A review is given of the possibilities for the study of the kinematics and metallicities of the old populations in galaxies of the Local Group using SALT/PFIS observations of RR Lyrae variables.
It has recently been suggested that the discrepancy between the "long" and "short" distance moduli of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as inferred from the properties of the Cepheid and RR Lyrae variables, respectively, might be due to the action of "third parameters" between the Galaxy and the LMC, which would make the RR Lyraes in the old LMC globular clusters brighter than their Galactic counterparts by $\simeq 0.3 {mag}$. Through analysis of the RR Lyrae pulsation properties, we show that this idea is not supported by the available data. A satisfactory explanation of the problem has yet t…
We have obtained deep infrared $J$ and $K$ band observations of five fields located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) bar with the ESO New Technology Telescope equipped with the SOFI infrared camera. In our fields, 65 RR Lyrae stars catalogued by the OGLE collaboration were identified. Using different theoretical and empirical calibrations of the period-luminosity-metallicity relation, we find consistent LMC distance moduli values. Since the observed fields are situated very close to the center of the LMC, the correction for the tilt of the LMC bar with respect to the line of sight is neglig…
We use double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) stars from the MACHO variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) to estimate its distance, by utilizing photometric data, linear pulsation and stellar atmosphere models. If we set E_(B-V)=0.11 and [M/H]=-1.5 for LMC, we get M-m=18.52 mag, which is in agreement with the value obtained from Galactic cluster RRd stars. Although the formal statistical error (standard deviation) of M-m derived from the MACHO set is only 0.024 mag, the systematic errors are more substantial. These errors are mostly due to the zero point ambiguity of the temperature sc…
The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is widely considered a corner-stone of the astronomical distance scale, however a difference of 0.2-0.3 mag exists in its distance as predicted by the "short" and "long" distance scales. Distances to the LMC from Population II objects are founded on the RR Lyrae variables. We have undertaken an observational campaign devoted to the definition of the average apparent luminosity and to the study of the mass-metallicity relation for RR Lyraes in the bar of the LMC. These are compared with analogous quantities for cluster RR Lyraes. The purpose is to see whether an…
All galaxies that have been adequately examined so far have shown an extended stellar halo. To search for such a halo in the LMC we have obtained low-resolution spectra for 100 LMC RR Lyrae stars, of which 87 are in the field and 13 in the clusters NGC1835 and NGC2019. We measured radial velocities for 87 LMC RR Lyrae stars, and metallicities for 78 RR Lyrae stars, nearly tripling the previous sample. These targets are located in 10 fields covering a wide range of distances, out to 2.5 degrees from the center of the LMC. Our main result is that the mean velocity dispersion for the LMC RR Lyrae…
Metallicities for six double mode RR Lyrae's (RRd's) in the Large Magellanic Cloud have been estimated using the DeltaS method. The derived [Fe/H] values are in the range [Fe/H] = -1.09 to -1.78 (or -0.95 to -1.58, adopting a different calibration of [Fe/H] vs DeltaS). Two stars in our sample are at the very metal rich limit of all RRd's for which metal abundance has been estimated, either by direct measure (for field objects) or on the basis of the hosting system (for objects in globular clusters or external galaxies). These metal abundances, coupled with mass determinations from pulsational …
The MACHO Project has catalogued $\sim 8000$ RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, $\sim 1800$ in the Galactic bulge, and $\sim$ 50 in the Sgr dwarf galaxy. These variables are excellent distance indicators, and are used as tools to study the structure of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the bulge. The large datasets also probe uncommon pulsation modes. A number of double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd) are found in the Large Magellanic Cloud sample. These stars provide important clues for understanding the formation and evolution of the inner Galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud and the Sgr dwa…
We present the radial velocities, metallicities and the K-band magnitudes of 74 RR Lyrae stars in the inner regions of the LMC. The intermediate resolution spectra and infrared images were obtained with FORS1 at the ESO VLT and with the SOFI infrared imager at the ESO NTT. The best 43 RR Lyrae with measured velocities yield an observed velocity dispersion of 61+-7 km/s. We obtain a true LMC RR Lyrae velocity dispersion of 53 km/s, which is higher than the velocity dispersion of any other LMC population previously measured. This is the first empirical evidence for a kinematically hot, metal-poo…
