We introduce the Weighted Planar Stochastic Porous Lattice (WPSPL), a geometrically disordered substrate generated by iteratively subdividing a unit square. At each step a block is selected with probability proportional to its area, divided into four parts, and one sub-block is retained (removed) with probability $q$ ($1-q$). We show analytically that the WPSPL exhibits multifractality for each of its infinitely many nontrivial conserved quantities and demonstrate numerically that its snapshots at different times are statistically self-similar. The dual of the lattice forms a complex network with a power-law degree distribution. Motivated by these properties of this porous lattice, we study bond percolation on the WPSPL, determine the percolation threshold, and estimate the critical exponents $α$, $β$, and $γ$ associated with the specific heat, order parameter, and susceptibility, respectively. The exponents vary continuously with $q$, reflecting a family of distinct universality classes as the global dimension of the lattice depends on $q$. Remarkably, the Rushbrooke inequality, $α+ 2β+ γ\ge 2$, is satisfied in near equality. Notably, the nonporous case ($q=1$) has a global dimension $2$ but lies outside the universality class of conventional two-dimensional lattices. Our results highlight how geometric disorder, multifractality, scale-free coordination number disorder, and porosity produce unconventional critical behavior.
We build a multifractal object and use it as a support to study percolation. We identify some differences between percolation in a multifractal and in a regular lattice. We use many samples of finite size lattices and draw the histogram of percolating lattices against site occupation probability. Depending on a parameter characterizing the multifractal and the lattice size, the histogram can have two peaks. The percolation threshold for the multifractal is lower than for the square lattice. The percolation in the multifractal differs from the percolation in the regular lattice in two points. T…
Recently a multifractal object, $Q_{mf}$, was proposed to study percolation properties in a multifractal support. The area and the number of neighbors of the blocks of $Q_{mf}$ show a non-trivial behavior. The value of the probability of occupation at the percolation threshold, $p_{c}$, is a function of $ρ$, a parameter of $Q_{mf}$ which is related to its anisotropy. We investigate the relation between $p_{c}$ and the average number of neighbors of the blocks as well as the anisotropy of $Q_{mf}$.
We study percolation as a critical phenomenon on a multifractal support. The scaling exponents of the the infinite cluster size ($β$ exponent) and the fractal dimension of the percolation cluster ($d_f$) are quantities that seem do not depend on local anisotropies. These two quantities have the same value as in the standard percolation in regular bidimensional lattices. On the other side, the scaling of the correlation length ($ν$ exponent) unfolds new universality classes due to the local anisotropy of the critical percolation cluster. We use two critical exponents $ν$ according to the percol…
The harmonic measure (or diffusion field or electrostatic potential) near a percolation cluster in two dimensions is considered. Its moments, summed over the accessible external hull, exhibit a multifractal spectrum, which I calculate exactly. The generalized dimensions D(n) as well as the MF function f(alpha) are derived from generalized conformal invariance, and are shown to be identical to those of the harmonic measure on 2D random walks or self-avoiding walks. An exact application to the anomalous impedance of a rough percolative electrode is given. The numerical checks are excellent. Anot…
Using renormalization group methods we study multifractality in directed percolation. Our approach is based on random lattice networks consisting of resistor like and diode like bonds with microscopic noise. These random resistor diode networks capture the features of isotropic as well as directed percolation. In this note we introduce a field theoretic Hamiltonian for the multifractal properties at the transition from the non-percolating to the directed percolating phase. We investigate the multifractal moments of the current distribution and determine a family of critical exponents for these…
Focusing on multifractal properties we investigate electric transport on random resistor diode networks at the phase transition between the non-percolating and the directed percolating phase. Building on first principles such as symmetries and relevance we derive a field theoretic Hamiltonian. Based on this Hamiltonian we determine the multifractal moments of the current distribution that are governed by a family of critical exponents $\{ψ_l \}$. We calculate the family $\{ψ_l \}$ to two-loop order in a diagrammatic perturbation calculation augmented by renormalization group methods.
