We will address the existence of a new symmetry for an imperfect fluid by introducing local four-velocity gauge-like transformations for the case when there is vorticity. A similar tetrad formulation as to the Einstein-Maxwell spacetimes formalism presented in previous manuscripts will be developed in this manuscript for the imperfect fluids. The four-velocity curl and the metric tensor will be invariant under these kind of four-velocity gauge-like local transformations. While the Einstein-Maxwell stress-energy tensor is locally gauge invariant under electromagnetic gauge transformations, the perfect fluid stress-energy tensor will not be invariant under four-velocity gauge-like local transformations. We will dedicate our analysis to the imperfect fluid stress-energy tensor that will be invariant under local four-velocity gauge-like transformations when additional transformations are introduced for several variables included in the stress-energy tensor itself. We will also pay special attention to the construction of a vorticity stress-energy tensor invariant under local four-velocity gauge-like transformations. An application on neutron stars will be developed in order to show the simplifications brought about by these new tetrads.
Rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric imperfect fluids in general relativity admit a much larger set of solutions than the self-similar ones recently suggested in the literature. Explicit forms of the metrics are given and the self-similar sub-cases are discussed.
The Brans-Dicke-like field of scalar-tensor gravity can be described as an imperfect fluid in an approach in which the field equations are regarded as effective Einstein equations. After completing this approach we recover, as a special case, the known effective fluid for a scalar coupled nonminimally to the Ricci curvature and we describe the imperfect fluid equivalent of f(R) gravity. A symmetry of electrovacuum Brans-Dicke gravity is translated into a symmetry of the corresponding effective fluid. The discussion is valid for any spacetime geometry.
When solving the equations of General Relativity in a symmetric sector, it is natural to consider the same symmetry for the geometry and stress-energy. This implies that for static and isotropic spacetimes, the most general natural stress-energy tensor is a sum of a perfect fluid and a radial imperfect fluid component. In the special situations where the perfect fluid component vanishes or is a spacetime constant, the solutions to Einstein's equations can be thought of as modified Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild-de Sitter spaces. Exact solutions of this type are derived and it is shown that wh…
So far all known singularity-free cosmological models are cylindrically symmetric. Here we present a new family of spherically symmetric non-singular models filled with imperfect fluid and radial heat flow, and satisfying the weak and strong energy conditions. For large $t$ anisotropy in pressure and heat flux tend to vanish leading to a perfect fluid. There is a free function of time in the model, which can be suitably chosen for non-singular behaviour and there exist multiplicity of such choices.
We revisit the issue of the fluid description of minimally coupled scalar fields. While in a cosmological setup the interpretation of a time-evolving scalar field as a perfect fluid is well-understood, the situation is more intricate when the scalar field is static, but has a spatial gradient, a situation motivated by black hole perturbations in scalar-tensor theories. Then the scalar field is interpreted as either a particular imperfect fluid of type I or a superposition of a pair of leftgoing (incoming) and rightgoing (outgoing) null dusts with a perfect fluid. Finally, when the scalar gradi…
We study five dimensional cosmological models with four dimensional hypersufaces of the Bianchi type I and V. In this way the five dimensional vacuum field equations $\rm G_{AB} = 0$, led us to four dimensional matter equations $\rm G_{μν}=T_{μν}$ and the matter is interpreted as a purely geometrical property of a fifth dimension. Also, we find that the energy-momentum tensor induced from the fifth dimension has the structure of an imperfect fluid that has dissipative terms.
We derive a shortcut stationary metric formula for generating imperfect fluid rotating solutions, in Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, from spherically symmetric static ones. We explore the properties of the curvature scalar and stress-energy tensor for all types of rotating regular solutions we can generate without restricting ourselves to specific examples of regular solutions (regular black holes or wormholes). We show through examples how it is generally possible to generate an imperfect fluid regular rotating solution via radial coordinate transformations. We derive rotating wormholes that are…
An inhomogeneous fluid in accelerated motion is investigated. When the velocity field $v(x)$ is not constant, the geometry viewed by a static observer is curved, as if the observer were immersed in a gravitational field. A velocity-dependent semiclassical gravitational potential is introduced, which obeys an Yukawa-type equation, written in Cartesian coordinates. The timelike and null geodesic equations are investigated. One finds that the fluid has zero energy density corresponding to the perfect fluid part but nonzero anisotropic energy density. The pressures will no longer depend on $\hbar$…
The first-order general relativistic theory of a generic dissipative (heat-conducting, viscous, particle-creating) fluid is rediscussed from a unified covariant frame-independent point of view. By generalizing some previous works in the literature, we derive a formula for the temperature variation rate, which is valid both in Eckart's (particle) and in the Landau-Lifshitz (energy) frames. Particular attention is paid to the case of gravitational particle creation and its possible cross-effect with the bulk viscosity mechanism.
