This work presents a detailed spectroscopic case study of four long-duration transition-region (TR) explosive events (EEs) observed in NOAA Active Region 13213 on 2023 February 10 using the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph. The dynamic spectral evolution of each event is tracked through multicomponent Gaussian fitting of the Si IV 1403 Å line profiles. Three recurrent spectral morphologies are identified and characterized: bilateral wing enhancement, exclusive red-wing enhancement, and exclusive blue-wing enhancement, among which bilateral enhancement is the most common in the studied cases. Throughout their lifetimes of 20-25 minutes, these events display sustained and evolving bidirectional flows, with high-velocity components ($|v|$ > 100 km $s^{-1}$) emerging in late phases. These spectral signatures are interpreted as evidence of ongoing or recurrent magnetic reconnection, where bilateral profiles correspond to bidirectional outflows, and exclusive wing enhancements represent geometric or evolutionary phases of the same process. In contrast, cotemporal flare ribbons and loop structures exhibit pronounced, unidirectional redshifts. This study underscores that significant non-Gaussian wing enhancement, rather than exclusively high speed, constitutes a defining spectroscopic signature of EEs, and provides detailed kinematic constraints on the dynamics of such TR EEs.
We report spectroscopic observations in support of a novel view of transition region explosive events, observations that lend empirical evidence that at least in some cases explosive events may be nothing else than spinning narrow spicule-like structures. Our spectra of textbook explosive events with simultaneous Doppler flow of a red and of a blue component are extreme cases of high spectro-scopic velocities that lack apparent motion, to be expected if interpreted as a pair of collimated, linearly moving jets. The awareness of this conflict led us to the alternate interpretation of redshift a…
In this paper, we extend our earlier work to provide additional evidence for an alternative scenario to explain the nature of so-called `explosive events'. The bi-directed, fast Doppler motion of explosive events observed spectroscopically in the transition region emission is classically interpreted as a pair of bidirectional jets moving upward and downward from a reconnection site. We discuss the problems of such a model. In our previous work, we focused basically on the discrepancy of fast Doppler motion without detectable motion in the image plane. We now suggest an alternative scenario for…
Magnetic reconnection is thought to be a key process in most of solar eruptions. Thanks to high-resolution observations and simulations, the studied scale of reconnection process has become smaller and smaller. Spectroscopic observations show that the reconnection site can be very small, which always exhibits a bright core and two extended wings with fast speeds, i.e., transition-region explosive events. In this paper, using the PLUTO code, we perform a 2-D magnetohydrodynamic simulation to investigate the small-scale reconnection in double current sheets. Based on our simulation results, such…
The solar atmosphere contains a wide variety of small-scale transient features. Here, we explore the inter-relation between some of them such as surges, explosive events and blinkers via simultaneous spectral and imaging data taken with the TRACE imager, the SUMER, and CDS spectrometers on board SoHO, and SVST La Palma. The alignment of all data both in time and solar XY shows that SUMER line profiles, which are attributed to explosive events, are due to a surge phenomenon. The surge is triggered, most probably, by one or more Elerman bombs which are best visible in Halpha +-350 A but were als…
Recent imaging observations with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograp (IRIS) have revealed prevalent intermittent jets with apparent speeds of 80--250 km~s$^{-1}$ from the network lanes in the solar transition region (TR). On the other hand, spectroscopic observations of the TR lines have revealed the frequent presence of highly non-Gaussian line profiles with enhanced emission at the line wings, often referred as explosive events (EEs). Using simultaneous imaging and spectroscopic observations from IRIS, we investigate the relationship between EEs and network jets. We first identify EEs f…
We present study of a typical explosive event (EE) at sub-arcsecond scale witnessed by strong non-Gaussian profiles with blue- and red-shifted emission of up to 150 km/s seen in the transition-region Si IV 1402.8 Å, and the chromospheric Mg II k 2796.4 Å and C II 1334.5 Å observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph at unprecedented spatial and spectral resolution. For the first time a EE is found to be associated with very small-scale ($\sim$120 km wide) plasma ejection followed by retraction in the chromosphere. These small-scale jets originate from a compact bright-point-like struc…
