In an early theoretical work published in 1965, Belen'kii & Fradkin proposed a turbulent diffusivity model for Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) mixing. We review its derivation and present alternative arguments leading to the same final similarity equation. The original work then introduced an approximation that led to a simplified ordinary differential equation (ODE), which was used primarily to derive the important scaling result, $h \sim (\ln R)gt^2$. Here, we extend the analysis by examining the solutions to both the full similarity ODE and the simplified ODE in detail. It is shown that the full similarity equation captures many now well-known features of non-Boussinesq RT flows, including asymmetric spike and bubble growth and a systematic shift of velocity statistics toward the light-fluid side. Comparisons of the theoretical model with numerical and experimental studies show reasonable agreement in both spatial profiles and growth trends of mixing layer heights. We further show that a global mass correction applied to the simplified solution closely approximates the full solution, highlighting that, to leading order, RT mixing is governed by the competing dynamics between diffusion of $\ln \barρ$ and mass conservation.
Comment on "Scalings of Rayleigh-Taylor Instability at Large Viscosity Contrasts in Porous Media" (N. Sabet, H. Hassanzadeh, A. De Wit, and J. Abedi (2021) Phys. Rev. Lett. 126:094501).
Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a compressible fluid is reconsidered. The density is allowed to vary with pressure under the barotropy assumption. For the case with equal speeds of sound in the two superposed fluids, in order to give a non-trivial compressibility correction to the Rayleigh-Taylor growth rate, the compressibility correction is calculated to $O(g^2/k^2a^4)$. To this order, compressibility effects are found to reduce the growth rate.
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a magnetic fluid superimposed on a non-magnetic liquid of lower density may be suppressed with the help of a spatially homogeneous magnetic field rotating in the plane of the undisturbed interface. Starting from the complete set of Navier-Stokes equations for both liquids a Floquet analysis is performed which consistently takes into account the viscosities of the fluids. Using experimentally relevant values of the parameters we suggest to use this stabilization mechanism to provide controlled initial conditions for an experimental investigation of the Rayleig…
In this work we suggest that a turbulent phase of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability can be explained as a universal stochastic wave traveling with constant speed in a properly renormalized system. This wave, originating from ordinary deterministic chaos in a renormalized time, has two constant limiting states at both sides. These states are related to the initial discontinuity at large scales and to stationary turbulence at small scales. The theoretical analysis is confirmed with extensive numerical simulations made for a new shell model, which features basic properties of the phenomenological t…
The multiplicity of routes from deterministic chaos to turbulence caused by the spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the flows induced by Rayleigh-Taylor instability has been studied using the notion of distributed chaos. Results of numerical simulations, and laboratory and oceanic measurements have been used for this purpose. Small-scale chaotic MHD dynamo and chaotic Richtmyer-Meshkov mixing layer have been briefly discussed in this context.
We revisit the canonical Rayleigh-Taylor instability and investigate the case of a thin film of fluid upon the underside of an inclined plane. The presence of a natural flow along the plane competes with the conventional droplet forming instability. In particular, experiments reveal that no drops form for inclinations greater than a critical value. These features are rationalized in the context of the absolute/convective analysis conducted in this article.
We study miscible Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) fingering instability in two-dimensional homogeneous porous media, in which the fluid density varies non-monotonically as a function of the solute concentration such that the maximum density lies in the interior of the domain, thus creating a stable and an unstable density gradients that evolve in time. With the help of linear stability analysis (LSA) as well as nonlinear simulations the effects of density gradients on the stability of RT fingers are investigated. As diffusion relaxes the concentration gradient, a non-monotonic density profile emerges in …
In this work a non-trivial effect of the interfacial curvature on the stability of accelerated interfaces, such as liquid rims, is uncovered. The new stability analysis, based on operator and boundary perturbation theories, reveals and quantifies influence of the interfacial curvature on the growth rate and on the wavenumber selection of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The systematic approach developed here also provides a rigorous generalization of the widely used \textit{ad hoc} idea, due to Layzer [Astrophys. J. \textbf{122}, 1-12 (1955)], of approximating the potential velocity field near…
We present results from numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence, performed using a recently proposed lattice Boltzmann method able to describe consistently a thermal compressible flow subject to an external forcing. The method allowed us to study the system both in the nearly-Boussinesq and strongly compressible regimes. Moreover, we show that when the stratification is important, the presence of the adiabatic gradient causes the arrest of the mixing process.
