Leptophilic sub-MeV spin-1 dark matter (DM) can be converted into a photon via inelastic scattering with a free electron or absorption by a neutral hydrogen atom in the primordial plasma. We study for the first time the impact of the energy injection resulting from such processes on cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. We obtain upper limits on the vector and axial-vector DM-electron couplings using Planck 2018 temperature, polarization, and lensing data for DM masses between 100 eV and 100 keV. We find that, due to the suppression of the hydrogen atomic form factor at high energies, inelastic scattering provides the dominant constraint for DM masses above the keV scale. At lower masses, hydrogen ionization through DM absorption is the leading channel, driven by the higher efficiency of post-recombination energy injection in modifying the free-electron fraction. Although the bounds we derive are considerably weaker than existing laboratory and astrophysical limits, they provide a robust and independent cosmological probe of leptophilic DM interactions.
It is shown that, in addition to the Thomson scattering, the absorption due to the electron-electron, electron-ion and the electron -atom collisions in a partially ionized cosmic plasma would also contribute to the optical depth of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The absorption depth depends on the plasma temperature and frequency of the CMB radiation. The absorption effects are prominent at the low frequency part of the CMB spectrum. These effects when included in the interpretation of the CMB spectrum may necessitate a revised view of the ioniziation of the universe.
We present a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC)-based parameter estimation package, CosmoReionMC, to jointly constrain cosmological parameters of the $Λ$CDM model and the astrophysical parameters related to hydrogen reionization. The package is based on a previously developed physically motivated semi-analytical model for reionization, a similar semi-analytical model for computing the global 21~cm signal during the cosmic dawn and using an appropriately modified version of the publicly available CAMB for computing the CMB anisotropies. These calculations are then coupled to an MCMC ensemble sampl…
We examine the results from the Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES), which has recently claimed the detection of a strong absorption in the 21 cm hyperfine transition line of neutral hydrogen, at redshifts demarcating the early stages of star formation. More concretely, we study the compatibility of the shape of the EDGES absorption profile, centered at a redshift of $z \sim 17.2$, with measurements of the reionization optical depth, the Gunn-Peterson optical depth, and Lyman-$α$ emission from star-forming galaxies, for a variety of possible reionization mod…
We study the cross correlation of damped Ly$α$ systems (DLAs) and their background quasars, using the most updated DLA catalog and the Planck 2018 CMB lensing convergence field. Our measurement suggests that the DLA bias $b_{\rm DLA}$ is smaller than $3.1$, corresponding to $\log(M/M_\odot h^{-1})\leq 12.3$ at a confidence of $90\%$. These constraints are broadly consistent with Alonso et al. (2018) and previous measurements by cross-correlation between DLAs and the Ly$α$ forest (e.g. Font-Ribera et al. 2012; Perez-Rafols et al. 2018). Further, our results demonstrate the potential of obtainin…

Motivated by the SU(2)$_{\rm CMB}$ modification of the cosmological model $Λ$CDM, we consider isolated fuzzy-dark-matter lumps, made of ultralight axion particles whose masses arise due to distinct SU(2) Yang-Mills scales and the Planck mass $M_P$. In contrast to SU(2)$_{\rm CMB}$, these Yang-Mills theories are in confining phases (zero temperature) throughout most of the Universe's history and associate with the three lepton flavours of the Standard Model of particle physics. As the Universe expands, axionic fuzzy dark matter comprises a three-component fluid which undergoes certain depercola…
Within the framework of a flat cosmological model a propagation of an instantaneous burst of isotropic radiation is considered from the moment of its beginning at some initial redshift z0 to the moment of its registration now (at z=0). Thomson scattering by free electrons and scattering in primordial hydrogen lines Ha, Hb, Pa and Pb are considered as the sources of opacity and when calculating an albedo of a single scattering in the lines we take into account deactivation of the upper levels of transitions by background blackbody radiation. Profiles for these lines in a burst spectrum are calc…
The unexpectedly strong 21cm absorption signal detected by the EDGES experiment suggests that the baryonic gas was colder at redshift $z\sim 17$ than predicted in the standard scenario. We discuss a mechanism to lower the baryon temperature after recombination. We introduce a stable, negatively-charged particle with a non-negligible cosmological abundance, such that the universe remains charge-neutral but the electron and proton numbers are no longer equal. The deficit of electrons during recombination results in an earlier decoupling of the baryon gas temperature from that of the CMB. This im…
We compute in detail the rate at which energy injected by dark matter annihilation heats and ionizes the photon-baryon plasma at z ~ 1000, and provide accurate fitting functions over the relevant redshift range for a broad array of annihilation channels and DM masses. The resulting perturbations to the ionization history can be constrained by measurements of the CMB temperature and polarization angular power spectra. We show that models which fit recently measured excesses in 10-1000 GeV electron and positron cosmic rays are already close to the 95% confidence limits from WMAP. The recently la…
