The second survey of the molecular clouds in 12CO (J = 1-0) was carried out in the Large Magellanic Cloud by NANTEN. The sensitivity of this survey is twice as high as that of the previous NANTEN survey, leading to a detection of molecular clouds with M_CO > 2 x 10^4 M_sun. We identified 272 molecular clouds, 230 of which are detected at three or more observed positions. We derived the physical properties, such as size, line width, virial mass, of the 164 GMCs which have an extent more than the beam size of NANTEN in both the major and minor axes. The CO luminosity and virial mass of the clouds show a good correlation of M_VIR propto L_CO^{1.1 +- 0.1} with a Spearman rank correlation of 0.8 suggesting that the clouds are in nearly virial equilibrium. Assuming the clouds are in virial equilibrium, we derived an X_CO-factor to be ~ 7 x 10^20 cm^-2 (K km s^-1)^-1. The mass spectrum of the clouds is fitted well by a power law of N_cloud(>M_CO) proportional to M_CO^{-0.75 +- 0.06} above the completeness limit of 5 x 10^4 M_sun. The slope of the mass spectrum becomes steeper if we fit only the massive clouds; e.g., N_cloud (>M_CO) is proportional to M_CO^{-1.2 +- 0.2} for M_CO > 3 x 10^5 M_sun.
We present our catalog of U, B, V, and I stellar photometry of the central 64 sq. deg. area of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U, B, and V from Massey's bright star catalog and I from the near-infrared sky survey DENIS) are used to confirm our observational uncertainty estimates. We fit stellar atmosphere models to the optical data to check the consistency of the photometry for individual stars across the passbands and to estimate the line-of-sight extinction. Finally, we use the estimated line-of-sight exti…
We present an extinction map of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using 204,502 stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey point source catalog. We first use the NICE method to determine the reddening distribution, \ehk and \ejh, which we compare to the HI distribution to find a near-infrared reddening law of $\ejh/\ehk=1.20\pm 0.04$. A visual extinction map ($\sim 6^\circ\times 6^\circ$) of the LMC is created using the NICER method; at 4 arcmin resolution, a mean value of $\av=0.38$ mag is found. We derive the LMC CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor, $\x{LMC}$, independent of assumptions about the vi…
We present our catalog of U, B, V, and I stellar photometry of the central 18 sq. degree area of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We combine our data with the 2MASS and DENIS catalogs to provide, when available, U through K_S data for stars. Internal and external astrometric and photometric tests using existing optical photometry (U, B, and V from Massey's bright star catalog; B, V, and I from the microlensing database of OGLE and I from the near-infrared sky survey DENIS) are used to determine the observational uncertainties and identify systematic errors. We fit stellar atmosphere models to the o…
Hαand [O III] narrow band, wide field (7 * 7 degree), CCD images of the Small Magellanic Cloud were compared and a catalogue of candidate planetary nebulae and Hαemission-line stars was compiled. The catalogue contains 131 planetary nebulae candidates, 23 of which are already known to be or are probable planetary nebulae or very low excitation objects. Also, 218 emission-line candidates have been identified with 113 already known. Our catalogue therefore provides a useful supplement to those of Meyssonnier & Azzopardi (1993) and Sanduleak, MacConnell & Davis Phillip (1978). Further observation…
The Master Catalogue of stars towards the Magellanic Clouds (MC2) is a multi-wavelength reference catalogue. The current paper presents the first results of the MC2 project. We started with a massive cross-identification of the two recently released near-infrared surveys: the DENIS Catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds (DCMC) with more than 1.3 million sources identified in at least two of the three DENIS filters (I J Ks) and the 2nd Incremental Release of the 2MASS point source catalogue (J H Ks) covering the same region of the sky. Both point source catalogues provide an unprecedented weal…
We present the Catalog of Cepheids from the SMC which contains data for 2049 objects detected in the 2.4 square degree area of central parts of the SMC. For each object period, BVI photometry, astrometry, and R_21, ϕ_21 parameters of the Fourier decomposition of I-band light curve are provided. The Catalog is based on observations collected during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. Tests of completeness performed in overlapping parts of adjacent fields indicate that completeness of the Catalog is very high: about 92%. Statistics and distributions of basic parameters of Cepheids are also presente…
We present new version of the OGLE-II catalog of eclipsing binary stars detected in the Small Magellanic Cloud, based on Difference Image Analysis catalog of variable stars in the Magellanic Clouds containing data collected from 1997 to 2000. We found 1351 eclipsing binary stars in the central 2.4 square degree area of the SMC. 455 stars are newly discovered objects, not found in the previous release of the catalog. The eclipsing objects were selected with the automatic search algorithm based on the artificial neural network. The full catalog is accessible from the OGLE Internet archive.
