Measurements of the $10GHz$ microwave surface resistance of dense $MgB_{2}$ wire and pellet are reported. Significant improvements are observed in the wire with reduction of porosity. The data lie substantially above the theoretical estimates for a pure BCS s-wave superconductor . However the $R_{s}(20K)$ of the wire is an order of magnitude lower than that of polycrystal $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}$ and matches with single crystal $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}.$The results show promise for the use of $MgB_{2}$ in microwave applications.
Hydrogenation of MgB_2 powder has lead to an increase in the superconducting temperature, as determined by ac susceptibility. Applied dc fields reduce the transition temperature in the same ratio as for the pure powder.
This review article describes the developments over the last 30 months in the thin film growth and junction fabrication of superconducting MgB2, including a brief summary the chemistry and physics of MgB2.
The microwave surface resistance Rs of MgB2 films with the zero-resistance temperature of - 39 K was measured at 8.0 - 8.5 GHz. The MgB2 films were prepared by deposition of boron films on c-cut sapphire, followed by annealing in a vaporized magnesium environment. The Rs appeared significantly reduced by ion milling of the as-grown MgB2 film surface, with the observed Rs of ~ 0.8 mohm at 24 K for an ion-milled MgB2 film as small as 1/15 of the value for the corresponding as-grown MgB2 film. The reduced Rs of the ion-milled MgB2 films is attributed to the effects of the Mg-rich metallic layer e…
We discuss the temperature, frequency, and power-dependent surface resistance of the boride superconductor MgB2 in relation to possible applications for passive microwave devices. The data available in the literature are compared with results for polycrystalline Nb3Sn and epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7-x, which are representative of the classical and cuprate superconductors. MgB2 displays all specific features that make superconductors attractive for high-performance devices, even though the fabrication technology is not yet mature. We attempt to identify promising areas of applications, as well as mater…
Measurements of the temperature dependence of the surface resistance at 3 GHz of 100 micron size grains of MgB_2 separated powder are presented and discussed. The microwave surface resistance data is compared to experimental results of Nb, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (BSCCO) and theoretical predictions of s-wave weak coupling electron-phonon theory (BCS).
Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.
Precision measurements of the microwave surface resistance $R_{s}$ of in situ $MgB_{2}$ films directly reveal an exponential behavior of $R_{s}$ at low temperature indicating a fully-gapped order parameter. The entire temperature dependence of $R_{s}$ is well described by a Mattis-Bardeen formalism but with a small gap ratio of $Δ(0)/kT_{c}=0.72$, corresponding to $Δ(0)=1.9meV$.
We report the successful manufacture and characterization of a microwave resonant cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor (Tc = 38.5 K), which has been produced by the Reactive Liquid Mg Infiltration technique. The quality factor of the cavity for the TE011 mode, resonating at 9.79 GHz, has been measured as a function of the temperature. At T = 4.2 K, the unloaded quality factor is 2.2x10^5; it remains of the order of 10^5 up to T ~ 30 K. We discuss the potential performance improvements of microwave cavities built from bulk MgB2 materials produced by reactive liquid Mg infiltratio…
Field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance, Rs(H), have been investigated in high-density ceramic MgB2. At low temperatures, several peculiarities of the Rs(H) curves cannot be justified in the framework of models reported in the literature. We suggest that they are ascribable to the unconventional vortex structure in MgB2, related to the presence of two gaps. On the contrary, the results near Tc can be accounted for by the Coffey and Clem model, with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account.
We report results of dc magnetic and ac linear low-frequency study of a polycrystalline MgB$_2$ sample. AC susceptibility measurements at low frequencies, performed under dc fields parallel to the sample surface, provide a clear evidence for surface superconducting states in MgB$_2$.
