Using a recently-introduced quantum control model for Unruh-DeWitt detectors in superpositions of classical trajectories, we investigate the response of a detector interacting with a massless scalar quantum field in (3+1) dimensions along a superposition of circular trajectories. We present numerical results for the transition probability and effective temperature of such a detector in four distinct geometric scenarios: (a) concentric, vertically-stacked trajectories, (b) planar, horizontally-displaced trajectories, (c) static central point and surrounding circular trajectory, and (d) concentric, planar circular trajectories. For Gaussian switching functions that are much broader than the acceleration timescale, in case (a) we find only minor deviations from the well-known, effectively thermal response of a single circular trajectory, whereas in case (c) we find a significant reduction in the effective temperature and greater variation with energy gap. We conclude with a discussion of a potential analogue implementation in ultracold atom systems.
Unruh-deWitt detectors have been utilised widely as probes for quantum particles, entanglement and spacetime curvature. Here, we extend the standard treatment of an Unruh-deWitt detector interacting with a massless, scalar field to include the detector travelling in a quantum superposition of classical trajectories. We derive perturbative expressions for the final state of the detector, and show that it depends on field correlation functions evaluated locally along the individual trajectories, as well as non-locally between the superposed trajectories. By applying our general approach to a det…
We propose a test for the circular Unruh effect using certain atoms - fluorine and oxygen. For these atoms the centripetal acceleration of the outer shell electrons implies an effective Unruh temperature in the range 1000 - 2000 K. This range of Unruh temperatures is large enough to shift the expected occupancy of the lowest energy level and nearby energy levels. In effect the Unruh temperature changes the expected pure ground state, with all the electrons in the lowest energy level, to a mixed state with some larger than expected occupancy of states near to the lowest energy level. Examining …
In this paper, we consider the decoherence patterns of a topological qubit made of two Majorana zero modes in the generic linear and circular motions in the Minkowski spacetime. We show that the reduced dynamics is exact without Markov approximation. Our results imply that the acceleration will cause thermalization as expected by Unruh effect. However, for the short-time scale, we find the rate of decoherence is anti-correlated with the acceleration, as kind of decoherence impedance. This is in fact related to the "anti-Unruh" phenomenon previously found by studying the transition probability …
Particle detector models such as the Unruh-deWitt detector are widely used in relativistic quantum information and field theory to probe the global features of spacetime and quantum fields. These detectors are typically modelled as coupling locally to the field along a classical worldline. In this paper, we utilize a recent framework which enables us to prepare the detector in a quantum-controlled superposition of trajectories, and study its response to the field in finite-temperature Minkowski spacetime and an expanding de Sitter universe. Unlike a detector on a classical path which cannot di…
We consider an entanglement harvesting protocol between two Unruh-deWitt detectors in quantum superpositions of static trajectories in the static de Sitter and thermal Minkowski spacetimes. We demonstrate for the first time that the spatial superposition of each detector's path allows entanglement to be harvested from the quantum field in regimes where it would be otherwise impossible for detectors on classical trajectories. Surprisingly, for detectors on sufficiently delocalised trajectories in a thermal bath, the amount of harvested entanglement grows with the temperature of the field, viola…
We present novel methods to numerically address the problem of characterizing the response of particle detectors in curved spacetimes. These methods allow for the integration of the Wightman function, at least in principle, in rather general backgrounds. In particular we will use this tool to further understand the nature of conformal massless scalar Hawking radiation from a Schwarzschild black hole in anti-de Sitter space. We do that by studying an Unruh-DeWitt detector at rest above the horizon and in circular geodesic orbit. The method allows us to see that the response rate shows peaks at …
We examine the response of an Unruh-DeWitt particle detector coupled to a massless scalar field on the (3+1)-dimensional Schwarzschild spacetime, in the Boulware, Hartle-Hawking and Unruh states, for static detectors and detectors on circular geodesics, by primarily numerical methods. For the static detector, the response in the Hartle-Hawking state exhibits the known thermality at the local Hawking temperature, and the response in the Unruh state is thermal at the local Hawking temperature in the limit of a large detector energy gap. For the circular-geodesic detector, we find evidence of the…
We study the properties of the transition probability and entanglement harvesting phenomenon for circularly accelerated detectors locally interacting with massless scalar fields. The dependence of the transition probability on the parameters associated with the circular motion is first analyzed in detail. By a cross-comparison with the situation of the uniformly accelerated motion, we obtain that the transition probability and the possible thermalization behavior for detectors rotating with an extremely large circular radius are analogous to that for uniformly accelerated detectors, but for a …

We discuss some common misconceptions in Unruh effect and Unruh radiation for the cases of linear and circular uniform acceleration of a charged particle or detector moving in a quantum field. We point to the need to go beyond Unruh effect and develop a new theoretical framework for treating the stochastic dynamics of particles interacting with quantum fields under more general nonequilibrium conditions. This framework has been established in recent years using the influence functional formalism and applied to relativistically moving charged particles. Only with nonequilibrium concepts and met…
