We investigate by electrical transport the field-induced superconducting state (FISC) in the organic conductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$. Below 4 K, antiferromagnetic-insulator, metallic, and eventually superconducting (FISC) ground states are observed with increasing in-plane magnetic field. The FISC state survives between 18 and 41 T, and can be interpreted in terms of the Jaccarino-Peter effect, where the external magnetic field {\em compensates} the exchange field of aligned Fe$^{3+}$ ions. We further argue that the Fe$^{3+}$ moments are essential to stabilize the resulting singlet, two-dimensional superconducting state
We review the current understanding of superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors of the Bechgaard and Fabre salt families. We discuss the interplay between superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and charge-density-wave fluctuations. The connection to recent experimental observations supporting unconventional pairing and the possibility of a triplet-spin order parameter for the superconducting phase is also presented.
We show that superconductivity is absent within the 1/2-filled band triangular lattice repulsive Hubbard model that has been proposed for organic charge-transfer solids. We posit that organic superconductivity is rather reached from a Bond-Charge Density Wave that either constitutes the insulating state proximate to superconductivity, or is extremely close in energy to the antiferromagnetic state, and replaces the latter under pressure. The Bond-Charge Density Wave can be described within an effective attractive $U$ extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with repulsive nearest neighbor interaction $V$. …
We suggest that superconductivity (SC) in the organic charge transfer solids (CTS) is reached from a Bond-Charge Density Wave (BCDW). We discuss an effective model for the BCDW to SC transition, an attractive U extended Hubbard Hamiltonian with repulsive nearest neighbor interaction V. We discuss experimental consequences of the theory for different classes of CTS superconductors as well as related inorganic materials.
We study theoretically competition between the charge ordering and the superconductivity in two-dimensional organic conductor beta-(meso-DMBEDT-TTF)_2PF_6. We analyze the extended Hubbard model on a weakly-dimerized lattice based on the random phase approximation and Eliashberg equations. We found reentrant behavior of the checkerbord-type charge-ordered phase in the phase diagram, and the triplet superconductivity due to the charge fluctuation in the neighboring region. In the low temperature and high pressure region, the singlet superconductivity also appears due to the enhancement of the sp…
Superconductivity in the Bechgaard salts series of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors occurs on the verge of spin-density-wave ordering when hydrostatic pressure is applied. The sequence of instabilities is intimately connected to normal state anomalies in various quantities like the temperature dependence of electrical transport and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We discuss how such a connection takes its origin in the interference between the different pairing mechanisms responsible for antiferromagnetism and superconductivity, a duo that can be comprehended in terms of a weak c…
We study electron correlation driven superconductivity on a decorated honeycomb lattice (DHL), which has a low-energy flat band. On doping, we find singlet superconductivity with extended-s, extended-d and f-wave symmetry mediated by magnetic exchange. f-wave singlet pairing is enabled by the lattice decoration. The critical temperature is predicted to be significantly higher than on similar lattices lacking flat bands. We discuss how high-temperature superconductivity could be realized in the DHL materials such as Rb3TT. 2 H2O and Mo3S7(dmit)3.
The interdependence of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the Bechgaard salts series of organic conductors is examined in the light of the anomalous temperature dependence of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We apply the renormalization group approach to the electron gas model to show that the crossover from antiferromagnetism to superconductivity along with the anomalous nuclear relaxation rate of the Bechgaard salts can be well described within a unified microscopic framework. For sizable nesting deviations of the Fermi surface, scaling theory reveals how pairing correlatio…
We observe charge-order fluctuations in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)2 SF5 CH2 CF2 SO3 both by means of vibrational spectroscopy, locally probing the fluctuating charge order, and investigating the in-plane dynamical response by infrared reflectance spectroscopy. The decrease of effective electronic interaction in an isostructural metal suppresses both charge-order fluctuations and superconductivity, pointing on their interplay. We compare the results of our experiments with calculations on the extended Hubbard model.
