Identification of the particle interaction potential is a challenging and important task in dusty plasma, colloids, and smart materials as it allows the characterization of structure formation and helps predict phase transitions. With the advent of machine learning methods, this interaction can be extracted from particle position data, leading to a generalizable expression which is applicable in different systems. Methods such as sparse regression aim to provide a physically interpretable model that can generalize well, while avoiding unnecessary complexity due to overfitting. In this work, we present the use of the Sparse Identification of Nonlinear Dynamics (SINDy) with the weak formulation to learn equations of motion for noisy data from simple simulations of two dust particles interacting with a Yukawa (shielded Coulomb) potential. The application of these methods to experimental dusty plasma data is discussed, particularly in the case of simulation data and glass box experiments in RF discharge gravity environments and DC discharge microgravity environments, such as the Plasmakristall-4 (PK-4) experiment.
A hypothesis on the physical mechanism generating the heartbeat instability in complex (dusty) plasmas is presented. It is suggested that the instability occurs due to the periodically repeated critical transformation on the boundary between the microparticle-free area (void) and the complex plasma. The critical transformation is supposed to be analogous to the formation of the sheath in the vicinity of an electrode. The origin of the transformation is the loss of the electrons and ions on microparticles surrounding the void. We have shown that this hypothesis is consistent with the experiment…
Agglomeration of highly charged microparticles was observed and studied in complex plasma experiments carried out in a capacitively coupled rf discharge. The agglomeration was caused by strong dust density waves triggered in a particle cloud by decreasing neutral gas pressure. Using a high-speed camera during this unstable regime, it was possible to resolve the motion of individual microparticles and to show that the relative velocities of some particles were sufficiently high to overcome the mutual Coulomb repulsion and hence to result in agglomeration. After stabilising the cloud again throu…
Complex plasmas consist of microparticles embedded in a low-temperature plasma and allow investigating various effects by tracing the motion of these microparticles. Dust density waves appear in complex plasmas as self-excited acoustic waves in the microparticle fluid at low neutral gas pressures. Here we show that various properties of these waves depend on the position of the microparticle cloud with respect to the plasma sheath and explain this finding in terms of the underlying ion-drift instability. These results may be helpful in better understanding the propagation of dust density waves…
The effect of micron-sized particles on a low-pressure capacitively-coupled rf discharge is studied both experimentally and using numerical simulations. In the laboratory experiments, microparticle clouds occupying a considerable fraction of the discharge volume are supported against gravity with the help of the thermophoretic force. The spatiotemporally resolved optical emission measurements are performed with different arrangements of microparticles. The numerical simulations are carried out on the basis of a one-dimensional hybrid (fluid-kinetic) discharge model describing the interaction b…
This article presents two measurement techniques to determine the diameter of a single dust particle during plasma operation. Using long-distance microscopy (LDM), the particle is imaged from outside the plasma chamber. In combination with phase-resolved resonance measurements the development of the volume-averaged particle mass density is measured over several hours. The measurements show a significant decrease of mass density for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) particles due to a plasma etching process on the surface. This is explained by a core-shell model and is supported by a surface rough…
Semiconductor nanocrystals, quantum dots, are known to exhibit the quantum-confined Stark effect which reveals itself in the shift of their photoluminescence spectra in response to external electric field. It was, therefore, proposed to use quantum dots deposited on the microparticle surface for the optical measurement of the charge acquired by the microparticles in low-temperature plasmas. Thermal balance of a quantum dot residing on the surface of a microparticle immersed in a plasma is considered in this work. It is shown for typical plasma parameters that under periodically pulsed plasma c…
Complex (dusty) plasmas allow experimental studies of various physical processes occurring in classical liquids and solids by directly observing individual microparticles. A major problem is that the interaction between microparticles is generally not molecular-like. In this Letter, we propose how to achieve a molecular-like interaction potential in laboratory 2D complex plasmas. We argue that this principal aim can be achieved by using relatively small microparticles and properly adjusting discharge parameters. If experimentally confirmed, this will make it possible to employ complex plasmas …