Dark matter annihilation or de-excitation, decay of metastable species, or other new physics may inject energetic electrons and photons into the photon-baryon fluid during and after recombination. As such particles cool, they partition their energy into a large number of efficiently ionizing electrons and photons, which in turn modify the ionization history. Recent work has provided a simple method for constraining arbitrary energy deposition histories using the cosmic microwave background (CMB); in this note, we present results describing the energy deposition histories for photons and electr…
The nature of the dark energy is still a mystery and several models have been proposed to explain it. Here we consider a phenomenological model for dark energy decay into photons and particles as proposed by Lima (J. Lima, Phys. Rev. D 54, 2571 (1996)). He studied the thermodynamic aspects of decaying dark energy models in particular in the case of a continuous photon creation and/or disruption. Following his approach, we derive a temperature redshift relation for the CMB which depends on the effective equation of state $w_{eff}$ and on the "adiabatic index" $γ$. Comparing our relation with th…
We show that despite stringent constraints on the shape of the main part of the CMB spectrum, there is considerable room for its modification within its Rayleigh-Jeans (RJ) end, $ω\ll T_{\rm CMB}$. We construct explicit New Physics models that give an order one (or larger) increase of photon count in the RJ tail, which can be tested by existing and upcoming experiments aiming to detect the cosmological 21 cm emission/absorption signal. This class of models stipulates the decay of unstable particles to dark photons, $A'$, that have a small mass, $m_{A'} \sim 10^{-14} - 10^{-9}$ eV, non-vanishin…
The Experiment to Detect the Global Epoch of Reionization Signature (EDGES) collaboration has reported the detection of an absorption feature in the sky-averaged spectrum at $\approx 78$ MHz. This signal has been interpreted as the absorption of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons at redshifts $15 \lesssim z \lesssim 20$ by the 21cm hyperfine transition of neutral hydrogen, whose temperature is expected to be coupled to the gas temperature by the Wouthuysen-Field effect during this epoch. Because the gas is colder than the CMB, the 21cm signal is seen in absorption. However, the absorpti…

In this paper, by considering an absorption probability independent of photon wavelength, we show that current type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and gamma ray burst (GRBs) observations plus high-redshift measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation temperature support cosmic acceleration regardless of the transparent-universe assumption. Two flat scenarios are considered in our analyses: the $Λ$CDM model and a kinematic model. We consider $τ(z)=2\ln(1+z)^{\varepsilon}$, where $τ(z)$ denotes the opacity between an observer at $z=0$ and a source at $z$. This choice is equivalent to …
The CMB observation sets stringent constraints on MeV dark matter (DM) annihilating into charged states/photons in s-wave, and the recent observation of the 21-cm absorption at the cosmic dawn reported by EDGES is also very strict for s-wave annihilations of MeV DM. The millicharged DM with p-wave dominant annihilations during the freeze-out period are considered in literatures to give an explanation about the 21-cm absorption, with photon mediated scattering cooling the hydrogen. In this paper, we focus on the annihilation of millicharged DM being s-wave dominant. To explain the 21-cm absorpt…
We investigate the radiative decay of the cosmic neutrino background, and its impact on the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that is known to be a nearly perfect black body. We derive exact formulae for the decay of a heavier neutrino into a lighter neutrino and a photon, $ν_j \to ν_i + γ$, and of absorption as its inverse, $ν_i + γ\to ν_j$, by accounting for the precise form of the neutrino momentum distribution. Our calculations show that if the neutrinos are heavier than $\mathcal O(0.1)$ eV, the exact formulae give results that differ by $\sim$50%, compared with approximat…
In the inhomogeneous Universe, the cosmological conversion of dark photons into ordinary photons (and vice versa) may happen at a great number of resonance redshifts. This alters the CMB observed energy spectrum and degree of small-scale anisotropies. We utilize results from the EAGLE simulation to obtain the conversion probability along random line-of-sights to quantify these effects. We then apply our results to the case where dark photons are sourced by dark matter decay and their high-redshift conversion into ordinary photons modify the global 21 cm signal expected from the cosmic dawn era…
We argue that dark matter in the form of macroscopically large nuggets of standard model quarks and antiquarks can help to alleviate the tension between standard model cosmology and the recent EDGES observation of a stronger than anticipated 21 cm absorption feature. The effect occurs as a result of the thermal emission from quark nugget dark matter at early times and at energies well below the peak of the CMB. Similar radiation at early times may also contribute a fraction of the GHz range excess observed by ARCADE2.
