We study a continuous quantum phase transition that breaks a $Z_2$ symmetry. We show that the transition is described by a new critical point which does not belong to the Ising universality class, despite the presence of well defined symmetry breaking order parameter. The new critical point arises since the transition not only break the $Z_2$ symmetry, it also changes the topological/quantum order in the two phases across the transition. We show that the new critical point can be identified in experiments by measuring critical exponents. So measuring critical exponents and identifying new critical points is a way to detect new topological phases and a way to measure topological/quantum orders in those phases.
A large class of topological orders can be understood and classified using the string-net condensation picture. These topological orders can be characterized by a set of data (N, d_i, F^{ijk}_{lmn}, δ_{ijk}). We describe a way to detect this kind of topological order using only the ground state wave function. The method involves computing a quantity called the ``topological entropy'' which directly measures the quantum dimension D = \sum_i d^2_i.
Symmetry protected topological states cannot be deformed to a trivial state so long as the symmetry is preserved, yet there is no local order parameter that can distinguish them from a trivial state. We demonstrate how to detect whether a two dimensional ground state has symmetry protected topological order; the measurements play a similar role as the topological entanglement entropy does for detecting anyons. For any finite abelian onsite symmetry, the measurement completely determines the 3rd cohomology class that characterizes the order. The proposed measurement is validated numerically usi…
The existence of degenerate or gapless edge states is a characteristic feature of topological insulators, but is difficult to detect in the presence of interactons. We propose a new method to obtain the degeneracy of the edge states from the perspective of entanglement entropy, which is very useful to identify interacting topological states. Employing the determinant quantum Monte Carlo technique, we investigate the interaction effect on two representative models of fermionic topological insulators in one and two dimensions, respectively. In the two topologically nontrivial phases, the edge de…
The ground states encode the information of the topological phases of a 2-dimensional system, which makes them crucial in determining the associated topological quantum field theory (TQFT). Most numerical methods for detecting the TQFT relied on the use of minimum entanglement states (MESs), extracting the anyon mutual statistics and self statistics via overlaps and/or the entanglement spectra. The MESs are the eigenstates of the Wilson loop operators, and are labeled by the anyons corresponding to their eigenvalues. Here we revisit the definition of the Wilson loop operators and MESs. We deri…
We propose a unified scheme to identify phase transitions out of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Abelian topological order, including the transition to a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. Using loop gas and and string gas states [H.-Y. Lee, R. Kaneko, T. Okubo, N. Kawashima, Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 087203 (2019)] on the star lattice Kitaev model as an example, we compute the overlap of minimally entangled states through transfer matrices. We demonstrate that, similar to the anyon condensation, continuous deformation of a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-injective projected entangled-pair state (PEPS) also allows us to study the…
Topological phases which host Majorana fermions can not be identified via local order parameters. We give simple nonlocal order parameters to distinguish quasi-one-dimensional (1D) topological superconductors of spinless fermions, for any interacting model in the absence of time reversal symmetry. These string or "brane" order parameters are natural for measurements in cold atom systems using quantum gas microscopy. We propose them as a way to identify symmetry-protected topological phases of Majorana fermions in cold atom experiments via bulk rather than edge degrees of freedom. Subsequently,…
A spin-orbit coupled quantum wire, with one end proximate to an s-wave superconductor, can become a topological superconductor, with a Majorana mode localized at each end of the superconducting region. It was recently shown that coupling one end of such a topological superconductor to $two$ normal channels of interacting electrons leads to a novel type of frustration and a quantum critical point when both channels couple with equal strength. We propose an experimental method to access this critical point in a $single$ quantum wire and show its resilience to disorder.