In this paper we show that an equivalence between Horndeski and beyond Horndeski theories and general relativity with an effective imperfect fluid can be formally established. The formal equivalence is discussed for several particular cases of interest. Working in the cosmological framework, it is shown that, while the effective stress-energy tensor of viable Horndeski theories is formally equivalent to that of an imperfect fluid with anisotropic stresses and vanishing heat flux vector, the effective stress-energy tensor of beyond Horndeski theories is equivalent to the one of a perfect fluid …
We investigate how various inflationary and bouncing cosmologies can be realized by imperfect fluids with a generalized equation of state, in the context of both classical and loop quantum cosmology. With regards to the inflationary cosmologies, we study the intermediate inflation scenario, the $R^2$ inflation scenario and two constant-roll inflation scenarios and with regards to the bouncing cosmologies we study the matter bounce scenario, the singular bounce and the super bounce scenario. Within the context of the classical cosmology, we calculate the spectral index of the power spectrum of …
Extensions of Einstein's General Relativity (GR) can formally be given a GR structure in which additional geometric degrees of freedom are mapped on an effective energy-momentum tensor. The corresponding effective cosmic medium can then be modeled as an imperfect fluid within GR. The imperfect fluid structure allows us to include, on a phenomenological basis, anisotropic stresses and energy fluxes which are considered as potential signatures for deviations from the cosmological standard $Λ$-cold-dark-matter ($Λ$CDM) model. As an example, we consider the dynamics of a scalar-tensor extension of…
A static, spherically symmetric spacetime with negative pressures is conjectured inside a star. The gravitational field is repulsive and so a central singularity is avoided. The positive energy density and the pressures of the imperfect fluid are finite everywhere. The Tolman-Komar energy of the space is negative, as for a de Sitter geometry. From the Darmois-Israel junction conditions on the star surface one finds the constant length $b$ from the metric and the expression of the surface tension $σ$ of the thin shell separating the interior from the Schwarzschild exterior. Some properties of t…
A generalized equation of state corresponding to a model that includes a Chaplygin gas and a viscous term is investigated, in the context of the reconstruction program in scalar field cosmology. The corresponding inflationary model parameters can be conveniently adjusted in order to reproduce the most recent PLANCK data. The influence of the Chaplygin gas term contribution, in relation with previous models, is discussed. Exit from inflation is shown to occur quite naturally in the new model.
This paper tries to obtain a simple picture of several aspects of the mode structure in relativistic non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Its pedagogical focus is on the relation between long-wavelength perturbation modes of the causal Müller-Israel-Stewart (MIS) theory and those of the traditional Eckart theory. Principally, this issue was clarified in a series of papers by Hiscock and Lindblom (see [8-10]). Here, I put together some essential features which do not require the entire formalism of the complete theory.
We present a new prescription for analysing cosmological perturbations in a more-general class of scalar-field dark-energy models where the energy-momentum tensor has an imperfect-fluid form. This class includes Brans-Dicke models, f(R) gravity, theories with kinetic gravity braiding and generalised galileons. We employ the intuitive language of fluids, allowing us to explicitly maintain a dependence on physical and potentially measurable properties. We demonstrate that hydrodynamics is not always a valid description for describing cosmological perturbations in general scalar-field theories an…
We study the evolution of an anisotropic shear-free fluid with heat flux and kinematic self-similarity of the second kind. We found a class of solution to the Einstein field equations by assuming that the part of the tangential pressure which is explicitly time dependent of the fluid is zero and that the fluid moves along time-like geodesics. The energy conditions, geometrical and physical properties of the solutions are studied. The energy conditions are all satisfied at the beginning of the collapse but when the system approaches the singularity the energy conditions are violated, allowing f…
We present a standard hydrodynamical description for non-canonical scalar field theories with kinetic gravity braiding. In particular, this picture applies to the simplest galileons and k-essence. The fluid variables not only have a clear physical meaning but also drastically simplify the analysis of the system. The fluid carries charges corresponding to shifts in field space. This shift-charge current contains a spatial part responsible for diffusion of the charges. Moreover, in the incompressible limit, the equation of motion becomes the standard diffusion equation. The fluid is indeed imper…
