We report experimental results of the field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance in samples of MgB2, produced by different methods. By sweeping the DC magnetic field at increasing and decreasing values, we have detected a magnetic hysteresis that can be ascribed to the different magnetic induction, due to the critical state of the fluxon lattice. The hysteresis observed in the bulk samples has an unusual shape, which cannot be justified in the framework of the critical-state models.
Field-induced suppression of the pi-band superconductivity and magnetic hysteresis in the microwave surface resistance of MgB_2 at temperatures near T_c
Superconducting transitions in the absence of magnetic field should be non-hysteretic. Here we address the fact that the drops in electrical resistance that have been interpreted as evidence of superconductivity in several hydrides under high pressure (so-called "superhydrides") show hysteresis. We argue that the experimental evidence shows that the observed hysteresis cannot be attributed to experimental artifacts but is intrinsic to the samples. Assuming that the drops in resistance signal a thermodynamic phase transition, we argue that the presence of intrinsic thermal hysteresis indicates …
The field-induced variations of the microwave surface resistance are investigated in two different samples of powdered MgB2. The experimental results can be justified in the framework of the Coffey and Clem model with fluxons moving in the flux-flow regime, provided that the anisotropy of the upper critical field is taken into due account. Assuming the angular dependence of the upper critical field expected from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau theory, we determine the anisotropy factor by fitting the experimental data of the field dependence of the microwave surface resistance. We show that th…
We report on the development of an analytical model describing the readout power and SQUID hysteresis parameter dependence of the resonator characteristics used for frequency encoding in microwave SQUID multiplexers. Within the context of this model, we derived the different dependencies by analyzing the Fourier components of the non-linear response of the non-hysteretic rf-SQUID. We show that our model contains the existing model as a limiting case, leading to identical analytical expressions for small readout powers. Considering the approximations we made, our model is valid for rf-SQUID hys…
The dependence of microwave impedance of a dc-biased Josephson Fluxonic Diode (JFD) under application of both dc magnetic field and rf excitation is calculated with a variety of conditions. For finite length of a JFD excited by a very low microwave excitation below its plasma frequency, applied dc magnetic field increases the rate of Vortex and Anti-Vortex (VAV) pair generation which fine-tunes the microwave resistance up to several factors more than its zero field microwave resistance (R0). Under this circumstance, adding a dc bias for moving VAVs causes oscillation-like features in microwave…
We investigate the magnetic hysteresis of a superconducting microstrip resonator with a high edge barrier. We measure the magnetic hysteresis while either sweeping a magnetic field or tuning the edge barrier by high microwave current. We show that the magnetic hysteresis of such a device is qualitatively different from that of one without an edge barrier and can be understood based on the generalized critical-state model. In particular, we propose and demonstrate a simple and intuitive method that relies on a plot of the quality factor versus the resonance frequency for revealing the physical …
In this paper, we describe the vortex dynamics under high-amplitude microwave drive and its effect on the surface resistance of superconductors. The vortex surface resistance is calculated with a Montecarlo approach, where the vortex motion equation is solved for a collection of vortex flux lines each oscillating within a random pinning landscape. This approach is capable of providing a detailed description of the microscopic vortex dynamics and in turn important insights into the microwave field amplitude dependence of the vortex surface resistance. The numerical simulations are compared agai…
Heat treatment is critically important to the performance of Nb3Sn superconducting strands. For very large Nb3Sn magnet coils, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Central Solenoid (CS) coils, heat treatment carries risk of temperature and time excursion, which may result in performance degradation. Therefore, it is prudent to study the effect of possible excursion on Nb3Sn performance. In this study, Nb3Sn strands used for ITER CS coils are heat treated at different temperatures for different times. Their critical current, residual resistance ratio and hysteresi…
Reduction of the field-dependent microwave surface resistance in YBa_2Cu_3O_7 with sub-micrometric BaZrO_3 inclusions as a function of BaZrO_3 concentration
