One-shot personalization of autoregressive (AR) text-to-speech (TTS) models remains challenging because supervised fine-tuning (SFT) on a single reference pair rapidly degrades generation quality. We identify fixed, off-policy supervision as a key cause of failure in one-shot SFT for AR TTS, leading to blank or near-empty outputs at inference. Diversifying the training data with zero-shot pseudo-pairs eliminates this failure but yields little improvement in speaker similarity and increases word error rate because the targets remain fixed and teacher-forced. We therefore propose two on-policy approaches for one-shot speaker personalization: Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) with a speaker-similarity reward and On-Policy Self-Distillation (OPSD) with soft supervision from a reference-conditioned teacher. Both on-policy methods improve speaker similarity while preserving intelligibility, with different trade-offs: GRPO achieves the strongest overall performance, whereas OPSD enables substantially faster adaptation without external reward evaluation. Further analysis confirms that these gains stem from on-policy supervision rather than target diversity, establishing on-policy training as an effective framework for one-shot AR TTS personalization.
In this paper, we study the disentanglement of speaker and language representations in non-autoregressive cross-lingual TTS models from various aspects. We propose a phoneme length regulator that solves the length mismatch problem between IPA input sequence and monolingual alignment results. Using the phoneme length regulator, we present a FastPitch-based cross-lingual model with IPA symbols as input representations. Our experiments show that language-independent input representations (e.g. IPA symbols), an increasing number of training speakers, and explicit modeling of speech variance inform…
This paper proposes a novel voice conversion (VC) method based on non-autoregressive sequence-to-sequence (NAR-S2S) models. Inspired by the great success of NAR-S2S models such as FastSpeech in text-to-speech (TTS), we extend the FastSpeech2 model for the VC problem. We introduce the convolution-augmented Transformer (Conformer) instead of the Transformer, making it possible to capture both local and global context information from the input sequence. Furthermore, we extend variance predictors to variance converters to explicitly convert the source speaker's prosody components such as pitch an…
Adapting generic speech recognition models to specific individuals is a challenging problem due to the scarcity of personalized data. Recent works have proposed boosting the amount of training data using personalized text-to-speech synthesis. Here, we ask two fundamental questions about this strategy: when is synthetic data effective for personalization, and why is it effective in those cases? To address the first question, we adapt a state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition (ASR) model to target speakers from four benchmark datasets representative of different speaker types. We show that…
Whilst recent neural text-to-speech (TTS) approaches produce high-quality speech, they typically require a large amount of recordings from the target speaker. In previous work, a 3-step method was proposed to generate high-quality TTS while greatly reducing the amount of data required for training. However, we have observed a ceiling effect in the level of naturalness achievable for highly expressive voices when using this approach. In this paper, we present a method for building highly expressive TTS voices with as little as 15 minutes of speech data from the target speaker. Compared to the c…
This paper presents Articulatory-WaveNet, a new approach for acoustic-to-articulator inversion. The proposed system uses the WaveNet speech synthesis architecture, with dilated causal convolutional layers using previous values of the predicted articulatory trajectories conditioned on acoustic features. The system was trained and evaluated on the ElectroMagnetic Articulography corpus of Mandarin Accented English (EMA-MAE),consisting of 39 speakers including both native English speakers and native Mandarin speakers speaking English. Results show significant improvement in both correlation and RM…
On account of growing demands for personalization, the need for a so-called few-shot TTS system that clones speakers with only a few data is emerging. To address this issue, we propose Attentron, a few-shot TTS model that clones voices of speakers unseen during training. It introduces two special encoders, each serving different purposes. A fine-grained encoder extracts variable-length style information via an attention mechanism, and a coarse-grained encoder greatly stabilizes the speech synthesis, circumventing unintelligible gibberish even for synthesizing speech of unseen speakers. In addi…