We have performed microwave measurements on superconducting hot-isostatically- pressed (HIPed) bulk MgB2 using a parallel-plate resonator technique. The high density and strength of the HIPed material allowed preparation of samples with mirror-like surfaces for microwave measurements. The microwave surface resistance decreased by about 40% at 20 K when the root-mean-square surface roughness was reduced from 220 nm to 110 nm through surface-polishing and ion-milling. The surface resistance was independent of surface microwave magnetic field at least up to 4 Oe and below 30 K. We attribute this …
We report experimental results of the field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance in samples of MgB2, produced by different methods. By sweeping the DC magnetic field at increasing and decreasing values, we have detected a magnetic hysteresis that can be ascribed to the different magnetic induction, due to the critical state of the fluxon lattice. The hysteresis observed in the bulk samples has an unusual shape, which cannot be justified in the framework of the critical-state models.
Two issues related to the microwave surface impedance Z_s of MgB_2 thin film are discussed in this Letter, both being significant for potential microwave applications. At first, a correlation between Zs and Alpha = Xi/l was found, where Xi is the coherence length, and l is the mean free path. The surface resistance Rs decreases with Alpha at moderate and large values of Alpha and saturates when Alpha approaches one. The values of the penetration depth at zero temperature Lamda(0) for different films could be well fitted by Lamda_L (1+Alpha)^(1/2), yielding a London penetration depth Lamda_L of…
It is shown that the transition to the low temperature superconducting state in a 3D metal at high magnetic field is smeared dramatically by thermal fluctuation of the superconducting order parameter. The resulting superconducting-to-normal crossover occurs in a vortex liquid state which is extended well below the mean-field $H_{c2}$. Application to MgB$_{2}$ yields good quantitative agreement with recently reported data of dHvA oscillation in the superconducting state.
The microwave power, dc magnetic field, frequency and temperature dependence of the surface resistance of MgB2 films and powder samples were studied. Sample quality is relatively easy to identify by a number of characteristics, the most clear being the breakdown in the omega squared law for poor quality samples. Analysis of the experimental data suggests the most attractive procedure for high quality film growth for technical applications.
We report on the microwave properties of a resonant cylindrical cavity made of bulk MgB2 superconductor, produced by the reactive liquid Mg infiltration process. The frequency response of the cavity has been measured in the range 5-13GHz. Among the various modes, the TE011, resonating at 9.79GHz, exhibits the highest quality factor. For this mode, we have determined the temperature dependence of the quality factor, obtaining values of the order of 10^5 in the temperature range 4.2-30K. The values of the surface resistance deduced from the measurements of the quality factor agree quite well wit…
Measurements of the superconducting transition temperature Tc have been performed by the inductive method on MgB2 at pressures up to 28 GPa. Tc decreases with applied pressure, exhibiting a cusp at about 9 GPa. We interpret the appearance of this anomaly in the Tc(P) dependence as a result of the pressure-induced electronic transition. Recent band-structure calculations for MgB2 give some support for such an explanation.
The band structure and the Fermi surface of hexagonal diborides ZrB2, VB2, NbB2, TaB2 have been studied by the self-consistent full-potential LMTO method and compared with those for the isostructural superconductor MgB2. Factors responsible for the superconducting properties of AlB2-like diborides are analyzed, and the results obtained are compared with previous calculations and available experimental data.
The field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance are investigated in two different samples of powdered MgB2. The experimental results can be justified in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account. Assuming the angular dependence of the upper critical field expected from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we determine the anisotropy factor by fitting the experimental data of the field dependence of the microwave surface resistance. We show that th…
We report on measurements of the magnetic moment in superconducting MgB2 single crystals. We find μ_0H_{c2}^c(0) = 3.2 T, μ_0H_{c2}^{ab}(0) = 14.5 T, γ= 4.6, μ_0H_c(0) = 0.28 T, and κ(T_c) = 4.7. The standard Ginzburg-Landau and London model relations lead to a consistent data set and indicate that MgB2 is a clean limit superconductor of intermediate coupling strength with very pronounced anisotropy effects.
We have successfully prepared the MgB2 superconducting bulk and powdered materials by the method of combustion synthesis. The starting materials used in this study were powders of Mg and B. X-ray powder diffraction pattern was well assigned to the P6/mmm MgB2 phase. The temperature dependence of magnetization shows sharp superconducting transition around 38K. The critical current density can be estimated from the hysteresis of the magnetization curvature using the Bean's model. The powdered sample shows a high critical current density of 2x10^6 A/cm2 at 5K under the magnetic field of 1T.