Using renormalization group methods we study multifractality in percolation at the instance of noisy random resistor networks. We introduce the concept of master operators. The multifractal moments of the current distribution (which are proportional to the noise cumulants $C_R^{(l)} (x, x^\prime)$ of the resistance between two sites x and $x^\prime$ located on the same cluster) are related to such master operators. The scaling behavior of the multifractal moments is governed exclusively by the master operators, even though a myriad of servant operators is involved in the renormalization proced…
We investigate site percolation on a weighted planar stochastic lattice (WPSL) which is a multifractal and whose dual is a scale-free network. Percolation is typically characterized by percolation threshold $p_c$ and by a set of critical exponents $β$, $γ$, $ν$ which describe the critical behavior of percolation probability $P(p)\sim (p_c-p)^β$, mean cluster size $S\sim (p_c-p)^{-γ}$ and the correlation length $ξ\sim (p_c-p)^{-ν}$. Besides, the exponent $τ$ characterizes the cluster size distribution function $n_s(p_c)\sim s^{-τ}$ and the fractal dimension $d_f$ the spanning cluster. We obtain…
A multifractal analysis (MFA) is performed on three-dimensional grayscale images associated with natural porous structures (soil samples). First, computed tomography (CT) scans are carried out on the samples to generate 3D grayscale images. Then, a preliminary analysis is conducted to evaluate key quantities associated with the porosity, such as void fraction, pore volume, connectivity, and surface area. Finally, the samples are successfully identified and separated into two different structure families by using the MFA. A new software (Munari) to carry out the MFA of 3D grayscale images is al…
In this article, we extend the idea of stochastic dyadic Cantor set to weighted planar stochastic lattice that leads to a stochastic porous lattice. The process starts with an initiator which we choose to be a square of unit area for convenience. We then define a generator that divides the initiator or one of the blocks, picked preferentially with respect to their areas, to divide it either horizontally or vertically into two rectangles of which one of them is removed with probability $q=1-p$. We find that the remaining number of blocks and their mass varies with time as $t^{p}$ and $t^{-q}$ r…
In this article, we investigate both site and bond percolation on a weighted planar stochastic lattice (WPSL) which is a multi-multifractal and whose dual is a scale-free network. The characteristic properties of percolation is that it exhibits threshold phenomena as we find sudden or abrupt jump in spanning probability across $p_c$ accompanied by the divergence of some other observable quantities which is reminiscent of continuous phase transition. Indeed, percolation is characterized by the critical behavior of percolation strength $P(p)\sim (p_c-p)^β$, mean cluster size $S\sim (p_c-p)^{-γ}$…
In this article, we investigate explosive bond percolation (EBP) with product rule, formally known as Achlioptas process, on a scale-free multifractal weighted planar stochastic lattice (WPSL). One of the key features of the EBP transition is the delay, compared to corresponding random bond percolation (RBP), in the onset of spanning cluster. However, when it happens, it happens so dramatically that initially it was believed, albeit ultimately proved wrong, that explosive percolation (EP) exhibits first order transition. In the case of EP, much efforts were devoted to resolving the issue of it…
In this paper we consider various models of hydraulic hysteresis in invasive mercury porosimetry. For simulating the hydraulic hysteresis is used isotropic site percolation on three-dimensional square lattices with $(1, d)$-neighborhood. The relationship between the percolation model parameters and invasive porosimetry data is studied phenomenologically. The implementation of the percolation model is based on libraries SPSL and SECP, released under license GNU GPL-3 using the free programming language R.
This work extends the analysis of the generalized multifractality of critical eigenstates at the spin quantum Hall transition in two-dimensional disordered superconductors [J. F. Karcher et al, Annals of Physics, 435, 168584 (2021)]. A mapping to classical percolation is developed for a certain set of generalized-multifractality observables. In this way, exact analytical results for the corresponding exponents are obtained. Furthermore, a general construction of positive pure-scaling eigenfunction observables is presented, which permits a very efficient numerical determination of scaling expon…
Recently it has been shown analytically that electric currents in a random diode network are distributed in a multifractal manner [O. Stenull and H. K. Janssen, Europhys. Lett. 55, 691 (2001)]. In the present work we investigate the multifractal properties of a random diode network at the critical point by numerical simulations. We analyze the currents running on a directed percolation cluster and confirm the field-theoretic predictions for the scaling behavior of moments of the current distribution. It is pointed out that a random diode network is a particularly good candidate for a possible …
We study the multifractal moments of the current distribution in randomly diluted resistor networks near the percolation treshold. When an external current is applied between to terminals $x$ and $x^\prime$ of the network, the $l$th multifractal moment scales as $M_I^{(l)} (x, x^\prime) \sim | x - x^\prime |^{ψ_l /ν}$, where $ν$ is the correlation length exponent of the isotropic percolation universality class. By applying our concept of master operators [Europhys. Lett. {\bf 51}, 539 (2000)] we calculate the family of multifractal exponents $\{ψ_l \}$ for $l \geq 0$ to two-loop order. We find…
The interacting lattice gas model is used to simulate fluid flow through an open percolating porous medium with the fluid entering at the source-end and leaving from the opposite end. The shape of the steady-state concentration profile and therefore the gradient field depends on the is found to scale with the porosity according to porosity p. The root mean square (rms) displacements of fluid and its constituents (tracers) show a drift power-law behavior, in the asymptotic regime. The flux current density is found to scale with the porosity according to an exponent near 1.7.
