New candidate variable stars have been identified in the Small Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC121, by applying both the image subtraction technique (ISIS, Alard 2000) and the Welch & Stetson (1993) detection method to HST WFPC2 archive and ACS proprietary images of the cluster. The new candidate variable stars are located from the cluster's Main Sequence up to Red Giant Branch. Twenty-seven of them fall on the cluster Horizontal Branch and are very likely RR Lyrae stars. They include the few RR Lyrae stars already discussed by Walker & Mack (1988). We also detected 20 Dwarf Cepheid candidates in the central region of NGC121. Our results confirm the "true" globular cluster nature of NGC121, a cluster that is at the young end of the Galactic globulars' age range.
High-resolution UVES/VLT spectra of B12, an extreme pole-on Be star in the SMC cluster NGC330, have been analysed using non-LTE model atmospheres to obtain its chemical composition relative to the SMC standard star AV304. We find a general underabundance of metals which can be understood in terms of an extra contribution to the stellar continuum due to emission from a disk which we estimate to be at the ~25% level. When this is corrected for, the nitrogen abundance for B12 shows no evidence of enhancement by rotational mixing as has been found in other non-Be B-type stars in NGC330, and is inc…
We report ISO (Infrared Space Observatory) observations of a new infrared source discovered in the vicinity of the young populous cluster NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The object was observed with ISOCAM at 4.5, 6.75 and 11.5 $μ$m and shows a prominent mid-infrared excess, indicating the presence of a dust shell. The available observations of the optical counterpart together with the mid-infrared ISOCAM data suggest that this object is most likely a post-AGB star, or a Be supergiant. Cluster membership and candidate evolutionary scenarios are discussed briefly.
We present a photometric analysis of the star clusters Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC339, NGC416, Lindsay 38, and NGC419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in the F555W and F814W filters. Our color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) extend ~3.5 mag deeper than the main-sequence turnoff points, deeper than any previous data. Cluster ages were derived using three different isochrone models: Padova, Teramo, and Dartmouth, which are all available in the ACS photometric system. Fitting observed ridgelines for each cluster, we provide a hom…
High resolution spectra of seven early B-type giant/supergiant stars in the SMC cluster NGC330 are analysed to obtain their chemical compositions relative to SMC field and Galactic B-type stars. It is found that all seven stars are nitrogen rich with an abundance approximately 1.3 dex higher than an SMC main-sequence field B-type star, AV304. They also display evidence for deficiencies in carbon, but other metals have abundances typical of the SMC. Given the number of B-type stars with low rotational projected velocities in NGC330 (all our targets have vsini < 50 km/s), we suggest that it is u…
In the quest of understanding how star formation occurs and propagates in the low metallicity environment of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we acquired deep F555W (~V), and F814W (~I) HST/ACS images of the young and massive star forming region NGC 346. These images and their photometric analysis provide us with a snapshot of the star formation history of the region. We find evidence for star formation extending from ~10 Gyr in the past until ~150 Myr in the field of the SMC. The youngest stellar population (~3 +/- 1 Myr) is associated with the NGC 346 cluster. It includes a rich component o…
We present results from a Chandra observation of the NGC346 cluster. This cluster contains numerous massive stars and is responsible for the ionization of N66, the most luminous HII region and the largest star formation region in the SMC. In this first paper, we will focus on the characteristics of the main objects of the field. The NGC346 cluster itself shows only relatively faint X-ray emission (with L_X^{unabs} ~ 1.5 times 10^{34} erg s^{-1}), tightly correlated with the core of the cluster. In the field also lies HD5980, a LBV star in a binary (or possibly a triple system) that is detected…
We present new XMM-Newton results on the field around the NGC346 star cluster in the SMC. This continues and extends previously published work on Chandra observations of the same field. The two XMM-Newton observations were obtained, respectively, six months before and six months after the previously published Chandra data. Of the 51 X-ray sources detected with XMM-Newton, 29 were already detected with Chandra. Comparing the properties of these X-ray sources in each of our three datasets has enabled us to investigate their variability on times scales of a year. Changes in the flux levels and/or…
We present results from a Chandra observation of the NGC346 cluster, which is the ionizing source of N66, the most luminous HII region and the largest star formation region in the SMC. In the first part of this investigation, we have analysed the X-ray properties of the cluster itself and the remarkable star HD 5980. But the field contains additional objects of interest. In total, 75 X-ray point sources were detected in the Chandra observation: this is five times the number of sources detected by previous X-ray surveys. We investigate here their characteristics in detail. Due to high foregroun…
Observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC330 and its surrounding region were obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We investigated the B and Be star properties and proportions in this environment of low metallicity. We also searched for rapid variability in Be stars using photometric databases. With spectroscopic measurements we characterized the emission and properties of Be stars. By cross-correlation with photometric databases such as MACHO and OGLE, we searched for binaries in our sample of hot stars, as well as for short-term variability in Be sta…
NGC 602 is a young stellar cluster located in a peripheral region of the Small Magellanic Cloud known as the wing. Far from the main body of the galaxy and abutting the Magellanic Bridge, the SMC's wing is characterized by low gas and stellar content. With deep optical imaging from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we have discovered an extensive pre-Main Sequence (PMS) population, with stellar masses in the range 0.6-3 Solar masses. These low mass PMS stars formed coevally with the central cluster about 4 Myr ago. Spitzer Space Telescope (Spitzer) …
Spectrophotometry in the 3400-7400 range is presented for 13 areas of the brightest H II region in the SMC: NGC 346. The observations were obtained at CTIO with the 4-m telescope. Based on these observations its chemical composition is derived. The helium and oxygen abundances by mass are given by: Y(SMC)=0.2405+-0.0018 and O(SMC)=0.00171+-0.00025. From models and observations of irregular and blue compact galaxies it is found that dY/dO=3.5+-0.9 and consequently that the primordial helium abundance by mass is given by: Yp=0.2345+-0.0026 (1-sigma). This result is compared with values derived f…
We search for effects of metallicity on B and Be stars in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) and in the Milky Way (MW). We extend our previous analysis of B and Be stars populations in the LMC to the SMC. The rotational velocities of massive stars and the evolutionary status of Be stars are examined with respect to their environments. Spectroscopic observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC 330 and its surrounding region have been obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We determine fundamental parameters for B and Be stars with the GIRFI…
Pulsation in beta Cep and SPB stars are driven by the kappa mechanism which depends critically on the metallicity. It has therefore been suggested that beta Cep and SPB stars should be rare in the Magellanic Clouds which have lower metallicities than the solar neighborhood. To test this prediction we have observed the open SMC cluster NGC 371 for 12 nights in order to search for beta Cep and SPB stars. Surprisingly, we find 29 short-period B-type variables in the upper part of the main sequence, many of which are probably SPB stars. This result indicates that pulsation is still driven by the k…
We determine the age, metallicity and initial mass function of three clusters, namely NGC 265, K~29, NGC 290, located in the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. In addition, we derive the history of star formation in the companion fields. We make use of ACS/WFC HST archive data. For the clusters, the age and metallicity are derived fitting the integrated luminosity function with single synthetic stellar population by means of the $χ^2$ minimization. For the companion fields, the history of star formation is derived using the $χ^2$ minimization together with the downhill-simplex method. For…
Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations of the B III resonance line at 2066A have been obtained and analyzed for two Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) B-type stars. While boron is not detected in either star, upper limits to the boron abundance are set, with 12+log(B/H) le 1.6 for both AV 304 and NGC 346-637. The upper limits are consistent with the relationship between boron and oxygen previously reported for Galactic disk stars. The SMC upper limits are discussed in light of that galaxy's star formation history, present oxygen abundance, and its present cosmic ray flux. The UV spectrum has also …
In the third part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346/N~66 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we focus on the large number of low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope Observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We investigate the origin of the observed broadening of the pre-main sequence population in the $V-I$, $V$ CMD. The most likely explanations are either the presence of differential reddening or an age spread among the young stars. Assuming the latter, simulations indicate that we cannot exclu…
We present determination of age of clusters from 2.4 square degree region of the SMC bar. The photometric data were taken from the BVI maps of the SMC and catalog of clusters in this galaxy obtained during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. For 93 well populated SMC clusters their age is derived with the standard procedure of isochrone fitting. The distribution of age of cluster from the SMC is presented. It indicates either non-uniform process of cluster formation or very effective disruption of clusters.