Far-infrared reflectivity studies on the polycrystalline intermetallic compound MgB_2 with a superconducting transition temperature T_c=39 K were performed at temperatures 20 K to 300 K. We observe a significant raise of the superconducting-to-normal state reflectivity ratio below 70 cm^{-1}, with a maximum at about 25-30 cm^{-1}, which gives a lower estimate of the superconducting gap of 2Δ(0)\approx3-4 meV.
Measurements of the superconducting transition temperatures for Al-doped, C-doped and neutron-damaged-annealed MgB2 samples under pressure up to ~8 kbar are presented. The dT_c/dP values change systematically with the decrease of the ambient pressure T_c in a regular fashion. The evolution of the pressure derivatives can be understood assuming that the change in phonon spectrum is a dominant contribution to dT_c/dP.
We reported far-infrared transmission measurements on a c-axis oriented superconducting MgB$_{2}$ thin film in the frequency range of 30 $\sim$ 250 cm$^{-1}$. We found that these measurements were sensitive to values of scattering rate $1/τ$ and superconducting gap $2Δ$. By fitting the experimental transmission spectra at 40 K and below, we obtained $1/τ=$ (700 $\sim$ 1000) cm$^{-1}$ and $2Δ(0)\cong$ 42 cm$^{-1}$. These two quantities suggested that MgB$_{2}$ belong to the dirty limit.
Solid MgB$_2$ has rather interesting and technologically important properties, such as a very high superconducting transition temperature. Focusing on this compound, we report the first non-trivial application of a novel density-functional-type theory for superconductors, recently proposed by the authors. Without invoking any adjustable parameters, we obtain the transition temperature, the gaps, and the specific heat of MgB$_2$ in very good agreement with experiment. Moreover, our calculations show how the Coulomb interaction acts differently on s and p states, thereby stabilizing the observed…
The discovery of superconductor in magnesium diboride MgB2 with high Tc (39 K) has raised some challenging issues; whether this new superconductor resembles a high temperature cuprate superconductor(HTS) or a low temperature metallic superconductor; which superconducting mechanism, a phonon- mediated BCS or a hole superconducting mechanism or other new exotic mechanism may account for this superconductivity; and how about its future for applications. In order to clarify the above questions, experiments using the single crystal sample are urgently required. Here we have first succeeded in obtai…
It is shown that coherent behavior of Cooper's pairs and electrons in the two-band superconductors $MgB_2$ is possible as a result of a strong two-phonon-electron coupling. The spin-$\frac 12$ triples with zero angular momentum are made up of three spin-$\frac 12$ fermions with charge $\emph{e}$. They are gapped Fermi excitations with gap induced by the gaps of the single fermions. Their contribution to the thermodynamics of the $MgB_2$ superconductors is considered.
We investigate the physics of the microwave response in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$, SmBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ and MgB$_{2}$ in the vortex state. We first recall the theoretical basics of vortex-state microwave response in the London limit. We then present a wide set of measurements of the field, temperature, and frequency dependences of the vortex state microwave complex resistivity in superconducting thin films, measured by a resonant cavity and by swept-frequency Corbino disk. The combination of these techniques allows for a comprehensive description of the microwave response in the vortex…
We report the preparation of Mg$_{1-x}$B$_{2}$ (0$\le$x$\le$0.5) compounds with the nominal compositions. Single phase MgB$_{2}$ was obtained for x=0 sample. For 0$<$x$\le$0.5, MgB$_{4}$ coexists with "MgB$_{2}$" and the amount of MgB$_{4}$ increases with x. With the increase of x, the lattice parameter ${\it c}$ of "MgB$_{2}$" increases and the lattice parameter ${\it a}$ decreases, correspondingly T$_{c}$ of Mg$_{1-x}$B$_{2}$ decreases. The results were discussed in terms of the presence of Mg vacancies or B interstitials in the MgB$_{2}$ structure. This work is helpful to the understanding …
We report the preparation method of, and boron isotope effect for MgB$_2$, a new binary intermetallic superconductor with a remarkably high superconducting transition temperature $T_c$($^{10}$B) = 40.2 K. Measurements of both temperature dependent magnetization and specific heat reveal a 1.0 K shift in $T_c$ between Mg$^{11}$B$_2$ and Mg$^{10}$B$_2$. Whereas such a high transition temperature might imply exotic coupling mechanisms, the boron isotope effect in MgB$_2$ is consistent with the material being a phonon-mediated BCS superconductor.
