Developing measures of quantum ergodicity and chaos stands as a foundational task in the study of quantum many-body systems. In this work, we propose metrics for these effects based on Hamiltonian learning that unify multiple advantages of existing metrics. In particular, we show how ergodicity and chaos improve the robustness of Hamiltonian learning to small errors and furthermore demonstrate that this robustness can be used as a metric for such phenomena. We analytically and numerically show that our metrics not only distinguish between integrable and ergodic regimes in various spin chains but also quantify chaos and ergodicity, allowing us to locate regions of parameter space displaying maximal ergodicity and maximal sensitivity to local perturbations. Our approach not only provides conceptual ways to study quantum chaos and ergodicity but also presents viable experimental methods for quantum simulators.

The hallmark of superfluidity is the appearance of metastable flow-states that carry a persistent circulating current. Considering Bose-Hubbard superfluid rings, we clarify the role of "quantum chaos" in this context. We show that the standard Landau and Bogoliubov superfluidity criteria fail for such low-dimensional circuits. We also discuss the feasibility for a coherent operation of a SQUID-like setup. Finally, we address the manifestation of the strong many-body dynamical localization effect.
We study the Bohmian dynamics of a large class of bipartite systems of non-ideal qubit systems, by modifying the basic physical parameters of an ideal two-qubit system, made of coherent states of the quantum harmonic oscillator. First we study the case of coherent states with truncated energy levels and large amplitudes. Then we study non-truncated coherent states but with small amplitudes and finally a combination of the above cases. In all cases we find that the chaotic Bohmian trajectories are approximately ergodic. We also study the number and the spatial arrangement of the nodal points of…
In a classically chaotic system that is ergodic, any trajectory will be arbitrarily close to any point of the available phase space after a long time, filling it uniformly. Using Born's rules to connect quantum states with probabilities, one might then expect that all quantum states in the chaotic regime should be uniformly distributed in phase space. This simplified picture was shaken by the discovery of quantum scarring, where some eigenstates are concentrated along unstable periodic orbits. Despite of that, it is widely accepted that most eigenstates of chaotic models are indeed ergodic. Ou…
Ergodicity breaking is observed in the blockade regime of Rydberg atoms arrays, in the form of low entanglement eigenstates known as scars, which fail to thermalize. The signature of these states persists in periodically driven systems, where they coexist with an extensive number of chaotic states. Here we investigate a quantum cellular automaton based on the classical rule that updates a site if its two neighbors are in the lower state. We show that the breaking of ergodicity extends to chaotic states. The dynamical breaking of ergodicity is controlled by chiral quasiparticle excitations whic…
Long-time average behavior of quantum correlations in a multi-qubit system, collectively modeled as a kicked top, is addressed here. The behavior of dynamical generation of quantum correlations such as entanglement, discord, concurrence, as previously studied, and Bell correlation function and tangle, as identified in this study, is a function of initially localized coherent states. Their long-time average reproduces coarse-grained classical phase space structures of the kicked top which contrast, often starkly, chaotic and regular regions. Apart from providing numerical evidence of such corre…
After a brief historical review of ergodicity and mixing in dynamics, particularly in quantum dynamics, we introduce definitions of quantum ergodicity and mixing using the structure of the system's energy levels and spacings. Our definitions are consistent with usual understanding of ergodicity and mixing. Two parameters concerning the degeneracy in energy levels and spacings are introduced. They are computed for right triangular billiards and the results indicate a very close relation between quantum ergodicity (mixing) and quantum chaos. At the end, we argue that, besides ergodicity and mixi…
We study in detail the onset of chaos and the probability measures formed by individual Bohmian trajectories in entangled states of two-qubit systems for various degrees of entanglement. The qubit systems consist of coherent states of 1-d harmonic oscillators with irrational frequencies. In weakly entangled states chaos is manifested through the sudden jumps of the Bohmian trajectories between successive Lissajous-like figures. These jumps are succesfully interpreted by the `nodal point-X-point complex' mechanism. In strongly entangled states, the chaotic form of the Bohmian trajectories is ma…
