Post-training compression is essential for deploying large language models (LLMs) under tight resource constraints. Tensor decompositions have emerged as a promising direction, offering compact parameterizations well suited to Transformer weight structures. However, existing studies evaluate these methods in narrow settings, leaving unclear whether tensorization is effective at large-scale deployment. We systematically evaluate tensor compression across dense and MoE architectures, establishing performance trade-offs grounded in both empirical analysis and theoretical analysis. We identify a fundamental mismatch between the shared subspaces assumed by tensor decompositions and the heterogeneous representations learned by modern LLMs, thereby delineating their practical limits and clarifying their viable role in large-scale deployment. The code is available at https://github.com/brain-lab-research/TT-LLM.

We consider the problem of model compression for deep neural networks (DNNs) in the challenging one-shot/post-training setting, in which we are given an accurate trained model, and must compress it without any retraining, based only on a small amount of calibration input data. This problem has become popular in view of the emerging software and hardware support for executing models compressed via pruning and/or quantization with speedup, and well-performing solutions have been proposed independently for both compression approaches. In this paper, we introduce a new compression framework which …

Despite the success of large language models (LLMs) in various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, the stored knowledge in these models may inevitably be incomplete, out-of-date, or incorrect. This motivates the need to utilize external knowledge to assist LLMs. Unfortunately, current methods for incorporating external knowledge often require additional training or fine-tuning, which can be costly and may not be feasible for LLMs. To address this issue, we propose a novel post-processing approach, rethinking with retrieval (RR), which retrieves relevant external knowledge based on the dec…

Model compression and acceleration are attracting increasing attentions due to the demand for embedded devices and mobile applications. Research on efficient convolutional neural networks (CNNs) aims at removing feature redundancy by decomposing or optimizing the convolutional calculation. In this work, feature redundancy is assumed to exist among channels in CNN architectures, which provides some leeway to boost calculation efficiency. Aiming at channel compression, a novel convolutional construction named compact convolution is proposed to embrace the progress in spatial convolution, channel…

Lossy compression algorithms are typically designed and analyzed through the lens of Shannon's rate-distortion theory, where the goal is to achieve the lowest possible distortion (e.g., low MSE or high SSIM) at any given bit rate. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly accepted that "low distortion" is not a synonym for "high perceptual quality", and in fact optimization of one often comes at the expense of the other. In light of this understanding, it is natural to seek for a generalization of rate-distortion theory which takes perceptual quality into account. In this paper, we …

Biologically inspired spiking neural networks (SNNs) are widely used to realize ultralow-power energy consumption. However, deep SNNs are not easy to train due to the excessive firing of spiking neurons in the hidden layers. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel but simple normalization technique called postsynaptic potential normalization. This normalization removes the subtraction term from the standard normalization and uses the second raw moment instead of the variance as the division term. The spike firing can be controlled, enabling the training to proceed appropriating, by conducti…