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
The list of 127 eclipsing stars in optical coincidence with star clusters from the SMC is presented. It was prepared using the catalogs of eclipsing systems and star clusters from the SMC based on observations collected during the OGLE-II microlensing project. Location of 12 eclipsing stars in the color-magnitude diagram of clusters allows to exclude their membership. Photometric data of 73 systems support their membership. The remaining 42 objects were found in loose, faint clusters and therefore no conclusive statement about their membership can be made. All presented data are available from…
The LMC and SMC are rich in binary star clusters, and some mergers are expected. It is important to characterize single clusters, binary clusters and candidates to mergers. We selected a sample of star clusters in each Cloud with this aim. Surface photometry of 25 SMC and 22 LMC star clusters was carried with the ESO Danish 1.54 m telescope. 23 clusters were observed for the first time for these purposes. We fitted Elson, Fall and Freeman (1987, EFF) profiles to the data, deriving structural parameters, luminosities and masses. We also use isophotal maps to constrain candidates to cluster inte…
We present B and V photometry of the outlying SMC star cluster BS196 with the 4.1-m SOAR telescope. The photometry is deep (to V~25) showing ~3 mag below the cluster turnoff point (TO) at Mv=2.5 (1.03 Msun). The cluster is located at the SMC distance. The CMD and isochrone fittings provide a cluster age of 5.0+-0.5 Gyr, indicating that this is one of the 12 oldest clusters so far detected in the SMC. The estimated metallicity is [Fe/H]=-1.68+-0.10. The structural analysis gives by means of King profile fittings a core radius Rc=8.7+-1.1 arcsec (2.66+-0.14 pc) and a tidal radius Rt=69.4+-1.7 ar…
We have obtained spectra at the Ca II triplet of individual red giants in seven SMC star clusters whose ages range from ~4 to 12 Gyr. The spectra have been used to determine mean abundances for six of the star clusters to a typical precision of 0.12 dex. When combined with existing data for other objects, the resulting SMC age-metallicity relation is generally consistent with that for a simple model of chemical evolution, scaled to the present-day SMC mean abundance and gas mass fraction. Two of the clusters (Lindsay 113 and NGC 339), however, have abundances that ~0.5 dex lower than that expe…
We present a CCD investigation of the poorly known SMC young Globular Cluster NGC 458. The NTT data, presented here, allowed us to study in detail the more internal regions of the cluster which are less contaminated by the field. On the basis of theoretical isochrones, a preliminary evaluation of the age is also given.
We present the results of our investigation of the intermediate-age star cluster BS 90, located in the vicinity of the HII region N 66 in the SMC, observed with HST/ACS. The high-resolution data provide a unique opportunity for a very detailed photometric study performed on one of the rare intermediate-age rich SMC clusters. The complete set of observations is centered on the association NGC 346 and contains almost 100,000 stars down to V ~28 mag. In this study we focus on the northern part of the region, which covers almost the whole stellar content of BS 90. We construct its stellar surface …
An analysis of high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra of two B-type main sequence stars, NGC 346-11 and AV 304, in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), has been undertaken, using the non-LTE TLUSTY model atmospheres to derive the stellar parameters and chemical compositions of each star. The chemical compositions of the two stars are in reasonable agreement. Moreover, our stellar analysis agrees well with earlier analyses of H II regions. The results derived here should be representative of the current base-line chemical composition of the SMC interstellar medium as derived from B-type stars.
