Galaxy mergers have long been proposed as a mechanism for funneling gas toward galactic centres, potentially triggering accretion onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and igniting active galactic nuclei (AGN). While simulations often support this scenario, observational studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the AGN-merger connection. In this study, we analyze 31 galaxies from cosmological zoom-in simulations spanning redshifts $0.5 < z < 3$. We identify mergers using detailed merger trees based on six-dimensional dark matter particle information and identify AGN activity through SMBH accretion histories. To bridge the gap between simulations and observations, we generate mock JWST-like images and extract non-parametric morphological parameters. Employing a $k$-nearest neighbours (KNN) classifier in a five-dimensional space (four morphological parameters and redshift), we identify mergers in the mock-observed dataset. Our analysis reveals a statistically significant enhancement of AGN activity in merging systems, particularly at lower redshifts ($0.5 < z < 0.9$), where central gas reservoirs are more depleted. This supports the view that mergers contribute more significantly to AGN triggering in environments with low internal gas reservoirs, while their impact may be less pronounced in gas-rich systems. However, when relying solely on morphological classifications from mock observations, the observed AGN-merger connection weakens, especially at higher redshifts. This underscores the challenges in detecting merger-induced AGN activity observationally and highlights the importance of combining simulations with realistic mock observations to fully understand the AGN-merger relationship.
We present and analyze a series of synthetic galaxy survey fields based on the IllustrisTNG Simulation suite. With the Illustris public data release and JupyterLab service, we generated a set of twelve lightcone catalogs covering areas from 5 to 365 square arcminutes, similar to several JWST Cycle 1 programs, including JADES, CEERS, PRIMER, and NGDEEP. From these catalogs, we queried the public API to generate simple mock images in a series of broadband filters used by JWST-NIRCam and the Hubble Space Telescope cameras. This procedure generates wide-area simulated mosaic images that can suppor…
We present a mock image catalogue of ~100,000 MUV=-22.5 to -19.6 mag galaxies at z=7-12 from the BlueTides cosmological simulation. We create mock images of each galaxy with the James Webb (JWST), Hubble, Roman, and Euclid Space Telescopes, as well as Subaru, and VISTA, with a range of near- and mid-infrared filters. We perform photometry on the mock images to estimate the success of these instruments for detecting high-z galaxies. We predict that JWST will have unprecedented power in detecting high-z galaxies, with a 95% completeness limit at least 2.5 magnitudes fainter than VISTA and Subaru…
We present an original phenomenological model to describe the evolution of galaxy number counts, morphologies, and spectral energy distributions across a wide range of redshifts (0.2<z<15) and stellar masses [Log10 M/Msun >6]. Our model follows observed mass and luminosity functions of both star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and reproduces the redshift evolution of colors, sizes, star-formation and chemical properties of the observed galaxy population. Unlike other existing approaches, our model includes a self-consistent treatment of stellar and photoionized gas emission and dust attenuatio…

JWST observations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission provide some of the deepest and highest resolution views of the cold interstellar medium (ISM) in nearby galaxies. If PAHs are well mixed with the atomic and molecular gas and illuminated by the average diffuse interstellar radiation field, PAH emission may provide an approximately linear, high resolution, high sensitivity tracer of diffuse gas surface density. We present a pilot study that explores using PAH emission in this way based on MIRI observations of IC 5332, NGC 628, NGC 1365, and NGC 7496 from the PHANGS-JWST Treasu…
We present James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Mid-InfraRed Instrument (MIRI) integral-field spectroscopy of the nearby merging, luminous infrared galaxy, NGC 7469. This galaxy hosts a Seyfert type-1.5 nucleus, a highly ionized outflow, and a bright, circumnuclear star-forming ring, making it an ideal target to study AGN feedback in the local Universe. We take advantage of the high spatial/spectral resolution of JWST/MIRI to isolate the star-forming regions surrounding the central active nucleus and study the properties of the dust and warm molecular gas on ~100 pc scales. The starburst ring exh…

Tracing the earliest stages of star and cluster formation in 19 nearby galaxies with PHANGS-JWST and HST: compact 3.3 $μ$m PAH emitters and their relation to the optical census of star clusters
The physical link of the star formation-AGN activities is analyzed from multiwavelength energy distributions of distant radiogalaxies (RG) with the help of two models: the new evolutionary code PEGASE.3 with dust predictions and the Siebenmorgen's AGN model, with the aim to to disentangle the farIR dust emissions from respectively interstellar medium and torus of RGs. Best-fits of the HST-Spitzer-Herschel (UV-to-IR) observations of the 3CR RGs with libraries of hybrid SED templates identify three components (AGN, old galaxy and young starburst) tracing the relation of starburst-AGN luminositie…
We present an algorithm to self-consistently generate mock weak gravitational lensing convergence fields and galaxy distributions in redshift space. We generate three-dimensional cosmic density fields that follow a log-normal distribution, and ray-trace them to produce convergence maps. As we generate the galaxy distribution from the same density fields in a manner consistent with ray-tracing, the galaxy-convergence cross-power spectrum measured from the mock agrees with the theoretical expectation with high precision. We use this simulation to forecast the quality of galaxy-shear cross-correl…
We compare mid-infrared (mid-IR), extinction-corrected H$α$, and CO (2-1) emission at 70--160 pc resolution in the first four PHANGS-JWST targets. We report correlation strengths, intensity ratios, and power law fits relating emission in JWST's F770W, F1000W, F1130W, and F2100W bands to CO and H$α$. At these scales, CO and H$α$ each correlate strongly with mid-IR emission, and these correlations are each stronger than the one relating CO to H$α$ emission. This reflects that mid-IR emission simultaneously acts as a dust column density tracer, leading to the good match with the molecular gas-tra…
Next generation observatories will enable us to study the first billion years of our Universe in unprecedented detail. Foremost among these are 21-cm interferometry with the HERA and the SKA, and high-$z$ galaxy observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Taking a basic galaxy model, in which we allow the star formation rates and ionizing escape fractions to have a power-law dependence on halo mass with an exponential turnover below some threshold, we quantify how observations from these instruments can be used to constrain the astrophysics of high-$z$ galaxies. For this purpose, …