We suggest that the dynamics of stable viscous invasion fronts in porous media depends on the volume capacitance of the media. At high volume capacitance, our network simulations provide numerical evidence of a scaling relation between the front width and its velocity. In the low volume capacitance regime, we derive a new effective scaling supported by network simulations and is in agreement with previous experiments on imbibition in paper and collections of glass beads.
We propose a comprehensive theoretical description of hysteresis in capillary condensation of gases in mesoporous disordered materials. Applying mean-field density functional theory to a coarse-grained lattice-gas model, we show that the morphology of the hysteresis loops is influenced by out-of-equilibrium transitions that are different on filling and on draining. In particular, desorption may be associated to a depinning process and be percolation-like without explicit pore-blocking effects.
This article is a mini-review about electrical current flows in networks from the perspective of statistical physics. We briefly discuss analytical methods to solve the conductance of an arbitrary resistor network. We then turn to basic results related to percolation: namely, the conduction properties of a large random resistor network as the fraction of resistors is varied. We focus on how the conductance of such a network vanishes as the percolation threshold is approached from above. We also discuss the more microscopic current distribution within each resistor of a large network. At the pe…
The infiltration of a solute in a fractal porous medium is usually anomalous, but chemical reactions of the solute and that material may increase the porosity and affect the evolution of the infiltration. We study this problem in two- and three-dimensional lattices with randomly distributed porous sites at the critical percolation thresholds and with a border in contact with a reservoir of an aggressive solute. The solute infiltrates that medium by diffusion and the reactions with the impermeable sites produce new porous sites with a probability $r$, which is proportional to the ratio of react…
We study multifractality in a broad class of disordered systems which includes, e.g., the diluted x-y model. Using renormalized field theory we analyze the scaling behavior of cumulant averaged dynamical variables (in case of the x-y model the angles specifying the directions of the spins) at the percolation threshold. Each of the cumulants has its own independent critical exponent, i.e., there are infinitely many critical exponents involved in the problem. Working out the connection to the random resistor network, we determine these multifractal exponents to two-loop order. Depending on the s…
Multifractal scaling of critical wave functions at a disorder-driven (Anderson) localization transition is modified near boundaries of a sample. Here this effect is studied for the example of the spin quantum Hall plateau transition using the supersymmetry technique for disorder averaging. Upon mapping of the spin quantum Hall transition to the classical percolation problem with reflecting boundaries, a number of multifractal exponents governing wave function scaling near a boundary are obtained exactly. Moreover, additional exact boundary scaling exponents of the localization problem are extr…
Porous media are often modelled as systems of overlapping obstacles, which leads to the problem of two percolation thresholds in such systems, one for the porous matrix and the other one for the void space. Here we investigate these percolation thresholds in the model of overlapping squares or cubes of linear size $k>1$ randomly distributed on a regular lattice. We find that the percolation threshold of obstacles is a nonmonotonic function of $k$, whereas the percolation threshold of the void space is well approximated by a function linear in $1/k$. We propose a generalization of the excluded …
We obtain the harmonic measure of the hulls of critical percolation clusters and Ising-model Fortuin-Kastelyn clusters using a biased random-walk sampling technique which allows us to measure probabilities as small as 10^{-300}. We find the multifractal D(q) spectrum including regions of small and negative q. Our results for external hulls agree with Duplantier's theoretical predictions for D(q) and his exponent -23/24 for the harmonic measure probability distribution. For the complete hull, we find the probability decays with an exponent of -1 for both systems.