The turbulent Rayleigh--Taylor system in a rotating reference frame is investigated by direct numerical simulations within the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation. On the basis of theoretical arguments, supported by our simulations, we show that the Rossby number decreases in time, and therefore the Coriolis force becomes more important as the system evolves and produces many effects on Rayleigh--Taylor turbulence. We find that rotation reduces the intensity of turbulent velocity fluctuations and therefore the growth rate of the temperature mixing layer. Moreover, in presence of rotation the con…
We study the 3D topology of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) and Richtmyer-Meshkov (RM) single-modes, which includes bubbles, jets and saddle points. We present an analytic description of the interface as a whole, for arbitrary time-dependant acceleration g(t). The dependance of morphology on the lattice - Hexagonal, square or triangular -of bubbles are investigated. RM accelerations in the case of a large density ratio produce jets well separated from each other while, in RT case, jets are connected by liquid sheets. We compare our analytic results to numerical simulations.
We investigate long time numerical simulations of the inviscid Rayleigh-Taylor instability at Atwood number one using a boundary integral method. We are able to attain the asymptotic behavior for the spikes predicted by Clavin & Williams\cite{clavin} for which we give a simplified demonstration. In particular we observe that the spike's curvature evolves like $t^3$ while the overshoot in acceleration shows a good agreement with the suggested $1/t^5$ law. Moreover, we obtain consistent results for the prefactor coefficients of the asymptotic laws. Eventually we exhibit the self-similar behavior…
We study the turbulent evolution originated from a system subjected to a Rayleigh-Taylor instability with a double density at high resolution in a 2 dimensional geometry using a highly optimized thermal Lattice Boltzmann code for GPUs. The novelty of our investigation stems from the initial condition, given by the superposition of three layers with three different densities, leading to the development of two Rayleigh-Taylor fronts that expand upward and downward and collide in the middle of the cell. By using high resolution numerical data we highlight the effects induced by the collision of t…
We report and discuss case study simulations of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the Boussinesq, incompressible regime developed to turbulence. Our main focus is on a statistical analysis of density and velocity fluctuations inside of the already developed and growing in size mixing zone. Novel observations reported in the manuscript concern self-similarity of the velocity and density fluctuations spectra inside of the mixing zone snapshot, independence of the spectra of the horizontal slice level, and universality showing itself in a virtual independence of the internal structure of the mix…
Influence of quantum effects on the internal waves and the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in plasma is investigated. It is shown that quantum pressure always stabilizes the RT instability. The problem is solved both in the limit of short-wavelength perturbations and exactly for density profiles with layers of exponential stratification. In the case of stable stratification, quantum pressure modifies the dispersion relation of the inertial waves. Because of the quantum effects, the internal waves may propagate in the transverse direction, which was impossible in the classical case. A specific form…
These fluid dynamics video sequences show two Rayleigh-Taylor instability experiments. The first video sequence shows an experiment where two layers of uniform density are arranged such that the density of the upper layer is greater than the density of the lower. The unstable interface between the two layers is initially supported by a stainless steel barrier. With the removal of the barrier, Rayleigh-Taylor instability results in the creation of a mixing region, which grows with time. This growth accelerates until the mixing region fills the entire tank. The second sequence shows Rayleigh-Tay…
A theory determining the evolution of general Rayleigh-Taylor mixing fronts is established to reproduce firstly all of the documented experiments conducted for diverse acceleration histories and all density ratios. The theory is established in terms of the fundamental conservation and symmetry principles, with special consideration given to the symmetry breaking of the density fields occurring in actual flows. The results reveal the sensitivity/insensitivity of the evolution of a mixing front neighbouring light/heavy fluid to the degree of symmetry breaking, and also explain the distinct evolu…
The dynamics of a thin liquid film on the underside of a curved cylindrical substrate is studied. The evolution of the liquid layer is investigated as the film thickness and the radius of curvature of the substrate are varied. A dimensionless parameter (a modified Bond number) that incorporates both geometric parameters, gravity, and surface tension is identified, and allows the observations to be classified according to three different flow regimes: stable films, films with transient growth of perturbations followed by decay, and unstable films. Experiments and theory confirm that, below a cr…