We study the dynamical generation of entanglement as a signature of chaos in a system of periodically kicked coupled-tops, where chaos and entanglement arise from the same physical mechanism. The long-time averaged entanglement as a function of the position of an initially localized wave packet very closely correlates with the classical phase space surface of section -- it is nearly uniform in the chaotic sea, and reproduces the detailed structure of the regular islands. The uniform value in the chaotic sea is explained by the random state conjecture. As classically chaotic dynamics take local…
Unlike classical system, understanding ergodicity from phase space mixing remains unclear for interacting quantum systems due to the absence of phase space trajectories. By considering an interacting spin model known as kicked coupled top, we elucidate the manifestation of phase space dynamics on local ergodic behavior of its quantum counterpart and quantum scarring phenomena. A transition to chaos occurs by increasing the kicking strength, and in the mixed phase space, the islands of regular motions within the chaotic sea clearly exhibit deviation from ergodicity, which we quantify from entan…
We study the time evolution operator in a family of local quantum circuits with random fields in a fixed direction. We argue that the presence of quantum chaos implies that at large times the time evolution operator becomes effectively a random matrix in the many-body Hilbert space. To quantify this phenomenon we compute analytically the squared magnitude of the trace of the evolution operator -- the generalised spectral form factor -- and compare it with the prediction of Random Matrix Theory (RMT). We show that for the systems under consideration the generalised spectral form factor can be e…
Characterizing states of matter through the lens of their ergodic properties is a fascinating new direction of research. In the quantum realm, the many-body localization (MBL) was proposed to be the paradigmatic ergodicity breaking phenomenon, which extends the concept of Anderson localization to interacting systems. At the same time, random matrix theory has established a powerful framework for characterizing the onset of quantum chaos and ergodicity (or the absence thereof) in quantum many-body systems. Here we numerically study the spectral statistics of disordered interacting spin chains, …
Quantum devices, such as quantum simulators, quantum annealers, and quantum computers, may be exploited to solve problems beyond what is tractable with classical computers. This may be achieved as the Hilbert space available to perform such `calculations' is far larger than that which may be classically simulated. In practice, however, quantum devices have imperfections, which may limit the accessibility to the whole Hilbert space. We thus determine that the dimension of the space of quantum states that are available to a quantum device is a meaningful measure of its functionality, though unfo…
We consider one dimensional quantum circuits of the brickwork type, where the fundamental quantum gate is dual unitary. Such models are solvable: the dynamical correlation functions of the infinite temperature ensemble can be computed exactly. We review various existing constructions for dual unitary gates and we supplement them with new ideas in a number of cases. We discuss connections with various topics in physics and mathematics, including quantum information theory, tensor networks for the AdS/CFT correspondence (holographic error correcting codes), classical combinatorial designs (ortho…
We study the statistical and dynamical properties of the quantum triangle map, whose classical counterpart can exhibit ergodic and mixing dynamics, but is never chaotic. Numerical results show that ergodicity is a sufficient condition for spectrum and eigenfunctions to follow the prediction of Random Matrix Theory, even though the underlying classical dynamics is not chaotic. On the other hand, dynamical quantities such as the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) and the number of harmonics, exhibit a growth rate vanishing in the semiclassical limit, in agreement with the fact that classical …
We study thermalization in many-body quantum systems locally coupled to an external bath. It is shown that quantum chaotic systems do thermalize, that is, they exhibit relaxation to an invariant ergodic state which, in the bulk, is well approximated by the grand canonical state. Moreover, the resulting ergodic state in the bulk does not depend on the details of the baths. On the other hand, for integrable systems the invariant state does depend on the bath and is different from the grand canonical state.
We introduce a theory for the stability of a condensate in an optical lattice. We show that the understanding of the stability-to-ergodicity transition involves the fusion of monodromy and chaos theory. Specifically, the condensate can decay if a connected chaotic pathway to depletion is formed, which requires swap of seperatrices in phase-space.