This paper introduces Parallel Tacotron 2, a non-autoregressive neural text-to-speech model with a fully differentiable duration model which does not require supervised duration signals. The duration model is based on a novel attention mechanism and an iterative reconstruction loss based on Soft Dynamic Time Warping, this model can learn token-frame alignments as well as token durations automatically. Experimental results show that Parallel Tacotron 2 outperforms baselines in subjective naturalness in several diverse multi speaker evaluations. Its duration control capability is also demonstrat…
Recent advances in neural multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) models have enabled the generation of reasonably good speech quality with a single model and made it possible to synthesize the speech of a speaker with limited training data. Fine-tuning to the target speaker data with the multi-speaker model can achieve better quality, however, there still exists a gap compared to the real speech sample and the model depends on the speaker. In this work, we propose GANSpeech, which is a high-fidelity multi-speaker TTS model that adopts the adversarial training method to a non-autoregressive multi-s…
This paper proposes speaker-adaptive neural vocoders for parametric text-to-speech (TTS) systems. Recently proposed WaveNet-based neural vocoding systems successfully generate a time sequence of speech signal with an autoregressive framework. However, it remains a challenge to synthesize high-quality speech when the amount of a target speaker's training data is insufficient. To generate more natural speech signals with the constraint of limited training data, we propose a speaker adaptation task with an effective variation of neural vocoding models. In the proposed method, a speaker-independen…

End-to-end neural TTS has shown improved performance in speech style transfer. However, the improvement is still limited by the available training data in both target styles and speakers. Additionally, degenerated performance is observed when the trained TTS tries to transfer the speech to a target style from a new speaker with an unknown, arbitrary style. In this paper, we propose a new approach to seen and unseen style transfer training on disjoint, multi-style datasets, i.e., datasets of different styles are recorded, one individual style by one speaker in multiple utterances. An inverse au…

Building cross-lingual voice conversion (VC) systems for multiple speakers and multiple languages has been a challenging task for a long time. This paper describes a parallel non-autoregressive network to achieve bilingual and code-switched voice conversion for multiple speakers when there are only mono-lingual corpora for each language. We achieve cross-lingual VC between Mandarin speech with multiple speakers and English speech with multiple speakers by applying bilingual bottleneck features. To boost voice cloning performance, we use an adversarial speaker classifier with a gradient reversa…
Automatic speech recognition (ASR) needs to be robust to speaker differences. Voice Conversion (VC) modifies speaker characteristics of input speech. This is an attractive feature for ASR data augmentation. In this paper, we demonstrate that voice conversion can be used as a data augmentation technique to improve ASR performance, even on LibriSpeech, which contains 2,456 speakers. For ASR augmentation, it is necessary that the VC model be robust to a wide range of input speech. This motivates the use of a non-autoregressive, non-parallel VC model, and the use of a pretrained ASR encoder within…
This paper presents a method for phoneme-level prosody control of F0 and duration on a multispeaker text-to-speech setup, which is based on prosodic clustering. An autoregressive attention-based model is used, incorporating multispeaker architecture modules in parallel to a prosody encoder. Several improvements over the basic single-speaker method are proposed that increase the prosodic control range and coverage. More specifically we employ data augmentation, F0 normalization, balanced clustering for duration, and speaker-independent prosodic clustering. These modifications enable fine-graine…
We consider the task of personalizing ASR models while being constrained by a fixed budget on recording speaker-specific utterances. Given a speaker and an ASR model, we propose a method of identifying sentences for which the speaker's utterances are likely to be harder for the given ASR model to recognize. We assume a tiny amount of speaker-specific data to learn phoneme-level error models which help us select such sentences. We show that speaker's utterances on the sentences selected using our error model indeed have larger error rates when compared to speaker's utterances on randomly select…
Chinese dialects are different variations of Chinese and can be considered as different languages in the same language family with Mandarin. Though they all use Chinese characters, the pronunciations, grammar and idioms can vary significantly, and even local speakers may find it hard to input correct written forms of dialect. Besides, using Mandarin text as text-to-speech inputs would generate speech with poor naturalness. In this paper, we propose a novel Chinese dialect TTS frontend with a translation module, which converts Mandarin text into dialectic expressions to improve the intelligibil…