Data on macroscopic superconducting anisotropy of MgB$_2$ are reviewed. The data are described within a weak coupling two-gaps anisotropic s-wave model of superconductivity. The calculated ratio of the upper critical fields $γ_H=H_{c2,ab}/H_{c2,c}$ increases with decreasing temperature in agreement with available data, whereas the calculated ratio of London penetration depths $γ_λ=λ_c/λ_{ab}$ decreases to reach $\approx 1.1$ at T=0. Possible macroscopic consequences of $γ_λ\neγ_H$ are discussed.
Superconducting MgB(2) films with Tc = 38.6 K were prepared using a precursor-deposition, ex-situ post-processing approach. Precursor films of boron, ~0.5 micrometer thick, were deposited onto Al(2)O(3) (102) substrates by e-beam evaporation; a post-anneal at 890 deg C in the presence of bulk MgB(2) and Mg metal produced highly crystalline MgB(2) films. X-ray diffraction indicated that the films exhibit some degree of c-axis alignment, but are randomly oriented in-plane. Transport current measurements of the superconducting properties show high values of the critical current density and yield …
We report tunneling measurements of the electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction in superconducting MgB$_2$ using the MgB$_2$-I-Nb junctions, where I stands for insulator. The phonon structure in tunneling density of states in MgB$_2$ clearly indicates strong e-ph coupling for the E$_{2g}$ in-plane boron phonons in a narrow range around 60 meV. The Eliashberg spectral function $α^2(ω)F(ω)$ reconstructed from the tunneling data, exhibits significant additional contribution into e-ph interaction from other vibrations such as acoustic ($\sim 38$ meV) and optical ($\sim 90$ meV) bands. Our results are i…
The field dependence of the magnetization above the transition temperature Tc in MgB₂ is shown to evidence a diamagnetic contribution consistent with superconducting fluctuations reflecting both the σ and π bands. In particular, the upturn field Hup in the magnetization curve, related to the incipient effect of the magnetic field in quenching the fluctuating pairs, displays a double structure, in correspondence to two correlation lengths. The experimental findings are satisfactorily described by the extension to the diamagnetism of a recent theory for paraconductivity, in the f…
The powder in tube method has been used to fabricate Ag and Cu clad MgB2 wires using an in-situ reaction method. The effects of short time sintering on the critical current densities of Ag and Cu clad MgB2 wires were studied. All the samples were examined using XRD, SEM, and magnetization measurements. For Ag clad wire Jc is improved by more than two times after the short time sintering process. Jc values of 1.2x10^5 A/cm2 in zero field and above 10^4 A/cm2 in 2T at 20 K have been achieved for Ag clad MgB2 wire which is only sintered for 6 minutes at 800oC. However, a remarkable degree of reac…
In this paper we present the results of measurements of the microwave surface impedance of a powder sample and two films of MgB$_2$. One film has $T_c=30$ K and is not textured, the other is partially c-axis orientated with $T_c=38$ K. These samples show different types of temperature dependence of the field penetration depth: linear for the powder sample, exponential with $Δ/kT_c<1.76$ (film with $T_c=30$ K) and strong coupling behaviour with $Δ/kT_c\sim 2.25$ (film with $T_c=38$ K). The results are well described in terms of an anisotropic gap model or presence of a slightly deficient MgB$_2…
The MgB2 bulks were prepared by high energy milling of Mg and B powder. The correlations among milling times, microstructure and superconducting properties were investigated in MgB2 bulks. Samples were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDX) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the magnetization properties were examined by a Superconducting quantum interfere device (SQUID) magnetometer. It showed that the high energy milling is an effective approach to get fine crystalline (40-100nm) bulk MgB2 with good grain connectivity and high Jc performance. T…