Current experimental results suggest that some organic quasi-one-dimensional superconductors exhibit triplet pairing symmetry. Thus, we discuss several potential triplet order parameters for the superconducting state of these systems within the functional integral formulation. We compare weak spin-orbit coupling $f_{xyz}$, $p_x$, $p_y$ and $p_z$ symmetries via several thermodynamic quantities. For each symmetry, we analyse the temperature dependences of the order parameter, condensation energy, specific heat, and superfluid density tensor.
I apply a two-step renormalization group method to the study of the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity in an anisotropic 2D Hubbard model. I show that this simple model captures the essentials of the ground-state phases of the quasi 1D organic conductors. As found experimentally, the ground-state phase diagram is mostly AFM. The AFM is localized in the strong-coupling limit where the electrons are confined in the chains. It is an SDW in the weak-coupling limit where interchain hopping is present. There is a tiny region in the weak-coupling regime where transvers…
We present direct evidence of a superconducting state existing in the title compound below 300 mK under quasi-hydrostatic pressure. The superconducing transition is observed in the whole pressure range studied, 0 < P < 4 kbar. However, the character of the transition drastically changes with suppressing the charge-density wave state.
We introduce and analyze a variational wave function for quasi two-dimensional kappa-ET organic salts containing strong local and nonlocal correlation effects. We find an unconventional superconducting ground state for intermediate charge carrier interaction, sandwiched between a conventional metal at weak coupling and a spin liquid at larger coupling. Most remarkably, the excitation spectrum is dramatically renormalized and is found to be the driving force for the formation of the unusual superconducting state.
Magnetic-field-angle-resolved heat capacity of dimer-Mott organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$$X$ is reported. Temperature and field dependence of heat capacity indicates that the superconductivity has line nodes on the Fermi surface, which is a typical feature of $d$-wave superconductivity. In-plane field-angle dependence exhibits fourfold oscillations as well as twofold oscillations due to anisotropy of superconducting gap functions. From analyses of the fourfold term, the gap symmetry is determined as $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$+$s_{\pm}$ for $X$=Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br and $d_{xy}$ for $X$=Ag(CN)$_2$H…
The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity an…
We investigated the infrared optical spectra of an organic dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, which was irradiated with X-rays. We observed that the irradiation caused a large spectral weight transfer from the mid-infrared region, where interband transitions in the dimer and Mott-Hubbard bands take place, to a Drude part in a low-energy region; this caused the Mott gap to collapse. The increase of the Drude part indicates a carrier doping into the Mott insulator due to irradiation defects. The strong redistribution of the spectral weight demonstrates that the organic M…
We present a review of quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors. These systems exhibit many interesting phenomena, including reduced dimensionality, strong electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions and the proximity of antiferromagnetism, insulator states and superconductivity. Moreover, it has been possible to measure the electronic bands of many of the organics in great detail, in contrast to the situation in other well-known systems in which similar phenomena occur. We describe the crystal structure and normal-state properties of the organics, before presenting the experimenta…
The magnetic susceptibility of the organic superconductors $κ$-(h8 or d8-ET)$_{2}$$X$, $X =$ Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ and Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br has been studied. A metallic phase below $T^{*} =$ 37 $\sim$ 38 K for $X =$ Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br and 46 $\sim$ 50 K for $X =$ Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ has an anisotropic temperature dependence of the susceptibility and the charge transport. Partial charge-density-wave or charge fluctuation is expected to coexist with the metallic phase instead of the large antiferromagnetic fluctuation above $T^{*}$. The phase diagram and the superconductivity of $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$$X$ are discussed in…
We investigate low-temperature electronic properties of the nondimeric organic superconductor $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]PhNO$_2$. By examining ultrasonic properties, charge disproportionation (CD) without magnetic field dependence is detected below $T_{\rm CD}$$\sim$8~K just above the superconducting critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$$\sim$6~K. From quantum oscillations in high fields, we find variation in the Fermi surface and mass enhancement induced by the CD. Heat capacity studies elucidate that the superconducting gap function is fully gapped in the Fermi …
We report X-ray irradiation-induced carrier doping effects on the electrical conductivity in the organic dimer-Mott insulators $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$$X$ with $X =$ Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl and Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. For $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl, we have observed a large decrease of the resistivity by 40 % with the irradiation at 300 K and the metal-like temperature dependence down to about 50 K. The irradiation-induced defects expected at the donor molecule sites might cause a local imbalance of the charge transfer in the crystal. Such molecular defects result in the effective doping of carriers into the…