We present the Catalog of Cepheids from the LMC. The Catalog contains 1333 objects detected in the 4.5 square degree area of central parts of the LMC. About 3.4*10^5 BVI measurements of these stars were collected during the OGLE-II microlensing survey. The Catalog data include period, BVI photometry, astrometry, and R_21, ϕ_21 parameters of the Fourier decomposition of I-band light curve. The vast majority of objects from the Catalog are the classical Cepheids pulsating in the fundamental or first overtone mode. The remaining objects include Population II Cepheids and red giants with pulsation…
We present the catalog of star clusters found in the area of about 5.8 square degree in the central regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud. It contains data for 745 clusters. 126 of them are new objects. For each cluster equatorial coordinates, radius, approximate number of members and cross-identification are provided. Photometric data for all clusters presented in the catalog and Atlas consisting of finding charts and color-magnitude diagrams are available electronically from the OGLE Internet archive.
We present the catalog of clusters found in the area of ~2.4 square degree in the central regions of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The catalog contains data for 238 clusters, 72 of them are new objects. For each cluster equatorial coordinates, radii, approximate number of members, cross-identification, finding chart and color magnitude diagrams: V-(B-V) and V-(V-I) are provided. Photometric data for all clusters presented in the catalog are available from the OGLE Internet archive.
We have compiled the near infrared Point Source Catalogue (PSC) towards the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) extracted from the data obtained with the Deep Near Infrared Survey of the Southern Sky - DENIS (Epchtein et al. 1997). The catalogue covers an area of of 19.87* 16 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(5h27m20s, -69o00'00'') for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 14.7* 10 square degrees centered on (RA, DEC)=(h02m40s, -73o00'00'' for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) at the epoch J2000. It contains about 1300000 sources towards the LMC and 300000 sources towards the SMC each detected in at lea…
We present a Catalog of high proper motion (HPM) stars detected in the foreground of central parts of the Magellanic Clouds. The Catalog contains 2161 objects in the 4.5 square degree area towards the LMC, and 892 HPM stars in the 2.4 square degree area towards the SMC. The Catalog is based on observations collected during four years of the OGLE-II microlensing survey. The Difference Image Analysis (DIA) of the images provided candidate HPM stars with proper motion as small as 4 mas/yr. These appeared as pseudo-variables, and were all measured astrometrically on all CCD images, providing typic…
The recent publications of the DENIS Catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) with more than 1.3 million sources identified in at least two of the three DENIS filters (I J K_s) and of the incremental releases of the 2MASS point source catalogues (J H K_s) covering the same region of the sky, provide an unprecedented wealth of data related to stellar populations in the MCs. In order to build a reference catalogue of stars towards the Magellanic Clouds, we have performed a cross-identification of these two catalogues. This implied developing new tools for cross-identification and data minin…
A survey of extended objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud was carried out on the ESO/SERC R and J Sky Survey Atlases, checking entries in previous catalogs and searching for new objects. The census provided 6659 objects including star clusters, emission-free associations and objects related to emission nebulae. Each of these classes contains 3 subclasses with intermediate properties, which are used to infer total populations. The survey includes cross-identifications among catalogs and we present 3246 new objects. We provide accurate positions, classification, homogeneous measurements of size…
Surveys using CCD detectors are retrieving bright and faint cataloged clusters and revealing new ones in the Magellanic Clouds. This paper discusses the contribution of the OGLE Survey to the overall census of star clusters in the SMC. A detailed cross-identification indicates that the new objects in the SMC OGLE catalog are 46. The increase in the number of cataloged clusters is ~ 7%, the total sample being ~ 700. This updated census includes embedded clusters in HII regions and a density range attaining loose systems.