Bulk samples of MgB2 have been formed by hot isostatic pressing (HIPping) of commercial powder at 100MPa and 950=B0C. The resulting material is 100% dense with a sharp superconducting transition at 37.5K. Microstructural studies have indicated the presence of small amounts of second phases within the material, namely MgO and B rich compositions, probably MgB4. Magnetisation measurements performed at 20K have revealed values of Jc=1.3 x 106A/cm2 at zero field, and 9.3 x 105A/cm2 at 1T. Magneto optical (MO) studies have shown direct evidence for the superconducting homogeneity and strong intergr…
In strong-coupling superconductors with a short electron mean free path the self-energy effects in the superconducting order parameter play a major role in the phonon manifestation of the point-contact spectra at the above-gap energies. We derive asymptotic expressions of the phonon structure in MgB$%_{2}$ in the case $eV\ggΔ$ for tunnel, ballistic, and diffusive point-contacts and show that these expressions not only qualitatively, but also semi-quantitatively correspond to the measurements of the phonon structure in the point-contact spectra for the $π$-band of MgB$_{2}$ c-axis oriented thin…
We have measured the Raman spectra of polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ from 25 {\cm} to 1200 {\cm}. When the temperature was decreased below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, we observed a superconductivity-induced redistribution in the electronic Raman continuum. Two pair-breaking peaks appear in the spectra, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps. Furthermore, we have analyzed the measured spectra using a quasi two-dimensional model in which two s-wave superconducting gaps open on two sheets of Fermi surface. For the gap values we have obtained $Δ_1 = 22 cm^{-1}$ (2.7 m…
We present electrical transport, magnetization, and specific heat measurements on bulk MgB2 samples (T_{c} = 38.5 K) synthesized under 200 MPa pressure using a process based on hot isostatic pressing with cooling under pressure. The samples are fully dense and display excellent superconducting properties, including a narrow superconducting transition width (ΔT_{c} = 0.75 K), a high upper critical field H_{c2} (H_{c2}(0) ~ 155 kOe), and a critical current density J_{c} that is the largest yet measured for bulk samples of MgB2 (J_{c}(0) ~ 1.4 MA/cm^{2}). Specific heat measurements yielded a jump…
We performed point-contact spectroscopy on the binary superconductor MgB$_2$. The differential conductance shows gap-related structures which vary in width and position from contact to contact. The distribution of energy gaps shows a distinct accumulation around 1.7 and 7 meV which is associated with the occurrence of a small and a large energy gap in MgB$_2$. While with increasing $T$ the structure in $dI/dV$ associated with the small gap is present up to $T_C$, in magnetic field it is suppressed well below $B_{c2}$.
We have observed the conduction electron spin resonance (CESR) in fine powders of MgB2 both in the superconducting and normal states. The Pauli susceptibility is chi_s=2.0*10^{-5} emu/mole in the temperature range of 450 to 600 K. The spin relaxation rate has an anomalous temperature dependence. The CESR measured below T_c at several frequencies suggests that MgB_2 is a strongly anisotropic superconductor with the upper critical field, H_c2, ranging between 2 and 16 T. The high-field reversible magnetization data of a randomly oriented powder sample are well described assuming that MgB_2 is an…
We report on study of the electronic anisotropy of the newly discovered MgB2 superconductor using the in-plane resistivity measurements in magnetic field applied perpendicular and parallel to Mg and B planes of MgB2 single crystals. The results show temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field with anisotropy ratio increasing from 2.2 close to Tc up to about 3 below 30K. Our estimation of the in-plane and out-of-plane coherence length of about 68A and 23A and electronic mean-free path 240A and 60A respectively indicates MgB2 single crystal as approaching clean limit type-II sup…
The two tone intermodulation distortion arising in MgB2 thin films synthesized by hybrid physical-chemical vapour deposition is studied in order to probe the influence of the two bands on the nonlinear response of this superconductor. The measurements are carried out by using a dielectrically loaded copper cavity operating at 7 GHz. Microwave data on samples having critical temperatures above 41 K, very low resistivity values, and residual resistivity ratio larger than 10, are shown. The dependence of the nonlinear surface losses and of the third order intermodulation products on the power fee…