We propose a mew picture for superconductivity in $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ salts arguing that small-{\bf q} electron-phonon scattering dominates the pairing. We reproduce the distinct X-shaped d-wave gap reported recently by magnetooptic measurements and we argue that the softness of the momentum structure of the gap and the near degeneracy of s- and d-wave gap states may be at the origin of the experimental controversy about the gap symmetry. We show that a magnetic field applied parallel to the planes may induce extended gapless-regions on the FS accounting for the experimental signatures of a Fuld…
The magnetic field effect on the phase diagram of the organic Mott system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br in which the bandwidth was tuned by the substitution of deuterated molecules was studied by means of the resistivity measurements performed in magnetic fields. The lower critical point of the first-order Mott transition, which ended on the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$-temperature plane of the superconductivity, was determined experimentally in addition to the previously observed upper critical end point. The lower critical end point moved to a lower temperature with the suppress…
While the optical properties of the superconducting salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$NH$_4$Hg(SCN)$_4$ remain metallic down to 2 K, in the non-superconducting K-analog a pseudogap develops at frequencies of about 200 cm$^{-1}$ for temperatures T < 200 K. Based on exact diagonalisation calculations on an extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling we argue that fluctuations associated with short range charge ordering are responsible for the observed low-frequency feature. The different ground states, including superconductivity, are a consequence of the proximity of these compounds to a quantum phase charg…
The conducting properties of the pressure-induced, layered organic superconductor (BEDT-TTF)_3Cl_2.2H_20 have been studied at 13.5 and 14.0 kbar using low temperatures, high magnetic fields and two-axis rotation. An upper critical field that is significantly larger than that expected from the Pauli paramagnetic limit is observed when the field is applied parallel to the conducting layers. The angle dependent magnetoresistance suggests incoherent transport between the conducting layers at both pressures and the observed negative magnetoresistance at 13.5 kbar can be explained by considering And…
The superconducting transition in the layered organic compound α-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4 has been studied in the two hydrostatic pressure regimes where a charge-density wave is either present or completely suppressed. Within the charge-density-wave state the experimental results reveal a network of weakly coupled superconducting regions. This is especially seen in a strong enhancement of the measured critical field and the corresponding positive curvature of its temperature dependence. Further, it is shown that on lowering the pressure into the density-wave state traces of a superconducting pha…
$^{1}$H NMR and static susceptibility measurements have been performed in an organic Mott insulator with nearly isotropic triangular lattice, $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$, which is a model system of frustrated quantum spins. The static susceptibility is described by the spin $S$ = 1/2 antiferromagnetic triangular-lattice Heisenberg model with the exchange constant $J$ $\sim$ 250 K. Regardless of the large magnetic interactions, the $^{1}$H NMR spectra show no indication of long-range magnetic ordering down to 32 mK, which is four-orders of magnitude smaller than $J$. These results su…
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are self-assemblies of metal ions and organic ligands, provide a tunable platform to search a new state of matter. A two-dimensional (2D) perfect kagome lattice, whose geometrical frustration is a key to realizing quantum spin liquids, has been formed in the $π$-${d}$ conjugated 2D MOF [Cu$_{3}$(C$_{6}$S$_{6}$)]$_{n}$ (Cu-BHT). The recent discovery of its superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 0.25\,kelvin raises fundamental questions about the nature of electron pairing. Here, we show that Cu-BHT is a strongly correlated unconventio…
The $κ$-(ET)$_2$X layered conductors (where ET stands for BEDT-TTF) are studied within the dimer model as a function of the diagonal hopping $t^\prime$ and Hubbard repulsion $U$. Antiferromagnetism and d-wave superconductivity are investigated at zero temperature using variational cluster perturbation theory (V-CPT). For large $U$, Néel antiferromagnetism exists for $t' < t'_{c2}$, with $t'_{c2}\sim 0.9$. For fixed $t'$, as $U$ is decreased (or pressure increased), a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase appears. When $U$ is decreased further, the a $d_{xy}$ order takes over. There is a critical…
The phase diagram of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl has been accurately measured from a combination of $^{1}$H NMR and AC susceptibility techniques under helium gas pressure. The domains of stability of antiferromagnetic and superconducting long-range orders in the pressure {\it vs} temperature plane have been determined. Both phases overlap through a first-order boundary that separates two regions of inhomogeneous phase coexistence. The boundary curve is found to merge with another first order line related to the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnet…