Complex plasmas are low-temperature plasmas that contain micrometer-size particles in addition to the neutral gas particles and the ions and electrons that make up the plasma. The microparticles interact strongly and display a wealth of collective effects. Here we report on linked numerical simulations that reproduce many of the experimental results of complex plasmas. We model a capacitively coupled plasma with a fluid code written for the commercial package comsol. The output of this model is used to calculate forces on microparticles. The microparticles are modeled using the molecular dynam…
In the last experiment with the PK-3 Plus laboratory onboard the International Space Station, interactions of millimeter-size metallic spheres with a complex plasma were studied~[M. Schwabe {\it et al.}, New J. Phys. {\bf 19}, 103019 (2017)]. Among the phenomena observed was the formation of cavities (regions free of microparticles forming a complex plasma) surrounding the spheres. The size of the cavity is governed by the balance of forces experienced by the microparticles at the cavity edge. In this article we develop a detailed theoretical model describing the cavity size and demonstrate th…
In a dusty plasma, an impulsively generated shock, i.e., blast wave, was observed to decay less than would be expected due to gas friction alone. In the experiment, a single layer of microparticles was levitated in a radio-frequency glow-discharge plasma. In this layer, the microparticles were self-organized as a 2D solid-like strongly coupled plasma, which was perturbed by the piston-like mechanical movement of a wire. To excite a blast wave, the wire's motion was abruptly stopped, so that the input of mechanical energy ceased at a known time. It was seen that, as it propagated across the lay…
We report on the observation of the self-excited dust density waves in the dc discharge complex plasma. The experiments were performed under microgravity conditions in the Plasmakristall-4 facility on board the International Space Station. In the experiment, the microparticle cloud was first trapped in an inductively coupled plasma, then released to drift for some seconds in a dc discharge with constant current. After that the discharge polarity was reversed. DC plasma containing a drifting microparticle cloud was found to be strongly non-uniform in terms of microparticle drift velocity and pl…
We study the onset and characteristics of vortices in complex (dusty) plasmas using two-dimensional simulations in a setup modeled after the PK-3 Plus laboratory. A small number of microparticles initially self-arranges in a monolayer around the void. As additional particles are introduced, an extended system of vortices develops due to a non-zero curl of the plasma forces. We demonstrate a shear-thinning effect in the vortices. Velocity structure functions and the energy and enstrophy spectra show that vortex flow turbulence is present that is in essence of the "classical" Kolmogorov type.
Equilibrating gravitation by electric forces, microparticles can be confined in the plasma sheath above suitably biased local electrodes.Their position depends on the detailed structure of the plasma sheath and on the charge that the particles acquire in the surrounding plasma, that is by the electron and ion currents towards it. Bias switching experiments reveal how the charge and equilibrium position of the microparticle change upon altered sheath conditions. We observe similar particle behaviors also in the afterglow of the discharge for a persisting bias voltage on the electrode: damped os…
We investigated the possibility of using a layer of quantum dots (QDs) deposited on the microparticle surface for the measurement of the charge the microparticle acquires when immersed into a plasma. To that end, we performed the calculations of the Stark shift of the photoluminescence spectrum of QDs caused by the fluctuating local electric field. In our calculations, we assumed the plasma-delivered surplus electrons to be distributed on the surface of a microparticle. According to our calculations, the Stark shift will acquire measurable values when the lifetime of the quasi-stationary confi…
The force on a microparticle in a complex plasma by streaming ions, the so-called ion drag force, is not well known. However, it is important for the understanding of interesting phenomena in complex plasmas such as the void formation under microgravity conditions. The PK-4 experiment, which is developed for a later use on board of the International Space Station, is ideally suited for investigating this problem. In this experiment a complex DC-plasma is created in a glass tube in which the microparticles flow from the cathode to the anode. Measuring the microparticle velocities, the forces on…
Effective potential of a charged dusty particle moving in homogeneous plasma has a negative part that provides attraction between similarly charged dusty particles. A depth of this potential well is great enough to ensure both stability of crystal structure of dusty plasma and sizable value of surface tension of a boundary surface of dusty region. The latter depends on the orientation of the surface relative to the counter-ion flow, namely, it is maximal and positive for the surface normal to the flow and minimal and negative for the surface along the flow. For the most cases of dusty plasma i…
We report on experimental evidence of visco-elastic effects in a strongly coupled dusty plasma through investigations of the propagation characteristics of low frequency dust acoustic waves and by excitations of transverse shear waves in a DC discharge Argon plasma.