The second Hi-C flight (Hi-C2.1) provided unprecedentedly-high spatial and temporal resolution ($\sim$250km, 4.4s) coronal EUV images of Fe IX/X emission at 172 Å, of AR 12712 on 29-May-2018, during 18:56:21-19:01:56 UT. Three morphologically-different types (I: dot-like, II: loop-like, III: surge/jet-like) of fine-scale sudden-brightening events (tiny microflares) are seen within and at the ends of an arch filament system in the core of the AR. Although type Is (not reported before) resemble IRIS-bombs (in size, and brightness wrt surroundings), our dot-like events are apparently much hotter,…
We present a multiwavelength analysis of the long duration flare observed on 15 April 2002 (soft X-ray peak time at 03:55 UT, SOL2002-04-15T03:55). This flare occurred on the disk (S15W01) in NOAA 9906 and was observed by a number of space instruments including the Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/EIT), the RESIK spectrometer onboard the Coronas-F spacecraft, and the Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). We have performed a complex analysis of these measurements and studied the morphology and physical parameters characteriz…
We present the statistical analysis of 33 flare-related coronal jets, and discuss the link between the jet and the flare properties in these events. We selected jets that were observed between 2010 and 2016 by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on board the Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) and are temporally and spatially associated to flares observed by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectrometric Imager (RHESSI). For each jet, we calculated the jet duration and projected velocity in the plane of sky. The jet duration distribution has a median of 18.8 minutes. The projected velocities…
SNhunt151 was initially classified as a supernova (SN) impostor (nonterminal outburst of a massive star). It exhibited a slow increase in luminosity, lasting about 450 d, followed by a major brightening that reaches M_V ~ -18 mag. No source is detected to M_V > -13 mag in archival images at the position of SNhunt151 before the slow rise. Low-to-mid-resolution optical spectra obtained during the pronounced brightening show very little evolution, being dominated at all times by multicomponent Balmer emission lines, a signature of interaction between the material ejected in the new outburst and t…
We present a detailed study of V899 Mon (a new member in the FUors/EXors family of young low-mass stars undergoing outburst), based on our long-term monitoring of the source starting from November 2009 to April 2015. Our optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic monitoring recorded the source transitioning from its first outburst to a short duration quiescence phase ($<$ 1 year), and then returning to a second outburst. We report here the evolution of the outflows from inner region of the disk as the accretion rate evolved in various epochs. Our high resolution (R$\sim$37000) opt…
Results from the Solar Maximum Mission showed a close connection between the hard X-ray and transition region emission in solar flares. Analogously, the modern combination of RHESSI and IRIS data can inform the details of heating processes in ways never before possible. We study a small event that was observed with RHESSI, IRIS, SDO, and Hinode, allowing us to strongly constrain the heating and hydrodynamical properties of the flare, with detailed observations presented in a previous paper. Long duration red-shifts of transition region lines observed in this event, as well as many other events…
We will follow the two-families scenario described in the accompanying paper, in which compact stars having a very small radius and masses not exceeding about 1.5$M_\odot$ are made of hadrons, while more massive compact stars are quark stars. In the present paper we discuss the dynamics of the transition of a hadronic star into a quark star. We will show that the transition takes place in two phases: a very rapid one, lasting a few milliseconds, during which the central region of the star converts into quark matter and the process of conversion is accelerated by the existence of strong hydrody…

Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process that plays a critical role not only in energy release in the solar atmosphere, but also in fusion, astrophysical, and other space plasma environments. One of the challenges in explaining solar observations in which reconnection is thought to play a critical role is to account for the transition of the dynamics from a slow quasi-continuous phase to a fast and impulsive energetic burst of much shorter duration. Despite the theoretical progress in identifying mechanisms that might lead to rapid onset, a lack of observations of this transition …

The origin of the activity in the solar corona is a long-standing problem in solar physics. Recent satellite observations, such as Hinode, Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), show the detail characteristics of the solar atmosphere and try to reveal the energy transfer from the photosphere to the corona through the magnetic fields and its energy conversion by various processes. However, quantitative estimation of energy transfer along the magnetic field is not enough. There are mainly two reason why it is difficult to observe the energy transfer from …
