The Tycho supernova remnant (SNR), as one of the few historical SNRs, has been widely studied in various wavebands. Observations show evidence that Tycho is expanding in a medium with density gradient and possibly interacting with dense ambient medium toward the northeast direction. From the FCRAO CO survey of the outer Galaxy, we have identified a patch of molecular clouds in this area and have conducted a follow-up observation with Nobeyama 45m radio telescope. The high-resolution (16\arcsec) Nobeyama data shows that a large molecular cloud surrounds the SNR along the northeastern boundary. We suggest that the Tycho SNR and the molecular cloud are located in the Perseus arm and that the dense medium interacting with the SNR is possibly the molecular cloud. We also discuss the possible connection between the molecular cloud and the Balmer-dominated optical filaments, and suggest that the preshock gas may be accelerated within the cosmic ray and/or fast neutral precursor.
The Carina Nebula is an extremely bright southern HII region embedded in a giant molecular cloud and contains some of the most massive stars known in our Galaxy. We are undertaking a multi-wavelength study of the Carina Nebula in order to examine the detailed kinematics and distribution of the molecular and ionised gas, and to look for further evidence of ongoing star formation. We have used an antenna temperature thresholding algorithm on the Bell Laboratories 13CO Milky Way Survey to create a catalog of 1,400 molecular clouds. Of these, 281 clouds were selected for having well-determined kinematic distances. The scaleheight, luminosity, internal velocity dispersion, and size of the cloud sample are analyzed to show that clouds smaller than ~200,000 solar masses have a scaleheight which is about 35 pc, roughly independent of cloud mass, while larger clouds, the Giant Molecular Clouds, have a reduced scaleheight which declines with increasing cloud mass.
It is argued that if cosmic rays penetrate into molecular clouds, the total energy they lose can exceed the energy from galactic supernovae shocks. It is shown that most likely galactic cosmic rays interacting with the surface layers of molecular clouds are efficiently reflected and do not penetrate into the cloud interior. Low-energy cosmic rays ($E<1$ GeV) that provide the primary ionization of the molecular cloud gas can be generated inside such clouds by multiple shocks arising due to supersonic turbulence.
A population of molecular clouds with a significantly greater scale height than that of Giant Molecular Clouds has been identified by examining maps of the latitude distribution of the $^{12}CO(1-0)$ emission in the first quadrant of the Galaxy. These clouds are found by identifying emission more than 2.6 times the scale-height away from the galactic midplane (centroid of CO emission) at the tangent points. Since the distance to the tangent points is known, we know the height and the sizes of these clouds. They are smaller and fainter than the GMCs and do not seem to be gravitationally bound. …
The Monoceros R2 region was first recognized as a chain of reflection nebulae illuminated by A- and B-type stars. These nebulae are associated with a giant molecular cloud that is one of the closest massive star forming regions to the Sun. This chapter reviews the properties of the Mon R2 region, including the namesake reflection nebulae, the large scale molecular cloud, global star formation activity, and properties of prominent star forming regions in the cloud.
In a recent paper, Elmegreen (2000) has made a cogent case, from an observational point of view, that the lifetimes of molecular clouds are comparable to their dynamical timescales. If so, this has important implications for the mechanisms by which molecular clouds form. In particular we consider the hypothesis that molecular clouds may form not by {\it in situ} cooling of atomic gas, but rather by the agglomeration of the dense phase of the interstellar medium (ISM), much, if not most, of which is already in molecular form.
Observations of both star-forming regions and young, gas-free stellar associations indicate that most nearby molecular clouds form stars only over a short time span before dispersal; large-scale flows in the diffuse interstellar medium have the potential for forming clouds sufficiently rapidly, and for producing stellar populations with ages much less than the lateral crossing times of their host molecular clouds. This book chapter reviews the current state of observations of magnetic fields in diffuse H I and in dense molecular clouds. It covers techniques for measuring magnetic fields, the analysis of the observations, and the role of magnetic fields in the physics of interstellar clouds and in the star formation process.
The second survey of the molecular clouds in 12CO (J = 1-0) was carried out in the Large Magellanic Cloud by NANTEN. The sensitivity of this survey is twice as high as that of the previous NANTEN survey, leading to a detection of molecular clouds with M_CO > 2 x 10^4 M_sun. We identified 272 molecular clouds, 230 of which are detected at three or more observed positions. We derived the physical properties, such as size, line width, virial mass, of the 164 GMCs which have an extent more than the beam size of NANTEN in both the major and minor axes. The nearby dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 205 offers a unique opportunity for high resolution studies of the interstellar medium in an elliptical galaxy. This paper investigates the distribution of molecular gas, molecular line ratios, and the relationships between atomic gas, molecular gas, and dust in NGC 205. The line ratios 12CO(2-1)/(1-0) and 12CO(1-0)/13CO(1-0) in one of the molecular clouds in NGC 205 are consistent with the ratios found in other elliptical galaxies and in Galactic giant molecular clouds; they suggest that the CO in this cloud is probably subthermally excited. Polytropic models are reasonably successful in acounting for the observed features of molecular clouds. Multi-pressure polytropes include the various pressure components that are important in molecular clouds, whereas composite polytropes provide a representation for the core halo structure. Small, very dense (n~10^{11} cm^{-3}) molecular clouds have been proposed as models for both dark matter and for extreme scattering events. We discuss an extension to the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method for the evaluation of the mean magnetic field strength in molecular clouds to cases where the spatial orientation of the field is known. We apply the results to M17, using previously published data.