A 21 cm neutral hydrogen interferometric survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) combined with the Parkes multi-beam HI single-dish survey clearly shows that the HI gas is distributed in the form of clumps or clouds. The HI clouds and clumps have been identified using a thresholding method with three separate brightness temperature thresholds ($T_b$). Each catalog of HI cloud candidates shows a power law relationship between the sizes and the velocity dispersions of the clouds roughly following the Larson Law scaling $σ_v \propto R^{0.5}$, with steeper indices associated with dynamically ho…
We present a catalog containing 290 LMC and 590 SMC Cepheids which have been obtained using the two 4k $\times$ 8k CCD cameras of the EROS~2 microlensing survey. The Cepheids were selected from 1,134,000 and 504,000 stars in the central regions of the LMC and SMC respectively, that were monitored over 150 nights between October 1996 and February 1997, at a rate of one measurement every night. For each Cepheid the light curves, period, magnitudes in the EROS~2 filter system, Fourier coefficients, J2000 coordinates and cross-identifications with objects referenced in the CDS Simbad database are …
We present the catalog of 1459 eclipsing binary stars detected in the central 2.4 square degree area of the Small Magellanic Cloud during the OGLE-II microlensing search. The sample includes objects brighter than I=20 mag with periods ranging from about 0.3 to 250 days. The average completeness of the catalog is about 80%. Statistics of the entire sample and well detached systems, suitable for distance determination, are also presented. The catalog, finding charts and BVI photometry data for all objects are available from the OGLE Internet archive.
We present the catalog of RR Lyrae stars from 2.4 square degrees of central parts of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The photometric data were collected during four years of the OGLE-II microlensing survey. Photometry of each star was obtained using the Difference Image Analysis (DIA) method. The catalog contains 571 objects, including 458 RRab, 56 RRc variables, and 57 double mode RR Lyr stars (RRd). Additionally we attach a list of variables with periods between 0.18-0.26 days, which are probably delta Sct stars. Period, BVI photometry, astrometry, amplitude, and parameters of the Fourier …
We present the results of a pair of 100 ksec Chandra observations in the Small Magellanic Cloud to survey high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), stars and LMXBs/CVs down to Lx = 4.3 x 10^32 erg/s The two SMC Deep Fields are located in the most active star forming region of the bar, with Deep Field-1 positioned at the most pulsar-rich location identified from previous surveys. Two new pulsars were discovered in outburst: CXOU J004929.7-731058 (P=892s), CXOU J005252.2-721715 (P=326s), and 3 new HMXB candidates were identified. Of 15 Be-pulsars now known in the field, 13 were detected, with pulsations…
We present the first edition of a catalog of variable stars found in the Magellanic Clouds using OGLE-II data obtained during four years: 1997-2000. The catalog covers about 7 square degrees of the sky - 21 fields in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 11 fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud. All variables were found with the Difference Image Analysis (DIA) software. The catalog is divided into two sections. The DC section contains FITS reference images (obtained by co-adding 20 best frames for each field) and profile photometry (DoPHOT) of all variable stars on those images. The AC section contain…
We present the first part of a new catalog of variable stars (OIII-CVS) compiled from the data collected in the course of the third phase of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE-III). In this paper we describe the catalog of 3361 classical Cepheids detected in the ~40 square degrees area in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The sample consists of 1848 fundamental-mode (F), 1228 first-overtone (1O), 14 second-overtone (2O), 61 double-mode F/1O, 203 double-mode 1O/2O, 2 double-mode 1O/3O, and 5 triple-mode classical Cepheids. This sample is supplemented by the list of 23 ultra-low amplit…
Using the USNO CCD Astrograph all-sky Catalog (UCAC2), we measure the mean proper motion of the two Magellanic Clouds. Appropriately selected LMC populations show a proper motion (<μRA>, <μDEC>) ~ (+0.84,+4.32) that is significantly higher, in <μDEC>, than currently accepted Hipparcos-like values, <μRA>, <μDEC> ~ (+1.94,-0.14). A higher <μRA> value is also found for the SMC. Interestingly, the mean UCAC2 LMC proper motion agrees very well with the only work in the literature (Anguita et al. 2000) pointing to an unbound Magellanic Clouds-Milky Way interaction. Nonetheless, the implications of t…
The catalogue of the Johnson-Cousins B,V and I light curves obtained for 162 variable stars (135 RR Lyrae, 4 candidate Anomalous Cepheids, 11 Classical Cepheids, 11 eclipsing binaries and 1 delta Scuti star) in two areas close to the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud is presented along with coordinates, finding charts, periods, epochs, amplitudes, and mean quantities (intensity- and magnitude-averaged luminosities) of the variables with full coverage of the light variations. A star by star comparison is made with MACHO and OGLE II photometries based on both variable and constant stars in commo…