Metallicities ([Fe/H]) from low resolution spectroscopy obtained with the Very Large Telescope (VLT) are presented for 98 RR Lyrae and 3 short period Cepheids in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Our metal abundances have typical errors of +/-0.17 dex. The average metallicity of the RR Lyrae stars is [Fe/H]=-1.48 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.06 on the scale of Harris (1996). The star-to-star scatter (0.29 dex) is larger than the observational errors, indicating a real spread in metal abundances. The derived metallicities cover the range -2.12 < [Fe/H] <-0.27, but there are only a few stars having [Fe/H…
Thirty eight long-period (P>10 days), apparently contact binary stars discovered by the OGLE-II project in the SMC appear to be Beta Lyrae-type systems with ellipsoidal variations of the cool components dominating over eclipse effects in the systemic light variations and in the total luminosity. A new period-luminosity- color (PLC) relation has been established for these systems; we call it the PLC-beta relation, to distinguish it from the Cepheid relation. Two versions of the PLC-beta relation - based on the (B-V)0 or (V-I)0 color indices - have been calibrated for 33 systems with (V-I)0>0.25…
We present the catalog of RR Lyrae stars from 2.4 square degrees of central parts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometric data were collected during four years of the OGLE-II microlensing survey. Photometry of each star was obtained using the Difference Image Analysis (DIA) method. The catalog contains 571 objects, including 458 RRab, 56 RRc variables, and 57 double mode RR Lyr stars (RRd). Additionally we attach a list of variables with periods between 0.18-0.26 days, which are probably delta Sct stars. Period, BVI photometry, astrometry, amplitude, and parameters of the Fourier …
This paper presents results of a fully automated search for multiperiodic RR Lyrae stars in the center of the Galaxy. The search was carried out on OGLE-II database created by means of image subtraction method. I found more than 2700 RR Lyrae stars with about 600 showing various kinds of multiperiodic behavior. Previous OGLE-I database contained only about 200 RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic Bulge, that is twelve times less than the current sample. There are two most interesting outcomes for Bulge: very high percentage of Blazhko stars and very low percentage of RRd stars. Blazhko effect was co…
We present results from the theoretical modelling of the observed B,V light curves of 14 RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The sample includes 7 fundamental and 7 first overtone pulsators covering the metallicity range from -2.12 to -0.79 dex in [Fe/H], with average value of -1.54 dex. Masses, intrinsic luminosities, effective temperatures, and reddenings were derived by fitting high accuracy multiband light curves available for these RR Lyrae stars to nonlinear convective pulsation models. Individual distance moduli were determined for each variable, they lead to an average distan…
The oldest and most metal-poor Milky Way stars form a kinematically hot halo, which motivates the two major formation scenarios for our galaxy: extended hierarchical accretion and rapid collapse. RR Lyrae stars are excellent tracers of old and metal-poor populations. We measure the kinematics of 43 RR Lyrae stars in the inner regions of the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) galaxy. The velocity dispersion, σ_{true}=53\pm10 km/s, indicates that a kinematically hot metal-poor old halo also exists in the LMC. This suggests that our galaxy and smaller late-type galaxies like the LMC have similar…
I demonstrate that the two unexpected results in the local Universe: anomalous intrinsic (V-I)_0 colors of RR Lyrae stars and clump giants in the Galactic center, and very short distances to Magellanic Clouds inferred from clump giants, can be at least partially resolved with a modified coefficient of selective extinction A_V/E(V-I). With this modification, I find a new clump-giant distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud, mu_{LMC} = 18.27 +/- 0.07, which is 0.09 larger than the Udalski (1998b) result. When distance estimates from the red clump, RR Lyrae stars and the eclipsing binary HV…
We have frequency analyzed 6391 variables classified earlier as fundamental mode RR Lyrae (RR0) stars in the MACHO database on the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The overwhelming majority of these variables have been proved to be indeed RR0 stars, whereas the remaining ones have fallen in one of the following categories: single- and double-mode Cepheids, binaries, first overtone and double-mode RR Lyrae stars and non-classified variables. Special attention has been paid to the Blazhko stars. We found altogether 731 Blazhko variables showing either a doublet or an equidistant triplet pattern at …
The distribution of RR Lyrae stars (RRLS) in the inner Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and the structure of the halo of the LMC delineated by these stars are studied here. RRLS identified by the OGLE II survey are used to estimate their number density distribution in the bar region of the LMC. To find their location, I estimated the scale-height of their distribution in the LMC using extinction corrected average magnitudes of ab type stars. The density is found to vary differently along and across the bar of the LMC, and the difference is found to be statistically significant. The density distri…