We report the discovery of molecular hydrogen absorption in a Galactic high-velocity cloud (HVC) in the direction of the Large Magellanic Cloud. For the same HVC we derive an iron abundance which is half of the solar value. Thus, all evidence points to a Galactic origin for high-velocity cloud complex in front of the LMC.
Recent high resolution numerical simulations have suggested that the interstellar atomic hydrogen clouds have a complex two-phase structure. Since molecular clouds form through the contraction of HI gas, the question arises as to whether this structure is maintained in the molecular phase or not. In this paper, we review some of the properties of dense molecular cloud cores. The results presented here rely on three-dimensional numerical simulations of isothermal, magnetized, turbulent, and self-gravitating molecular clouds (MCs) in which dense core form as a consequence of the gravo-turbulent fragmentation of the clouds. In particular we discuss issues related to the mass spectrum of the cores, their lifetimes and their virial balance.
The universality of interstellar turbulence is examined from observed structure functions of 27 giant molecular clouds and Monte Carlo modeling. We show that the structure functions, dv=v0 l^gamma, derived from wide field imaging of CO J=1-0 emission from individual clouds are described by a narrow range in the scaling exponent, gamma, and the scaling coefficient, v0. The similarity of turbulent structure functions emphasizes the universality of turbulence in the molecular interstellar medium and accounts for the cloud-to-cloud size-line width relationship initially identified by Larson (1981)…
Molecular hydrogen clouds can contribute substantially to the galactic halo< dark matter and may lead to the birth of massive halo objects (MHOs) observed indirectly by microlensing. We present a method to detect these molecular clouds in the halo of M31 using the Doppler shift effect. We also consider the possibility to directly observe MHOs in the halo of M31 via their infrared emission.
We re-examine critically the estimates of the duration of different phases of star formation and the lifetimes of molecular clouds, based on the ages of T-Tauri stars, age spreads of stars in clusters, and statistics of pre-stellar cores. We show that all available observational data are consistent with lifetimes of molecular clouds comparable to 10 Myr, as well as with the predictions of the theory of self-initiated, ambipolar-diffusion--controlled star formation. We conclude that there exists no observational support for either "young" molecular clouds or "rapid" star formation.
The data from the Nobeyama Radio Observatory 45 m telescope Galactic Center CO survey have been analyzed to generate a compilation of molecular clouds with intense CO emission in this region. Clouds are identified in an automated manner throughout the main part of the survey data for all CO emission peaks exceeding 10 K ($T_R^*$). Correlations between the size, velocity dispersion, virial mass, and the CO luminosity, for the molecular clouds in the Galactic center were shown. We present the first survey of submillimeter CO 4-3 emission in the Magellanic Clouds. The survey is comprised of 15 6'x6' maps obtained using the AST/RO telescope toward the molecular peaks of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We have used these data to constrain the physical conditions in these objects, in particular their molecular gas density and temperature. We find that there are significant amounts of molecular gas associated with most of these molecular peaks, and that high molecular gas temperatures are pervasive throughout our sample. I present new results on the extinction and on the YSO content of the Chamaeleon I cloud using the star count method that I have implemented and applied to DENIS and optical data. Application of this method to other nearby Large Molecular Clouds is in progress and is briefly outlined.
One of the most informative techniques of studying magnetic fields in molecular clouds is based on the use of starlight polarization and polarized emission arising from aligned dust. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. I briefly review basic physical processes involved in grain alignment.
Giant molecular clouds (GMCs) are the sites of star formation in the Galaxy. Many of their properties can be understood in terms of a model in which the GMCs and the star-forming clumps within them are in approximate pressure equilibrium, with turbulent motions treated as a separate pressure component.