In the past decades, it was recognized that quantum chaos, which is essential for the emergence of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, manifests itself in the effective description of the eigenstates of chaotic Hamiltonians through random matrix ensembles and the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Standard measures of chaos in quantum many-body systems are level statistics and the spectral form factor. In this work, we show that the norm of the adiabatic gauge potential, the generator of adiabatic deformations between eigenstates, serves as a much more sensitive measure of quantum cha…
The experimental realization of successive non-demolition measurements on single microscopic systems brings up the question of ergodicity in Quantum Mechanics (QM). We investigate whether time averages over one realization of a single system are related to QM averages over an ensemble of similarly prepared systems. We adopt a generalization of von Neumann model of measurement, coupling the system to $N$ "probes" --with a strength that is at our disposal-- and detecting the latter. The model parallels the procedure followed in experiments on Quantum Electrodynamic cavities. The modification of …
We study the ergodic -- non-ergodic transition in a generalized Dicke model with independent co- and counter rotating light-matter coupling terms. By studying level statistics, the average ratio of consecutive level spacings, and the quantum butterfly effect (out-of-time correlation) as a dynamical probe, we show that the ergodic -- non-ergodic transition in the Dicke model is a consequence of the proximity to the integrable limit of the model when one of the couplings is set to zero. This can be interpreted as a hint for the existence of a quantum analogue of the classical Kolmogorov-Arnold-M…
We study the quantum dynamics of Josephson junction arrays. We find isolated groups of low-entanglement eigenstates, that persist even when the Josephson interaction is strong enough to destroy the organization of the spectrum in multiplets, and a perturbative description is no longer possible. These eigenstates provide a weak ergodicity breaking, and are reminiscent of the quantum scars. Due to the presence of these eigenstates, initializing with a charge-density-wave state, the system does not thermalize and the charge-density-wave order persists for long times. Considering global ergodicity…

We consider an interacting collective spin model known as coupled top (CT), exhibiting a rich variety of phenomena related to quantum transitions, ergodicity, and formation of quantum scars, discussed in [Phys. Rev. E 102, 020101(R) (2020)]. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the different type of transitions in CT model, and find their connection with the underlying collective spin dynamics. Apart from the quantum scarring phenomena, we also identify another source of deviation from ergodicity due to the presence of non-ergodic multifractal states. The degree of ergodicity of the…
Using a model Hamiltonian for a single-mode electromagnetic field interacting with a nonlinear medium, we show that quantum expectation values of subsystem observables can exhibit remarkably diverse ergodic properties even when the dynamics of the total system is regular. The time series of the mean photon number is studied over a range of values of the ratio of the strength $γ$ of the nonlinearity to that of the inter-mode coupling $g$. We obtain the power spectrum, estimate the embedding dimension of the reconstructed phase space and the maximal Liapunov exponent $λ_{\rm max}$, and find the …
This paper is a physicist's review of the major conceptual issues concerning the problem of spectral universality in quantum systems. Here we present a unified, graph-based view of all archetypical models of such universality (billiards, particles in random media, interacting spin or fermion systems). We find phenomenological relations between the onset of ergodicity (Gaussian-random delocalization of eigenstates) and the structure of the appropriate graphs, and we construct a heuristic picture of summing trajectories on graphs that describes why a generic interacting system should be ergodic.…

We consider a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) formed by a binary mixture of ultracold atoms to investigate the manifestation of coherent collective dynamics on ergodicity and quantum scars, unfolding the connection between them. By tuning the inter- and intra-species interaction, we demonstrate a rich variety of Josephson dynamics and transitions between them, which plays a crucial role in controlling the overall ergodic behavior. The signature of underlying classicality is revealed from the entanglement spectrum, which also elucidates the formation of quantum scars of unstable steady states and…