There are 509 expanding neutral hydrogen shells catalogued in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), all apparently very young, with dynamical ages of a few Myr. To examine their relationship with young stellar objects we cross-correlated the shell catalogue with various catalogues of OB associations, super giants, Cepheids, WR stars, supernova remnants, and star clusters. The incidence of chance line-ups was estimated via Monte-Carlo simulations, and found to be high. However, it is important that there are 1.5 times more shells that are {\em not} spatially correlated to an OB association, than sh…
In the second part of the OGLE-III Catalog of Variable Stars (OIII-CVS) we present 197 type II Cepheids and 83 anomalous Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The sample of type II Cepheids consists of 64 BL Her stars, 96 W Vir stars and 37 RV Tau stars. Anomalous Cepheids are divided into 62 fundamental-mode and 21 first-overtone pulsators. These are the largest samples of such types of variable stars detected anywhere outside the Galaxy. We present the period-luminosity and color-magnitude diagrams of stars in the sample. If the boundary period between BL Her and W Vir stars is adopt…
We present Cepheids located in the close neighborhood of star clusters from the Magellanic Clouds. 204 and 132 such stars were found in the LMC and SMC, respectively. The lists of objects were constructed based on catalogs of Cepheids and star clusters, recently published by the OGLE-II collaboration. Location of selected Cepheids on the sky indicates that many of them are very likely cluster members. Photometric data of Cepheids and clusters are available from the OGLE archive.
This paper presents accurate homogeneous positions, velocities and other pertinent properties for 460 newly discovered and 169 previously known planetary nebulae (PNe) in the central 25 sq deg bar region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Candidate emission sources were discovered using a deep, high resolution H-alpha map of the LMC obtained by median stacking a dozen 2 hour H-alpha exposures taken with the UK Schmidt Telescope (UKST). Our spectroscopic followup of more than 2,000 compact (ie. <20 arcsec) H-alpha emission candidates uncovered has tripled the number of PNe in this area. All o…
We present the results of a systematic search for point-like and moderately extended soft (0.1-2.4 keV) X-ray sources in a raster of nine pointings covering a field of 8.95 deg^2 and performed with the ROSAT PSPC between October 1991 and October 1993 in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud. We detect 248 objects which we include in the first version of our SMC catalogue of soft X-ray sources. We set up seven source classes defined by selections in the count rate, hardness ratio and source extent. We find five high luminosity super-soft sources (1E 0035.4-7230, 1E 0056.8-7146, RX J0048.4…
We present the catalog of 2580 eclipsing binary stars detected in 4.6 square degree area of the central parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud. The photometric data were collected during the second phase of the OGLE microlensing search from 1997 to 2000. The eclipsing objects were selected with the automatic search algorithm based on an artificial neural network. Basic statistics of eclipsing stars are presented. Also, the list of 36 candidates of detached eclipsing binaries for spectroscopic study and for precise LMC distance determination is provided. The full catalog is accessible from the OGL…
We present a catalogue of new spectral types for hot, luminous stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The catalogue contains 4161 objects, giving an order of magnitude increase in the number of SMC stars with published spectroscopic classifications. The targets are primarily B- and A-type stars (2862 and 853 objects respectively), with 1 Wolf-Rayet, 139 O-type, and 306 FG stars, sampling the main sequence to ~mid-B. The selection and classification criteria are described, and objects of particular interest are discussed, including UV-selected targets from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UIT) …
We present the catalog of RR Lyrae stars discovered in a 4.5 square degrees area in the central parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Presented sample contains 7612 objects, including 5455 fundamental mode pulsators (RRab), 1655 first-overtone (RRc), 272 second-overtone (RRe) and 230 double-mode RR Lyr stars (RRd). Additionally we attach a list of several dozen other short-period pulsating variables. The catalog data include astrometry, periods, BVI photometry, amplitudes, and parameters of the Fourier decomposition of the I-band light curve of each object. We present density map of RR Ly…
The spatial distribution of sources populating different regions of the colour-magnitude diagram (I-J, I) extracted from the DENIS catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds (DCMC -- Cioni et al. 2000) reveal significantly different morphologies. Each region is associated to a different age group. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) shows an extended circular shape with a prominent, off center bar, a nucleus and irregular spiral arms. The Small Magellanic Cloud shows a perturbated structure with a prominent central concentration of stars. Old and young populations are offset from one another.