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the only dwarf galaxy in the Local Group known to have formed and preserved populous star clusters continuously over the past 12 Gyr. These clusters provide a unique, closely spaced set of single-age, single-metallicity tracers for a detailed study of the SMC's age-metallicity relation. Spectroscopic metallicity measurements, however, exist only for 6 of its clusters. Here we present metallicities for 7 additional SMC clusters based on Ca II triplet observations. The total sample comprises clusters spanning an age range of 12 Gyr. Complemented by age estimat…
We present an analysis of high resolution VLT-FLAMES spectra of 61 B-type stars with relatively narrow-lined spectra located in 4 fields centered on the Milky Way clusters; NGC3293 & NGC4755 and the Large and Small Magellanic cloud clusters; NGC2004 and NGC330. For each object a quantitative analysis was carried out using the non-LTE model atmosphere code TLUSTY; resulting in the determination of their atmospheric parameters and photospheric abundances of the dominant metal species (C, N, O, Mg, Si, Fe). The results are discussed in relation to our earlier work on 3 younger clusters in these g…
We present both low and high-dispersion abundance analyses of giants drawn from the zero proper motion sample near NGC 121. For the sample of 35 stars, the mean metallicity of the SMC field near NGC 121 is [Fe/H]=-1.3 with a real dispersion of 0.4 dex. The most metal-rich stars are at -0.5 dex and the most metal-poor stars at -2.1 dex. The velocity dispersion of the sample is 25 km/s. The dispersion of various kinematic samples in the SMC is independent of age. The RGB colors are consistent with Galactic globular clusters of similar metallicity. The field population, however, does not have an …
Deep F555W and F814W Hubble Space Telescope ACS images are the basis for a study of the present day mass function (PDMF) of NGC346, the largest active star forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We find a PDMF slope of Gamma=-1.43+/-0.18 in the mass range 0.8-60 Mo, in excellent agreement with the Salpeter Initial Mass Function (IMF) in the solar neighborhood. Caveats on the conversion of the PDMF to the IMF are discussed. The PDMF slope changes, as a function of the radial distance from the center of the NGC 346 star cluster, indicating a segregation of the most massive stars. Th…
In this paper we discuss the cluster and field star formation in the central part of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The main goal is to study the correlation between young objects and their interstellar environment. The ages of about 164 associations and 311 clusters younger than 1 Gyr are determined using isochrone fitting. The spatial distribution of the clusters is compared with the HI maps, with the HI velocity dispersion field, with the location of the CO clouds and with the distribution of young field stars. The cluster age distribution supports the idea that clusters formed in the last 1 G…
H2 column densities towards CO clouds in the LMC and SMC are estimated from their far-infrared surface brightness and HI column density. N(H2)/I(CO) conversion factors are X(LMC) = 1.3 and X(SMC) = 12 (unit: 10**21 mol cm**-2 (K km/s)**-1). LMC and SMC contain total (warm) H2 masses of 1.0 and 0.75 x 10**8 M(sun) respectively. Similar local H2/HI mass ratios are found in the magellanic irregulars NGC 1569 (X = 16), NGC 55, 4214 and 6822 (X = 3--6) and in NGC 4449 as well as the extragalactic HII regions NGC 604, 595 and 5461 in M 33 and M 101 (X = 1--2). The CO--H2 conversion factor X depends …
We present new optical spectroscopic and archival Spitzer IRAC photometric observations of a B-type star in the SMC cluster NGC 346, NGC 346:KWBBe 200. We detect numerous Fe II, [O I], and [Fe II] lines, as well as strong P-Cygni profile H I emission lines in its optical spectrum. The star's near-IR color and optical to IR SED clearly indicate the presence of an infrared excess, consistent with the presence of gas and warm, T ~800 K, circumstellar dust. Based on a crude estimate of the star's luminosity and the observed spectroscopic line profile morphologies, we find that the star is likely t…
We present the results of a detailed UV and optical spectral analysis of the properties of 6 dwarf O-type stars in the SMC H II region NGC 346. Stellar parameters, chemical abundances, and wind parameters have been determined using NLTE line blanketed models calculated with the photospheric code, Tlusty, and with the wind code, CMFGEN. The results, in particular iron abundances, obtained with the two NLTE codes compare very favorably, demonstrating that basic photospheric parameters of O dwarfs can be reliably determined using NLTE static model atmospheres. The two NLTE codes require a microtu…
We present the first results of our variability survey for the globular cluster NGC 362. We found numerous variable stars in the field including 23 RR Lyr stars, 4 eclipsing binaries and 5 other pulsating stars. Four of the RR Lyr ae stars are located behind the cluster, possibly in the farthest extensions of the SMC.