The residence time of dust grains inside turbulent molecular clouds is calculated. Earlier estimates of this time by Boland & de Jong (1982) have been criticized by Prasad et al. (1987) for not taking into account properly the turbulent character of the velocity field in molecular clouds which implies that the trajectory of a dust grain should be treated as a random walk. Taking some minimal assumptions regarding the turbulent velocity field a time scale is derived that depends on the Reynolds number of the flow. We extend recent numerical results (Dobbs et. al. 2006) on molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies by including a multi-phase medium. The addition of a hot phase of gas enhances the structure in the cold gas, and significantly increases the fraction of molecular hydrogen that is formed when the cold gas passes through a spiral shock. The difference in structure is reflected in the mass power spectrum of the molecular clouds, which is steeper for the multi-phase calculations. In many clusters of galaxies there is evidence for cooling flow in the central regions. A possibility is that a fraction of the gas forms cold molecular clouds. We investigate the minimum temperature which can be reached by clouds in cooling flows by computing the cooling function due to H2, HD and CO molecules. As an example, we determine the minimum temperature achievable by clouds in the cooling flow of PKS 0745-191.
We present the first three-dimensional calculations of Radiation Driven Implosion of Molecular Clouds including self-gravity and ionization. We discuss the effects of initial density perturbations on the dynamics of ionizing globules and show that the onset of gravitational collapse can be significantly delayed for a multiple of the implosion timescale. We demonstrate that Radiation Driven Implosion could be an efficient process for injecting disordered kinetic energy into molecular clouds in the vicinity of massive stars.
Recent progress in the understanding of star formation is summarized. A consistent picture is emerging where molecular clouds form with turbulent velocity fields and clumpy substructure, imprinted already during their formation. The clouds are initially supported by supersonic turbulence which dissipates however within massive clumps on short timescales, of order their local dynamical timescales. As a result, the clumps collapse and fragment into stellar clusters. It appears that the majority of rapidly-, well-localized gamma-ray bursts with undetected, or dark, optical afterglows, or `dark bursts' for short, occur in clouds of size R > 10L_{49}^{1/2} pc and mass M > 3x10^5L_{49} M_{sun}, where L is the isotropic-equivalent peak luminosity of the optical flash. We present Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of molecular cloud formation in spiral galaxies. These simulations model the response of a non-self-gravitating gaseous disk to a galactic potential. The spiral shock induces high densities in the gas, and considerable structure in the spiral arms, which we identify as molecular clouds. We regard the formation of these structures as due to the dynamics of clumpy shocks, which perturb the flow of gas through the spiral arms. We have obtained 12CO and 13CO J=1-0 observations of the nearby spiral galaxy M33 to try to resolve the long-standing discrepancy between 12CO/13CO line ratios measured in Galactic giant molecular clouds and external galaxies. Interferometer maps of the molecular cloud MC20 give a 12CO/13CO line ratio of 7.5+/-2.1, which agrees reasonably well with the line ratio measured in Galactic giant molecular clouds. In this course we review the theory of incompressible homogeneous turbulence at an elementary level, and discuss the similarities and differences expected in the compressible case, relevant to the interstellar medium and molecular clouds. We stress that a general definition of turbulence applicable to the compressible case should not rely on the Kolmogorov $k^{-5/3}$ spectrum nor on an energy cascade from large to small scales. We have extensively mapped a sample of dense molecular clouds (L1512, TMC-1C, L1262, Per 7, L1389, L1251E) in lines of HC3N, CH3OH, SO and C^{18}O. We demonstrate that a high degree of chemical differentiation is present in all of the observed clouds. We analyse the molecular maps for each cloud, demonstrating a systematic chemical differentiation across the sample, which we relate to the evolutionary state of the cloud. We detected \co-line emission from a complex of dark cloud located at about 250 pc from M 31's center, which is the most conspicuous extinction feature within the central few hund red pc as observed in $B,V,R,I$-band CCD imaging. The darkest cloud has a 30-pc size, and the virial mass is estimated to be $\sim 8.7\time s 10^5\Msun$, which is the most massive molecular cloud in the bulge of M31. The conversion factor from CO intensity to \htwo column mass is found to be by an order of magnitude greater than that for galactic molecular clouds. The results of photoelectric photometry in the Vilnius seven-color system are given for 152 stars down to 12.2 mag in the area of the molecular cloud MBM 12 and the dust clouds L1454 and L1457 in Aries. The results of photometric classification of stars are also given. The investigation of interstellar extinction in the area is described in the next paper.