Thirty eight long-period (P>10 days), apparently contact binary stars discovered by the OGLE-II project in the SMC appear to be Beta Lyrae-type systems with ellipsoidal variations of the cool components dominating over eclipse effects in the systemic light variations and in the total luminosity. A new period-luminosity- color (PLC) relation has been established for these systems; we call it the PLC-beta relation, to distinguish it from the Cepheid relation. Two versions of the PLC-beta relation - based on the (B-V)0 or (V-I)0 color indices - have been calibrated for 33 systems with (V-I)0>0.25…
We present the list of potential multiple star clusters from the central part of the SMC. Presented systems were selected from the catalog of star clusters from the SMC. We find 23 suspected cluster pairs and 4 triple systems. The statistical analysis suggests that many of them may constitute physical systems. Size, equatorial coordinates and age of presented clusters are given. Age of clusters which form five pairs and one triple system is coeval suggesting common origin of these objects.
We present a catalogue of 12CO(J=1-0) and 13CO(J=1-0) molecular clouds in the spatio-velocity range of the Carina Flare supershell, GSH 287+04-17. The data cover a region of ~66 square degrees and were taken with the NANTEN 4m telescope, at spatial and velocity resolutions of 2.6' and 0.1 km/s. Decomposition of the emission results in the identification of 156 12CO clouds and 60 13CO clouds, for which we provide observational and physical parameters. Previous work suggests the majority of the detected mass forms part of a comoving molecular cloud complex that is physically associated with the …
The list of 127 eclipsing stars in optical coincidence with star clusters from the SMC is presented. It was prepared using the catalogs of eclipsing systems and star clusters from the SMC based on observations collected during the OGLE-II microlensing project. Location of 12 eclipsing stars in the color-magnitude diagram of clusters allows to exclude their membership. Photometric data of 73 systems support their membership. The remaining 42 objects were found in loose, faint clusters and therefore no conclusive statement about their membership can be made. All presented data are available from…
We present 100 multiple cluster candidates selected from the OGLE catalog of star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Statistical analysis shows that the significant fraction of these objects may constitute physical systems. Coeval ages of 102 components of multiple objects suggest their common origin. 53 components have very different ages. The comparison of the population of multiple clusters candidates from the SMC and the LMC shows that: a) distributions of sizes and ages of multiple and single clusters from the Magellanic Clouds are very similar, b) the difference of sizes of componen…
At low metallicity, B-type stars show lower loss of mass and, therefore, angular momentum so that it is expected that there are more Be stars in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Milky Way. However, till now, searches for Be stars were only performed in a very small number of open clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. Using the ESO/WFI in its slitless spectroscopic mode, we performed a Halpha survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Cloud. Eight million low-resolution spectra centered on Halpha were obtained. For their automatic analysis, we developed the ALBUM code. Here, we present the observat…
The distance to LMC and SMC is a subject of controversy, with the difference between the extreme values in distance moduli exceeding 0.5 mag. While currently the best calibrated method is based on red clump giants, and the near future improvement is most likely to come from detached eclipsing binaries, the ultimate goal is to have a purely geometrical determination. The best prospect will be to use relatively wide binary stars, for which spectroscopic orbits will be obtained with large ground based telescopes, and astrometric orbits will be obtained either with SIM, or with future ground based…
We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of new planetary nebulae (PNe) that were discovered in the Reid-Parker AAO/UKST H-alpha survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud. These serendipitous observations from various HST programs yield independent confirmations of 6 PNe; one other detected nebula may also be a PN, and one appears to be a region of diffuse emission. The high resolution HST archival images enable us to determine the physical sizes, the nebular morphology, and related features of these new PNe in detail for the first time. In a few cases we were also able to identify the centra…
Following an approach developed by Paczyński & Stanek, we derive a distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by comparing red clump stars from the Hipparcos catalog with the red clump stars observed in two fields in the LMC that were selected from the ongoing photometric survey of the Magellanic Clouds to lie in low extinction regions. The use of red clump stars allows a single step determination of the distance modulus to the LMC, $μ_{0,LMC} = 18.065\pm 0.031\pm 0.09 $mag (statistical plus systematic error), and the corresponding distance, $R_{LMC}= 41.02\pm 0.59\pm 1.74 kpc$. This measure…