Iron is an important sheath material for fabrication of MgB2 wires. However, the effect of Fe doping on the superconducting properties of MgB2 remains controversial. In this work, we present results of nano-scale Fe particle doping in to MgB2. The Fe doping experiments were performed using both bulk and thin film form. It was found that Fe doping did not affect the lattice parameters of MgB2, as evidenced by the lack of change in the XRD peak positions for MgB2. Because of the high reactivity of nano-scale Fe particles, Fe doping is largely in the form of FeB at low doping level while Fe2B was…
We investigate the influence of carbon-ion irradiation on the superconducting critical properties of MgB$_2$ thin films. MgB$_2$ films of two thicknesses viz. 400 nm (MB400nm) and 800 nm (MB800nm) were irradiated by 350 keV C ions having a wide range of fluence, 1 x 10$^{13}$ - 1 x 10$^{15}$ C atoms/cm$^2$. The mean projected range ($R_p$) of 350 keV C ions in MgB$_2$ is 560 nm, thus the energetic C ions will pass through the MB400nm, whereas the ions will remain into the MB800nm. The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$), upper critical field ($H_{c2}$), $c$-axis lattice parameter, a…
We synthesized single crystalline and policrystalline MgB_2 under ambient pressures. The single crystals of MgB_2 were of good quality, where the crystal structure refinements were successfully converged with R = 0.020. The specific heat of policrystalline MgB_2 samples has been measured in a temperature range between 2 and 60 K in magnetic field up to 6 T. The measurement gave the coefficient of the linear term in the electronic specific heat, gamma = 3.51 mJ/K^2 mol, and the jump of the specific heat, 2.8 mJ/K^2 mol at 38.5 K. It is shown from the analysis of the specific heat that the elect…
NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ of $^{11}$B have been measured in superconducting polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ with $T_C^{ons}\cong 39.5K$. It is shown that $(T_{1}T)^{-1}$ and the Knight shift $K_{s}$ are independent of temperature and nearly isotropic above $T_C$. Both of these quantities are decreased gradually in going to superconducting state. According NMR data the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level is flat at the scale $\approx$ 500K. Some conclusions on the orbital content of the DOS at the Fermi level was done and compared with the results of the…
Highly dense MgB2 policrystalline bulk materials, obtained by reactive liquid infiltration, have been characterized in their superconducting transport and magnetic properties in magnetic field and in a temperature range of interest for the MgB2 compound. The products have a granular morphology of composite nature and their overall density affects their properties. The irreversibility line, Bc1(T) values, magnetically measured current densities and the trapped magnetic field are evaluated by susceptibility curves and hysteresis curves, both obtained by SQUID magnetometry for samples of differen…
Infrared absorption measurements in the range of 125 to 700 cm^(-1) have been carried out as a function of temperature upto 5 K in MgB2. The absorption spectrum is characterised by a broad band centred at 485 cm^{-1}, with shoulders at 333 and 387 cm^{-1}. Studies on the temperature dependence of absorption, indicate that these modes initially harden with the lowering of temperature, and this trend is arrested at ~ 100 K, below which they soften. Further, in the case of the mode at 333 cm^{-1}, there is a distinct softening associated with the superconducting transition at 39 K. The implicatio…
The electrical resistivity $ρ$ and upper critical field $H_{c2}$ were measured in MgB$_2$ disordered by nuclear reactor neutrons. We found that superconducting temperature $T_c$ decreases under irradiation from 40 to 5 K. Despite strong disordering (more than 10 dpa (displacements per atom)), the initial crystal structure is preserved. The residual resistivity $ρ_0$ increases from 0.35 to 2 m$Ω$ cm while $-dH_{c2}/dT$ remains approximately unchanged ($-dH_{c2}/dT \approx 0.5$ T/K), and such behavior may be interpreted as decrease in the density of electronic states.