(abridged) New photometry and spectroscopy for more than a hundred RR Lyrae stars in two fields located close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) are used to derive new accurate estimates of the average magnitude, the local reddening, the luminosity-metallicity relation, and of the distance to the LMC. Metallicities from low resolution spectra obtained with the VLT have been derived for 101 RR Lyr's; the average value is [Fe/H]=-1.48+/-0.03 (sigma=0.29). An estimate of the reddening was obtained with 2 different methods, and we found: E(B-V)=0.116+/-0.017, and 0.086+/-0.017 mag in f…
The Hubble classification scheme of galaxies is based on blue-light appearance. Atlases reveal the rich variety of responses of the Population I component (`the mask') of gas and dust to the underlying, older, stellar population. However, the Population I component may only constitute 5 percent of the dynamical mass of the galaxy; furthermore, dusty masks are highly effective in hiding bars. We firstly discuss the rich duality in spiral structure, and highlight a near-infrared classification scheme for spiral galaxies. We next show that images secured with SALTICAM will be ideally suited to pr…
Fourier coefficents have been derived for the $V$ and $R$ light curves of 785 overtone RR Lyrae variables in 16 MACHO fields near the bar of the LMC. The $ϕ_{31}$ and $R_{21}$ coefficients have been compared with those of the first overtone RR Lyrae variables in the Galactic globular clusters NGC 6441, M107, M5, M3, M2, $ω$ Centauri and M68. The results indicate that many of the LMC variables have properties similar to the ones in M2, M3, M5 and the Oosterhoff type I variables in $ω$ Cen, but they are different from the Oosterhoff type II variables in $ω$ Cen. Equations derived from hydrodynam…
The present status of our knowledge of the distances to the Magellanic Clouds is evaluated from a post-Hipparcos perspective. After a brief summary of the effects of structure, reddening, age and metallicity, the primary distance indicators for the Large Magellanic Cloud are reviewed: The SN 1987A ring, Cepheids, RR Lyraes, Mira variables, and Eclipsing Binaries. Distances derived via these methods are weighted and combined to produce final "best" estimates for the Magellanic Clouds distance moduli.
We present the catalog of RR Lyrae stars discovered in a 4.5 square degrees area in the central parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Presented sample contains 7612 objects, including 5455 fundamental mode pulsators (RRab), 1655 first-overtone (RRc), 272 second-overtone (RRe) and 230 double-mode RR Lyr stars (RRd). Additionally we attach a list of several dozen other short-period pulsating variables. The catalog data include astrometry, periods, BVI photometry, amplitudes, and parameters of the Fourier decomposition of the I-band light curve of each object. We present density map of RR Ly…
The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in commo…
We present a 9 million star color-magnitude diagram (9M CMD) of the LMC bar. The 9M CMD reveals a complex superposition of different age and metallicity stellar populations, with important stellar evolutionary phases occurring over 3 orders of magnitude in number density. First, we count the non-variable supergiants, the associated Cepheids, and measure the effective temperatures defining the instability strip. Lifetime predictions of stellar evolution theory are tested, with implications for the origin of low-luminosity Cepheids. The highly-evolved AGB stars have a bimodal distribution in bri…
Recently obtained kinematic data has shown that the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) possesses an old stellar halo. In order to further characterize the properties of this halo, parametric King models are fit to the surface density of RR Lyrae stars. Using data from both the MACHO and OGLE II microlensing surveys, the model fits yield the center of their distribution at RA = 05:21.1+-0.8, Dec = -69:45+-6 (J2000) and a core radius of 1.42+-0.12 kpc. As a check the halo model is compared with RR Lyrae star counts in fields near the LMC's periphery previously surveyed with photographic plates. These …
I explore the hypothesis that many of the unusual aspects of the apparent stellar bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud are the result of viewing a triaxial stellar bulge that is embedded in a highly obscuring thin disk. Specifically, this hypothesis explains the observed off-center position of the bar within the disk, the differing apparent distances of the bar and disk, the near alignment of the bar's major axis position angle and the disk's line-of-nodes, and the asymmetric appearance of the bar itself. Indirectly, it may also play a role in explaining the microlensing rate toward the LMC and t…
We present WFPC2 VI photometry of a field in the halo of IC 1613, finding 13 RR Lyraes and 11 Cepheids. Our photometry of the red giant branch tip and red clump is used to derive distances to IC 1613, which are consistent with each other and with distances based on the variable stars. We compare these values with similarly-measured distances for the Magellanic Clouds, and are able to measure metallicity dependencies of the RR Lyrae and Cepheid distances by requiring consistent relative distance measurements from the four techniques. For metallicities of [Fe/H] = -1.3 (RR Lyraes) and -1.0 (Ceph…
