Stereo depth estimation is fundamental to underwater robotic perception, yet suffers from severe domain shifts caused by wavelength-dependent light attenuation, scattering, and refraction. Recent approaches leverage monocular foundation models with GRU-based iterative refinement for underwater adaptation; however, the sequential gating and local convolutional kernels in GRUs necessitate multiple iterations for long-range disparity propagation, limiting performance in large-disparity and textureless underwater regions. In this paper, we propose StereoAdapter-2, which replaces the conventional ConvGRU updater with a novel ConvSS2D operator based on selective state space models. The proposed operator employs a four-directional scanning strategy that naturally aligns with epipolar geometry while capturing vertical structural consistency, enabling efficient long-range spatial propagation within a single update step at linear computational complexity. Furthermore, we construct UW-StereoDepth-80K, a large-scale synthetic underwater stereo dataset featuring diverse baselines, attenuation coefficients, and scattering parameters through a two-stage generative pipeline combining semantic-aware style transfer and geometry-consistent novel view synthesis. Combined with dynamic LoRA adaptation inherited from StereoAdapter, our framework achieves state-of-the-art zero-shot performance on underwater benchmarks with 17% improvement on TartanAir-UW and 7.2% improvment on SQUID, with real-world validation on the BlueROV2 platform demonstrates the robustness of our approach. Binocular stereo vision is an important branch of machine vision, which imitates the human eye and matches the left and right images captured by the camera based on epipolar constraints. The matched disparity map can be calculated according to the camera imaging model to obtain a depth map, and then the depth map is converted to a point cloud image to obtain spatial point coordinates, thereby achieving the purpose of ranging. However, due to the influence of illumination under water, the captured images no longer meet the epipolar constraints, and the changes in imaging models make traditional…
Visibility underwater is challenging, and degrades as the distance between the subject and camera increases, making vision tasks in the forward-looking direction more difficult. We have collected underwater forward-looking stereo-vision and visual-inertial image sets in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. To our knowledge there are no other public datasets in the underwater environment acquired with this camera-sensor orientation published with ground-truth. These datasets are critical for the development of several underwater applications, including obstacle avoidance, visual odometry, 3D tracking…

Underwater Cultural Heritage (CH) sites are widely spread; from ruins in coastlines up to shipwrecks in deep. The documentation and preservation of this heritage is an obligation of the mankind, dictated also by the international treaties like the Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Her-itage which fosters the use of "non-destructive techniques and survey meth-ods in preference over the recovery of objects". However, submerged CH lacks in protection and monitoring in regards to the land CH and nowadays recording and documenting, for digital preservation as well as dissemina…

Demands on capturing dynamic scenes of underwater environments are rapidly growing. Passive stereo is applicable to capture dynamic scenes, however the shape with textureless surfaces or irregular reflections cannot be recovered by the technique. In our system, we add a pattern projector to the stereo camera pair so that artificial textures are augmented on the objects. To use the system at underwater environments, several problems should be compensated, i.e., refraction, disturbance by fluctuation and bubbles. Further, since surface of the objects are interfered by the bubbles, projected patt…
In this paper, we propose a novel technique to reconstruct 3D surface of an underwater object using stereo images. Reconstructing the 3D surface of an underwater object is really a challenging task due to degraded quality of underwater images. There are various reason of quality degradation of underwater images i.e., non-uniform illumination of light on the surface of objects, scattering and absorption effects. Floating particles present in underwater produces Gaussian noise on the captured underwater images which degrades the quality of images. The degraded underwater images are preprocessed …

This paper presents a novel dataset for the development of visual navigation and simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) algorithms as well as for underwater intervention tasks. It differs from existing datasets as it contains ground truth for the vehicle's position captured by an underwater motion tracking system. The dataset contains distortion-free and rectified stereo images along with the calibration parameters of the stereo camera setup. Furthermore, the experiments were performed and recorded in a controlled environment, where current and waves could be generated allowing the datas…

Dense 3D shape acquisition of swimming human or live fish is an important research topic for sports, biological science and so on. For this purpose, active stereo sensor is usually used in the air, however it cannot be applied to the underwater environment because of refraction, strong light attenuation and severe interference of bubbles. Passive stereo is a simple solution for capturing dynamic scenes at underwater environment, however the shape with textureless surfaces or irregular reflections cannot be recovered. Recently, the stereo camera pair with a pattern projector for adding artifici…
There is a strong demand on capturing underwater scenes without distortions caused by refraction. Since a light field camera can capture several light rays at each point of an image plane from various directions, if geometrically correct rays are chosen, it is possible to synthesize a refraction-free image. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to efficiently select such rays to synthesize a refraction-free image from an underwater image captured by a light field camera. In addition, we propose a stereo technique to reconstruct 3D shapes using a pair of our refraction-free images, which …

Non-extractive fish abundance estimation with the aid of visual analysis has drawn increasing attention. Unstable illumination, ubiquitous noise and low frame rate video capturing in the underwater environment, however, make conventional tracking methods unreliable. In this paper, we present a multiple fish tracking system for low-contrast and low-frame-rate stereo videos with the use of a trawl-based underwater camera system. An automatic fish segmentation algorithm overcomes the low-contrast issues by adopting a histogram backprojection approach on double local-thresholded images to ensure a…

In this article we present a novel underwater dataset collected from several field trials within the EU FP7 project "Cognitive autonomous diving buddy (CADDY)", where an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) was used to interact with divers and monitor their activities. To our knowledge, this is one of the first efforts to collect a large dataset in underwater environments targeting object classification, segmentation and human pose estimation tasks. The first part of the dataset contains stereo camera recordings (~10K) of divers performing hand gestures to communicate and interact with an AUV i…

Underwater images suffer from color distortion and low contrast, because light is attenuated while it propagates through water. Attenuation under water varies with wavelength, unlike terrestrial images where attenuation is assumed to be spectrally uniform. The attenuation depends both on the water body and the 3D structure of the scene, making color restoration difficult. Unlike existing single underwater image enhancement techniques, our method takes into account multiple spectral profiles of different water types. By estimating just two additional global parameters: the attenuation ratios of…

Retrieving the missing dimension information in acoustic images from 2D forward-looking sonar is a well-known problem in the field of underwater robotics. There are works attempting to retrieve 3D information from a single image which allows the robot to generate 3D maps with fly-through motion. However, owing to the unique image formulation principle, estimating 3D information from a single image faces severe ambiguity problems. Classical methods of multi-view stereo can avoid the ambiguity problems, but may require a large number of viewpoints to generate an accurate model. In this work, we …