During the recent decade a steadily increasing number of papers devoted to so-called "quantum dusty plasmas" (QDP) appeared. These systems are combining the properties of dusty (i.e. micrometer to nanometer-sized particles containing) plasmas with quantum effects %(of electrons) appearing at high-density and/or low-temperature. Many exciting properties of QDP were predicted including nontrivial collective oscillations and linear and nonlinear waves. It was predicted that the results have relevance for dense astrophysical plasmas such as white dwarf stars, neutron stars, magnetars and laborator…
The existence of magnetosonic solitons in dusty plasmas is investigated. The nonlinear magnetohydrodynamic equations for a warm dusty magnetoplasma are thus derived. A solution of the nonlinear equations is presented. It is shown that, due to the presence of dust, static structures are allowed. This is in sharp contrast to the formation of the so called shocklets in usual magnetoplasmas. A comparatively small number of dust particles can thus drastically alter the behavior of the nonlinear structures in magnetized plasmas.
Dusty plasma crystals have traditionally been observed and studied in radio frequency (RF) discharge plasmas and their formation in a DC glow discharge plasma remains experimentally challenging. We report the first ever observation of a stable dusty plasma Coulomb crystal in the cathode sheath region of a DC glow discharge plasma. The observations are made in the DPEx device where crystals of mono-disperse Melamine Formaldehyde grains are produced in the background of an Argon plasma. The crystalline nature of the structure is confirmed through a host of measurements that includes the radial p…
Real dusty crystals are inhomogeneous due to the presence of external forces. We suggest approximations for calculations of different types of inhomogeneous DC (chain and DC with a few slabs) in the equilibrium state. The results are in a good agreement with experimental results and can be used as an effective diagnostic method for many dusty systems.
Low frequency longitudinal wave instability in magnetized high correlation dusty plasmas is investigated. The dust charging relaxation is taken into account. It is found that the instablity of wave is determined significantly by the frequency of wave, the dust charging relaxation, the shear viscosity and viscoelastic relaxation time, the coupling parameter of high correlation of dust as well the strength of magnetic field.
Simulations of dusty plasmas were performed using GRAPE-6, a special-purpose computer designed for gravitational N-body problems. The collective behaviour of dust particles, which are injected into the plasma, was studied by means of three-dimensional computer simulations. As an example of a dusty plasma simulation, we have calculated movement of dust particles in plasmas under microgravity conditions. In this simulation, a dust-free region called the "void" is observed in the dust cloud. Another example was to simulate experiments on Coulomb crystals in plasmas. Formation of a Coulomb crystal…
A rotating dusty plasma apparatus was constructed to provide the possibility of experimental emulation of extremely high magnetic fields by means of the Coriolis force, observable in a co-rotating measurement frame. We present collective excitation spectra for different rotation rates with a magnetic induction equivalent of up to 3200 Tesla. We identify the onset of magnetoplasmon-equivalent mode dispersion in the rotating macroscopic two-dimensional single-layer dusty plasma. The experimental results are supported by molecular dynamics simulations of 2D magnetized Yukawa systems.
In this article we are going to consider dust acoustic wave in dusty plasma whose constituents are inertial negative charged dust particles, Boltzmann distributed electrons and non-thermal distributed ions with variable dust charge. Using reductive perturbation method, we have obtained Korteweg-de Veries (kdv) and modified kdv(mkdv) equations. A Sagdeev potential for the system and stability conditions for solitonic solution are also derived.
A generalized hydrodynamical model has been used to study low frequency modes in a strongly coupled, cold, magnetized dusty plasma. Such plasmas exhibit elastic properties due to strong correlations among dust particles and the tensile stresses imparted by the magnetic field. It has been shown that longitudinal compressional Alfven modes and elasticity modified transverse shear mode exist in such a medium. The features of these collective modes are established and discussed.