We present a 8 deg x 6 deg, high resolution extinction map of the Pipe nebula using 4.5 million stars from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) point source catalog. The use of NICER, a robust and optimal technique to map the dust column density, allows us to detect a Av = 0.5 mag extinction at a 3-sigma level with a 1 arcmin resolution. We find for the Pipe nebula a normal reddening law, E(J-H) = (1.85 +/- 0.15) E(H-K). We measure the cloud distance using Hipparchos and Tycho parallaxes, and obtain ~130 pc. This, together with the total estimated mass, 10^4 Msun, makes the Pipe the closest m…
We present the first results from, and a complete description of, our ongoing UBVI digital photometric survey of the Magellanic Clouds. In particular, we discuss the photometric quality and automated reduction of a CCD survey (magnitude limits, completeness, and astrometric accuracy) that covers the central 8 by 8 degrees of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and 4 by 4 degrees of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We discuss photometry of over 1 million stars from the initial survey observations (an area northwest of the LMC bar covering 2 by 1.5 degrees) and present a deep stellar cluster catal…
We have obtained deep infrared $J$ and $K$ band observations of five fields located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) bar with the ESO New Technology Telescope equipped with the SOFI infrared camera. In our fields, 65 RR Lyrae stars catalogued by the OGLE collaboration were identified. Using different theoretical and empirical calibrations of the period-luminosity-metallicity relation, we find consistent LMC distance moduli values. Since the observed fields are situated very close to the center of the LMC, the correction for the tilt of the LMC bar with respect to the line of sight is neglig…
More than 50 years have elapsed since the first studies of star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The wealth of data accumulated since then has not only revealed a large cluster system, but also a diversified one, filling loci in the age, mass and chemical abundance parameter space which are complementary to Galactic clusters. Catalogs and photometric samples currently available cover most of the cluster mass range. The expectations of relatively long cluster disruption timescales in the Clouds have been confirmed, allowing reliable assessments of the cluster initial mass function and of the …
The LMC, SMC, and the Milky Way are a spectacular set of interacting galaxies. The prominent tidal arms which protrude from the Magellanic Clouds extend for tens of kiloparsecs and cover a large part of the southern sky. These arms, and the Magellanic Clouds themselves, are therefore a highly suitable subject for the detailed investigation of an interacting galaxy system. We present the first results of the Parkes narrow-band HI survey of the tidal arms of the Magellanic System. It is the first fully sampled, spatially complete survey of this system. The data provide information on the column …
We investigate the influence of blending on the Cepheid distance scale. Blending leads to systematically low distances to galaxies observed with HST, and therefore to systematically high estimates of the Hubble constant H_0. We select a sample of 43 long-period, large-amplitude Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud, from the catalog recently released by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. We then model the effects of blending, as observed by HST at large distances, by adding the V,I-bands contributions from nearby bright stars. We find that the derived distance modulus would be too …
We have detected 523 sources in a survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Wing with Chandra. By cross-correlating the X-ray data with optical and near-infrared catalogues we have found 300 matches. Using a technique that combines X-ray colours and X-ray to optical flux ratios we have been able to assign preliminary classifications to 265 of the objects. Our identifications include four pulsars, one high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) candidate, 34 stars and 185 active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In addition, we have classified 32 sources as 'hard' AGNs which are likely absorbed by local gas and dust,…
We made 22 observations on the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and covered full regions by the end of the ASCA mission. We detected 106 discrete sources with a criterion of S/N > 5 and performed systematic analyses on all of the sources. We determined the source positions with an ~40'' error radius (90% confidence) for sources detected in the central 20' radius of the GIS. We detected coherent pulsations from 17 sources. Among them, eight were newly discovered during this study. We classified most of these pulsars as X-ray binary pulsars (XBPs) based on their properties, such as the flux variabil…
Diffuse X-ray emission from the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) is studied by using all the archival data of pointed ROSAT Position Sensitive Proportional Counter (PSPC) observations. For this purpose, contributions from the point and point-like sources in the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) and PSPC source catalogues are eliminated and periods of high solar activity are excluded. The spectral analysis yielded characteristic temperatures of 10^6 - 10^7 K for the hot thin plasma of the ISM which extends over the whole Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The total unabs…
