Spectral crowding of collective motional modes limits the fidelity of entangling interactions in trapped-ion quantum processors by inducing off-resonant coupling to spectator modes. We introduce a geometric-phase entangling interaction driven by a transverse, time-dependent structured-light force. By applying the force in a plane orthogonal to the optical propagation direction, we reduce the effects of spectral crowding while preserving single-ion addressing. The scheme is compatible with arbitrary qubit encodings, provided that the qubit states experience a differential AC Stark shift. We experimentally realise high-fidelity two-qubit gates with error rates below $5\times10^{-3}$ in ion crystals containing up to 12 ions confined within a single potential well. These results establish gradient-field light-shift gates as a scalable approach to high-fidelity entangling generation in spectrally crowded trapped-ion systems.
The realization of robust universal quantum computation with any platform ultimately requires both the coherent storage of quantum information and (at least) one entangling operation between individual elements. The use of continuous-variable bosonic modes as the quantum element is a promising route to preserve the coherence of quantum information against naturally-occurring errors. However, operations between bosonic modes can be challenging. In analogy to the exchange interaction between discrete-variable spin systems, the exponential-SWAP unitary [$\mathbf{U}_{\mathrm{E}}\left(θ_c\right)$] …
Entangling gates in trapped-ion quantum computing have primarily targeted stationary ions with initial motional distributions that are thermal and close to the ground state. However, future systems will likely incur significant non-thermal excitation due to, e.g., ion transport, longer operational times, and increased spatial extent of the trap array. In this paper, we analyze the impact of such coherent motional excitation on entangling-gate error by performing simulations of Molmer-Sorenson (MS) gates on a pair of trapped-ion qubits with both thermal and coherent excitation present in a shar…
Fast entangling gates have been proposed for trapped ions that are orders of magnitude faster than current implementations. We present here a detailed analysis of the challenges involved in performing a successful fast gate. We show that the RWA is a stable approximation with respect to pulse numbers: the timescale on which we can neglect terms rotating at the atomic frequency is negligibly affected by the number of pulses in the fast gate. In contrast, we show that the laser pulse instability does give rise to a pulse-number dependent effect; the fast gate infidelity is compounded with the nu…
We present a new and simplified two-qubit randomized benchmarking procedure that operates only in the symmetric subspace of a pair of qubits and is well suited for benchmarking trapped-ion systems. By performing benchmarking only in the symmetric subspace, we drastically reduce the experimental complexity, number of gates required, and run time. The protocol is demonstrated on trapped ions using collective single-qubit rotations and the Molmer-Sorenson (MS) interaction to estimate an entangling gate error of $2(1) \times 10^{-3}$. We analyze the expected errors in the MS gate and find that pop…
We implement a two-qubit entangling Mølmer-Sørensen interaction by transporting two co-trapped $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}^{+}$ ions through a stationary, bichromatic optical beam within a surface-electrode Paul trap. We describe a procedure for achieving a constant Doppler shift during the transport which uses fine temporal adjustment of the moving confinement potential. The fixed interaction duration of the ions transported through the laser beam as well as the dynamically changing ac Stark shift require alterations to the calibration procedures used for a stationary gate. We use the interaction to pr…
We introduce a scheme to entangle Rydberg ions in a linear ion crystal, using the high electric polarizability of the Rydberg electronic states in combination with mutual Coulomb coupling of ions that establishes common modes of motion. After laser-initialization of ions to a superposition of ground- and Rydberg-state, the entanglement operation is driven purely by applying a voltage pulse that shuttles the ion crystal back and forth. This operation can achieve entanglement on a sub-$μ$s timescale, more than two orders of magnitude faster than typical gate operations driven by continuous-wave …
We propose and study ways speeding up of the entangling operations in the trapped ions system with high fidelity. First, we find a scheme to increase the speed of a two-qubit gate without the limitation of trap frequency, which was considered as the fundamental limit. Second, we study the fast gate scheme for entangling more than two qubits simultaneously. We apply the method of applying multiple frequency components on laser beams for the gate operations. In particular, in order to avoid infinite terms from the coupling to carrier transition, we focus on the phase-insensitive gate scheme here…
Entanglement is a fascinating feature of quantum mechanics and a key ingredient in most quantum information processing tasks. Yet the generation of entanglement is usually hampered by undesired dissipation owing to the inevitable coupling of a system with its environment. Here, we report an experiment on how to entangle two $^{13}$C nuclear spins via engineered dissipation in a nitrogen-vacancy system. We utilize the electron spin as an ancilla, and combine unitary processes together with optical pumping of the ancilla to implement the engineered dissipation and deterministically produce an en…