An analysis of superdiffusion in two-dimensional strongly correlated Yukawa liquids is presented. In particular, we report a regular, montonic behavior of the diffusion exponent on the screening parameter.
Particles in a dusty plasma crystal disturbed by a shock wave are tracked using a three-mode interacting multiple model approach. Color-coded mode probabilities are used to visualize the shock wave propagation through the crystal.
Expressions for the ion and electron thermal forces acting on a charged grain, suspended in a weakly ionized plasma subject to temperature gradients, are derived. The main emphasize is on the conditions pertinent to the investigations of complex (dusty) plasmas in gas discharges. Estimates show that for the electron temperature gradients $\sim {\mathcal O}$(eV/cm) typically encountered in laboratory gas discharges, the electron thermal force can become an important player among other forces acting on micron-size grains.
One-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional strongly-coupled dusty plasma rings have been created experimentally. Longitudinal (acoustic) and transverse (optical) dispersion relations for the 1-ring were measured and found to be in very good agreement with the theory for an unbounded straight chain of particles interacting through a Yukawa (i.e., screened Coulomb or Debye-Hückel) potential. These rings provide a new system in which to study one-dimensional and quasi-one-dimensional physics.
We investigated the self-excited as well as optogalvanically stimulated heartbeat instability in RF discharge complex plasma. Three video cameras measured the motion of the microparticles, the plasma emission, and the laser-induced fluorescence simultaneously. Comprehensive studies of the optogalvanic control of the heartbeat instability revealed that the microparticle suspension can be stabilized by a continuous laser, whereas a modulated laser beam induces the void contraction either transiently or resonantly. The resonance occurred when the laser modulation frequency coincided with the freq…
A generalized hydrodynamic (GHD) model depicting the behaviour of visco-elastic fluids has often been invoked to explore the behaviour of a strongly coupled dusty plasma medium below their crystallization limit. The model has been successful in describing the collective normal modes of the strongly coupled dusty plasma medium observed experimentally. The paper focuses on the study of nonlinear dynamical characteristic features of this model. Specifically, the evolution of coherent vorticity patches are being investigated here within the framework of this model. A comparison with Newtonian flui…
An experimental investigation of the propagation characteristics of shock waves in an inhomogeneous dusty plasma is carried out in the Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device. A homogeneous dusty plasma, made up of poly-dispersive kaolin particles, is initially formed in a DC glow discharge Argon plasma by maintaining a dynamic equilibrium of the pumping speed and the gas feeding rate. Later, an equilibrium density inhomogeneity in the dust fluid is created by introducing an imbalance in the original dynamic equilibrium. Non-linear wave structures are then excited in this inhomogeneous dusty p…
Ordered dusty structures influence plasma conditions. This influence can be revealed, when plasma spectral characteristics change, as dusty particles are injected. For example, a variation in the atomic temperature leads to a variation in the profiles of spectral lines. We studied the profile of a 585 nm neon spectral line in the dusty structures. The structures levitated in a positive column of a glow discharge at a pressure of 50-150 Pa and with a current of 1-9 mA. We scanned the profile with the use of a Fabry-Perot interferometer, by changing the air pressure between the interferometer mi…
We report the first observation of the Mach cones excited by a larger microparticle (projectile) moving through a cloud of smaller microparticles (dust) in a complex plasma with neon as a buffer gas under microgravity conditions. A collective motion of the dust particles occurs as propagation of the contact discontinuity. The corresponding speed of sound was measured by a special method of the Mach cone visualization. The measurement results are incompatible with the theory of ion acoustic waves. The estimate for the pressure in a strongly coupled Coulomb system and a scaling law for the compl…