We employ the very recent photometric data of the OGLE project together with stellar atmosphere and linear pulsation models to determine the distance modulus of the Small Magellanic Cloud from its double-mode Cepheids. Based on the requirement of obtaining the same distance modulus DM from the two types of variables (fundamental & first overtone and first & second overtone), we get DM=19.05 mag, with a very small statistical error (standard deviation) of 0.017 mag. Various systematic and zero point ambiguities (primarily those of the color - temperature transformation) lead to an error of +/-0…
We use the results from recent computations of updated non-linear convective pulsating models to constrain the distance modulus of Galactic globular clusters through the observed periods of first overtone RRc pulsators. The resulting relation between the mean absolute magnitude of RR Lyrae stars <M_V(RR)> and the heavy element content [Fe/H] appears well in the range of several previous empirical calibrations, but with a non linear dependence on [Fe/H] so that the slope of the relation increases when moving towards larger metallicities. On this ground, our results suggest that metal-poor ([Fe/…
(Abridged) We carried out a period analysis on ~3700 RR Lyrae stars spread over ~50 square degrees towards the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy (Sgr). The RR Lyraes are distributed almost evenly between Sgr and the Milky Way. For Sgr members, the average periods are 0.574 day and 0.322 day for RRab and RRc stars respectively. This places Sgr in the long-period tail of the Oosterhoff I group. We report the detection of 53 double-mode RR Lyrae stars (RRd) within our sample. The magnitude of 40 of these stars is consistent with membership in Sgr whereas 13 RRds are located within our Galaxy. We also foun…
RRd stars from the Magellanic Clouds form a well-defined band in the Petersen diagram. We explain this observed band with our evolutionary and pulsation calculations with assumed metallicity [Fe/H]=(-2,-1.3). Vast majority of RRd stars from LMC is confined to a narrower range of (-1.7,-1.3). The width of the band, at specified fundamental mode period, may be explained by mass spread at given metallicity. The shape of the band reflects the path of RRd stars within the RR Lyrae instability strip. We regard the success in explaining the Petersen diagram a support for our evolutionary models, whic…
The average of 14 recent measurements of the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) implies a true modulus of 18.50 +- 0.02 mag, and demonstrates a trend in the past 2 years of convergence toward a standard value. The distance indicators reviewed are the red clump, the tip of the red giant branch, Cepheid, RR Lyrae, and Mira variable stars, cluster main-sequence fitting, supernova 1987A, and eclipsing binaries. The eclipsing binaries yield a consistent distance on average; however, the internal scatter is twice as large as the average measurement error. I discuss parameters of LMC struct…
New B, V, I photometry was obtained for a sample of 152 variables (125 RR Lyrae's, 4 anomalous Cepheids, 11 classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and a delta Scuti star) in two regions near the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We derived complete and well sampled B and V light curves, very accurate periods, epochs of maximum light, amplitudes, intensity- and magnitude-averaged apparent luminosities for about 95% of the RR Lyrae stars. All these informations are contained in the photometric catalogue. Metallicities from the Fourier decomposition of the V light curves were derived fo…
Frequency analysis of more than 300 stars of the OGLE database on Sculptor galaxy has led to the discovery of 18 double-mode RR Lyrae (RRd) variables. This yields a 20% incidence rate for double-mode pulsation among the variables previously classified as first overtone RR Lyrae stars in this galaxy. Most of the RRd stars cover the period range of 0.47d < P_0 < 0.49d but there are two stars with longer periods of ~0.54d. All variables fit well in the pattern of the P_0 --> P_1/P_0 diagram, spanned by the RRd stars of the Galactic globular clusters and those of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). …
We present the I-band luminosity function of the red giant branch stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using the data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey (Zaritsky, Harris & Thompson, 1997). Selecting stars in uncrowded, low-extinction regions, a discontinuity in the luminosity function is observed at I_0 = 14.54 mag. Identifying this feature with the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB), and adopting an absolute TRGB magnitude of -4.05 +- 0.04 mag based on the calibration of Lee, Freedman & Madore (1993), we obtain a distance modulus of 18.59 +- 0.09 (random) +- 0.16 (systematic)…
We used the red clump stars from the photometric data of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment(OGLE II) survey and the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey (MCPS) for both the Clouds to estimate the depth. The observed dispersion in the magnitude and colour distribution of red clump stars is used to estimate the depth, after correcting for population effects, internal reddening within the Clouds and photometric errors. The observed dispersion due to the line of sight depth ranges from 0.023 mag to 0.45 mag (a depth of 500 pc to 10.4 kpc) for LMC and from 0.025 to 0.34 magnitude(a depth of …
