We explore the potential of cross-correlating galaxies and peculiar velocities on non-linear scales to enhance cosmological constraints. Leveraging the \textsc{AbacusSummit} simulation suite and the halo occupation distribution (HOD) formalism, we train emulator models to describe the non-linear clustering of galaxies and velocities in redshift space. Our analysis demonstrates that combining galaxy and peculiar velocity clustering, provides tighter constraints on both HOD and cosmological parameters, particularly on $σ_8$ and $w_0$. We further apply our models to realistic mock catalogues, reproducing the expected density and peculiar velocity errors of type-Ia supernovae and Tully-Fisher/fundamental plane measurements for the combined ZTF and DESI measurements. While systematic biases arise in the HOD parameters, the cosmological constraints remain unbiased, yielding $3.8\%$ precision measurement on $fσ_8$ compared to $4.7\%$ using galaxy clustering alone. We demonstrate that, while combining tracers with realistic velocity measurements still yields improvement, the gains are diminished, highlighting the need for further efforts to reduce velocity measurement uncertainties and correct observational systematics on small scales.
The combination of galaxy-galaxy lensing (GGL) with galaxy clustering is one of the most promising routes to determining the amplitude of matter clustering at low redshifts. We show that extending clustering+GGL analyses from the linear regime down to $\sim 0.5 \, h^{-1}$ Mpc scales increases their constraining power considerably, even after marginalizing over a flexible model of non-linear galaxy bias. Using a grid of cosmological N-body simulations, we construct a Taylor-expansion emulator that predicts the galaxy autocorrelation $ξ_{\text{gg}}(r)$ and galaxy-matter cross-correlation $ξ_{\te…
Galaxy peculiar velocities provide an integral source of cosmological information that can be harnessed to measure the growth rate of large scale structure and constrain possible extensions to General Relativity. In this work, we present a method for extracting the information contained within galaxy peculiar velocities through an ensemble of direct peculiar velocity and galaxy clustering correlation statistics, including the effects of redshift space distortions, using data from the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey. Our method compares the auto- and cross-correlation function multipoles of these …

The linear matter power spectrum is an essential ingredient in all theoretical models for interpreting large-scale-structure observables. Although Boltzmann codes such as CLASS or CAMB are very efficient at computing the linear spectrum, the analysis of data usually requires $10^4$-$10^6$ evaluations, which means this task can be the most computationally expensive aspect of data analysis. Here, we address this problem by building a neural network emulator that provides the linear theory (total and cold) matter power spectrum in about one millisecond with 0.2% (0.5%) accuracy over redshifts $z …
Peculiar motion introduces systematic variations in the observed luminosity distribution of galaxies. This allows one to constrain the cosmic peculiar velocity field from large galaxy redshift surveys. Using around half a million galaxies from the SDSS Data Release 7 at z ~ 0.1, we demonstrate the applicability of this approach to large datasets and obtain bounds on peculiar velocity moments and $σ_{8}$, the amplitude of the linear matter power spectrum. Our results are in good agreement with the $Λ$CDM model and consistent with the previously reported ~ 1% zero-point tilt in the SDSS photomet…
Peculiar-velocity surveys of the low-redshift universe have significant leverage to constrain the growth rate of cosmic structure and test gravity. Wide-field imaging surveys combined with multi-object spectrographs (e.g. ZTF2, LSST, DESI, 4MOST) can use Type Ia supernovae as informative tracers of the velocity field, reaching few percent constraints on the growth rate $fσ_8$ at $z\lesssim0.2$ where density tracers cannot do better than $\sim10\%$. Combining the high-redshift DESI survey mapping redshift space distortions with a low-redshift supernova peculiar velocity survey using LSST and DE…

GW number count can be used as a novel tracer of the large scale structure (LSS) in the luminosity distance space (LDS), just like galaxies in the redshift space. It is possible to obtain the $D_L-D_A$ duality relation with clustering effect. However, several LSS induced errors will contaminate the GW luminosity distance measurement, such as the peculiar velocity dispersion error of the host galaxy as well as the foreground lensing magnification. The distance uncertainties induced from these effects will degrade the GW clustering from a spectroscopic-like data down to a photometric-like data. …
The theoretical basis of dark energy remains unknown and could signify a need to modify the laws of gravity on cosmological scales. In this study we investigate how the clustering and motions of galaxies can be used as probes of modified gravity theories, using galaxy and direct peculiar velocity auto- and cross-correlation functions. We measure and fit these correlation functions in simulations of $Λ$CDM, DGP, and $f(R)$ cosmologies and, by extracting the characteristic parameters of each model, we show that these theories can be distinguished from General Relativity using these measurements.…

