We present a new prospective analysis of deep multi-band imaging with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this work, we investigate the recovery of high-redshift $5<z<12$ galaxies through extensive image simulations of accepted JWST programs such as CEERS in the EGS field and HUDF GTO. We introduce complete samples of $\sim300,000$ galaxies with stellar masses $\log(M_*/M_\odot)>6$ and redshifts $0<z<15$, as well as galactic stars, into realistic mock NIRCam, MIRI and HST images to properly describe the impact of source blending. We extract the photometry of the detected sources as in real images and estimate the physical properties of galaxies through spectral energy distribution fitting. We find that the photometric redshifts are primarily limited by the availability of blue-band and near-infrared medium-band imaging. The stellar masses and star-formation rates are recovered within $0.25$ and $0.3$ dex respectively, for galaxies with accurate photometric redshifts. Brown dwarfs contaminating the $z>5$ galaxy samples can be reduced to $<0.01$ arcmin$^{-2}$ with a limited impact on galaxy completeness. We investigate multiple high-redshift galaxy selection techniques and find the best compromise between completeness and purity at $5<z<10$ using the full redshift posterior probability distributions. In the EGS field, the galaxy completeness remains higher than $50\%$ for $m_\text{UV}<27.5$ sources at all redshifts, and the purity is maintained above $80$ and $60\%$ at $z\leq7$ and $10$ respectively. The faint-end slope of the galaxy UV luminosity function is recovered with a precision of $0.1-0.25$, and the cosmic star-formation rate density within $0.1$ dex. We argue in favor of additional observing programs covering larger areas to better constrain the bright end.

We present an original phenomenological model to describe the evolution of galaxy number counts, morphologies, and spectral energy distributions across a wide range of redshifts (0.2<z<15) and stellar masses [Log10 M/Msun >6]. Our model follows observed mass and luminosity functions of both star-forming and quiescent galaxies, and reproduces the redshift evolution of colors, sizes, star-formation and chemical properties of the observed galaxy population. Unlike other existing approaches, our model includes a self-consistent treatment of stellar and photoionized gas emission and dust attenuatio…

The upcoming launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in less than three years is certain to bring a revolution in our understanding of many area of astrophysics, with one of the key goals being galaxy evolution. As the first proposals will be due in a little over two years, the time is ripe to take a holistic look at the science goals which the community would wish to accomplish with this observatory. Contrary to our experiences with the Hubble Space Telescope, which has now operated successfully for over two decades due to several timely servicing missions, the lifetime of JWST is fin…

We present a new analysis of the potential power of deep, near-infrared, imaging surveys with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to improve our knowledge of galaxy evolution. In this work we properly simulate what can be achieved with realistic survey strategies, and utilise rigorous signal:noise calculations to calculate the resulting posterior constraints on the physical properties of galaxies. We explore a broad range of assumed input galaxy types (>20,000 models, including extremely dusty objects) across a wide redshift range (out to z~12), while at the same time considering a realistic…
The discovery both through spectroscopy and photometry of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters, and in Magellanic Clouds' massive intermediate-age and old clusters, has led to a major change in our views about the formation of these objects. To date, none of the proposed scenarios is able to explain quantitatively all chemical patterns observed in individual clusters, and an extension of the study of multiple populations to resolved extragalactic massive clusters beyond the Magellanic Clouds would be welcome, for it would enable to investigate and characterize the presenc…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the detection of optical emission lines in galaxies spanning a broad range of luminosities out to redshifts z>10. Measurements of key galaxy properties, such as star formation rate and metallicity, through these observations will provide unique insight into, e.g., the role of feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in regulating galaxy evolution, the co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies, the physical origin of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies and the contribution by star-forming galaxies to cosmic reionization. We pr…
The NIRCam instrument on the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will offer an unprecedented view of the most distant galaxies. In preparation for future deep NIRCam extragalactic surveys, it is crucial to understand the color selection of high-redshift galaxies using the Lyman dropout technique. To that end, we have used the JAdes extraGalactic Ultradeep Artificial Realizations (JAGUAR) mock catalog to simulate a series of extragalactic surveys with realistic noise estimates. This enables us to explore different color selections and their impact on the number density of recovered high-…
I present an overview of the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), a joint program of the JWST/NIRCam and NIRSpec Guaranteed Time Observations (GTO) teams involving 950 hours of observation. We will target two well-studied fields with excellent supporting data (e.g., from HST-CANDELS): GOODS-North and South, including the Ultra Deep Field. The science goal of JADES is to chart galaxy evolution at z > 2, and potentially out to z > 10, using the rest-frame optical and near-IR though observations from $\approx$ 1 - 5 $μ$m. Multi-colour NIRCam imaging with 9 filters will enable photomet…
We present JEMS (JWST Extragalactic Medium-band Survey), the first public medium-band imaging survey carried out using JWST/NIRCam and NIRISS. These observations use $\sim2μ$m and $\sim4μ$m medium-band filters (NIRCam F182M, F210M, F430M, F460M, F480M; and NIRISS F430M & F480M in parallel) over 15.6 square arcminutes in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF), thereby building on the deepest multi-wavelength public datasets available anywhere on the sky. We describe our science goals, survey design, NIRCam and NIRISS image reduction methods, and describe our first data release of the science-ready m…