We present a new distance determination to the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds using the newly developed red clump stars method (Paczynski and Stanek 1998). This new, single-step, Hipparcos calibrated method seems to be one of the most precise techniques of distance determination with very small statistical error due to large number of red clump stars usually available. The distances were determined independently along four lines-of-sight located at opposite sides of each Magellanic Cloud. The results for each line-of-sight are very consistent. For the SMC we obtain the distance modulus: m-M…
We present results from a well studied delta Scuti star discovered in the LMC. The absolute magnitude of the variable was determined from the PL relation for Galactic delta Scuti stars and from the theoretical modeling of the observed B,V,I light curves. The two methods give distance moduli for the LMC of 18.46+-0.19 and 18.48+-0.15, respectively, for a consistent value of the stellar reddening of E(B-V)=0.08+-0.02. We have also analyzed 24 delta Scuti candidates discovered in the OGLE II survey of the LMC, and 7 variables identified in the open cluster LW 55 and in the galaxy disk by Kaluzny …
We give a status report of convective Cepheid and RR Lyrae model pulsations. Some striking successes can be reported, despite the use of a rather simple treatment of turbulent convection with a 1D time-dependent diffusion equation for the turbulent energy. It is now possible to obtain stable double-mode (beat) pulsations in both Cepheid and RR Lyrae models with astrophysical parameters, i.e. periods and amplitude ratios, that are in agreement with observations. The turbulent convective models, however, have difficulties giving global agreement with the observations. In particular, the Magellan…
New candidate variable stars have been identified in the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC121, by applying both the image subtraction technique (ISIS, Alard 2000) and the Welch & Stetson (1993) detection method to HST WFPC2 archive and ACS proprietary images of the cluster. The new candidate variable stars are located from the cluster's Main Sequence up to Red Giant Branch. Twenty-seven of them fall on the cluster Horizontal Branch and are very likely RR Lyrae stars. They include the few RR Lyrae stars already discussed by Walker & Mack (1988). We also detected 20 Dwarf Cepheid candidates in …
We briefly review our photometric and spectroscopic study of RR Lyrae variable stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), that allowed us to reconcile the so-called "short" and "long" distance moduli of the LMC on the value mod_LMC=18.51 +/- 0.085 mag. Then we present preliminary results from the photometric study of a 33' x 34' area in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy containing the stellar clusters Fornax 3 (NGC 1049) and 6. We identified about 1000 candidate variables in this field of Fornax, and report the first detection and measure of about 60 RR Lyrae variable stars in the …
By using the full span of multicolor data on a representative sample of first overtone RR Lyrae stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) we revisit the problem of the incidence rate of the amplitude/phase-modulated (Blazhko) stars. Multicolor data, obtained by the MAssive Compact Halo Objects (MACHO) project, are utilized through a periodogram averaging method. This enables us to increase the number of detected multiperiodic variables by 18% relative to the number obtained by the analysis of the best single color data. We also test the maximum modulation period detectable in the present datas…
We present an overview of our study of the short period variable stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, and in the dwarf galaxies Fornax, Leo I, and NGC 6822. Light curves are presented for RR Lyrae stars, Anomalous Cepheids and, for the first time, for Dwarf Cepheids in the field and in the globular cluster #3 of the Fornax galaxy.
I demonstrate that the two unexpected results in the local Universe: 1) anomalous intrinsic (V-I)_0 colors of the clump giants and RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic center, and 2) very short distances to the Magellanic Clouds (LMC, SMC) as inferred from clump giants, are connected with each other. The (V-I)_0 anomaly is partially resolved by using the photometry from the phase-II of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) rather than phase-I. The need for V- or I-magnitude-based change in the bulge (V-I)_0 is one option to explain the remaining color discrepancy. Such change may origi…
More than 1300 variables classified provisionally as first overtone RR Lyrae pulsators in the MACHO variable star database of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) have been subjected to standard frequency analysis. Based on the remnant power in the prewhitened spectra, we found 70% of the total population to be monoperiodic. The remaining 30% (411 stars) are classified as one of 9 types according to their frequency spectra. Several types of RR Lyrae pulsational behavior are clearly identified here for the first time. Together with the earlier discovered double-mode (fundamental & first overtone) v…