Complete samples of 2MASS stars in 3 fields of differing metallicities (and possibly differing age distributions) have been extracted and cross-correlated with MACHO and ISO data to determine their variability and mass-loss properties. In each M_K histogram a fall-off in numbers is seen above the tip of the RGB. The luminosity of the tip increases with metallicity as does the average J-K at given M_K. The proportion of stars with high H-K increases at lower metallicities. This results from the increasing proportion of C stars. All 3 fields contain similar types of variables, mainly short-perio…
We demonstrate that single and binary star clusters can be formed during cloud-cloud collisions triggered by the tidal interaction between the Large and Small Magellanic clouds. We run two different sets of self-consistent numerical simulations which show that compact, bound star clusters can be formed within the centers of two colliding clouds due to strong gaseous shocks, compression, and dissipation, providing the clouds have moderately large relative velocities (10-60 km s$^{-1}$). The impact parameter determines whether the two colliding clouds become a single or a binary cluster. The sta…
At low metallicity, B-type stars show lower loss of mass and, therefore, angular momentum so that it is expected that there are more Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Milky Way. However, till now, searches for Be stars were only performed in a very small number of open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. Using the ESO/WFI in its slitless spectroscopic mode, we performed a Halpha survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. Eight million low-resolution spectra centered on Halpha were obtained. For their automatic analysis, we developed the ALBUM code. Here, we present the observat…
The early evolution of star clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) has been the subject of significant recent controversy, particularly regarding the importance and length of the earliest, largely mass-independent disruption phase (referred to as "infant mortality"). Here, we take a fresh approach to the problem, using an independent, homogeneous data set of UBVR imaging observations, from which we obtain the SMC's cluster age and mass distributions in a self-consistent manner. We conclude that the (optically selected) SMC star cluster population has undergone at most ~30 per cent (1 sig…
We present in this study flux-calibrated integrated spectra in the range 3600-6800A for 18 concentrated SMC clusters. Cluster reddening values were estimated by interpolation between the extinction maps of Burstein & Heiles (1982, AJ, 87, 1165) and Schlegel et al. (1998, ApJ, 500, 525). The cluster parameters were derived from the template matching procedure by comparing the line strengths and continuum distribution of the cluster spectra with those of template cluster spectra with known parameters and from the equivalent width (EW) method. In this case, new calibrations were used together wit…
We use Hubble Space Telescope archival images to measure central surface brightness profiles of globular clusters around satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. We report results for 21 clusters around the LMC, 5 around the SMC, and 4 around the Fornax dwarf galaxy. The profiles are obtained using a recently developed technique based on measuring integrated light, which is tested on an extensive simulated dataset. Our results show that for 70% of the sample, the central photometric points of our profiles are brighter than previous measurements using star counts with deviations as large as 2 mag/a…
We present the age distributions for star clusters and individual stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) based on data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey by Zaritsky and collaborators. The age distribution of the SMC clusters shows a steep decline, dN_{cluster}/dt \propto t^{-0.85\pm0.15}, over the period 10^7 < t <10^9 yr. This decline is essentially identical to that observed previously for more massive clusters in the merging Antennae galaxies, and also for lower-mass embedded clusters in the solar neighborhood. The SMC cluster age distribution therefore provides additional ev…
The Magellanic Clouds (MCs) present a rich system of stellar clusters that can be used to probe the dynamical and chemical evolution of these neighboring and interacting irregular galaxies. In particular, these stellar clusters (SCs) present combinations of age and metallicity that are not found for this class of objects in the Milky Way, being therefore very useful templates to test and to calibrate integrated light simple stellar population (SSP) models applied to unresolved distance galaxies. On its turn, the age and metallicity for a cluster can be determined spatially resolving its stars,…