We consider a hydrodynamic model of a quantum dusty plasma. We prove mathematically that the resulting dust ion acoustic plasma waves present the property of being conservative on average. Furthermore, we test this property numerically, confirming its validity. Using standard techniques from the study of dynamical systems, as for example the Lyapunov characteristic exponents, we investigate the chaotic dynamics of the plasma and show numerically its existence for a wide range of parameter values. Finally, we illustrate how chaotic dynamics organizes in the parameter space for fixed values of t…
The formation of the gigantic dust-acoustic rouge waves (DARWs) in an electron depleted unmagnetized opposite polarity dusty plasma system is theoretically observed for the first time. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation (derived by utilizing the reductive perturbation method) has been analytically as well as numerically analyzed to identify the basic features (viz., height, thickness, and modulational instability, etc.) of DARWs. The results obtained form this investigation should be useful in understanding the basic properties of these rouge waves which can predict to be formed in electron de…
It is well known that the form of grain size distribution strongly influences the linear dielectric response of a dusty plasma. In previous results [IEEE Trans. Plasma Sci. 29, 182 (2001)], it was shown that for a class of size distributions, there is an equivalence to a Lorentzian distribution of mono-sized particles. The electrostatic response to a slowly moving test charge, using a second order approximation can then be found [Phys. Lett. A 305, 79 (2002)]. It is also well known [Phys. Plasmas 10, 3484 (2003)] that the dynamical charging of grains in a dusty plasma enhances the shielding of…
The ionization equation of state (IEOS) for a cloud of the dust particles in the low-pressure gas discharge under microgravity conditions is proposed. IEOS relates pairs of the parameters specific for the charged components of dusty plasma. It is based on the modified collision enhance collection model adapted for the Wigner--Seitz cell model of the dust cloud. This model takes into account the effect of ion--atom collisions on the ion current to the dust particles and assumes that the screening length for the ion--particle interaction is of the same order of magnitude as the radius of the Wig…
A versatile table-top dusty plasma experimental (DPEx) device to study flow induced excitations of linear and nonlinear waves/structures in a complex plasma is presented. In this {$Π$}-shaped apparatus a DC glow discharge plasma is produced between a disc shaped anode and a grounded long cathode {tray} by applying a high voltage DC in the background of a neutral gas {(Argon)} and subsequently a dusty plasma is created by introducing micron sized dust particles that get charged and levitated in the sheath region. A flow of the dust particles is induced in a controlled manner by adjusting the pu…
Strongly coupled plasmas in which the interaction energy exceeds the kinetic energy play an important role in many astrophysical and laboratory systems including compact stars, laser plasmas and dusty plasmas. They exhibit many unusual collective properties, such as liquid or crystalline behaviour, peculiar oscillation spectra and transport properties. Recently, strongly coupled plasmas were studied in the presence of a strong magnetic field by computer simulations, and strong modifications of their transport properties and oscillation spectra were observed. While strong magnetization is commo…
We present an investigation of the combined effects of the Debye-Huckel (DH) repulsive and overlaping Debye spheres (ODS) attractive interaction potentials around charged dust particles on collective modes, phase separation and ordered dust structures in a strongly coupled dusty plasma. We obtain static and dynamical information via Molecular Dynamics simulations in the liquid and crystallized phases and identify the onset of an instability in the transverse collective mode, by using (zero-temperature) lattice summation method. The present results are useful for understanding the origin of coa…
The nonlinear longitudinal response of a strongly coupled dusty plasma system is analytically investigated using the Generalized Hydrodynamic (GHD) model. It is shown that the Galilean invariant form of the model does not have soliton solutions, but can support a variety of nonlinear singular (yet conservative) solutions like shock structures of zero strength and propagating solutions with cusp like singularities. These novel entities should be detectable in numerical simulations and experiments studying large amplitude longitudinal excitations in such systems.