In this paper I analyze the onset of Rayleigh-Taylor instability between two linear viscoelastic fluids assuming that the perturbations at the interface are small. In the first half, the paper analyzes a stratified viscoelastic fluid in which I prove that the perturbations rise or fall exponentially without oscillating. The second half of the paper examines the effect of electric and magnetic fields on viscoelastic fluids. I show that it is possible to choose electric or magnetic field gradient such that the effective acceleration due to gravity is zero. If a heavy Newtonian fluid rests on top…
Rayleigh-Taylor instability occurs when a heavier fluid overlies a lighter fluid, and the two seek to exchange positions under the effect of gravity. We present linearized theory for arbitrary 3D initial disturbances that grow in time, and calculate the evolution of the interface for early times. A new spectral method is introduced for the fully 3D non-linear problem in a Boussinesq fluid, where the interface between the light and heavy fluid is approximated with a smooth but rapid density change in the fluid. The results of large-scale numerical calculation are presented in fully 3D geometry,…
The effect of rotation upon the classical two-layer Rayleigh-Taylor instability is considered theoretically and compared with previous experimental results. In particular we consider a two-layer system with an axis of rotation that is perpendicular to the interface between the layers. In general we find that a wave mode's growth rate may be reduced by rotation. We further show that in some cases, unstable axisymmetric wave modes may be stabilized by rotating the system above a critical rotation rate associated with the mode's wavelength, the Atwood number and the flow's aspect ratio. We compar…
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability develops when fluids are accelerated counter to their density gradients; intense interfacial fluid mixing ensues with time. The Rayleigh-Taylor mixing controls a broad range of processes in fluids, plasmas, materials, at astrophysical and at atomic scales. In this perspective paper we briefly review theoretical and experimental approaches, and apply theory and experiment to investigate order and disorder in Rayleigh-Taylor flows. The theory finds that properties of heterogeneous anisotropic accelerated Rayleigh-Taylor mixing depart from those of homogeneous isot…
The transition from deterministic to distributed chaos/turbulence at the increase of Rayleigh number (from $10^4$ to $10^8$) in Rayleigh-Bénard convection, controlled by generalized Birkhoff-Saffman invariant, has been studied using the results of direct numerical simulations. The applications of this approach to rotating Rayleigh-Bénard convection, to stably stratified flows, and to observations in the atmosphere and in the solar photosphere have been briefly discussed.
This letter investigates the effect of shear on Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI). Even simple uniform shear strongly influences the instability; longer waves are completely stabilized when density stratification is large (higher Atwood numbers). This apparently counter-intuitive result is due to the presence of Atwood number in the shear term. When the unstable density interface is embedded in a shear layer, shear is again found to stabilize the RTI. However, this configuration introduces additional unstable shear instability modes in the lower wavenumber regime. A new type of shear instabili…
We perform direct numerical simulations of three dimensional Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence with a nonuniform singular initial temperature background. In such conditions, the mixing layer evolves under the driving of a varying effective Atwood number; the long-time growth is still self-similar, but not anymore proportional to $t^2$ and depends on the singularity exponent $c$ of the initial profile $ΔT \propto z^c$. We show that the universality is recovered when looking at the efficiency, defined as the ratio of the variation rates of the kinetic energy over the heat flux. A closure model is propo…
In the paper, the effects of initial perturbations on the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI), Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI), and the coupled Rayleigh-Taylor-Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (RTKHI) systems are investigated using a multiple-relaxation-time discrete Boltzmann model. Six different perturbation interfaces are designed to study the effects of the initial perturbations on the instability systems. Based on the mean heat flux strength $D_{3,1}$, the effects of initial interfaces on the coupled RTKHI are examined in detail. The research is focused on two aspects: (i) the main mechanism…
The effects of polymer additives on Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) instability of immiscible fluids is investigated using the Oldroyd-B viscoelastic model. Analytic results obtained exploiting the phase-field approach show that in polymer solution the growth rate of the instability speeds up with elasticity (but remains slower than in the pure solvent case). Numerical simulations of the viscoelastic binary fluid model confirm this picture.
The Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) instability develops and leads to turbulence when a heavy fluid falls under the action of gravity through a light one. We consider this phenomenon accompanied by a reactive transformation between the fluids, and study with Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) how the reaction (flame) affects the turbulent mixing in the Boussinesq approximation. We discuss "slow" reactions where the characteristic reaction time exceeds the temporal scale of the RT instability. In the early turbulent stage, effects of the flame are distributed over a maturing mixing zone, whose development…
Rayleigh-Taylor interfacial mixing has critical importance in a broad range of processes in nature and technology. In most instances Rayleigh-Taylor dynamics is induced by variable acceleration, whereas the bulk of existing studies is focused on the cases of constant and impulsive accelerations referred respectively as classical Rayleigh-Taylor and classical Richtmyer-Meshkov dynamics. In this work we consider Rayleigh-Taylor mixing induced by variable acceleration with power-law dependence on the spatial coordinate in the acceleration direction. We apply group theory and momentum model to fin…
We give theoretical analyses of the Magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability driven by a rotating magnetic field. Both slab and liner configurations with finite thicknesses are dealt with in the WKB and the non-WKB approximations. Results show that instabilities for all modes (combinations of wave vectors) are alleviated. We further discuss the potential application of the alternant/nested configurations of a theta and a Z pinch to the Theta-Z Liner Inertia Fusion (Theta-Z-LIF) concept.
We study the effects of polymer additives on turbulence generated by the ubiquitous Rayleigh-Taylor instability. Numerical simulations of complete viscoelastic models provide clear evidence that the heat transport is enhanced up to 50% with respect to the Newtonian case. This phenomenon is accompanied by a speed up of the mixing layer growth. We give a phenomenological interpretation of these results based on small-scale turbulent reduction induced by polymers.
We have developed a theoretical analysis to systematically study the late-time evolution of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a finite-sized spatial domain. The nonlinear dynamics of fluids with similar and contrasting densities are considered for two-dimensional flows driven by sustained acceleration. The flows are periodic in the plane normal to the direction of acceleration and have no external mass sources. Group theory analysis is applied to accurately account for the mode coupling. Asymptotic nonlinear solutions are found to describe the inter-facial dynamics far from and near the bound…
It is shown how the variable density model (VDM) that governs the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) for the miscible mixing of two incompressible fluids can be transformed into a diffusive version of the inhomogeneous, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations forced by gradients of the composition density $ρ$ of the mixing layer. This demonstrates how buoyancy-driven flows drive and enhance Navier-Stokes turbulence. The role of the potential vorticity $q = ω\cdot\nablaρ$ is also discussed.
The complex evolution of turbulent mixing in Rayleigh-Taylor convection is studied in terms of eddy diffusiviy models for the mean temperature profile. It is found that a non-linear model, derived within the general framework of Prandtl mixing theory, reproduces accurately the evolution of turbulent profiles obtained from numerical simulations. Our model allows to give very precise predictions for the turbulent heat flux and for the Nusselt number in the ultimate state regime of thermal convection.