Galaxy clustering measurements can be used to constrain many aspects of galaxy evolution, including galaxy host halo masses, satellite quenching efficiencies, and merger rates. We simulate JWST galaxy clustering measurements at z$\sim$4$-$10 by utilizing mock galaxy samples produced by an empirical model, the UniverseMachine. We also adopt the survey footprints and typical depths of the planned joint NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observation program planned for Cycle 1 to generate realistic JWST survey realizations and to model high-redshift galaxy selection completeness. We find that gal…
The intrinsic alignment of galaxies is an important systematic effect in weak-lensing surveys, which can affect the derived cosmological parameters. One direct way to distinguish different alignment models and quantify their effects on the measurement is to produce mocked weak-lensing surveys. In this work, we use full-sky ray-tracing technique to produce mock images of galaxies from the ELUCID $N$-body simulation run with the WMAP9 cosmology. In our model we assume that the shape of central elliptical galaxy follows that of the dark matter halo, and spiral galaxy follows the halo spin. Using …
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is expected to observe galaxies at $z>10$ that are presently inaccessible. Here, we use a self-consistent empirical model, the UniverseMachine, to generate mock galaxy catalogues and lightcones over the redshift range $z=0-15$. These data include realistic galaxy properties (stellar masses, star formation rates, and UV luminosities), galaxy-halo relationships, and galaxy-galaxy clustering. Mock observables are also provided for different model parameters spanning observational uncertainties at $z<10$. We predict that Cycle 1 JWST surveys will very likely d…
The bright emission from high-redshift quasars completely conceals their host galaxies in the rest-frame ultraviolet/optical, with detection of the hosts in these wavelengths eluding even the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) using detailed point spread function (PSF) modelling techniques. In this study we produce mock images of a sample of z=7 quasars extracted from the BlueTides simulation, and apply Markov Chain Monte Carlo-based PSF modelling to determine the detectability of their host galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). While no statistically significant detections are made w…

We compare embedded young massive star clusters (YMCs) to (sub-)millimeter line observations tracing the excitation and dissociation of molecular gas in the starburst ring of NGC 1365. This galaxy hosts one of the strongest nuclear starbursts and richest populations of YMCs within 20 Mpc. Here we combine near-/mid-IR PHANGS-JWST imaging with new ALMA multi-J CO (1-0, 2-1 and 4-3) and [CI](1-0) mapping, which we use to trace CO excitation via R42 = I_CO(4-3)/I_CO(2-1) and R21 = I_CO(2-1)/I_CO(1-0) and dissociation via RCICO = I_[CI](1-0)/I_CO(2-1) at 330 pc resolution. We find that the gas flow…
The NIRCam instrument on the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will offer an unprecedented view of the most distant galaxies. In preparation for future deep NIRCam extragalactic surveys, it is crucial to understand the color selection of high-redshift galaxies using the Lyman dropout technique. To that end, we have used the JAdes extraGalactic Ultradeep Artificial Realizations (JAGUAR) mock catalog to simulate a series of extragalactic surveys with realistic noise estimates. This enables us to explore different color selections and their impact on the number density of recovered high-…
We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift $5<z<12$ galaxies through extensive image simulations of accepted JWST programs such as CEERS in the EGS field and HUDF GTO. We introduce complete samples of $\sim300,000$ galaxies with stellar masses $\log(M_*/M_\odot)>6$ and redshifts $0<z<15$, as well as galactic stars, into realistic mock NIRCam, MIRI and HST images to properly describe the impact of source blending. We extract the photometry of the detected sources as in re…

We present the Cardinal mock galaxy catalogs, a new version of the Buzzard simulation that has been updated to support ongoing and future cosmological surveys, including DES, DESI, and LSST. These catalogs are based on a one-quarter sky simulation populated with galaxies out to a redshift of $z=2.35$ to a depth of $m_{\rm{r}}=27$. Compared to the Buzzard mocks, the Cardinal mocks include an updated subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) model that considers orphan galaxies and includes mass-dependent scatter between galaxy luminosity and halo properties. This model can simultaneously fit galaxy clu…

We present new estimates of AGN accretion and star-formation luminosity in galaxies obtained for the local 12-$μ$m sample of Seyfert galaxies (12MGS), by performing a detailed broad-band spectral energy distribution (SED) decomposition including the emission of stars, dust heated by star formation and a possible AGN dusty torus. Thanks to the availability of data from the X-rays to the sub-millimetre, we constrain and test the contribution of the stellar, AGN and star-formation components to the SEDs. The availability of Spitzer-IRS low resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectra is crucial to co…