In view of the current interest in combining different observations to constraint annihilating WIMP dark matter, we examine the relation between the Sommerfeld effect at the recombination epoch and in the galactic halo. By considering an up-to-date collection of interpolations of cosmic rays lepton data (AMS-02 2014, Fermi and PAMELA), as dark matter annihilation signals, we show that current cosmic rays measurements and recent Planck 2015 constraints from CMB anisotropies almost overlap for dark matter masses of the order of few $TeV$, although great theoretical uncertainties afflict cosmic r…
Within the framework of a flat cosmological model a propagation of an instantaneous burst of isotropic radiation is considered from the moment of its beginning at some initial redshift z0 to the moment of its registration now (at z=0). We take into account Thomson scattering by free electrons and scattering in La and Lb lines of primordial hydrogen and in lines 1s2 - 1s2p, 1s3p (1S-1P*) of HeI. It is shown that relative amplitude of spectrum distortions caused by scattering in these lines may be from 1000 to 10000 times greater than maximum possible amplitude due to scattering in subordinate l…
The EDGES low-band experiment has measured an absorption feature in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB), corresponding to the 21 cm hyperfine transition of hydrogen at redshift $z \simeq 17$, before the era of cosmic reionization. The amplitude of this absorption is connected to the ratio of singlet and triplet hyperfine states in the hydrogen gas, which can be parametrized by a spin temperature. The EDGES result suggests that the spin temperature is lower than the expected temperatures of both the CMB and the hydrogen gas. A variety of mechanisms have been proposed in order to exp…
An absorption dip in the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background observed by the EDGES experiment suggests an unexplained reduction of the hydrogen spin temperature at cosmic redshift z ~ 17. The mass of dark-matter axions could correspond to the hyperfine splitting of 5.9 micro-eV, between the triplet (H1) and singlet (H0) state. We calculate the rate for a+ H0 <-> H1 in two ways, and find that it is orders of magnitude smaller than the CMB-mediated transition rate, so irrelevant. As a result, this process cannot be used to rule in or out dark matter axions of mass = hyperfine splitting. …
We examine the absorption of cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons by formaldehyde (H2CO) over cosmic time. The K-doublet rotational transitions of H2CO become "refrigerated" - their excitation temperatures are driven below the CMB temperature - via collisional pumping by molecular hydrogen (H2). "Anti-inverted" H2CO line ratios thus provide an accurate measurement of the H2 density in molecular clouds. Using a radiative transfer model, we demonstrate that H2CO centimeter wavelength line excitation and detectability are nearly independent of redshift or gas kinetic temperature. Since the H…
The energy spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) allows constraining episodes of energy release in the early Universe. In this paper we revisit and refine the computations of the cosmological thermalization problem. For this purpose a new code, called CosmoTherm, was developed that allows solving the coupled photon-electron Boltzmann equation in the expanding, isotropic Universe for small spectral distortion in the CMB. We explicitly compute the shape of the spectral distortions caused by energy release due to (i) annihilating dark matter; (ii) decaying relict particles; (iii) diss…
We give a formulation of the radiative transfer equation for Lyman alpha photons which allows us to include the two-photon corrections for the 3s-1s and 3d-1s decay channels during cosmological hydrogen recombination. We use this equation to compute the corrections to the Sobolev escape probability for Lyman alpha photons during hydrogen recombination, which then allow us to calculate the changes in the free electron fraction and CMB temperature and polarization power spectra. We show that the effective escape probability changes by DP/P ~+ 11% at z~1400 in comparison with the one obtained usi…
Updated constraints on dark matter cross section and mass are presented combining CMB power spectrum measurements from Planck, WMAP9, ACT, and SPT as well as several low-redshift datasets (BAO, HST, supernovae). For the CMB datasets, we combine WMAP9 temperature and polarization data for l <= 431 with Planck temperature data for 432 < l < 2500, ACT and SPT data for l > 2500, and Planck CMB four-point lensing measurements. We allow for redshift-dependent energy deposition from dark matter annihilation by using a `universal' energy absorption curve. We also include an updated treatment of the ex…
The stronger than expected 21-cm absorption was observed by EDGES recently, and another anomaly of $^8$Be transitions would be signatures of new interactions. These two issues may be related to each other, e.g., pseudoscalar $A$ mediated fermionic millicharged dark matter (DM), and the 21-cm absorption could be induced by photon mediated scattering between MeV millicharged DM and hydrogen. This will be explored in this paper. For fermionic millicharged DM $\barχ χ$ with masses in a range of $2 m_A < 2 m_χ < 3 m_A$, the p-wave annihilation $\barχ χ\to A A$ would be dominant during DM freeze-out…