First principles FLMTO-GGA electronic structure calculations of the new medium-$T_C$ superconductor (MTSC) $MgB_2$ and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the the existence of $p_{x,y}$-band holes at the $Γ$ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-$T_C$ superconductivity for $BeB_2$, $AlB_2$ $ScB_2$ and $YB_2$. The simulation of a number of $MgB_2$-based ternary systems using a supercell approach demonstrates that (i) the electron doping of $MgB_2$ (i.e., $MgB_{2-y}X_y$ with X=Be, C, N, O) and the creation of isoelectr…
We report on measurements of the specific heat of the recently discovered superconductor MgB$_2$ in the temperature range between 3 and 220 K. Based on a modified Debye-Einstein model, we have achieved a rather accurate account of the lattice contribution to the specific heat, which allows us to separate the electronic contribution from the total measured specific heat. From our result for the electronic specific heat, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$ to be of the order of 2, significantly enhanced compared to common weak-coupling values $\leq 0.4$. Our data also indicate …
Conventional doping methods that directly add C or a C-bearing species to Mg+B powder have the disadvantage of adding C inhomogeneously, yielding either under-reacted regions or blocking phases. Pre-doped B powder provides a more homogeneous distribution of the C dopant in MgB2. Powders containing varying amounts of C were used to produce in-situ MgB2 strands which showed high values of transport Jc (104 A/cm2 at 13.3T). Compared to SiC-added and malic acid-treated strands the pre-doped MgB2 showed both higher values of Birr and transport Jc, indicating that the pre-doping of B leads to more e…
The variation of TC in MgB2 has been systematically investigated for monovalent cation substitution in Mg1-xLixB2 and in Mg1-xCuxB2 and simultaneous cation and Carbon substitution in Mg0.80Li0.20B2-xCx and Mg0.95Cu0.05B2-xCx using dc resistivity and ac susceptibility techniques. TC seems to be uniquely determined by the electron count in the sample, being constant at the MgB2 value for electron counts lower than MgB2 but rapidly decreasing for larger electron counts. The Debye temperature extracted from fitting normal state resistivity to the Bloch-Gruneisen formula shows no systematics with T…
We examine the superconducting anisotropy $γ_c = (m_c / m_{ab})^{1/2}$ of a metallic high-$T_c$ superconductor MgB$_2$ by measuring the magnetic torque of a single crystal. The anisotropy $γ_c$ does not depend sensitively on the applied magnetic field at 10 K. We obtain the anisotropy parameter $γ_c = 4.31 \pm 0.14$. The torque curve shows the sharp hysteresis peak when the field is applied parallel to the boron layers. This comes from the intrinsic pinning and is experimental evidence for the occurrence of superconductivity in the boron layers.
MgB2 hollow wires have been produced with a new technique which uses a conventional wire manufacturing process but is applied to composite billets containing the elemental B and Mg precursors in an appropriate shape. The technique has been applied to the manufacture of both monofilamentary and multifilamentary wires of several tens meters length. The superconducting transport properties of the MgB2 hollow wires have been measured in magnetic field and in the temperature range from 4.2 to 30 K. Promising results are obtained, which indicate the possibility of application of these wires as super…
Superconducting properties of bulk, dense, pure MgB2 and doped (Mg1-xAx)B2 samples with A = Na, Ca, Cu, Ag, Zn and Al were studied for compositional ranges 0 < x < 0.20. The effect on pinning properties and critical current were investigated, particularly for A = aluminium. The samples were sintered and/or synthesised at high pressure - high temperature in a cubic multi-anvils press (typically : 3.5-6 GPa, 900-1000C). They were characterised by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and their superconducting properties were investigated by a.c. susceptibility, magnetisation (VSM and S…
Sandwich-type MgB2 Josephson tunnel junctions (MgB2/AlOx/MgB2) have been fabricated using as-grown MgB2 films formed by molecular beam epitaxy. The junctions exhibited substantial supercurrent and a well-defined superconducting gap (D=2.2~2.3mV). The superconducting gap voltage (D) agrees well with those of the smaller gap in the multi-gap scenario. The IcRN product is 0.4-1.3 mV at 4.2K, but approaches to 2.0 mV at 50 mK. The Ic has peculiar temperature dependence far from the Ambegaokar-Baratoff formula. It rapidly decreases with temperature, and disappears above T = 20 K, which is much lowe…
