This article is devoted to the study of the evolution of the properties of nucleons bound in nuclear matter within the framework of the chiral confining model. The in-medium nucleon trial states (either localized factorized wave functions or momentum-projected states) are determined by imposing the von Laue stability condition, according to the formal results established in a preliminary companion paper (labeled as I).
The main results concern the response of the composite nucleon to the scalar field, as well as the respective roles of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in the evolution of the in-medium nucleon mass. This evolution governs the repulsive three-body forces required for the nuclear saturation mechanism. We also analyze the modification of the energy density distribution and the pressure distribution inside the in-medium nucleon. We also draw some perspectives concerning the mapping between bound nucleon properties and the equation of state of dense matter as realized in the deep interior of neutron stars.
Understanding of inclusive one-nucleon knockout reactions for long-lived fission fragments (LLFPs) is crucial for nuclear transmutation studies. However, the particle and heavy ion transport code system (PHITS) severely overshoots the inclusive one-nucleon knockout cross sections sigma_-1N. Therefore development of a reaction model for describing the inclusive one-nucleon knockout processes is necessary. A key is specification of the position and the momentum of a nucleon inside a nucleus to be struck by the incident nucleon. In this paper the semiclassical distorted wave model incorporating t…

We review and examine in detail recent developments regarding the question of the nucleon mass decomposition. We discuss in particular the virial theorem in quantum field theory and its implications for the nucleon mass decomposition and mechanical equilibrium. We reconsider the renormalization of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in minimal-subtraction-type schemes and the physical interpretation of its components, as well as the role played by the trace anomaly and Poincaré symmetry. We also study the concept of "quantum anomalous energy" proposed in some works as a new contribution to the nucl…
The nucleon's peripheral transverse charge and magnetization densities are computed in chiral effective field theory. The densities are represented in first-quantized form, as overlap integrals of chiral light-front wave functions describing the transition of the nucleon to soft pion-nucleon intermediate states. The orbital motion of the pion causes a large left-right asymmetry in a transversely polarized nucleon. The effect attests to the relativistic nature of chiral dynamics [pion momenta k = O(M_pi)] and could be observed in form factor measurements at low momentum transfer.
We study the impact of the description of the knockout nucleon wave function on electron- and neutrino-induced quasielastic and single-pion production cross sections. We work in a fully relativistic and quantum mechanical framework, where the relativistic mean-field model is used to describe the target nucleus. The focus is on Pauli blocking and the distortion of the final nucleon, these two nuclear effects are separated and analyzed in detail. We find that a proper quantum mechanical treatment of these effects is crucial to provide the correct magnitude and shape of the inclusive cross sectio…
Using dispersive representations of the nucleon gravitational form factors, the results for their absorptive parts from chiral effective field theory in curved space-time, and the mechanical stability conditions, we obtain a model independent inequality for the value of the gravitational $D(t)$ form factor at zero momentum transfer (Druck-term). In particular, the obtained inequality leads to a conservative bound on the Druck-term in the chiral limit $D \leq -0.95(9)$. This bound implies the restriction on the low-energy constant $c_8$ of the effective chiral action for nucleons and pions in t…
We study nuclear symmetry energy and the thermodynamic instabilities of asymmetric nuclear matter in a self-consistent manner by using a modified quark-meson coupling model where the confining interaction for quarks inside a nucleon is represented by a phenomenologically averaged potential in an equally mixed scalar-vector harmonic form. The nucleon-nucleon interaction in nuclear matter is then realized by introducing additional quark couplings to $σ$, $ω$, and $ρ$ mesons through mean-field approximations. We find an analytic expression for the symmetry energy ${\cal E}_{sym}$ as a function of…
We investigate how the gravitational form factors of the nucleon undergo changes in nuclear matter, emphasizing the Abel transformation from the three-dimensional (3D) Breit frame to the two-dimensional (2D) light-front frame. Since the gravitational form factors reveal the mechanical structure of the nucleon, we examine also the medium modifications of the energy-momentum, pressure, and shear-force distributions. We scrutinize the stabilities of the nucleon in nuclear matter. For this purpose, we employ the in-medium modified SU(2) Skyrme model to study these mechanical quantities of the nucl…
We have calculated the properties of nuclear matter in a self-consistent manner with quark-meson coupling mechanism incorporating structure of nucleons in vacuum through a relativistic potential model; where the dominant confining interaction for the free independent quarks inside a nucleon, is represented by a phenomenologically average potential in equally mixed scalar-vector harmonic form. Corrections due to spurious centre of mass motion as well as those due to other residual interactions such as the one gluon exchange at short distances and quark-pion coupling arising out of chiral symmet…
We investigate the possible thermodynamic instability in a warm and dense nuclear medium (T<50 MeV and ρ_0<ρ_B< 3ρ_0) where a phase transition from nucleonic matter to resonance-dominated Delta-matter can take place. The analysis is performed by requiring the global conservation of baryon and electric charge numbers in the framework of a relativistic equation of state. Similarly to the liquid-gas phase transition, we show that the nucleon-Delta matter phase transition is characterized by both mechanical instability (fluctuations on the baryon density) and by chemical-diffusive instability (flu…