Temporal and spatio-temporal (turbulence) distributed chaos in Bénard-Marangoni and Rayleigh-Bénard convection have been studied using results of laboratory experiments and direct numerical simulations in the terms of effective chaotic diffusivity (viscosity) and action. It is shown that for the both cases decaying part of the power spectra has stretched exponential form - for temporal spectrum $E(f) \propto \exp-(f/f_β)^{1/2}$ and for spatial spectrum $E(k) \propto \exp-(k/k_β)^{2/3}$, where the $f_β$ and $k_β$ represent low-frequency (large-scale) coherent oscillations.
In this research, the height, curvature and velocity of the bubble tip in Rayleigh-Taylor instability at arbitrary Atwood number with horizontal magnetic field are investigated. To support the earlier simulation and experimental results, the vorticity generation inside the bubble is introduced. It is found that, in early nonlinear stage, the temporal evolution of the bubble tip parameters depend essentially on the strength and initial perturbation of the magnetic field, although the asymptotic nature coincides with the non magnetic case. The model proposed here agrees with the previous linear,…
For years, astrophysicists, plasma fusion and fluid physicists have puzzled over Rayleigh-Taylor turbulent mixing layers. In particular, strong discrepancies in the growth rates have been observed between experiments and numerical simulations. Although two phenomenological mechanisms (mode-coupling and mode-competition) have brought some insight on these differences, convincing theoretical arguments are missing to explain the observed values. In this paper, we provide an analytical expression of the growth rate compatible with both mechanisms and is valide for a self-similar, low Atwood Raylei…
We report new measurements of single particle dispersion in turbulent two-dimensional (2D) flows. Laboratory experiments in electromagnetically driven and Faraday wave driven turbulence reveal a transition from weakly dispersing superdiffusive regime to strongly dispersing Brownian diffusion as the flow energy is increased in a broad range. The transition to fully developed 2D turbulence is characterized by the topological changes in the fluid particle trajectories and the development of self-similar diffusion. The degree of 2D turbulence development can be quantified by a parameter describing…
The Rayleigh--Taylor (RT) turbulence is investigated by means of high resolution numerical simulations. The main question addressed here is on whether RT phenomenology can be considered as a manifestation of universality of Navier--Stokes equations with respect to forcing mechanisms. At a theoretical level the situation is far from being firmly established and, indeed, contrasting predictions have been formulated. Our first aim here is to clarify the above controversy through a deep analysis of scaling behavior of relevant statistical observables. The effects of intermittency on the mean field…
Synchrotron emission from a supernova necessitates a magnetic field, but it is unknown how strong the relevant magnetic fields are, and what mechanism generates them. In this study, we perform high-resolution numerical gas dynamics calculations to determine the growth of turbulence due to Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and the resulting kinetic energy in turbulent fluctuations, to infer the strength of magnetic fields amplified by this turbulence. We find that Rayleigh-Taylor instability can produce turbulent fluctuations strong enough to amplify magnetic fields to a few percent of equipartition…
Pushing two fluids with different density one against the other causes the development of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability at their interface, which further evolves in a complex mixing layer. In porous media, this process is influenced by the viscous resistance experienced while flowing through the pores, which is described by the Darcy's law. Here, we investigate the mixing properties of the Darcy-Rayleigh-Taylor system in the limit of large Péclet number by means of direct numerical simulations in three and two dimensions. In the mixing zone, the balance between gravity and viscous forces res…
We investigate the statistical properties of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence in a convective cell of high aspect ratio, in which one transverse side is much smaller that the others. We show that the scale of confinement determines the Bolgiano scale of the system, which in the late stage of the evolution is characterized by the Kolmogorov-Obukhov and the Bolgiano-Obukhov phenomenology at small and large scales, respectively. The coexistence of these regimes is associated to a three to two-dimensional transition of the system which occurs when the width of the turbulent mixing layer becomes larger t…
We report a novel measurement of the late time self-similar growth constant $α_B$ of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) from controlled initial perturbations. To this end, we have developed a laser-driven experiment, fielded on the National Ignition Facility (NIF), to explore deeply non-linear, multimode hydrodynamic growth of a planar interface. The measured value is $α_B=0.038\pm 0.008$, which is consistent with previously reported 2D simulations and closer to previously reported 3D simulations. This resolved the known discrepancy between experiments and simulations of RTI.
