 both from the security and from the efficiency points of view. Most notably, it uses a faster IV-setup procedure. …
In this paper, we will propose a new synchronous stream cipher named DICING, which can be viewed as a clock-controlled one but with a new mechanism of altering steps. It has satisfactory performance and there have not been found weakness for the known attacks, the key sizes can be 128bits and 256bits respectively.
Stream ciphers play an important role in those applications where high throughput remains critical and resources are very restricted e.g. in Europe and North America, A5/1 is widely used stream cipher that ensure confidentiality of conversations in GSM mobile phones. However careful security analysis of such cipher is very important due to widespread practical applicability. The basic building blocks used in the design of A5/1 are linear feedback shift registers (LFSRs). Algebraic attacks are new and very powerful tool to cryptanalyse LFSRs based stream ciphers even non-linear combiner are con…
In Europe and North America, the most widely used stream cipher to ensure privacy and confidentiality of conversations in GSM mobile phones is the A5/1. In this paper, we present a new attack on the A5/1 stream cipher with an average time complexity of 2^(48.5), which is much less than the brute-force attack with a complexity of 2^(64). The attack has a 100% success rate and requires about 5.65GB storage. We provide a detailed description of our new attack along with its implementation and results.
In this paper we introduce a new chaotic stream cipher Mmohocc which utilizes the fundamental chaos characteristics. The designs of the major components of the cipher are given. Its cryptographic properties of period, auto- and cross-correlations, and the mixture of Markov processes and spatiotemporal effects are investigated. The cipher is resistant to the related-key-IV attacks, Time/Memory/Data tradeoff attacks, algebraic attacks, and chosen-text attacks. The keystreams successfully passed two batteries of statistical tests and the encryption speed is comparable with RC4.
The contribution of Stream ciphers to cryptography is immense. For fast encryption, stream ciphers are preferred to block ciphers due to their XORing operation, which is easier and faster to implement. In this paper we present a matrix based stream cipher, in which a m x n binary matrix single handedly performs the work of m parallel LFSRs. The resistivity of the proposed stream cipher to various possible attacks are analyzed. Interestingly the output of the matrix multiplication can otherwise be used as a parallel bit/byte generator, useful for encrypting video streams.
We investigate, in the Shannon model, the security of constructions corresponding to double and (two-key) triple DES. That is, we consider F_{k1}(F_{k2}(.)) and F_{k1}(F_{k2}^{-1}(F_{k1}(.))) with the component functions being ideal ciphers. This models the resistance of these constructions to ``generic'' attacks like meet in the middle attacks. We obtain the first proof that composition actually increases the security of these constructions in some meaningful sense. We compute a bound on the probability of breaking the double cipher as a function of the number of computations of the base ciph…
A stream cipher was implemented on a FPGA. The keystream, for some authors the most important element, was developed using an algorithm based on Bernoullis chaotic map. When dynamic systems are digitally implemented, a normal degradation appears and disturbs their behavior; for such reason, a mechanism was needed. The proposed mechanism gives a solution for degradation issue and its implementation is not complicated. Finally, the implemented cipher includes 8 stages and 2 pseudo-random number generators (PRNG), such cipher was tested using NIST testes. Once its designing stage, it was implemen…
Weak pseudorandom functions (wPRFs) found an important application as main building blocks for leakage-resilient ciphers (EUROCRYPT'09). Several security bounds, based on different techniques, were given to these stream ciphers. The security loss in these reduction-based proofs is always polynomial, but has not been studied in detail. The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we present a clear comparison of quantitatively different security bounds in the literature. Second, we revisit the current proof techniques and answer the natural question of how far we are from meaningful and provable se…
Lightweight stream ciphers are highly demanded in IoT applications. In order to optimize the hardware performance, a new class of stream cipher has been proposed. The basic idea is to employ a single Galois NLFSR with maximum period to construct the cipher. As a representative design of this kind of stream ciphers, Espresso is based on a 256-bit Galois NLFSR initialized by a 128-bit key. The $2^{256}-1$ maximum period is assured because the Galois NLFSR is transformed from a maximum length LFSR. However, we propose a Galois-to-Fibonacci transformation algorithm and successfully transform the G…