We introduce a numerical method for identifying topological order in two-dimensional models based on one-dimensional bulk operators. The idea is to identify approximate symmetries supported on thin strips through the bulk that behave as string operators associated to an anyon model. We can express these ribbon operators in matrix product form and define a cost function that allows us to efficiently optimize over this ansatz class. We test this method on spin models with abelian topological order by finding ribbon operators for $\mathbb{Z}_d$ quantum double models with local fields and Ising-li…
Symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases exhibit nontrivial order if symmetry is respected but are adiabatically connected to the trivial product phase if symmetry is not respected. However, unlike the symmetry-breaking phase, there is no local order parameter for SPT phases. Here we employ a tensor-network method to compute the topological invariants characterized by the simulated modular $S$ and $T$ matrices to study transitions in a few families of two-dimensional (2D) wavefunctions which are $\mathbb{Z}_N$ ($N=2\, \&3$) symmetric. We find that in addition to the topologically ordered ph…

We theoretically study the equilibrium spin current fluctuations and the corresponding charge noise generated by inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in a metal with strong spin-orbit coupling deposited on top of a quantum paramagnet. It is shown that the charge noise power spectra measured along different spatial axes can directly probe the different spin components of the boundary dynamic spin correlations of the quantum paramagnet. We report the utility of this ISHE-facilitated spin noise probe as a tool to unambiguously detect topological phase transitions in an S=1/2 quantum spin ladder that h…
We propose a diagnostic for finite temperature topological order using `topological entanglement negativity', the long-range component of a mixed-state entanglement measure. As a demonstration, we study the toric code model in $d$ spatial dimension for $d$=2,3,4, and find that when topological order survives thermal fluctuations, it possesses a non-zero topological entanglement negativity, whose value is equal to the topological entanglement entropy at zero temperature. Furthermore, we show that the Gibbs state of 2D and 3D toric code at any non-zero temperature, and that of 4D toric code abov…
We present an approach to identify topological order based on unbiased infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) simulations, i.e. where we do not impose a virtual symmetry on the tensors during the optimization of the tensor network ansatz. As an example we consider the ground state of the toric code model in a magnetic field exhibiting $Z_2$ topological order. The optimization is done by an efficient energy minimization approach based on a summation of tensor environments to compute the gradient. We show that the optimized tensors, when brought into the right gauge, are approximately …
The interplay between topological phases of matter and dissipative baths constitutes an emergent research topic with links to condensed matter, photonic crystals, cold atomic gases and quantum information. While recent studies suggest that dissipative baths can induce topological phases in intrinsically trivial quantum materials, the backaction of topological invariants on dissipative baths is overlooked. By exploring this backaction for a centrosymmetric Dirac insulator coupled to phonons, we show that the linewidths of bulk optical phonons can contain generic features that reveal the topolog…
We propose the c-function as a new and accurate probe to detect the location of topological quantum critical points. As a direct application, we consider a holographic model which exhibits a topological quantum phase transition between a topologically trivial insulating phase and a gapless Weyl semimetal. The quantum critical point displays a strong Lifshitz-like anisotropy in the spatial directions and the quantum phase transition does not follow the standard Landau paradigm. The c-function robustly shows a global feature at the quantum criticality and distinguishes with great accuracy the tw…

We employ strange correlators to detect 2D subsystem symmetry-protected topological (SSPT) phases which are nontrivial topological phases protected by subsystem symmetries. Specifically, we analytically construct efficient strange correlators in the 2D cluster model in the presence of a uniform magnetic field and then perform the projector Quantum Monte Carlo simulation within the quantum annealing scheme. We find that strange correlators show the long-range correlation in the SSPT phase, from which we define strange order parameters to characterize the topological phase transition between the…
We describe a protocol to read out the topological invariant of interacting 1D chiral models, based on measuring the mean chiral displacement of time-evolving bulk excitations. We present analytical calculations and numerical Matrix Product State simulations of interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains, demonstrating how the mean chiral displacement allows to distinguish between topological insulator, trivial insulator and symmetry-broken phases. Finally, we provide an experimental blueprint for realizing a model displaying these three phases and describe how to detect those.
Subsystem symmetry protected topological (SSPT) order is a type of quantum order that is protected by symmetries acting on lower-dimensional subsystems of the entire system. In this paper, we show how SSPT order can be characterized and detected by a constant correction to the entanglement area law, similar to the topological entanglement entropy. Focusing on the paradigmatic two-dimensional cluster phase as an example, we use tensor network methods to give an analytic argument that almost all states in the phase exhibit the same correction to the area law, such that this correction may be use…
The realization of interacting topological states of matter such as fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) in cold atom systems has recently come within experimental reach due to the engineering of optical lattices with synthetic gauge fields providing the required topological band structures. However, detecting their occurrence might prove difficult since transport measurements akin to those in solid state systems are challenging to perform in cold atom setups and alternatives have to be found. We show that for a $ν= 1/2$ FCI state realized in the lowest band of a Harper-Hofstadter model of inter…