We construct a cosmological toy model based on a Finslerian structure of space-time. In particular, we are interested in a specific Finslerian Lorentz violating theory based on a curved version of Cohen and Glashow's Very Special Relativity. The osculation of a Finslerian manifold to a Riemannian leads to the limit of Relativistic Cosmology, for a specified observer. A modified flat FRW cosmology is produced. The analogue of a zero energy particle unfolds some special properties of the dynamics. The kinematical equations of motion are affected by local anisotropies. Seeds of Lorentz Violations…
We consider Bianchi VI spacetime, which also can be reduced to Bianchi types VI0-V-III-I. We initially consider the most general form of the energy-momentum tensor which yields anisotropic stress and heat flow. We then derive an energy-momentum tensor that couples with the spatial curvature in a way so as to cancel out the terms that arise due to the spatial curvature in the evolution equations of the Einstein field equations. We obtain exact solutions for the universes indefinetly expanding with constant mean deceleration parameter. The solutions are beriefly discussed for each Bianchi type. …
In this article, we considered the bulk viscous fluid in the formalism of modified gravity in which the general form of a gravitational action is $f(R, T)$ function, where $R$ is the curvature scalar and $T$ is the trace of the energy momentum tensor within the frame of flat FRW space time. The cosmological model dominated by bulk viscous matter with total bulk viscous coefficient expressed as a linear combination of the velocity and acceleration of the expansion of the universe in such a way that $ξ=ξ_0+ξ_1\frac{\dot{a}}{a}+ξ_2\frac{\ddot{a}}{\dot{a}}$, where $ξ_0$, $ξ_1$ and $ξ_2$ are consta…
Combining the equivalence between cosmological particle creation and an effective viscous fluid pressure with the fact that the latter represents a dynamical degree of freedom within the second-order Israel-Stewart theory for imperfect fluids, we reconsider the possibility of accelerated expansion in fluid cosmology. We find an inherent self-limitation for the magnitude of an effective bulk pressure which is due to adiabatic (isentropic) particle production. For a production rate which depends quadratically on the Hubble rate we confirm the existence of solutions which describe a smooth transi…
We report a symmetry property of the Einstein-Friedmann equations for spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes filled with a perfect fluid with any constant equation of state. The symmetry transformations form a one-parameter Abelian group.
We prove the existence of a class of perfect-fluid cosmologies with polarised Gowdy symmetry and a Kasner-like singularity. These solutions of the Einstein equations depend on four free functions of one space coordinate and are constructed by solving a system of Fuchsian equations.
We study the complete conformal geometry of shear-free spacetimes with spherical symmetry and do not specify the form of the matter content. The general conformal Killing symmetry is solved and we can explicitly exhibit the vector. The existence of a conformal symmetry places restrictions on the model. The conditions on the gravitational potentials are expressed as a system of integrability conditions. Timelike sectors and inheriting conformal symmetry vectors, which map fluid flow lines conformally onto fluid flow lines, are generated and the integrability conditions are shown to be satisfied…
Conformal collineations (a generalization of conformal motion) and Ricci inheritance collineations, defined by $£_ξR_{ab}=2αR_{ab}$, for string cloud and string fluids in general relativity are studied. By investigating the kinematical and dynamical properties of such fluids and using the field equations, some recent studies on the restrictions imposed by conformal collineations are extended, and new results are found.
It is shown that an effective anisotropic spherically symmetric fluid model with heat flow can absorb the addition to a perfect fluid of pressure anisotropy, heat flow, bulk and shear viscosity, electric field and null fluid. In most cases the induction of effective heat flow can be avoided.
We study, in this paper, curvature inheritance symmetry (CI), $£_ξR_{bcd}^{a}=2αR_{bcd}^{a}$, where $α$ is a scalar function, for string cloud and string fluid in the context of general relativity. Also, we have obtained some result when a proper CI (i.e., $α\neq 0$) is also a conformal Killing vector.
A string-inspired duality symmetry of the spatially flat Friedmann equations of general-relativistic cosmology is discussed and generalized, providing a map between exact solutions corresponding to different values of the barotropic index.
Asymptotics of solutions of a perfect fluid when coupled with a cosmological constant in four-dimensional spacetime with toroidal symmetry are studied. In particular, it is found that the problem of self-similar solutions of the first kind for a fluid with the equation of state, $p = k ρ$, can be reduced to solving a master equation of the form, $$ 2 F(q, k)\frac{q''(ξ)}{q'(ξ)} - G(q,k) q'(ξ) = \frac{4}ξ. $$ For $k = 0$ and $k = -1/3$ the general solutions are obtained and their main local and global properties are studied in detail.