Recent advances in neural autoregressive models have improve the performance of speech synthesis (SS). However, as they lack the ability to model global characteristics of speech (such as speaker individualities or speaking styles), particularly when these characteristics have not been labeled, making neural autoregressive SS systems more expressive is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose to combine VoiceLoop, an autoregressive SS model, with Variational Autoencoder (VAE). This approach, unlike traditional autoregressive SS systems, uses VAE to model the global characteristics explic…
In this paper we propose Flowtron: an autoregressive flow-based generative network for text-to-speech synthesis with control over speech variation and style transfer. Flowtron borrows insights from IAF and revamps Tacotron in order to provide high-quality and expressive mel-spectrogram synthesis. Flowtron is optimized by maximizing the likelihood of the training data, which makes training simple and stable. Flowtron learns an invertible mapping of data to a latent space that can be manipulated to control many aspects of speech synthesis (pitch, tone, speech rate, cadence, accent). Our mean opi…
Several recent work on speech synthesis have employed generative adversarial networks (GANs) to produce raw waveforms. Although such methods improve the sampling efficiency and memory usage, their sample quality has not yet reached that of autoregressive and flow-based generative models. In this work, we propose HiFi-GAN, which achieves both efficient and high-fidelity speech synthesis. As speech audio consists of sinusoidal signals with various periods, we demonstrate that modeling periodic patterns of an audio is crucial for enhancing sample quality. A subjective human evaluation (mean opini…

With the advances in deep learning, speech enhancement systems benefited from large neural network architectures and achieved state-of-the-art quality. However, speaker-agnostic methods are not always desirable, both in terms of quality and their complexity, when they are to be used in a resource-constrained environment. One promising way is personalized speech enhancement (PSE), which is a smaller and easier speech enhancement problem for small models to solve, because it focuses on a particular test-time user. To achieve the personalization goal, while dealing with the typical lack of person…
Non-autoregressive (NAR) models have achieved a large inference computation reduction and comparable results with autoregressive (AR) models on various sequence to sequence tasks. However, there has been limited research aiming to explore the NAR approaches on sequence to multi-sequence problems, like multi-speaker automatic speech recognition (ASR). In this study, we extend our proposed conditional chain model to NAR multi-speaker ASR. Specifically, the output of each speaker is inferred one-by-one using both the input mixture speech and previously-estimated conditional speaker features. In e…
With recent advancements in voice cloning, the performance of speech synthesis for a target speaker has been rendered similar to the human level. However, autoregressive voice cloning systems still suffer from text alignment failures, resulting in an inability to synthesize long sentences. In this work, we propose a variant of attention-based text-to-speech system that can reproduce a target voice from a few seconds of reference speech and generalize to very long utterances as well. The proposed system is based on three independently trained components: a speaker encoder, synthesizer and unive…

In this paper, we present a novel modeling method for single-channel multi-talker overlapped automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems. Fully neural network based end-to-end models have dramatically improved the performance of multi-taker overlapped ASR tasks. One promising approach for end-to-end modeling is autoregressive modeling with serialized output training in which transcriptions of multiple speakers are recursively generated one after another. This enables us to naturally capture relationships between speakers. However, the conventional modeling method cannot explicitly take into acc…

In this paper, we present a novel method for phoneme-level prosody control of F0 and duration using intuitive discrete labels. We propose an unsupervised prosodic clustering process which is used to discretize phoneme-level F0 and duration features from a multispeaker speech dataset. These features are fed as an input sequence of prosodic labels to a prosody encoder module which augments an autoregressive attention-based text-to-speech model. We utilize various methods in order to improve prosodic control range and coverage, such as augmentation, F0 normalization, balanced clustering for durat…

Modelling prosody variation is critical for synthesizing natural and expressive speech in end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) systems. In this paper, a cross-utterance conditional VAE (CUC-VAE) is proposed to estimate a posterior probability distribution of the latent prosody features for each phoneme by conditioning on acoustic features, speaker information, and text features obtained from both past and future sentences. At inference time, instead of the standard Gaussian distribution used by VAE, CUC-VAE allows sampling from an utterance-specific prior distribution conditioned on cross-utterance…