We study a generic model of quantum computer, composed of many qubits coupled by short-range interaction. Above a critical interqubit coupling strength, quantum chaos sets in, leading to quantum ergodicity of the computer eigenstates. In this regime the noninteracting qubit structure disappears, the eigenstates become complex and the operability of the computer is destroyed. Despite the fact that the spacing between multi-qubit states drops exponentially with the number of qubits $n$, we show that the quantum chaos border decreases only linearly with $n$. This opens a broad parameter region wh…
We explore quantum phase transitions using two probes of quantum chaos: out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) and the $r$-parameter obtained from the level spacing statistics. In particular, we address $p$-spin models associated with quantum annealing or reverse annealing. Quantum annealing triggers first-order or second-order phase transitions, which is crucial for the performance of quantum devices. We find that the time-averaging OTOCs for the ground state and the average $r$-parameter change behavior around the corresponding transition points, diagnosing the phase transition. Furthermore, …
We study the phase space of periodically modulated gravitational cavity by means of quantum recurrence phenomena. We report that the quantum recurrences serve as a tool to connect phase space of the driven system with spectrum in quantum domain. With the help of quantum recurrences we investigate the quasi-energy spectrum of the system for a certain fixed modulation strength. In addition, we study transition of spectrum from discrete to continuum as a function of modulation strength.
Chaos and ergodicity are the cornerstones of statistical physics and thermodynamics. While classically even small systems like a particle in a two-dimensional cavity, can exhibit chaotic behavior and thereby relax to a microcanonical ensemble, quantum systems formally can not. Recent theoretical breakthroughs and, in particular, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) however indicate that quantum systems can also thermalize. In fact ETH provided us with a framework connecting microscopic models and macroscopic phenomena, based on the notion of highly entangled quantum states. Such ther…
We compare the entire classical and quantum evolutions of the Dicke model in its regular and chaotic domains. This is a paradigmatic interacting spin-boson model of great experimental interest. By studying the classical and quantum survival probabilities of initial coherent states, we identify features of the long-time dynamics that are purely quantum and discuss their impact on the equilibration times. We show that the ratio between the quantum and classical asymptotic values of the survival probability serves as a metric to determine the proximity to a separatrix in the regular regime and to…
The standard generic quantum computer model is studied analytically and numerically and the border for emergence of quantum chaos, induced by imperfections and residual inter-qubit couplings, is determined. This phenomenon appears in an isolated quantum computer without any external decoherence. The onset of quantum chaos leads to quantum computer hardware melting, strong quantum entropy growth and destruction of computer operability. The time scales for development of quantum chaos and ergodicity are determined. In spite the fact that this phenomenon is rather dangerous for quantum computing …
We investigate many body localization in the presence of a single particle mobility edge. By considering an interacting deterministic model with an incommensurate potential in one dimension we find that the single particle mobility edge in the noninteracting system leads to a many body mobility edge in the corresponding interacting system for certain parameter regimes. Using exact diagonalization, we probe the mobility edge via energy resolved entanglement entropy (EE) and study the energy resolved applicability (or failure) of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). Our numerical resu…
We propose that the size of an operator evolved under holographic renormalization group flow shall grow linearly with the scale and interpret this behavior as a manifestation of the saturation of the chaos bound. To test this conjecture, we study the operator growth in two different toy models. The first is a MERA-like tensor network built from a random unitary circuit with the operator size defined using the integrated out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC). The second model is an error-correcting code of perfect tensors, and the operator size is computed using the number of single-site physic…
Ergodicity and chaos play an integral role in the dynamical behavior of many-particle systems and are crucial to the formulation of statistical mechanics. Still, a general understanding of how randomness and chaos emerge in the dynamical evolution of closed quantum systems remains elusive. Here, we develop an experimental platform for the realization of canonical quantum chaotic Hamiltonians based on quantum simulation with synthetic lattices. We map the angular momentum projection states of an effective quantum spin onto the linear momentum states of a $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate, whic…