To study the effects of metallicity and evolution on the appearance of the Be phenomenon in the B stars population, we observed several fields in the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC, respectively) which have different metallicities. Thanks to the FLAMES-GIRAFFE multi-fibres spectrograph on the VLT-UT2, we obtained spectra of 520 stars in the LMC-NGC2004 and SMC-NGC330 regions. We used 2 settings at medium resolution: R=8600 for the red setting which contains H$α$ and R=6400 for the blue setting which contains H$γ$, H$δ$, \ion{He}{I} 4026, 4388, 4471 Å. The latter setting was use…
Colour-magnitude diagrams are presented for the first time for L32, L38, K28 (L43), K44 (L68) and L116, which are clusters projected onto the outer parts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometry was carried out in the Washington system $C$ and $T_1$ filters allowing the determination of ages by means of the magnitude difference between the red giant clump and the main sequence turnoff, and metallicities from the red giant branch locus. The clusters have ages in the range 2-6 Gyr, and metallicities between $-1.65<$ [Fe/H] $<-1.10$, increasing the sample of intermediate-age clusters i…
We present an analysis of the spatial distribution of various stellar populations within the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We use optically selected stellar samples with mean ages between ~9 and ~1000 Myr, and existing stellar cluster catalogues to investigate how stellar structures form and evolve within the LMC/SMC. We use two statistical techniques to study the evolution of structure within these galaxies, the $Q$-parameter and the two-point correlation function (TPCF). In both galaxies we find the stars are born with a high degree of substructure (i.e. are highly fractal) and that the…
We present results of age determination based on the standard procedure of isochrone fitting for about 600 star clusters younger than about 1.2 Gyr from the central parts of the LMC. Comparison of age distributions of star clusters from the LMC and the SMC shows that cluster formation histories are different in these galaxies. The age distribution of the LMC clusters reveals bursty nature of cluster formation in this galaxy, with contrast to the relatively uniform distribution of cluster ages in the SMC. We detected three extended peaks in the distribution of ages of LMC clusters, located at a…
We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 F160BW, F555W and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colours of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and broad band colours and bolometric corrections for LMC and SMC metallicities. The use of the far-UV F160BW filter enables accurate determination of the effective temperatures for stars in the vicinity of the…
This work investigates the possible supernova kick velocities imposed on HMXB systems in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Comparisons are made between the location of such systems and the locations of young, stellar clusters on the premise that these may represent the birthplace of many of these systems. Measurements of the separation of clusters and HMXBs,and an estimate of the typical lifetimes of these systems, leads to a minimum average space velocity 30 km/s. This value is compared to theoretical estimates.
We present 100 multiple cluster candidates selected from the OGLE catalog of star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Statistical analysis shows that the significant fraction of these objects may constitute physical systems. Coeval ages of 102 components of multiple objects suggest their common origin. 53 components have very different ages. The comparison of the population of multiple clusters candidates from the SMC and the LMC shows that: a) distributions of sizes and ages of multiple and single clusters from the Magellanic Clouds are very similar, b) the difference of sizes of componen…
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations in F450W (~B) and F555W (~V) of the intermediate- age populous star clusters NGC 121, NGC 339, NGC 361, NGC 416, and Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these seven populous star clusters in order to improve our understanding of the formation chronology of the SMC. We analyzed the V vs (B-V) and M_V vs (B-V)_0 color-magnitude diagrams of these populous Sm…
We have obtained spectra for 103 published globular cluster candidates in the Sculptor Group galaxies NGC 253 and NGC 55. On the basis of radial velocities and digitized plate images, 14 globular clusters are identified in NGC 253 and one probable globular cluster is identified in NGC 55. The majority of the objects in the sample appear to be background galaxies. We have obtained and analysed COSMOS plate scans of NGC 253 and NGC 55 and use these along with the spectroscopically identified clusters to define new samples of globular cluster candidates in the two galaxies which should have reduc…
We present an analysis of age, metal abundance, and positional data on populous clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with the ultimate aim of determining the line-of-sight (LOS) depth of the SMC using these clusters as proxies. Our dataset contains 12 objects and is limited to clusters with the highest quality data for which the ages and abundances are best known and can be placed on an internally consistent scale. We have analyzed the variation of the clusters' properties with position on the sky and with line-of-sight depth. Based on this analysis, we draw the following conclusions. …