The question whether liquid atomization (or pulverization) resorts to instability dynamics (through refinements of Rayleigh-Plateau, Rayleigh-Taylor or Kelvin-Helmholtz mechanism) or to turbulent cascades similar to Richardson and Kolmogorov first ideas seems to be still open. In this paper, we report experimental evidences that both mechanisms are needed to explain the spray drop PDF obtained from an industrial nozzle. Instability of Rayleigh-Taylor kind governs the size of the largest droplets while the smallest ones obey a PDF given by a turbulent cascading mechanism resulting in a log-Lévy…
An increasing number of numerical simulations and experiments describing the turbulent spectrum of Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) mixing layers came to light over the past few years. Results reported in recent studies allow to rule out a turbulence {\it à la Kolmogorov} as a mechanism acting on a self similar RT turbulent mixing layer. A different mechanism is presented, which complies with both numerical and experimental results and relates RT flow to other buoyant flows.
The dynamics of Rayleigh-Taylor turbulence convection in presence of an alternating, time periodic acceleration is studied by means of extensive direct numerical simulations of the Boussinesq equations. Within this framework, we discover a new mechanism of relaminarization of turbulence: The alternating acceleration, which initially produces a growing turbulent mixing layer, at longer times suppresses turbulent fluctuation and drives the system toward an asymptotic stationary configuration. Dimensional arguments and linear stability theory are used to predict the width of the mixing layer in t…
The single-mode Rayleigh-Taylor instability (smRTI) is well defined, poorly understood, and applicable to many fluid flows directly and through its relationship to multi-mode Rayleigh-Taylor models. This study reproduces three low-Atwood smRTI experimental runs (Wilkinson and Jacobs, 2007) in a specialized version of the Nek5000 spectral element code. The simulations use the initial amplitude, wavelength, acceleration, Atwood number, and viscosity from the three specific experiments and impose no-slip and no-flux boundaries on the velocity and scalar, respectively. The simulations are shown to…
We develop a multicomponent lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for the 2D Rayleigh--Taylor turbulence with a Shan-Chen pseudopotential implemented on GPUs. In the immiscible case this method is able to accurately overcome the inherent numerical complexity caused by the complicated structure of the interface that appears in the fully developed turbulent regime. Accuracy of the LB model is tested both for early and late stages of instability. For the developed turbulent motion we analyze the balance between different terms describing variations of the kinetic and potential energies. Then, we analyze t…
The Rayleigh-Taylor instability is a key process in many fields of Physics ranging from astrophysics to inertial confinement fusion. It is usually analyzed deriving the linearized fluid equations, but the physics behind the instability is not always clear. Recent works on this instability allow for an very intuitive understanding of the phenomenon and for a straightforward calculation of the linear growth rate. In this Letter, it is shown that the same reasoning allows for a direct derivation of the relativistic expression of the linear growth rate for an incompressible fluid.
Quantum turbulence (QT) generated by the Rayleigh-Taylor instability in binary immiscible ultracold 87Rb atoms at zero temperature is studied theoretically. We show that the quantum vortex tangle is qualitatively different from previously considered superfluids, which reveals deep relations between QT and classical turbulence. The present QT may be generated at arbitrarily small Mach numbers, which is a unique property not found in previously studied superfluids. By numerical solution of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations we find that the Kolmogorov scaling law holds for the incompressible…
Rayleigh-Taylor (RT) mixing has critical importance for a broad range of process in nature and technology, from supernovae and plasma fusion to oil recovery and nano-fabrication. In most instances, RT flows are driven by variable acceleration, whereas the bulk of existing studies have considered only constant and impulsive accelerations. By analyzing symmetries of RT dynamics for certain patterns of variable acceleration, we discover a special class of self-similar solutions and identify their scaling, correlations and spectra. We find that dynamics of RT mixing can vary from super-ballistic t…