EW Lac has shown remarkable V/R variations in 1976 - 1986, and a similar V/R variation has started again in around 2007, after some quasi-periodic V/R variation. For the first V/R variation event, we analyze the spectroscopic behaviors of emission lines and shell absorption lines of the Balmer series. The V/R variations of the H_alpha through H_delta lines are characterized by the different manner of variations of the individual emission lines in time lag and in duration of the V/R phases. Weak correlation is also notable between the V/R variations and other variations of the line-profile para…
We studied long duration flare observed with Nobeyama Radioheliograph at frequencies 17 and 34 GHz and with Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager at 25-50 keV. We found that microwave and hard X-ray emission variation contain well-pronounced periodicity with the oscillation period growing from 2.5 to 5 min. Analysis of the loop length and plasma temperature evolution during the flare allowed to interpret the quasi-periodic pulsations in terms of the second standing harmonics of the slow magnetoacoustic mode. This mode can be generated by the initial impulsive energy release and work as…
PDS 110 is a young disk-hosting star in the Orion OB1A association. Two dimming events of similar depth and duration were seen in 2008 (WASP) and 2011 (KELT), consistent with an object in a closed periodic orbit. In this paper we present data from a ground-based observing campaign designed to measure the star both photometrically and spectroscopically during the time of predicted eclipse in September 2017. Despite high-quality photometry, the predicted eclipse did not occur, although coherent structure is present suggesting variable amounts of stellar flux or dust obscuration. We also searched…
(Abridged) Using the Zwicky Transient Facility alert stream, we are conducting a large campaign to spectroscopically classify all transients occurring in galaxies in the Census of the Local Universe (CLU) catalog. The aim of the experiment is to construct a spectroscopically complete, volume-limited sample of transients coincident within 100" of CLU galaxies out to 200 Mpc, and to a depth of 20 mag. We describe the survey design and spectroscopic completeness from the first 16 months of operations. We present results from a systematic search for Calcium rich gap transients in the sample of 22 …
Young solar-type stars are known to show frequent "superflares", which may severely influence the habitable worlds on young planets via intense radiations and coronal mass ejections. Here we report an optical spectroscopic and photometric observation of a long-duration superflare on the young solar-type star EK Draconis (50-120 Myr age) with the Seimei telescope and $Transiting$ $Exoplanet$ $Survey$ $Satellite$ ($TESS$). The flare energy 2.6$\times$10$^{34}$ erg and white-light flare duration 2.2 hr are much larger than those of the largest solar flares, and this is the largest superflare on a…
Much evidence suggests that the solar corona is heated impulsively, meaning that nanoflares may be ubiquitous in quiet and active regions (ARs). Hard X-ray (HXR) observations with unprecedented sensitivity $>$3~keV are now enabled by focusing instruments. We analyzed data from the \textit{Focusing Optics X-ray Solar Imager (FOXSI)} rocket and the \textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR)} spacecraft to constrain properties of AR nanoflares simulated by the EBTEL field-line-averaged hydrodynamics code. We generated model X-ray spectra by computing differential emission measures for…
High-Time-Cadence Spectroscopy and Photometry of Stellar Flares on M-dwarf YZ Canis Minoris with Seimei Telescope and TESS. I. Discovery of Rapid and Short-Duration Prominence Eruptions
We review the current scenario of long-duration Gamma-ray burst (LGRB) progenitors, and in addition, present models of massive stars for a mass range of $10\text{--}150 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ with $Δ\mathrm{M}=10 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ and rotation rate $v/v_{\rm{crit}}=0$ to $0.6$ with a velocity resolution $Δv/v_{\rm{crit}} =0.1$. We further discuss possible metallicity and rotation rate distribution from our models that might be preferable for the creation of successful LGRB candidates given the observed LGRB rates and their metallicity evolution. In the current understanding, LGRBs are associa…
Orion BN/KL is an example of a poorly understood phenomena in star forming regions involving the close encounter of young stellar objects. The explosive structure, the great variety of molecules observed, the energy involved in the event and the mass of the region suggest a contribution in the {chemical diversity} of the local interstellar medium. Nevertheless, the frequency and duration of other events like this have not been determined. In this paper, we explore a recent analytic model that takes into account the interaction of a clump with its molecular environment. We show that the widespr…