Using the one-parameter internal symmetry group in the Bianchi type-I spacetime for cosmological models with a perfect fluid, we show that a system of coordinates exists in the associated internal space where two scale factors become equal. We find the general solution for an anisotropic model containing a perfect fluid with constant baryotropic index and investigate the asymptotic regimes. We obtain exact solutions for a set of anisotropic fluids which includes an anisotropic stiff fluid.
The problem of two stiff fluids (energy density = pressure) moving radially in spherical symmetry is treated. The metric ansatz is chosen spherically symmetric, conformally static with a multiplicative separation of variables. The first fluid is described mathematically via a massless scalar field. The coordinate system is chosen comoving with the second fluid which the separation of variables requires to be stiff too. The fluids are interacting only gravitationally and their energy momentum tensors are separately conserved. The Einstein equations are reduced to a single nonlinear ODE of secon…
In this paper, we have searched the existence of the similarity solution for plane symmetric inhomogeneous cosmological models in general relativity. The matter source consists of perfect fluid with proportionality relation between expansion scalar and shear scalar. The isovector fields of Einstein's field equation for the models under consideration are derived. A new class of exact solutions of Einstein's field equation have been obtained for inhomogeneous space-time. The physical behaviors and geometric aspects of the derived models have been discussed in detail.
The symmetry method is used to derive solutions of Einstein's equations for fluid spheres using an isotropic metric and a velocity four vector that is non-comoving. Initially the Lie, classical approach is used to review and provide a connecting framework for many comoving and so shear free solutions. This provides the basis for the derivation of the classical point symmetries for the more general and mathematicaly less tractable description of Einstein's equations in the non-comoving frame. Although the range of symmetries is restrictive, existing and new symmetry solutions with non-zero shea…
Using a new metric for generating rotating solutions, we derive in a general fashion the solution of an imperfect fluid and that of its conformal homolog. We discuss the conditions that the stress-energy tensors and invariant scalars be regular. On classical physical grounds, it is stressed that, conformal fluids used as cores for static or rotating solutions, are exempt from any malicious behavior in that they are finite and defined everywhere.
We show that a single imperfect fluid can be used as a source to obtain the generalized McVittie metric as an exact solution to Einstein's equations. The mass parameter in this metric varies with time thanks to a mechanism based on the presence of a temperature gradient. This fully dynamical solution is interpreted as an accreting black hole in an expanding universe if the metric asymptotes to Schwarzschild-de Sitter at temporal infinity. We present a simple but instructive example for the mass function and briefly discuss the structure of the apparent horizons and the past singularity.
We show that combinations of (in general, non-linear) 2- and 3-form fields analogous to the Maxwell (1-form) field, completely describe perfect fluids, including the rotating ones. In the non-rotating case, the 2-form field in sufficient, and a free 3-form field proves to be equivalent to appearance of the cosmological term in Einstein's equations (the square-root non-linearity corresponding to $Λ=0$). The gauge degrees of freedom break down when a rotation is included, but even when they exist, there obviously fails to be realized an equivalence of the 2-form field and the massless scalar one…
A generalization of scalar electrodynamics called fluid electrodynamics is presented. In this theory a fluid replaces the Higgs scalar field. Fluid electrodynamics might have application to the theory of low temperature Helium superfluids, but here it is argued that it provides an alternative method of approaching symmetry breaking in particle physics. The method of constructing fluid electrodynamics is to start with the velocity decomposition of a perfect fluid as in general relativity. A unit vector tangent to the flow lines of an isentropic fluid can be written in terms of scalar potentials…
We have investigated a non-static and rotating model of the universe with an imperfect fluid distribution. It is found that the model is free from singularity and represents an ever expanding universe with shear and rotation vanishing for large value of time.
This paper presents a new wormhole solution by assuming that a homogeneously distributed fluid with equation of state $p=ωρ$ can be adapted to an anisotropic spacetime such as a wormhole and that this spacetime admits a one-parameter group of conformal motions. The pressure $p$ in the equation of state becomes the lateral pressure $p_t$ instead of the radial pressure $p_r$, as assumed in previous studies. Given that $p_t=ωρ$, $p_r$ is then determined from the Einstein field equations. A wormhole solution can be obtained only if $ω<-1$ or $0<ω<1$. Since the former case corresponds to phantom da…
We study the general properties of dissipative fluid distributions endowed with hyperbolical symmetry. Their physical properties are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the energy density is necessarily negative and the fluid distribution cannot fill the region close to the center of symmetry. Such a region may be represented by a vacuum cavity around the center. By assuming a causal transport equation some interesting thermodynamical properties of these fluids are found. Several exact analytical solutions which evolve in the quasi-homologous regime and satisfy the vanishing complexity factor…
We consider self-gravitating fluids in cosmological spacetimes with Gowdy symmetry on the torus $T^3$ and, in this class, we solve the singular initial value problem for the Einstein-Euler system of general relativity, when an initial data set is prescribed on the hypersurface of singularity. We specify initial conditions for the geometric and matter variables and identify the asymptotic behavior of these variables near the cosmological singularity. Our analysis of this class of nonlinear and singular partial differential equations exhibits a condition on the sound speed, which leads us to the…
We find the group of symmetry transformations generated by interacting fluids in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime which links cosmologies with the same scale factor {\it (identity)} or with scale factors $a$ and $a^{-1}$ {\it (duality)}. There exists a duality between contracting and superaccelerated expanding scenarios associated with {\it (phantom)} cosmologies. We investigate the action of this symmetry group on self-interacting minimally(conformally) coupled quintessence and $k$-essence cosmologies.