We study the nucleon's partonic angular momentum (AM) content at peripheral transverse distances $b = \mathcal{O}(M_π^{-1})$, where the structure is governed by chiral dynamics. We compute the nucleon form factors of the energy-momentum tensor in chiral effective field theory (ChEFT) and construct the transverse densities of AM at fixed light-front time. In the periphery the spin density is suppressed, and the AM is predominantly orbital. In the first-quantized representation of ChEFT in light-front form, the field-theoretical AM density coincides with the quantum-mechanical orbital AM density…
We investigate the low-energy elastic DbarN interaction using a quark model that confines color and realizes dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. The model is defined by a microscopic Hamiltonian inspired in the QCD Hamiltonian in Coulomb gauge. Constituent quark masses are obtained by solving a gap equation and baryon and meson bound-state wave functions are obtained using a variational method. We derive a low energy meson-nucleon potential from a quark-interchange mechanism whose ingredients are the quark-quark and quark-antiquark interactions and baryon and meson wave functions, all derived …
We suggest an extension to isospin asymmetric matter of the quarkyonic model from McLerran and Reddy. This extension allows us to construct the $β$-equilibrium between quarks, nucleons and leptons. The concept of the quarkyonic matter originates from the large number of color limit for which nucleons are the correct degrees of freedom near the Fermi surface -- reflecting the confining forces -- while deep inside the Fermi sea quarks naturally appear. In isospin asymmetric matter, we suggest that this new concept can be implemented within a global isoscalar relation between the shell gaps diffe…

The exact treatment of nuclei starting from the constituent nucleons and the fundamental interactions among them has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. Above all nuclear scattering and reactions, which require the solution of the many-body quantum-mechanical problem in the continuum, represent an extraordinary theoretical as well as computational challenge for {\em ab initio} approaches. We present a new {\em ab initio} many-body approach which derives from the combination of the {\em ab initio} no-core shell model with the resonating-group method [4]. By complementing a microscopic…
A three-body semiclassical model is proposed to describe the nucleon transfer and emission reactions in a heavy-ion collision. In this model the two heavy particles, i.e. nuclear cores A$_1(Z_{A_1}, M_{A_1})$ and A$_2(Z_{A_2}, M_{A_2})$, move along classical trajectories $\vec R_1(t)$ and $\vec R_2(t)$ respectively, while the dynamics of the lighter neutron, n, is considered from a quantum mechanical point of view. Here, $M_i$ are the nucleon masses and $Z_i$ are the Coulomb charges of the heavy nuclei ($i=1,2$). A Faddeev-type semiclassical formulation using realistic paired nuclear-nuclear p…
We review some of the recent developments regarding mass, angular momentum and pressure forces inside hadrons. These properties are all encoded in the energy-momentum tensor of the system, which is described at the non-perturbative level in terms of gravitational form factors. Similarly to electromagnetic form factors, Fourier transforms of gravitational form factors allow one to map out the distribution of the above mechanical properties in position space, providing a whole new way of studying in detail the internal structure of hadrons.
In the light-front description of nucleon structure the electromagnetic form factors are expressed in terms of frame-independent transverse densities of charge and magnetization. Recent work has studied the transverse densities at peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}), where they are governed by universal chiral dynamics and can be computed in a model-independent manner. Of particular interest is the comparison of the peripheral charge and magnetization densities. We summarize (a) their interpretation as spin-independent and -dependent current matrix elements; (b) the leading-order chiral effe…
Transverse densities describe the spatial distribution of electromagnetic current in the nucleon at fixed light-front time. At peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}) the densities are governed by chiral dynamics and can be calculated model-independently using chiral effective field theory (EFT). Recent work has shown that the EFT results can be represented in first-quantized form, as overlap integrals of chiral light-front wave functions describing the transition of the nucleon to soft-pion-nucleon intermediate states, resulting in a quantum-mechanical picture of the peripheral transverse densi…
We present an overview of the evolution of ab initio methods for few-nucleon systems with A \ge 4, tracing the progress made that today allows precision calculations for these systems. First a succinct description of the diverse approaches is given. In order to identify analogies and differences the methods are grouped according to different formulations of the quantum mechanical many-body problem. Various significant applications from the past and present are described. We discuss the results with emphasis on the developments following the original implementations of the approaches. In partic…
The nucleon's electromagnetic form factors are expressed in terms of the transverse densities of charge and magnetization at fixed light-front time. At peripheral transverse distances $b = O(M_π^{-1})$ the densities are governed by chiral dynamics and can be calculated model-independently using chiral effective field theory (EFT). We represent the leading-order chiral EFT results for the peripheral transverse densities as overlap integrals of chiral light-front wave functions, describing the transition of the initial nucleon to soft pion-nucleon intermediate states and back. The description of nuclei starting from the constituent nucleons and the realistic interactions among them has been a long-standing goal in nuclear physics. In addition to the complex nature of the nuclear forces, with two-, three- and possibly higher many-nucleon components, one faces the quantum-mechanical many-nucleon problem governed by an interplay between bound and continuum states. In recent years, significant progress has been made in ab initio nuclear structure and reaction calculations based on input from QCD-employing Hamiltonians constructed within chiral effective field theory.