We demonstrate that the observationally inferred rapid onset of star formation after parental molecular clouds have assembled can be achieved by flow-driven cloud formation of atomic gas, using our previous three-dimensional numerical simulations. Star clusters are formed in molecular clouds which are believed to be the birth places of most stars. From recent observational data, Lada & Lada 2003 estimated that only 4% to 7% of the clusters embedded inside molecular clouds have survived. An important mechanism for the disruption of embedded (bound)-clusters is the dispersion of the parent cloud by UV radiation, stellar winds and/or supernova explosions. We investigate the propagation of a shock wave into a warm neutral medium and cold neutral medium by one-dimensional hydrodynamic calculations with detailed treatment of thermal and chemical processes. Our main result shows that thermal instability inside the shock-compressed layer produces a geometrically thin, dense layer in which a large amount of hydrogen molecules is formed. Linear stability analysis suggests that this thermally-collapsed layer will fragment into small molecular cloudlets. Velocity anisotropy induced by MHD turbulence is investigated using computational simulations and molecular line observations of the Taurus molecular cloud. A new analysis method is presented to evaluate the degree and angle of velocity anisotropy using spectroscopic imaging data of interstellar clouds. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated on model observations derived from three dimensional velocity and density fields from the set of numerical MHD simulations that span a range of magnetic field strengths. The particle acceleration process at a shock wave, in the presence of the second-order Fermi acceleration in the turbulent medium near the shock, is discussed as an alternative explanation for the observed flat synchrotron spectra of supernova remnants (SNRs) in molecular clouds. We argue that medium Alfvén Mach number shocks considered by Chevalier (1999, ApJ, in press) for such SNRs can naturally lead to the observed spectral indices.
A vital ingredient of DNA molecule named adenine may be produced by successive addition of HCN during molecular cloud collapse and star formation. We compute its abundance in a collapsing cloud as a function of the reaction rate and show that in much of the circumstances the resulting amount may be sufficient to contaminate planets, comets and meteorites. We introduce a $f$-parameter which may be used to study the abundance where radiative association takes place.
It is believed that the observed diffuse gamma ray emission from the galactic plane is the result of interactions between cosmic rays and the interstellar gas. 2d hydrodynamical simulations are performed to examine the evaporation and condensation processes of giant molecular clouds in the hot phase of the interstellar medium. The evolution of cold and dense clouds is calculated in the subsonic stream of a hot tenuous plasma. Our code includes self-gravity, heating and cooling processes and heat conduction by electrons. Significant differences occur between simulations with and without heat conduction.
The observations of microlensing events in the Large Magellanic Cloud suggest that a sizable fraction (\sim 50%) of the galactic halo is in the form of MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) with an average mass $\sim 0.27 M_{\odot}$, assuming a standard spherical halo model. We describe a scenario in which dark clusters of MACHOs and cold molecular clouds (mainly of H_2) naturally form in the halo at galactocentric distances larger than 10-20 kpc.
The formation of massive stellar clusters in turbulent molecular clouds is investigated. We include artificial star formation and energy feedback of newly born stars. The obtained systems are not likely to survive. Case studies to determine conditions necessary for forming bound clusters will be done in the future.

These new data provide a lower opacity tracer of molecular clouds and improved angular and spectral resolution than previous surveys of molecular line emission along the Galactic Plane. We present an investigation on effect of the ion-neutral (or ambipolar) diffusion heating rate on thermal phases of a molecular cloud. We use the modeling of ambipolar diffusion with two-fluid smoothed particle hydrodynamics, as discussed by Nejad-Asghar & Molteni. We present the results of a comparative study of HI narrow self-absorption (HINSA), OH, 13CO, and C18O in five dark clouds. The HINSA follows the distribution of the emission of the carbon monoxide isotopologues, and has a characteristic size close to that of 13CO. This confirms that the HINSA is produced by cold HI which is well mixed with molecular gas in well-shielded regions. The ratio of the atomic hydrogen density to total proton density for these sources is 5 to 27 x 10^{-4}. We generate random Gaussian turbulent velocity fields with a Kolmogorov spectrum and use these to obtain synthetic line-of-sight velocity profiles. The profiles are found to be similar to line profiles observed in molecular clouds. We suggest methods for analysing measured line profiles to test whether they might arise from Gaussian Kolmogorov turbulence.
We have made an unbiased survey for molecular clouds in the Galactic Warp. This survey, covering an area of 56 square degrees at l = 252 deg to 266 deg and b = -5 deg to -1 deg, has revealed 70 molecular clouds, while only 6 clouds were previously known in the region. The number of molecular clouds is, then, an order of magnitude greater than previously known in this sector at R > 14.5 kpc. Photoelectric magnitudes and color indices in the Vilnius seven-color system for 152 stars are used to investigate the interstellar extinction in the area of the Aries molecular cloud MBM 12, coinciding with the L1454 and L1457 dust clouds. Spectral types, absolute magnitudes, color excesses, interstellar extinctions and distances of the stars are determined. The plot of interstellar extinction Av versus distance shows that the dust cloud is situated at a distance of 325 pc, at 180 pc from the Galactic plane, and its true diameter is about 11 pc. The interstellar medium (ISM) provides a unique laboratory for highly supersonic, driven hydrodynamics turbulence. We present a theory of such turbulence, confirm it by numerical simulations, and use the results to explain observational properties of interstellar molecular clouds, the regions where stars are born.