Caesar cipher is an ancient, elementary method of encrypting plain text message to protect it from adversaries. However, with the advent of powerful computers there is a need for increasing the complexity of such algorithms. In this paper, we contribute in the area of classical cryptography by providing a modified approach and expanded version for Caesar cipher using knowledge of mathematics and computer science. To increase the strength of this classical encryption technique we use the concepts of affine ciphers, transposition ciphers and randomized substitution techniques to create a cipher …
This paper develops a new algorithm to improve the security of RC4. Given that RC4 cipher is widely used in the wireless communication and has some weaknesses in the security of RC4 cipher, our idea is based on the combination of the RC4 and the poly alphabetic cipher Vigenère to give a new and more secure algorithm which we called VRC4. In this technique the plain text is encrypted using the classic RC4 cipher then re-encrypt the resulted cipher text using Vigenère cipher to be a more secure cipher text. For simplicity, we have implemented our new algorithm in Java Script taking into consider…
In order to improve the efficiency of using ZUC primitives, we give two AEAD (Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data) modes for them, ZUC-GXM and ZUC-MUR. They are suitable for ZUC (ZUC-128) and two cases of ZUC-256. The former is a nonce-based AEAD, which is following the GCM framework. The latter is a nonce misuse-resistant one which is based on the framework of SIV variance, providing more robust applications for ZUC family stream ciphers.
This paper explains the recent developments in security and encryption. The Butterfly cipher and quantum cryptography are reviewed and compared. Examples of their relative uses are discussed and suggestions for future developments considered. In addition application to network security together with a substantial review of classification of encryption systems and a summary of security weaknesses are considered.
This paper discusses mixing of chaotic systems as a dependable method for secure communication. Distribution of the entropy function for steady state as well as plaintext input sequences are analyzed. It is shown that the mixing of chaotic sequences results in a sequence that does not have any state dependence on the information encrypted by them. The generated output states of such a cipher approach the theoretical maximum for both complexity measures and cycle length. These features are then compared with some popular ciphers.
In this letter we assert that we have reconstructed the nonlinear filter function of LILI-128 stream cipher on IBM notebook PC using MATLAB. Our reconstruction need approximately 2^12~2^13 and the attack consumes 5825.016 sec (using tic and toc sentences of MATLAB) or 5825.016/3600=1.6181hours. We got the expression of the nonlinear filter function fd of Lili-128 which has 46 items from liner items to nonlinear items based on complexity, the phase space reconstruction, Clustering and nonlinear prediction. We have verified our reconstruction result correctness by simulating the overview of Lili…
Privacy is one of the key issues addressed by information Security. Through cryptographic encryption methods, one can prevent a third party from understanding transmitted raw data over unsecured channel during signal transmission. The cryptographic methods for enhancing the security of digital contents have gained high significance in the current era. Breach of security and misuse of confidential information that has been intercepted by unauthorized parties are key problems that information security tries to solve. This paper sets out to contribute to the general body of knowledge in the area …
In this paper we propose a multi-map orbit hopping chaotic stream cipher that utilizes the idea of spread spectrum mechanism for secure digital communications and fundamental chaos characteristics of mixing, unpredictable, and extremely sensitive to initial conditions. The design, key and subkeys, and detail implementation of the system are addressed. A variable number of well studied chaotic maps form a map bank. And the key determines how the system hops between multiple orbits, and it also determines the number of maps, the number of orbits for each map, and the number of sample points for …
A new large class of $2^{100}$ possible stream ciphers as keystream generators KSGs, is presented. The sample cipher-structure-concept is based on randomly selecting a set of 16 maximum-period Nonlinear Feedback Shift Registers (NLFSRs). A non-linear combining function is merging the 16 selected sequences. All resulting stream ciphers with a total state-size of 223 bits are designed to result with the same security level and have a linear complexity exceeding $2^{81}$ and a period exceeding $2^{161}$. A Secret Unknown Cipher (SUC) is created randomly by selecting one cipher from that class of …