We present ultra-high-resolution dilatometric studies in magnetic fields on a quasi-two-dimensional organic conductor $κ$-(D8-BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br, which is located close to the Mott metal-insulator (MI) transition. The obtained thermal expansion coefficient, $α(T)$, reveals two remarkable features: (i) the Mott MI transition temperature $T_{MI}$ = (13.6 $\pm$ 0.6)\,K is insensitive to fields up to 10\,T, the highest applied field; (ii) for fields along the interlayer \emph{b}-axis, a magnetic-field-induced (FI) phase transition at $T_{FI}$ = (9.5 $\pm$ 0.5)\,K is observed above a …
We investigate low-temperature electronic states of the series of organic conductors $β^{\prime\prime}$-(BEDT-TTF)$_4$[(H$_3$O)M(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]G, where BEDT-TTF is bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene, and M and G represent trivalent metal ions and guest organic molecules, respectively. Our structural analyses reveal that the replacement of M and G give rise to systematic change in the cell parameters, especially in the $b$-axis length, which has positive correlation with the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$. Analyses of temperature and magnetic field dependences of the el…
We study spin fluctuation (SF) mediated superconductivity (SC) in a half-filled square lattice Hubbard model with the transfer matrices -t between nearest neighbor sites and -t' between a half of next nearest neighbor sites neighboring along only one of the <1,1> directions, considering application of this model to organic kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2X compounds. Varying the t'/t value from 0 to 1, one can interpolate between a square and an equilateral triangular lattice, the latter giving frustration to antiferromagnetically (AF) coupled spin systems. Within the fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximatio…
Systematic investigation of the electronic phase separation on macroscopic scale is reported in the organic Mott system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br. Real space imaging of the phase separation is obtained by means of scanning micro-region infrared spectroscopy using the synchrotron radiation. The phase separation appears near the Mott boundary and changes its metal-insulator fraction with the substitution ratio $x$ in $κ$-[($h$-BEDT-TTF)$_{1-x}$($d$-BEDT-TTF)$_{x}$]$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br, of which band width is controlled by the substitution ratio $x$ between the hydrogenated BEDT-TT…
The suppression of superconductivity by nonmagnetic disorder is investigated systematically in the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$. We introduce a nonmagnetic disorder arising from molecule substitution in part with deuterated BEDT-TTF or BMDT-TTF for BEDT-TTF molecules and molecular defects introduced by X-ray irradiation. A quantitative evaluation of the scattering time $τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is carried out by de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurement. A large reduction in $T_{\rm c}$ with a linear dependence on $1/τ_{\rm dHvA}$ is found in the small-disorder region below $1/…
The study of the anion ordered (TMTSF)\_2ClO\_4\_(1-x)ReO\_4\_x, solid solution in the limit of a low ReO\_4- substitution level (0<=x<=17%) has revealed a new and interesting phase diagram. Superconductivity is drastically suppressed as the effect of ReO\_4- non magnetic point defects increases following the digamma behaviour for usual superconductors in the presence of paramagnetic impurities. Then, no long range order can be stabilized above 0.1K in a narrow window of substitution. Finally, an insulating SDW ground state in ReO\_4- -rich samples is rapidly stabilized with the decrease of th…
We study the Mott transition, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in layered organic conductors using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory for the frustrated Hubbard model. A d-wave superconducting phase appears between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t=0.3-0.7 $, or between a nonmagnetic Mott insulator (spin liquid) and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t\geq 0.8$, in agreement with experiments on layered organic conductors including $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. These phases are separated by a strong first order transition. The phase diagram gives much insight into …
Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ shows clear discrepancy with the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law giving the behavior of $T_c$ with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, w…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-tempe…
A three-orbital model derived from the two-dimensional projection of the $ab$ $initio$ Hamiltonian for alkaline doped fullerene A$_3$C$_{60}$ with A=Cs,Rb,K is studied by a variational Monte Carlo method. We correctly reproduce the experimental isotropic s-wave superconductivity around the $ab$ $initio$ parameters. With narrowing the bandwidth, the transition to an insulator is also reproduced, where orbital symmetry is found to be spontaneously broken with emergence of an excitonic Mott insulator for two orbitals and an antiferromagnetic insulator nearly degenerate with a spin liquid for the …
Superconductor-insulator transition is a fascinating quantum phenomenon that reveals a competition between phase order and charge localization. Microwave spectroscopy provides a novel promising approach to its controllable investigation in 1D Josephson arrays.