We present the initial results from the Spitzer Survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (S3MC), which imaged the star-forming body of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) in all seven MIPS and IRAC wavebands. We find that the F_8/F_24 ratio (an estimate of PAH abundance) has large spatial variations and takes a wide range of values that are unrelated to metallicity but anticorrelated with 24 um brightness and F_24/F_70 ratio. This suggests that photodestruction is primarily responsible for the low abundance of PAHs observed in star-forming low-metallicity galaxies. We use the S3MC images to compile a…
We use high-resolution {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} imaging observations of the young ($\sim 15-25$ Myr-old) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive an estimate for the binary fraction of F stars ($1.3 < M_\star/M_\odot < 1.6$). This study provides the strongest constraints yet on the binary fraction in a young star cluster in a low-metallicity environment (${[Fe/H]} \sim -0.4$ dex). Employing artificial-star tests, we develop a simple method that can efficiently measure the probabilities of stellar blends and superpositions from the observed stellar catalog. We create sy…
We present a precise determination of the apparent magnitude of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) in the I (0.8 micron), J (1.25 micron), and K_S (2.15 micron) bands from the luminosity function of a sample of data extracted from the DENIS catalogue towards the Magellanic Clouds (Cioni et al. 2000). From the J and Ks magnitudes we derive bolometric magnitudes m_bol. We present a new algorithm for the determination of the TRGB magnitude, which we describe in detail and test extensively using Monte-Carlo simulations. We note that any method that searches for a peak in the first derivative (…
A sample of carbon-rich stars (C-stars) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) was selected from the combined 2MASS and DENIS catalogues on the basis of their $J-K_s$ colour. This sample was extended to include confirmed C--stars from the Rebeirot et al. (1993) spectroscopic atlas. In this combined sample (N = 1152), a smaller number (N = 1079) were found to have MACHO observations. For this sub--sample, light curves were determined and 919 stars were found to have high quality light-curves with amplitudes of at least 0.05 mag. Of these stars, only 4% have a well--defined single period -- most of…
We report the discovery of 5 new Herbig Ae/Be candidate stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud in addition to the 2 reported in Beaulieu et al. (2001). We discuss these 7 HAeBe candidate stars in terms of (1) their irregular photometric variability, (2) their near infrared emission, (3) their Halpha emission and (4) their spectral type. One star has the typical photometric behaviour that is observed only among Pre-Main Sequence UX Orionis type stars. The objects are more luminous than Galactic HAeBe stars and Large Magellanic Cloud HAeBe candidates of the same spectral type. The stars were discov…
E(V$-$I) reddening values for 1123 locations in the bar region of the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented. V, I photometry of red clump stars identified in the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II catalogue of LMC were used to estimate reddening. E(V$-$I) values were estimated as the difference between observed and the characteristic values of (V$-$I) for the red clump population in a given region. It is found that most of the regions in the bar have reddening values less than 0.1 mag with only a few locations having values more than 0.2 mag. Eastern side of the bar is found to be more…
EROS 2 (Experience de Recherche d'Objets Sombres) conducted a survey of the SMC between July 1996 and February 2003 in two EROS broad-band colours, V_E and R_E. The photometric data of 4.2 million stars have been searched for behaviour typical of R Coronae Borealis (RCB) candidates such as drastic changes in magnitude. Five objects have been found, four of them being catalogued in the Simbad database as RAW 21, RAW 233, RAW 476, and [MH95] 431 with confirmed carbon-rich atmospheres, characteristic of RCB. From the EROS 2 light curve of RAW 21 and its spectrum reported by Morgan et al. (2003), …
We present a radio survey of X-ray sources in the Large and Small Magellanic clouds with the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 6.3 and 3.5 cm. Specifically, we have observed the fields of five LMC and two SMC supersoft X-ray sources, the X-ray binaries LMC X-1, X-2, X-3 & X-4, the X-ray transient Nova SMC 1992, and the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 0525-66. None of the targets are detected as point sources at their catalogued positions. In particular, the proposed supersoft jet source RXJ 0513-69 is not detected, placing constraints on its radio luminosity compared to Galactic jet sources. Li…
We are performing a uniform and unbiased, ~7x7 degrees imaging survey of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using the IRAC and MIPS instruments on board the Spitzer Space Telescope in order to survey the agents of a galaxy's evolution (SAGE), the interstellar medium (ISM) and stars in the LMC. The detection of diffuse ISM with column densities >1.2x10^21 H cm^-2 permits detailed studies of dust processes in the ISM. SAGE's point source sensitivity enables a complete census of newly formed stars with masses >3 solar masses that will determine the current star formation rate in the LMC. SAGE's de…