Many real-world cyber-physical systems (CPS) use proprietary cipher algorithms. In this work, we describe an easy-to-use black-box security evaluation approach to measure the strength of proprietary ciphers without having to know the algorithms. We quantify the strength of a cipher by measuring how difficult it is for a neural network to mimic the cipher algorithm. We define new metrics (e.g., cipher match rate, training data complexity and training time complexity) that are computed from neural networks to quantitatively represent the cipher strength. This measurement approach allows us to di…
In this paper, we propose and evaluate a method for generating key-dependent feedback configurations (KDFC) for $σ$-LFSRs. $σ$-LFSRs with such configurations can be applied to any stream cipher that uses a word-based LFSR. Here, a configuration generation algorithm uses the secret key(K) and the initialization vector (IV) to generate a feedback configuration. We have mathematically analysed the feedback configurations generated by this method. As a test case, we have applied this method on SNOW 2.0 and have studied its impact on resistance to various attacks. Further, we have also tested the g…
We initiate the provable related-key security treatment for models of practical Feistel ciphers. In detail, we consider Feistel networks with four whitening keys $w_i(k)$ ($i=0,1,2,3$) and round-functions of the form $f(γ_i(k)\oplus X)$, where $k$ is the main-key, $w_i$ and $γ_i$ are efficient transformations, and $f$ is a public ideal function or permutation that the adversary is allowed to query. We investigate conditions on the key-schedules that are sufficient for security against XOR-induced related-key attacks up to $2^{n/2}$ adversarial queries. When the key-schedules are non-linear, we…
In order to keep the data secret, various techniques have been implemented to encrypt and decrypt the secret data. Cryptography is committed to the security of content, i.e. it cannot be restored with a given ciphertext. Steganography is to hiding the existence of a communication channel within a stego. However, it has been difficult to construct a cipher (cypher) that simultaneously satisfy both channel and content security for secure communication. Inspired by the Cardan grille, this paper presents a new generative framework for grille cipher. A digital cardan grille is used for message encr…
The paper develops a novel approach to stream cipher design: Both the state update function and the output function of the corresponding pseudorandom generators are compositions of arithmetic and bitwise logical operations, which are standard instructions of modern microprocessors. Moreover, both the state update function and the output function are being modified dynamically during the encryption. Also, these compositions could be keyed, so the only information available to an attacker is that these functions belong to some exponentially large class. The paper shows that under rather loose co…
Recently, an image encryption scheme based on chaotic standard and logistic maps was proposed. This paper studies the security of the scheme and shows that it can be broken with only one chosen-plaintext. Some other security defects of the scheme are also reported.
In recent years, several protocols for password-based authenticated key exchange have been proposed. These protocols aim to be secure even though the sample space of passwords may be small enough to be enumerated by an off-line adversary. In Eurocrypt 2000, Bellare, Pointcheval and Rogaway (BPR) presented a model and security definition for authenticated key exchange. They claimed that in the ideal-cipher model (random oracles), the two-flow protocol at the core of Encrypted Key Exchange (EKE) is secure. Bellare and Rogaway suggested several instantiations of the ideal cipher in their proposal…
Most cryptosystems are defined over finite algebraic structures where arithmetic operations are performed modulo natural numbers. This applies to private key as well as to public key ciphers. No secure cryptosystems defined over the field of real numbers are known. In this work, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing secure symmetric key ciphers defined over the field of real numbers. We consider the security of ciphers introduced in a previous work and based on solving linear and non-linear equations numerically. We complement the design of those ciphers to satisfy the requirements of…
Recent years have shown that more than ever governments and intelligence agencies try to control and bypass the cryptographic means used for the protection of data. Backdooring encryption algorithms is considered as the best way to enforce cryptographic control. Implementation backdoors (at the protocol/implementation/ma\-nagement level) are generally considered. In this paper we propose to address the most critical issue of backdoors: mathematical backdoors or by-design backdoors, which are put directly at the mathematical design of the encryption algorithm. Considering a particular family (a…