We report the first comprehensive investigation of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2PF6 in the vicinity of the endpoint of the spin density wave - metal phase transition where phase coexistence occurs. At low temperature, the transition of metallic domains towards superconductivity is used to reveal the various textures. In particular, we demonstrate experimentally the existence of 1D and 2D metallic domains with a cross-over from a filamentary superconductivity mostly along the c?-axis to a 2D superconductivity in the b?c-plane perpendicular to the most conducting direction. The formation o…
The magnetic field-induced superconductor-insulator-metal transition (SIMT) in partially deuterated $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br, which is just on the Mott boundary, has been observed using the infrared magneto-optical imaging spectroscopy. The infrared reflectivity image on the sample surface revealed that the metallic (or superconducting) and insulating phases coexist and they have different magnetic field dependences. One of the magnetic field dependence is SIMT that appeared on part of the sample surface. The SIMT was concluded to originate from the balance of the inhomogenity in the …
The phase diagram of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6 has been revisited using transport measurements with an improved control of the applied pressure. We have found a 0.8 kbar wide pressure domain below the critical point (9.43 kbar, 1.2 K) for the stabilisation of the superconducting ground state featuring a coexistence regime between spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC). The inhomogeneous character of the said pressure domain is supported by the analysis of the resistivity between T_SDW and T_SC and the superconducting critical current. The onset temperature T_SC is pr…
We study theoretically the shift of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) under uniaxial compression in beta-type organic superconductors, beta-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 and beta-(BDA-TTP)2X[X=SbF6,AsF6], in order to clarify the electron correlation, the spin frustration and the effect of dimerization. The transfer integrals are calculated by the extended Huckel method assuming the uniaxial strain and the superconducting state mediated by the spin fluctuation is solved using Eliashberg's equation with the fluctuation-exchange approximation. The calculation is carried out on both the dimerized (o…
Motivated by superconductivity (SC) in layered nitrides, we study an ionic-Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice, which consists of two sublattices with an energy-level offset, by using an optimization variational Monte Carlo method. Parameter values for the Coulomb interaction and the energy-level offset, to realize a band insulator in non-doped state, are evaluated, and the SC state is investigated in a carrier-doped band insulator. It is found that, in a weakly doped band insulator, spin fluctuation remains and the spin-singlet d-wave SC state is realized. Present results support an unconven…
Starting from the d-wave RVB mean-field theory of Kotliar and Liu, we present a new, long-wavelength/low-energy exact, treatment of gauge fluctuations. The result is a theory of gapless fermion quasiparticles coupled to superconducting phase fluctuations. We will discuss the physical implications, and the similarity/differences with a theory of BCS pairing with phase fluctuations.