The Unruh effect refers to the thermal fluctuations a detector experiences while undergoing linear motion with uniform acceleration in a Minkowski vacuum. This thermality can be demonstrated by tracing the vacuum state of the field over the modes beyond the accelerated detector's event horizon. However, the event horizon is well-defined only if the detector moves with eternal uniform linear acceleration. This idealized condition cannot be fulfilled in realistic situations when the motion unavoidably involves periods of non-uniform acceleration. Many experimental proposals to test the Unruh eff…
We propose and study methods for detecting the Unruh effect in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The Bogoliubov vacuum of a Bose-Einstein condensate is used here to simulate a scalar field-theory, and accelerated atom dots or optical lattices as means for detecting phonon radiation due to acceleration effects. We study Unruh's effect for linear acceleration and circular acceleration. In particular, we study the dispersive effects of the Bogoliubov spectrum on the ideal case of exact thermalization. Our results suggest that Unruh's acceleration radiation can be tested using current accessible experim…
The Unruh effect states an accelerated particle detector registers a thermal response when moving through the Minkowski vacuum, and its thermal feature is believed to be inseparable from Lorentz symmetry: Without the latter, the former disappears. Here we propose to observe analogue circular Unruh effect using an impurity atom in a quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dominant dipole-dipole interactions between atoms or molecules in the ultracold gas. Quantum fluctuations in the condensate possess a Bogoliubov spectrum $ω_{\mathbf k}=c_0|{\mathbf k}|f(\hbar\,c_0|{\mathbf k…
We study the spontaneous de-excitation and excitation of accelerated atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories (``generalized Unruh effect''). We consider the effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction separately. We show that radiation reaction is generally not altered by stationary acceleration, whereas the contribution of vacuum fluctuations differs for all stationary accelerated trajectories from its inertial value. Spontaneous excitation from the ground state occurs for all { accelerated stationary} trajectories and is therefore the ``normal case''. We furthermore show that th…
We study the detailed balance temperatures recorded along all classes of stationary, uniformly accelerated worldlines in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime, namely along (i) linear uniform acceleration, (ii) cusped, (iii) circular, (iv) catenary, and (v) helix worldlines, among which the Unruh temperature is the particular case for linear uniform acceleration. As a measuring device, we employ an Unruh-DeWitt detector, modeled as a qubit that interacts for a long time with a massless Klein-Gordon field in the vacuum state. The temperatures in each case (i) - (v) are functions of up to three i…
We study the quantum Fisher information (QFI) of acceleration, in the open quantum systems, for a two-level atom with the circular motion coupled to a massless scalar field in the Minkowski vacuum without and with a reflecting boundary in the ultra-relativistic limit. As we amplify $a$, the saturation time decreases for $θ\neqπ$, but first increases and then decreases for $θ=π$. Without a boundary, there exists a peak value of QFI with a certain time. The QFI varies with the initial state parameter $θ$, and firstly takes peak value in the ground state of the atom. The variation of QFI with res…
Within any anticipated unifying theory of quantum gravity, it should be meaningful to combine the fundamental notions of quantum superposition and spacetime to obtain so-called "spacetime superpositions": that is, quantum superpositions of different spacetimes not related by a global coordinate transformation. Here we consider the quantum-gravitational effects produced by superpositions of periodically identified Minkowski spacetime (i.e.\ Minkowski spacetime with a periodic boundary condition) with different characteristic lengths. By coupling relativistic quantum matter to fields on such a s…
Modeling an arbitrarily accelerating qubit as an open quantum system, we derive an exact solution for the pure-dephasing model ($σ_z$ coupling) under arbitrary qubit space-time trajectories, as well as general expressions for the survival probabilities of finite-length qubits interacting with a massless scalar field under $σ_x$ coupling (an Unruh-DeWitt detector) to second order. We follow the regularization scheme presented in a previous paper by S. Schlicht, to allow a finite length quantum detector to couple to the massless scalar field. We compute the decay rate of the qubit in different c…

Quantum gravity is expected to contain descriptions of semiclassical spacetime geometries in quantum superpositions. To date, no framework for modelling such superpositions has been devised. Here, we provide a new phenomenological description for the response of quantum probes (i.e. Unruh-deWitt detectors) on a spacetime manifold in quantum superposition. By introducing an additional control degree of freedom, one can assign a Hilbert space to the spacetime, allowing it to exist in a superposition of spatial or curvature states. Applying this approach to static de Sitter space, we discover sce…
The statistical properties of spectra of quantum systems within the framework of random matrix theory is widely used in many areas of physics. These properties are affected, if two or more sets of spectra are superposed, resulting from the discrete symmetries present in the system. Superposition of spectra of $m$ such circular orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles are studied numerically using higher-order spacing ratios. For given $m$ and the Dyson index $β$, the modified index $β'$ is tabulated whose nearest neighbor spacing distribution is identical to that of $k$-th order spacing ra…