One of the explanations for the recent EDGES-LOW band 21-cm measurements of a strong absorption signal around 80~MHz is the presence of an excess radio background to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). Such excess can be produced by the decay of unstable particles into small mass dark photons which have a non-zero mixing angle with electromagnetism. We use the EDGES-LOW band measurements to derive joint constraints on the properties of the early galaxies and the parameters of such a particle physics model for the excess radio background. A Bayesian analysis shows that a high star formation …

In this paper we consider the effects of resonance and electron scattering on the escape of Lyman alpha photons during cosmological hydrogen recombination. We pay particular attention to the influence of atomic recoil, Doppler boosting and Doppler broadening using a Fokker-Planck approximation of the redistribution function describing the scattering of photons on the Lyman alpha resonance of moving hydrogen atoms. We extend the computations of our recent paper on the influence of the 3d/3s-1s two-photon channels on the dynamics of hydrogen recombination, simultaneously including the full time-…
The ARCADE2 and LWA1 experiments have claimed an excess over the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at low radio frequencies. If the cosmological high-redshift contribution to this radio background is between 0.1% and 22% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz, it could explain the tentative EDGES Low-Band detection of the anomalously deep absorption in the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen. We use the upper limit on the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization ($z=9.1$) based on 141 hours of observations with LOFAR to evaluate the contribution of the high redshift Universe to the detected radio background. …
We present and compare several cosmological constraints on the cross section for elastic scattering between dark matter (DM) and baryons, for cross sections with a range of power-law dependences on the DM-baryon relative velocity $v$, especially focusing on the case of $σ\propto v^{-4}$. We study constraints spanning a wide range of epochs in cosmological history, from pre-recombination distortions to the blackbody spectrum and anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), to modifications to the intergalactic medium temperature and the resulting 21cm signal, and discuss the allowed s…
We investigate the hypothesis that Coulomb-type interactions between dark matter (DM) and baryons explain the anomalously low 21cm brightness-temperature minimum at redshift z ~ 17 that was recently measured by the EDGES experiment. In particular, we reassess the validity of the scenario where a small fraction of the total DM is millicharged, focusing on newly derived constraints from Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Crucially, the CMB power spectrum is sensitive to DM-baryon scattering if the fraction of interacting DM is larger than (or comparable to) the fractional uncert…
This paper explores the possibility that dark matter particles are objects with a set of excitable levels, as for a string or drum. A change in excitation is associated with the absorption or emission of a photon, and the probability of such a change is dependent on the ambient photon energy density. Particle mass comes entirely from excitations. Such dark matter with excitable levels, or DMWEL, particles have a distribution of masses which freezes out to its present-day form during the early universe. In the particular model considered, consistency with Planck CMB anisotropy observations impl…
Anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have proven to be a very powerful tool to constrain dark matter annihilation at the epoch of recombination. However, CMB constraints are currently derived using a number of reasonable but yet un-tested assumptions that could potentially lead to a misestimation of the true bounds. In this paper we examine the potential impact of these systematic effects. In particular, we separately study the propagation of the secondary particles produced by annihilation in two energy regimes; first following the shower from the initial particle energy to t…
The z_abs = 2.504 Lyman Limit absorption system (LLS) towards Q1009+2956 has previously been used to estimate the primordial deuterium abundance. Since the initial measurement by Burles & Tytler, this quasar has been observed extensively with the Keck telescope, providing a substantial increase in signal-to-noise (from 60 to 147 at continuum level of Ly-alpha at z_abs=2.504). We explore a set of different models for the absorption system and find that the deuterium feature is contaminated by Ly-alpha absorption from a low column density H I cloud. This significantly limits precision to which o…