Recent experiments on twisted bilayer graphene have shown a high-temperature parent state with massless Dirac fermions and broken electronic flavor symmetry; superconductivity and correlated insulators emerge from this parent state at lower temperatures. We propose that the superconducting and correlated insulating orders are connected by Wess-Zumino-Witten terms, so that defects of one order contain quanta of another order and skyrmion fluctuations of the correlated insulator are a "mechanism" for superconductivity. We present a comprehensive listing of plausible low-temperature orders, and t…
We report the temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field in the quasi-onedimensional molecular organic superconductor (DMET)2I3, for magnetic field applied along the intrachain, interchain, and interplane directions. The upper critical field tends to saturation at low temperature for field in all directions and does not exceed the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Superconductivity in (DMET)2I3 thus appears to be conventional spin singlet, in contrast to the status of the isostructural Bechgaard salts. We also discuss a magnetic field-induced dimensional crossover effect in the normal…
Quasi one-dimensional organic conductors: from Fröhlich conductivity and Peierls insulating state to magnetically-mediated superconductivity, a retrospective
When a Mott metal-insulator transition is inhibited by a small amount of disorder in the layered dichalcogenide 1T-TaS$_2$, an inhomogeneous superconducting state arises below T=2.1 K, and coexists with a nearly-commensurate charge-density-wave. By angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) we show that it emerges from a bad metal state with strongly damped quasiparticles. Superconductivity is almost entirely suppressed by an external magnetic field of 0.1 T.
We present a novel route for attaining unconventional superconductivity (SC) in a strongly correlated system without doping. In a simple model of a correlated band insulator (BI) at half-filling we demonstrate, based on a generalization of the projected wavefunctions method, that SC emerges when e-e interactions and the bare band-gap are both much larger than the kinetic energy, provided the system has sufficient frustration against the magnetic order. As the interactions are tuned, SC appears sandwiched between the correlated BI followed by a paramagnetic metal on one side, and a ferrimagneti…
Metal-insulator transitions (MIT) belong to a class of fascinating physical phenomena, which includes superconductivity, and colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), that are associated with drastic modifications of electrical resistance. In transition metal compounds, MIT are often related to the presence of strong electronic correlations that drive the system into a Mott insulator state. In these systems the MIT is usually tuned by electron doping or by applying an external pressure. However, it was noted recently that a Mott insulator should also be sensitive to other external perturbations such a…
Paired valence electrons forming covalent bonds in molecues are confined cooper pair correlations. High pressure dissociates molecules in solid H2S, SiH4, H2 etc. and form extended structures. However, valence electrons are resilient and continue to bond and sometimes resonate. It is suggested that some structures contain emergent Mott insulators (EMI) and support superconductivity and other phases, under special conditions. In pressurized solid H2S, we propose presence of a sublattice of relatively narrow, nearly half filled band of H atoms, trapped in ordered interstitials of colvalently bon…
The experimentally observed, ambipolar field-effect characteristics of Mott insulators are reproduced in the one-dimensional Hubbard model attached to a tight-binding model for source and drain electrodes. The formation of Schottky barriers, originating from the work-function difference, is taken into account by a potential satisfying the Poisson equation with an appropriate boundary condition. Then, these field-effect characteristics are shown to be related by unique current-voltage characteristics of metal-Mott-insulator interfaces.
We study the insulating phase of disordered indium oxide films that undergo a field-tuned superconductor-insulator transition. The transport measurements in a perpendicular magnetic field show distinct regimes of strongly fluctuating order-parameter amplitude and phase, and reveal a wide range of insulator strength in samples with differing disorder, despite the similarity in behavior near the SIT. We characterize the strength of the insulating phase and compare it to the superconducting strength. We find that the films do not return to the expected normal state even at high perpendicular magn…
This article reviews recent results of magnetotransport and magnetization measurements performed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite (HOPG) and single crystalline Kish graphite samples. Both metal-insulator and insulator-metal transitions driven by magnetic field applied perpendicular to the basal planes of graphite were found and discussed in the light of relevant theories. The results provide evidence for the existence of localized superconducting domains in HOPG even at room temperature, as well as an interplay between superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations. We also present experi…
The quantum oscillatory effect and superconductivity in a non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene (TCF) structure based organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 are studied. Here the Shubnikov-de Haas effect (SdH) and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) are observed. The oscillation frequency associated with a cylindrical Fermi surface is found to be about 4050 tesla, which is also verified by the tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurement. The upper critical field Hc2 measurement in a tilted magnetic field and the TDO measurement in the mixed state reveal a highly anisotropic supe…