We consider the problem of constructing an unconditionally secure cipher for the case when the key length is less than the length of the encrypted message. (Unconditional security means that a computationally unbounded adversary cannot obtain information about the encrypted message without the key.) In this article, we propose data compression and randomization techniques combined with entropically-secure encryption. The resulting cipher can be used for encryption in such a way that the key length does not depend on the entropy or the length of the encrypted message; instead, it is determined …
In this paper, a new stream cipher is designed as a clock-controlled one, but with a new mechanism of altering steps based on system theory in such a way that the structures used in it are resistant to conventional attacks. Our proposed algorithm (PALS) uses the main key with the length of 256 bits and a 32-bit message key. The most important criteria considered in designing the PALS are resistance to known attacks, maximum period, high linear complexity, and good statistical properties. As a result, the output keystream is very similar to the perfectly random sequences and resistant to conven…
There can be performance and vulnerability concerns with block ciphers, thus stream ciphers can used as an alternative. Although many symmetric key stream ciphers are fairly resistant to side-channel attacks, cryptographic artefacts may exist in memory. This paper identifies a significant vulnerability within OpenSSH and OpenSSL and which involves the discovery of cryptographic artefacts used within the ChaCha20 cipher. This can allow for the cracking of tunneled data using a single targeted memory extraction. With this, law enforcement agencies and/or malicious agents could use the vulnerabil…
With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT) and the increasing use of application-based processors, security infrastructure needs to be examined on some widely-used IoT hardware architectures. Applications in today's world are moving towards IoT concepts as this makes them fast, efficient, modular and future-proof. However, this leads to a greater security risk as IoT devices thrive in an ecosystem of co-existence and interconnection. As a result of these security risks, it is of utmost importance to test the existing cryptographic ciphers on such devices and determine if they are viable in te…
The Solitaire cipher was designed by Bruce Schneier as a plot point in the novel Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. The cipher is intended to fit the archetype of a modern stream cipher whilst being implementable by hand using a standard deck of cards with two jokers. We find a model for repetitions in the keystream in the stream cipher Solitaire that accounts for the large majority of the repetition bias. Other phenomena merit further investigation. We have proposed modifications to the cipher that would reduce the repetition bias, but at the cost of increasing the complexity of the cipher (pr…
Reversible data hiding in encrypted images (RDH-EI) has attracted increasing attention, since it can protect the privacy of original images while the embedded data can be exactly extracted. Recently, some RDH-EI schemes with multiple data hiders have been proposed using secret sharing technique. However, these schemes protect the contents of the original images with lightweight security level. In this paper, we propose a high-security RDH-EI scheme with multiple data hiders. First, we introduce a cipher-feedback secret sharing (CFSS) technique. It follows the cryptography standards by introduc…
We present a stream cipher based on a chaotic dynamical system. Using a chaotic trajectory sampled under certain rules in order to avoid any attempt to reconstruct the original one, we create a binary pseudo-random keystream that can only be exactly reproduced by someone that has fully knowledge of the communication system parameters formed by a transmitter and a receiver and sharing the same initial conditions. The plaintext is XORed with the keystream creating the ciphertext, the encrypted message. This keystream passes the NISTs randomness test and has been implemented in a videoconference …
In today's world the use of computer and telecommunications networking is essential for human life. Among these, mobile tools and devices due to availability, have found a special impact on everyone life. This feature addition to providing sample facilities such as financial transactions at any place and time has raised the Sensitivities about security of these devices. In order to provide security, numerous techniques have been proposed which due to the limitations of mobile devices; an algorithm should be taken that have the ability to function for light weight ubiquitous computing. In this …
We propose two parity-based concurrent error detection schemes for the Quarterround of the ChaCha stream cipher to protect from transient and permanent faults. They offer a trade-off between implementation overhead and error coverage. The second approach can detect any odd-weight error on the in-/output and intermediate signals of a Quarterround, while the first one requires less logic.
