We study sampling from $π(x)\propto\mathrm{e}^{-V(x)}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$, where $V$ is $α$-strongly convex and $β$-smooth with condition number $κ=β/α$. For this problem, the proximal sampler preserves the target exactly and recovers overdamped Langevin dynamics in the small-step limit, but its Gaussian resampling step discards directional information. Underdamped Langevin dynamics retains such information through momentum to accelerate exploration, motivating a proximal construction that combines target preservation with directional persistence. We introduce \textit{reflected proximal dynamics}, which combines proximal sampling with an exact reflection of the auxiliary variable, conditional kinetic motion, and controlled refreshment. We develop two realizations: a flux-resampled underdamped half-turn and a persistent-momentum quarter-turn. From a warm start with constant $χ^2$ divergence, both methods achieve total variation error $\varepsilon$ using $\widetilde O(\sqrtκd^{1/4})$ expected oracle queries. We further remove the supplied warm-start assumption by combining either sampler with existing posterior samplers in a proximal initialization stage with an optimized coarse step size. Accounting for both initialization and sampling yields $\widetilde O(κ^{6/7}d^{1/4})$ expected oracle queries. In both regimes, the dependence on the target accuracy $\varepsilon$ is $\mathrm{polylog}(1/\varepsilon)$, making reflected proximal dynamics a promising framework for accelerated high-accuracy log-concave sampling.

In this paper, we focus on solving a class of constrained non-convex non-concave saddle point problems in a decentralized manner by a group of nodes in a network. Specifically, we assume that each node has access to a summand of a global objective function and nodes are allowed to exchange information only with their neighboring nodes. We propose a decentralized variant of the proximal point method for solving this problem. We show that when the objective function is $ρ$-weakly convex-weakly concave the iterates converge to approximate stationarity with a rate of $\mathcal{O}(1/\sqrt{T})$ wher…

We propose a new algorithm---Stochastic Proximal Langevin Algorithm (SPLA)---for sampling from a log concave distribution. Our method is a generalization of the Langevin algorithm to potentials expressed as the sum of one stochastic smooth term and multiple stochastic nonsmooth terms. In each iteration, our splitting technique only requires access to a stochastic gradient of the smooth term and a stochastic proximal operator for each of the nonsmooth terms. We establish nonasymptotic sublinear and linear convergence rates under convexity and strong convexity of the smooth term, respectively, e…

In this paper, we revisit the smooth and strongly-convex-strongly-concave minimax optimization problem. Zhang et al. (2021) and Ibrahim et al. (2020) established the lower bound $Ω\left(\sqrt{κ_xκ_y} \log \frac{1}ε\right)$ on the number of gradient evaluations required to find an $ε$-accurate solution, where $κ_x$ and $κ_y$ are condition numbers for the strong convexity and strong concavity assumptions. However, the existing state-of-the-art methods do not match this lower bound: algorithms of Lin et al. (2020) and Wang and Li (2020) have gradient evaluation complexity $\mathcal{O}\left( \sqrt…
We study sampling problems associated with non-convex potentials that meanwhile lack smoothness. In particular, we consider target distributions that satisfy either logarithmic-Sobolev inequality or Poincaré inequality. Rather than smooth, the potentials are assumed to be semi-smooth or the summation of multiple semi-smooth functions. We develop a sampling algorithm that resembles proximal algorithms in optimization for this challenging sampling task. Our algorithm is based on a special case of Gibbs sampling known as the alternating sampling framework (ASF). The key contribution of this work …

The accelerated proximal point algorithm (APPA), also known as "Catalyst", is a well-established reduction from convex optimization to approximate proximal point computation (i.e., regularized minimization). This reduction is conceptually elegant and yields strong convergence rate guarantees. However, these rates feature an extraneous logarithmic term arising from the need to compute each proximal point to high accuracy. In this work, we propose a novel Relaxed Error Criterion for Accelerated Proximal Point (RECAPP) that eliminates the need for high accuracy subproblem solutions. We apply RECA…

Much recent research effort has been directed to the development of efficient algorithms for solving minimax problems with theoretical convergence guarantees due to the relevance of these problems to a few emergent applications. In this paper, we propose a unified single-loop alternating gradient projection (AGP) algorithm for solving smooth nonconvex-(strongly) concave and (strongly) convex-nonconcave minimax problems. AGP employs simple gradient projection steps for updating the primal and dual variables alternatively at each iteration. We show that it can find an $\varepsilon$-stationary po…

We consider the task of sampling with respect to a log concave probability distribution. The potential of the target distribution is assumed to be composite, \textit{i.e.}, written as the sum of a smooth convex term, and a nonsmooth convex term possibly taking infinite values. The target distribution can be seen as a minimizer of the Kullback-Leibler divergence defined on the Wasserstein space (\textit{i.e.}, the space of probability measures). In the first part of this paper, we establish a strong duality result for this minimization problem. In the second part of this paper, we use the duali…
Understanding the complexity of sampling from a strongly log-concave and log-smooth distribution $π$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ to high accuracy is a fundamental problem, both from a practical and theoretical standpoint. In practice, high-accuracy samplers such as the classical Metropolis-adjusted Langevin algorithm (MALA) remain the de facto gold standard; and in theory, via the proximal sampler reduction, it is understood that such samplers are key for sampling even beyond log-concavity (in particular, for distributions satisfying isoperimetric assumptions). In this work, we improve the dimension dep…