We study the critical behavior of various geometrical and transport properties of percolation in 6 dimensions. By employing field theory and renormalization group methods we analyze fluctuation induced logarithmic corrections to scaling up to and including the next to leading correction. Our study comprehends the percolation correlation function, i.e., the probability that 2 given points are connected, and some of the fractal masses describing percolation clusters. To be specific, we calculate the mass of the backbone, the red bonds and the shortest path. Moreover, we study key transport prope…
We study the transport properties of directed percolation clusters at the upper critical dimension $d_{c} = 4+1$, where critical fluctuations induce logarithmic corrections to the leading (mean-field) scaling behavior. Employing field theory and renormalization group methods we calculate these logarithmic corrections up to and including the next to leading correction for a variety of observables, viz. the connectivity, i.e., the probability that two given points are connected, the average two-point resistance and some of the fractal masses describing percolation clusters. Furthermore, we study…
We derive, from conformal invariance and quantum gravity, the multifractal spectrum f(alpha,c) of the harmonic measure (or electrostatic potential, or diffusion field) near any conformally invariant fractal in two dimensions, corresponding to a conformal field theory of central charge c. It gives the Hausdorff dimension of the set of boundary points where the potential varies with distance r to the fractal frontier as r^{alpha}. First examples are a Brownian frontier, a self-avoiding walk, or a percolation cluster. Potts, O(N) models, and the so-called SLE process are also considered. Higher m…

Both the deterministic and stochastic sandpile models are studied on the percolation backbone, a random fractal, generated on a square lattice in $2$-dimensions. In spite of the underline random structure of the backbone, the deterministic Bak Tang Wiesenfeld (BTW) model preserves its positive time auto-correlation and multifractal behaviour due to its complete toppling balance, whereas the critical properties of the stochastic sandpile model (SSM) still exhibits finite size scaling (FSS) as it exhibits on the regular lattices. Analysing the topography of the avalanches, various scaling relati…
Descriptors that characterize the geometry and topology of the pore space of porous media are intimately linked to their transport properties. We quantify such descriptors, including pore-size functions and the critical pore radius $δ_c$, for four different models: maximally random jammed sphere packings, overlapping spheres, equilibrium hard spheres, and inherent structures of the quantizer energy. For precise estimates of the percolation thresholds, we use a strict relation of the void percolation around sphere configurations to weighted bond percolation on the corresponding Voronoi networks…
Repeated local measurements of quantum many body systems can induce a phase transition in their entanglement structure. These measurement-induced phase transitions (MIPTs) have been studied for various types of dynamics, yet most cases yield quantitatively similar values of the critical exponents, making it unclear if there is only one underlying universality class. Here, we directly probe the properties of the conformal field theories governing these MIPTs using a numerical transfer-matrix method, which allows us to extract the effective central charge, as well as the first few low-lying scal…
In this paper we propose the Ising model to study the propagation of water in 2 dimensional (2D) petroleum reservoir in which each bond between its pores has the probability $p$ of being activated. We analyze the water movement pattern in porous media described by Darcy equations by focusing on its geometrical objects. Using Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) technique we numerically show that at $p=p_c\simeq 0.59$, this model lies within the Ising universality class with the diffusivity parameter $κ=3$ and the fractal dimension $D_f=\frac{11}{8}$. We introduce a self-organized critical model in …
Recently anomalous scaling properties of front broadening during spontaneous imbibition of water in Vycor glass, a nano-porous medium, were reported: the mean height and the width of the propagating front increase with time $t$ both proportional to $t^{1/2}$. Here we propose a simple lattice imbibition model and elucidate quantitatively how the correlation range of the hydrostatic pressure and the disorder strength of the pore radii affect the scaling properties of the imbibition front. We introduce an effective tension of liquid across neighboring pores, which depends on the aspect ratio of e…
In this paper we study the small-world network model of Watts and Strogatz, which mimics some aspects of the structure of networks of social interactions. We argue that there is one non-trivial length-scale in the model, analogous to the correlation length in other systems, which is well-defined in the limit of infinite system size and which diverges continuously as the randomness in the network tends to zero, giving a normal critical point in this limit. This length-scale governs the cross-over from large- to small-world behavior in the model, as well as the number of vertices in a neighborho…