We give an overview and describe the rationale, methods, and first results from NIRCam images of the JWST "Prime Extragalactic Areas for Reionization and Lensing Science" ("PEARLS") project. PEARLS uses up to eight NIRCam filters to survey several prime extragalactic survey areas: two fields at the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP); seven gravitationally lensing clusters; two high redshift proto-clusters; and the iconic backlit VV 191 galaxy system to map its dust attenuation. PEARLS also includes NIRISS spectra for one of the NEP fields and NIRSpec spectra of two high-redshift quasars. The main goal …

We present a series of new, publicly available mock catalogs of X-ray selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs), non-active galaxies, and clusters of galaxies. They are based on up-to-date observational results on the demographic of extragalactic X-ray sources and their extrapolations. These mocks reach fluxes below 1E-20 erg s-1 cm-2 in the 0.5-2 keV band, i.e., more than an order of magnitude below the predicted limits of future deep fields, and therefore represent an important tool for simulating extragalactic X-ray surveys with both current and future telescopes. We use our mocks to perform a …
The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) for the {\em James Webb Space Telescope} (JWST) will revolutionize our understanding of infrared stellar populations in the Local Volume. Using the rich {\em Spitzer}-IRS spectroscopic data-set and spectral classifications from the Surveying the Agents of Galaxy Evolution (SAGE)-Spectroscopic survey of over a thousand objects in the Magellanic Clouds, the Grid of Red supergiant and Asymptotic giant branch star ModelS ({\sc grams}), and the grid of YSO models by Robitaille et al. (2006), we calculate the expected flux-densities and colors in the MIRI broadband…
Until now, our knowledge of the extragalactic Universe at mid-IR wavelengths (> 5 microns) was limited to rare active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the brightest normal galaxies up to z~3. The advent of the JWST with its Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) will revolutionise the ability of the mid-IR regime as a key wavelength domain to probe the high-z Universe. In this work we present a first study of JWST MIRI 7.7 micron sources selected with > 3 sigma significance from the lensing cluster field SMACS J0723.3-7327. We model their spectral energy distribution fitting with 13 JWST and HST broad bands,…
A wealth of extragalactic populations completely missed at UV-optical wavelengths has been identified in the last decade, combining the deepest HST and Spitzer observations. These dark sources are thought to be very dusty and star-forming systems at 3<z<5, and major contributors to the stellar mass build up. JWST is now promising to detect such objects well beyond the end of the Epoch of Reionization. In this Letter we report an investigation of the deep JWST survey in the SMACS0723 cluster, analysing NIRCam and MIRI images. We search for sources in the F444W band that are undetected in the F2…

The James Webb Space Telescope will allow to spectroscopically study an unprecedented number of galaxies deep into the reionization era, notably by detecting [OIII] and H$β$ nebular emission lines. To efficiently prepare such observations, we photometrically select a large sample of galaxies at $z\sim8$ and study their rest-frame optical emission lines. Combining data from the GOODS Re-ionization Era wide-Area Treasury from Spitzer (GREATS) survey and from HST, we perform spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, using synthetic SEDs from a large grid of photoionization models. The deep Spit…

Increasingly powerful and multiplexed spectroscopic facilities promise detailed chemical abundance patterns for millions of resolved stars in galaxies beyond the Milky Way (MW). Here, we employ the Cramér-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB) to forecast the precision to which stellar abundances for metal-poor, low-mass stars outside the MW can be measured for 41 current (e.g., Keck, MMT, VLT, DESI) and planned (e.g., MSE, JWST, ELTs) spectrograph configurations. We show that moderate resolution ($R\lesssim5000$) spectroscopy at blue-optical wavelengths ($λ\lesssim4500$ Å) (i) enables the recovery of 2-4 tim…