Applying the method of conformal metric to a given static axially symmetric vacuum solution of the Einstein equations, we have shown that there is no solution representing a cosmic ideal fluid which is asymtotically FLRW. Letting the cosmic fluid to be imperfect there are axially symmetric solutions tending to FLRW at space infinity. The solution we have found represents an axially symmetric spacetime leading to a spherically symmetric Einstein tensor. Therefore, we have found a solution of Einstein equations representing a spherically symmetric matter distribution corresponding to a spacetime…
We carry on a general study on axially symmetric, static fluids admitting a conformal Killing vector (CKV). The physical relevance of this kind of symmetry is emphasized. Next, we investigate all possible consequences derived from the imposition of such a symmetry. Special attention is paid to the problem of symmetry inheritance. Several families of solutions endowed with a CKV are exhibited.
We discuss the most general Finsler spacetime geometry obeying the cosmological symmetry group $\mathrm{SO}(4)$. On this background geometry we derive the equations of motion for the most general kinetic fluid obeying the same cosmological symmetry. For this purpose we propose a set of coordinates on the tangent bundle of the spacetime manifold which greatly simplifies the cosmological symmetry generators.
According to the black hole membrane paradigm, the black hole event horizon behaves like a 2+1 dimensional fluid. The fluid has nonzero momentum density but zero velocity. As a result, it does not respond to tidal forces in the usual way. In this note, we point out that this unusual behavior can be traced back to an emergent, near-horizon Carroll symmetry (the Carroll group is the $c\rightarrow 0$ limit of the Poincaré group). For Schwarzschild black holes in $d=4$ general relativity, we relate the vanishing of the black hole fluid's velocity to vanishing of the black hole's Love numbers. This…
In this paper we further develop the fluctuating hydrodynamics proposed in arXiv:1511.03646 in a number of ways. We first work out in detail the classical limit of the hydrodynamical action, which exhibits many simplifications. In particular, this enables a transparent formulation of the action in physical spacetime in the presence of arbitrary external fields. It also helps to clarify issues related to field redefinitions and frame choices. We then propose that the action is invariant under a $Z_2$ symmetry to which we refer as the dynamical KMS symmetry. The dynamical KMS symmetry is physica…
We employ a three fluid model in order to construct a cosmological model in the Friedmann Robertson Walker flat spacetime, which contains three types of matter dark energy, dark matter and a perfect fluid with a linear equation of state. Dark matter is described by dust and dark energy with a scalar field with potential V(ϕ). In order to fix the scalar field potential we demand Lie symmetry invariance of the field equations, which is a model-independent assumption. The requirement of an extra Lie symmetry selects the exponential scalar field potential. The further requirement that the analytic…
Hydrodynamics of the non-relativistic compressible fluid in the curved spacetime is derived using the generalized framework of the stochastic variational method (SVM) for continuum medium. The fluid-stress tensor of the resultant equation becomes asymmetric for the exchange of the indices, differently from the standard Euclidean one. Its incompressible limit suggests that the viscous term should be represented with the Bochner Laplacian. Moreover the modified Navier-Stokes-Fourier (NSF) equation proposed by Brenner can be considered even in the curved spacetime. To confirm the compatibility wi…
We introduce a large class of scalar-tensor models with interactions containing the second derivatives of the scalar field but not leading to additional degrees of freedom. These models exhibit peculiar features, such as an essential mixing of scalar and tensor kinetic terms, which we have named kinetic braiding. This braiding causes the scalar stress tensor to deviate from the perfect-fluid form. Cosmology in these models possesses a rich phenomenology, even in the limit where the scalar is an exact Goldstone boson. Generically, there are attractor solutions where the scalar monitors the beha…