We present our photometric study of the stellar association NGC 602 in the wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data were taken in the filters F555W and F814W using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Photometry was performed using the ACS module of the stellar photometry package DOLPHOT. We detected more than 5,500 stars with a magnitude range of 14 \lsim m_{555} \lsim 28 mag. Three prominent stellar concentrations are identified with star counts in the observed field, the association NGC 602 itself, and two clusters, one of them not being…
In a sample of six young open clusters we investigated 1753 objects using the narrow band, three filter Delta a photometric system resulting in the detection of eleven bona-fide magnetic chemically peculiar (CP) stars and five Be or metal-weak stars. The results for the distant cluster NGC 3105 is most important because of the still unknown influence of the global metallicity gradient of the Milky Way. These findings confirm that CP stars are present in open clusters of very young ages (log t > 6.90) at galactocentric distances up to 11.4 kpc. For all programme clusters the age, reddening, and…
We present high-quality near-Infrared photometry of four Bulge metal-rich globular clusters, namely: NGC 6304, NGC 6569, NGC 6637 and NGC 6638. By using the observed Colour-Magnitude Diagrams we derived a photometric estimates of the cluster reddening and distance. We performed a detailed analysis of the Red Giant Branch, presenting a complete description of morphologic parameters and evolutionary features (Bump and Tip). Photometric estimates of the cluster metallicity have been obtained by using the updated set of relations (published by our group) linking the metal abundance to a variety of…
We analyse CCD broad band (UBV(RI)c) photometric data obtained in the fields of the poorly studied open clusters NGC 2425 and NGC 2635. Both clusters are found to be of intermediate age thus increasing the population of open clusters known to be of the age of, or older than, the Hyades. More explicitly, we find that NGC 2425 is a 2.2 Gyr old cluster, probably of solar metallicity, located at 3.5 kpc from the Sun. NGC 2635 is a Hyades age (600 Myr) cluster located at a distance of 4.0 kpc from the Sun. Its Colour Magnitude Diagram reveals that it is extremely metal poor for its age and position…
The Antlia galaxy cluster is the third nearest galaxy cluster after Virgo and Fornax. We used the wide-field MOSAIC camera of the 4-m CTIO telescope to search in the brightest cluster galaxies for globular cluster systems, which were detected in the two larger ellipticals -- NGC 3258 and NGC 3268. These galaxies each contain several thousand clusters; NGC 3258 more than NGC 3268. The color distributions of the globular cluster systems are clearly bimodal. The peak colors agree with those of other ellipticals. The radial number density profiles of the globular cluster systems are indistinguisha…
We use Spitzer Space Telescope observations from the Spitzer Survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (S3MC) to study the young stellar content of N66, the largest and brightest HII region in the SMC. In addition to large numbers of normal stars, we detect a significant population of bright, red infrared sources that we identify as likely to be young stellar objects (YSOs). We use spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to classify objects as ordinary (main sequence or red giant) stars, asymptotic giant branch stars, background galaxies, and YSOs. This represents the first large-scale attempt at b…
We have investigated 1008 objects in the area of five intermediate age open clusters (NGC 2099, NGC 3114, NGC 6204, NGC 6705 and NGC 6756) via the narrow band Delta a-system. The detection limit for photometric peculiarity is very low (always less than 0.009mag) due to the high number of individual frames used (193 in total). We have detected six peculiar objects in NGC 6705 and NGC 6756 from which one in the latter is almost certainly an unreddened late type foreground star. The remaining five stars are probably cluster members and bona fide chemically peculiar objects (two are lambda Bootis …
The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) Adaptive Optics Bonnette (AOB) has been used to obtain high angular resolution JHK images of the centers of the metal-poor globular clusters NGC5272 (M3), NGC6205 (M13), NGC6287, and NGC6341 (M92). The color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) derived from these data include the upper main sequence and most of the red giant branch (RGB), and the cluster sequences agree with published photometric measurements of bright stars in these clusters. The photometric accuracy is limited by PSF variations, which introduce systematic errors of a few hundredths of a magnitu…