Generating quantum entanglement in large systems on time scales much shorter than the coherence time is key to powerful quantum simulation and computation. Trapped ions are among the most accurately controlled and best isolated quantum systems with low-error entanglement gates operated via the vibrational motion of a few-ion crystal within tens of microseconds. To exceed the level of complexity tractable by classical computers the main challenge is to realise fast entanglement operations in large ion crystals. The strong dipole-dipole interactions in polar molecule and Rydberg atom systems all…
We demonstrate Floquet engineering in a basic yet scalable 2D architecture of individually trapped and controlled ions. Local parametric modulations of detuned trapping potentials steer the strength of long-range inter-ion couplings and the related Peierls phase of the motional state. In our proof-of-principle, we initialize large coherent states and tune modulation parameters to control trajectories, directions and interferences of the phonon flow. Our findings open a new pathway for future Floquet-based trapped-ion quantum simulators targeting correlated topological phenomena and dynamical g…
We propose an optical scheme for generating entanglement between co-trapped identical or dissimilar alkaline earth atomic ions ($^{40}\text{Ca}^+$, $^{88}\text{Sr}^+$, $^{138}\text{Ba}^+$, $^{226}\text{Ra}^+$) which exhibits fundamental error rates below $10^{-4}$ and can be implemented with a broad range of laser wavelengths spanning from ultraviolet to infrared. We also discuss straightforward extensions of this technique to include the two lightest Group-2 ions ($\text{Be}^+$, $\text{Mg}^+$) for multispecies entanglement. The key elements of this wavelength-insensitive geometric phase gate …
We describe the optimal realization of entangling quantum gates for trapped ions mediated by a dissipative bus mode. With suitably shaped control pulses one can substantially decrease ion-phonon entanglement while maintaining the mediated interaction.
Ion trap is one of the most promising candidates for quantum computing. Current schemes mainly focus on a linear chain of up to about one hundred ions in a Paul trap. To further scale up the qubit number, one possible direction is to use 2D or 3D ion crystals (Wigner crystals). In these systems, ions are generally subjected to large micromotion due to the strong fast-oscillating electric field, which can significantly influence the performance of entangling gates. In this work, we develop an efficient numerical method to design high-fidelity entangling gates in a general 3D ion crystal. We pre…
We present a model for implementing fast entangling gates (${\sim}1~μ$s) with ultra-fast pulses in arbitrarily long ion chains, that requires low numbers of pulses and can be implemented with laser repetition rates well within experimental capability. We demonstrate that we are able to optimise pulse sequences that have theoretical fidelities above $99.99\%$ in arbitrarily long ion-chains, for laser repetition rates on the order of $100-300$~MHz. Notably, we find higher repetition rates are not required for gates in longer ion chains, which is in contrast to scaling analyses with other gate sc…
We study a class of entangling gates for trapped atomic ions and demonstrate the use of numeric optimization techniques to create a wide range of fast, error-robust gate constructions. Our approach introduces a framework for numeric optimization using individually addressed, amplitude and phase modulated controls targeting maximally and partially entangling operations on ion pairs, complete multi-ion registers, multi-ion subsets of large registers, and parallel operations within a single register. Our calculations and simulations demonstrate that the inclusion of modulation of the difference p…
Entangling gates are an essential component of quantum computers. However, generating high-fidelity gates, in a scalable manner, remains a major challenge in all quantum information processing platforms. Accordingly, improving the fidelity and robustness of these gates has been a research focus in recent years. In trapped ions quantum computers, entangling gates are performed by driving the normal modes of motion of the ion chain, generating a spin-dependent force. Even though there has been significant progress in increasing the robustness and modularity of these gates, they are still sensiti…
Large-scale digital quantum simulations require thousands of fundamental entangling gates to construct the simulated dynamics. Despite success in a variety of small-scale simulations, quantum information processing platforms have hitherto failed to demonstrate the combination of precise control and scalability required to systematically outmatch classical simulators. We analyse how fast gates could enable trapped-ion quantum processors to achieve the requisite scalability to outperform classical computers without error correction. We analyze the performance of a large-scale digital simulator, …
It is well established that the collective motion of ion crystals can be used as a quantum bus for multi-qubit entanglement. However, as the number of ions increases, it becomes difficult to directly entangle ions far apart and resolve all motional modes of the ion crystal. We introduce a scalable and flexible scheme for efficient entanglement between any pair of ions within a large ion chain, using an evenly distributed 50-ion crystal as an example. By performing amplitude and frequency modulation, we find high-fidelity pulse sequences that primarily drive a transverse motional mode with a wa…