The basic features of dust-acoustic (DA) waves (DAWs) in four component dusty plasma system (containing inertial cold and hot dust grains, inertialess non-extensive ions and electrons) have been theoretically investigated by deriving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The analytic analysis under consideration demonstrates two types of modes, namely, fast and slow DA modes. The unstable domain for the fast DA mode, which can be recognized by the critical wave number ($k_c$), gives rise to the DA rogue waves (DARWs). It is observed that the amplitude and width of the DARWs are significantly mod…
The temperature of a dust ensemble in a dusty plasma is one of its most fundamental properties. Here, we present experiments using the configurational temperature as a for the temperature analysis in dusty plasmas. Using a model of the particle interactions, the configurational temperature allows us to determine the temperature of the dust ensemble from measurements of the particle positions, rather than particle velocities. The basic concept will be presented and the technique is applied to two-dimensional finite clusters as well as three-dimensional data from an extended dust cloud. Addition…
We examine linear dust acoustic waves (DAWs) in a dusty plasma with strongly correlated dust grains, and discuss possibility of a twisted DA vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). For our purposes, we use the Boltzmann distributed electron and ion density perturbations, the dust continuity and generalized viscoelastic dust momentum equations, and Poisson's equation to obtain a dispersion relation for the modified DAWs. The effects of the polarization force, strong dust couplings, and dust charge fluctuations on the DAW spectrum are examined. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the D…
The mobility of a charged projectile in a strongly coupled dusty plasma is simulated. A net force $F$, opposed by a combination of collisional scattering and gas friction, causes projectiles to drift at a mobility-limited velocity $u_p$. The mobility $μ_p=u_p/F$ of the projectile's motion is obtained. Two regimes depending on $F$ are identified. In the high force regime, $μ_p \propto F^{0.23}$, and the scattering cross section $σ_s$ diminishes as $u_p^{-6/5}$. Results for $σ_s$ are compared with those for a weakly coupled plasma and for two-body collisions in a Yukawa potential. The simulation…
The impacts of dust density inhomogeneity and dust size distribution (DSD) on linear dust acoustic (DA) wave propagation have been investigated theoretically in an inhomogeneous unmagnetized dusty plasma having powerlaw DSD. Two different types of wave modes, viz. slow and fast mode, are found to propagate in this inhomogeneous medium. It is shown that the linear dispersion characteristics of the DA waves are substantially affected by the DSD and density inhomogeneity. Also, it is found that the phase velocity increases with increasing dust density.
The properties of electrostatic transverse shear waves propagating in a strongly coupled dusty plasma with an equilibrium density gradient are examined using the generalized hydrodynamic equation. In the usual kinetic limit, the resulting equation has similarity to zero energy Schrodinger's equation. This has helped in obtaining some exact eigenmode solutions in both cartesian and cylindrical geometries for certain nontrivial density profiles. The corresponding velocity profiles and the discrete eigenfrequencies are obtained for several interesting situations and their physics discussed.
A combined theoretical and experimental analysis of the normal modes of three-dimensional spherially confined Yukawa clusters is presented. Particular attention is paid to the breathing mode and the existence of multiple monopole oscillations in Yukawa systems. Finally, the influence of dissipation on the mode spectrum is investigated.
Nonlinear frequency response analysis is a widely used method for determining system dynamics in the presence of nonlinearities. In dusty plasmas, the plasma-grain interaction (e.g., grain charging fluctuations) can be characterized by a single particle nonlinear response analysis, while grain-grain nonlinear interactions can be determined by a multi-particle nonlinear response analysis. Here, a machine learning-based method to determine the equation of motion in the nonlinear response analysis for dust particles in plasmas is presented. Searching the parameter space in a Bayesian manner allow…
Collective excitations of rotating dusty plasma are analyzed under the quasi localized charge approximation (QLCA) framework for strongly coupled systems by explicitly accounting for the dust rotation in the analysis. Considering the firm analogy of magnetoplasmons with "rotoplasmons" established by the recent rotating dusty plasma experiments, the relaxation introduced by the rotation in their strong coupling and 2-dimensional (often introduced by gravitational sedimentation) characteristics is emphasized in their dispersion. Finite rotation version of both strong and weak coupling dispersion…
In this paper, we studied the structure and dynamics for a trilayer Yukawa crystal. We firstly studied the optimal lattice structure by comparing lattice interaction energy from different lattice distribution, after that, we did the collective mode calculation and analyzed its eigenvectors, if the lattice structure is stable, all the eigenvalues of the dynamical matrix should be positive.
A self-consistent fluid model developed for simulations of micro- gravity dusty plasma experiments has for the first time been used to model asymmetric dusty plasma experiments in a modified GEC reference cell with gravity. The numerical results are directly compared with experimental data and the experimentally determined dependence of global discharge parameters on the applied driving potential and neutral gas pressure is found to be well matched by the model. The local profiles important for dust particle transport are studied and compared with experimentally determined profiles. The radial…
