Safe autonomous navigation requires not only geometric obstacle avoidance but also semantic awareness. Different object categories demand different safety clearances, and the set of relevant categories may expand as the robot explores novel environments. Vision-language models (VLMs) offer rich semantic representations for building maps of unknown scenes, yet their confidence scores are poorly calibrated, making raw predictions unreliable for safety-critical planning. Conformal prediction (CP) can provide coverage guarantees, but existing methods assume a fixed label set and stationary data, limiting their use in open-world settings. We propose Conformal Semantic Mapping for Open-World Safe Robot Navigation (CoSMO), a semantic safety mapping framework that transforms VLM embeddings into calibrated coverage sets and safety-aware obstacle dilations over a dynamically expanding hazard vocabulary, even under distribution shift. Experiments on the Matterport3D (MP3D) dataset show that CoSMO reduces semantic collisions by 61.6% relative to a geometry-only baseline, while maintaining formal coverage guarantees even under delayed expert feedback. Real-world experiments on a quadruped robot further demonstrate generalization by achieving long-run empirical coverage of 90.73% against the 90% target. As drones and autonomous cars become more widespread it is becoming increasingly important that robots can operate safely under realistic conditions. The noisy information fed into real systems means that robots must use estimates of the environment to plan navigation. Efficiently guaranteeing that the resulting motion plans are safe under these circumstances has proved difficult. We examine how to guarantee that a trajectory or policy is safe with only imperfect observations of the environment. We examine the implications of various mathematical formalisms of safety and arrive at a mathematic…

Safety is of great importance in multi-robot navigation problems. In this paper, we propose a control barrier function (CBF) based optimizer that ensures robot safety with both high probability and flexibility, using only sensor measurement. The optimizer takes action commands from the policy network as initial values and then provides refinement to drive the potentially dangerous ones back into safe regions. With the help of a deep transition model that predicts the evolution of surrounding dynamics and the consequences of different actions, the CBF module can guide the optimization in a reas…

We present an algorithm for safe robot navigation in complex dynamic environments using a variant of model predictive equilibrium point control. We use an optimization formulation to navigate robots gracefully in dynamic environments by optimizing over a trajectory cost function at each timestep. We present a novel trajectory cost formulation that significantly reduces the conservative and deadlock behaviors and generates smooth trajectories. In particular, we propose a new collision probability function that effectively captures the risk associated with a given configuration and the time to a…
To achieve successful field autonomy, mobile robots need to freely adapt to changes in their environment. Visual navigation systems such as Visual Teach and Repeat (VT&R) often assume the space around the reference trajectory is free, but if the environment is obstructed path tracking can fail or the robot could collide with a previously unseen obstacle. In this work, we present a locally reactive controller for a VT&R system that allows a robot to navigate safely despite physical changes to the environment. Our controller uses a local elevation map to compute vector representations and output…

Navigation in natural outdoor environments requires a robust and reliable traversability classification method to handle the plethora of situations a robot can encounter. Binary classification algorithms perform well in their native domain but tend to provide overconfident predictions when presented with out-of-distribution samples, which can lead to catastrophic failure when navigating unknown environments. We propose to overcome this issue by using anomaly detection on multi-modal images for traversability classification, which is easily scalable by training in a self-supervised fashion from…
This paper considers the problem of safe autonomous navigation in unknown environments, relying on local obstacle sensing. We consider a control-affine nonlinear robot system subject to bounded input noise and rely on feedback linearization to determine ellipsoid output bounds on the closed-loop robot trajectory under stabilizing control. A virtual governor system is developed to adaptively track a desired navigation path, while relying on the robot trajectory bounds to slow down if safety is endangered and speed up otherwise. The main contribution is the derivation of theoretical guarantees f…

This work presents a deep reinforcement learning framework for interactive navigation in a crowded place. Our proposed approach, Learning to Balance (L2B) framework enables mobile robot agents to steer safely towards their destinations by avoiding collisions with a crowd, while actively clearing a path by asking nearby pedestrians to make room, if necessary, to keep their travel efficient. We observe that the safety and efficiency requirements in crowd-aware navigation have a trade-off in the presence of social dilemmas between the agent and the crowd. On the one hand, intervening in pedestria…
Model-free Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) controllers have demonstrated promising results on various challenging non-linear control tasks. While a model-free DRL algorithm can solve unknown dynamics and high-dimensional problems, it lacks safety assurance. Although safety constraints can be encoded as part of a reward function, there still exists a large gap between an RL controller trained with this modified reward and a safe controller. In contrast, instead of implicitly encoding safety constraints with rewards, we explicitly co-learn a Twin Neural Lyapunov Function (TNLF) with the contro…

The primary objective of a safe navigation algorithm is to guide the object from its current position to the target position while avoiding any collision with the en-route obstacles, and the appropriate obstacle avoidance strategies are the key factors to ensure safe navigation tasks in dynamic environments. In this report, three different obstacle avoidance strategies for safe navigation in dynamic environments have been presented. The biologically-inspired navigation algorithm (BINA) is efficient in terms of avoidance time. The equidistant based navigation algorithm (ENA) is able to achieve …
Safe autonomous navigation in unknown environments is an important problem for mobile robots. This paper proposes techniques to learn the dynamics model of a mobile robot from trajectory data and synthesize a tracking controller with safety and stability guarantees. The state of a rigid-body robot usually contains its position, orientation, and generalized velocity and satisfies Hamilton's equations of motion. Instead of a hand-derived dynamics model, we use a dataset of state-control trajectories to train a translation-equivariant nonlinear Hamiltonian model represented as a neural ordinary d…

For autonomous quadruped robot navigation in various complex environments, a typical SOTA system is composed of four main modules -- mapper, global planner, local planner, and command-tracking controller -- in a hierarchical manner. In this paper, we build a robust and safe local planner which is designed to generate a velocity plan to track a coarsely planned path from the global planner. Previous works used waypoint-based methods (e.g. Proportional-Differential control and pure pursuit) which simplify the path tracking problem to local point-goal navigation. However, they suffer from frequen…
Stability and safety are critical properties for successful deployment of automatic control systems. As a motivating example, consider autonomous mobile robot navigation in a complex environment. A control design that generalizes to different operational conditions requires a model of the system dynamics, robustness to modeling errors, and satisfaction of safety \NEWZL{constraints}, such as collision avoidance. This paper develops a neural ordinary differential equation network to learn the dynamics of a Hamiltonian system from trajectory data. The learned Hamiltonian model is used to synthesi…