In state-of-the-art quantum computing platforms, including superconducting qubits and trapped ions, imperfections in the 2-qubit entangling gates are the dominant contributions of error to system-wide performance. Recently, a novel 2-qubit parametric gate was proposed and demonstrated with superconducting transmon qubits. This gate is activated through RF modulation of the transmon frequency and can be operated at an amplitude where the performance is first-order insensitive to flux-noise. In this work we experimentally validate the existence of this AC sweet spot and demonstrate its dependenc…
A major obstacle in the way of practical quantum computing is achieving scalable and robust high-fidelity entangling gates. To this end, quantum control has become an essential tool, as it can make the entangling interaction resilient to sources of noise. Nevertheless, it may be difficult to identify an appropriate quantum control technique for a particular need given the breadth of work pertaining to robust entanglement. To this end, we attempt to consolidate the literature by providing a non-exhaustive summary and critical analysis. The quantum control methods are separated into two categori…
The conventional approach to perform two-qubit gate operations in trapped ions relies on exciting the ions on motional sidebands with laser light, which is an inherently slow process. One way to implement a fast entangling gate protocol requires a suitable pulsed laser to increase the gate speed by orders of magnitude. However, the realization of such a fast entangling gate operation presents a big technical challenge, as such the required laser source is not available off-the-shelf. For this, we have engineered an ultrafast entangling gate source based on a frequency comb. The source generate…
The realization of high fidelity quantum gates in a multi-qubit system, with a typical target set at 99.9%, is a critical requirement for the implementation of fault-tolerant quantum computation. To reach this level of fidelity, one needs to carefully analyze the noises and imperfections in the experimental system and optimize the gate operations to mitigate their effects. Here, we consider one of the leading experimental systems for the fault-tolerant quantum computation, ions in an anharmonic linear Paul trap, and optimize entangling quantum gates using segmented laser pulses with the assist…
Quantum computers are expected to achieve a significant speed-up over classical computers in solving a range of computational problems. Chains of ions held in a linear Paul trap are a promising platform for constructing such quantum computers, due to their long coherence times and high quality of control. Here we report on the construction of a small, five-qubit, universal quantum computer using $^{88}\text{Sr}^{+}$ ions in an RF trap. All basic operations, including initialization, quantum logic operations, and readout, are performed with high fidelity. Selective two-qubit and single-qubit ga…
Trapped-ion quantum computers have demonstrated high-performance gate operations in registers of about ten qubits. However, scaling up and parallelizing quantum computations with long one-dimensional (1D) ion strings is an outstanding challenge due to the global nature of the motional modes of the ions which mediate qubit-qubit couplings. Here, we devise methods to implement scalable and parallel entangling gates by using engineered localized phonon modes. We propose to tailor such localized modes by tuning the local potential of individual ions with programmable optical tweezers. Localized mo…
To achieve scalable quantum computing, improving entangling-gate fidelity and its implementation-efficiency are of utmost importance. We present here a linear method to construct provably power-optimal entangling gates on an arbitrary pair of qubits on a trapped-ion quantum computer. This method leverages simultaneous modulation of amplitude, frequency, and phase of the beams that illuminate the ions and, unlike the state of the art, does not require any search in the parameter space. The linear method is extensible, enabling stabilization against external parameter fluctuations to an arbitrar…

We present a method that combines continuous and pulsed microwave radiation patterns to achieve robust interactions among hyperfine trapped ions placed in a magnetic field gradient. More specifically, our scheme displays continuous microwave drivings with modulated phases, phase flips, and $π$ pulses. This leads to high-fidelity entangling gates which are resilient against magnetic field fluctuations, changes on the microwave amplitudes, and crosstalk effects. Our protocol runs with arbitrary values of microwave power, which includes the technologically relevant case of low microwave intensiti…
Constructing a large scale ion trap quantum processor will require entangling gate operations that are robust in the presence of noise and experimental imperfection. We experimentally demonstrate how a new type of Mølmer-Sørensen gate protects against infidelity caused by heating of the motional mode used during the gate. Furthermore, we show how the same technique simultaneously provides significant protection against slow fluctuations and mis-sets in the secular frequency. Since this parameter sensitivity is worsened in cases where the ions are not ground state cooled, our method provides a …