In the framework of the stochastic theory for hierarchical clustering, we investigate the time-dependent solutions of the Fokker-Planck equation describing the statistics of dark matter halos, and discuss the typical timescales needed for these to converge toward stationary states, far away enough from initial conditions. Although we show that the stationary solutions can reproduce the outcomes of state-of-the-art $N-$body simulations at $z\approx 0$ to a great accuracy, one needs to go beyond to fully account for the cosmic evolution of the simulated halo mass function toward high-redshift. We present $\it{CosmoPower}$, a suite of neural cosmological power spectrum emulators providing orders-of-magnitude acceleration for parameter estimation from two-point statistics analyses of Large-Scale Structure (LSS) and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) surveys. The emulators replace the computation of matter and CMB power spectra from Boltzmann codes; thus, they do not need to be re-trained for different choices of astrophysical nuisance parameters or redshift distributions. The matter power spectrum emulation error is less than $0.4\%$ in the wavenumber range $k \in [10^{-5}, 10] \, \mat…
We consider some aspects of the perturbation to the luminosity distance $d(z)$ that are of relevance for SN1a cosmology and for future peculiar velocity surveys at non-negligible redshifts. 1) Previous work has shown that the correction to the lowest order perturbation $δd / d = -δv / c z$ has the peculiar characteristic that it appears to depend on the absolute state of motion of sources, rather than on their motion relative to that of the observer. The resolution of this apparent violation of the equivalence principle is that it is necessary to allow for evolution of the velocities with time…
Redshift-space distortions (RSD) generically affect any spatially-dependent observable that is mapped using redshift information. The effect on the observed clustering of galaxies is the primary example of this. This paper is devoted to another example: the effect of RSD on the apparent peculiar motions of tracers as inferred from their positions in redshift space (i.e. the observed distance). Our theoretical study is motivated by practical considerations, mainly, the direct estimation of the velocity power spectrum, which is preferably carried out using the tracer's redshift-space position (s…
We study the clustering of Gravitational Wave (GW) merger events and Supernovae IA (SN), as cosmic tracers in Luminosity Distance Space. We modify the publicly available CAMB code to numerically evaluate auto- and cross- power spectra for the different sources, including Luminosity Distance Space distortion effects generated by peculiar velocities and lensing convergence. We perform a multitracer Fisher analysis to forecast expected constraints on cosmological and GW bias coefficients, using outputs from hydrodinamical N-body simulations to determine the bias fiducial model and considering fut…
Observations of galaxy clustering are made in redshift space, which results in distortions to the underlying isotropic distribution of galaxies. These redshift-space distortions (RSD) not only degrade important features of the matter density field, such as the baryonic acoustic oscillation (BAO) peaks, but also pose challenges for the theoretical modelling of observational probes. Here we introduce an iterative nonlinear reconstruction algorithm to remove RSD effects from galaxy clustering measurements, and assess its performance by using mock galaxy catalogues. The new method is found to be a…
Long-short mode coupling during inflation, encoded in the squeezed bispectrum of curvature perturbations, induces a dependence of the local, small-scale power spectrum on long-wavelength perturbations, leading to a scale-dependent halo bias. While this scale dependence is absent in the large-scale limit for single-field inflation models that satisfy the consistency relation, certain models such as resonant non-Gaussianity show a peculiar behavior on intermediate scales. We reconsider the predictions for the halo bias in this model by working in Conformal Fermi Coordinates, which isolate the ph…

In this paper, we study how to directly measure the effect of peculiar velocities in the observed angular power spectra. We do this by constructing a new anti-symmetric estimator of Large Scale Structure using different dark matter tracers. We show that the Doppler term is the major component of our estimator and we show that we can measure it with a signal-to-noise ratio up to $\sim 50$ using a futuristic SKAO HI galaxy survey. We demonstrate the utility of this estimator by using it to provide constraints on the Euler equation.
The mapping of galaxy clustering from real space to redshift space introduces the anisotropic property to the measured galaxy density power spectrum in redshift space, known as the redshift space distortion (RSD) effect. The mapping formula is intrinsically non-linear, which is complicated by the higher order polynomials due to indefinite orders of cross correlations between density and velocity fields, and the Finger--of--God (FoG) effect due to the randomness of the galaxy peculiar velocity field. In previous works, we have verified the robustness of advanced TNS mapping formula in our hybri…
Spatial variations in the distribution of galaxy luminosities, estimated from redshifts as distance proxies, are correlated with the peculiar velocity field. Comparing these variations with the peculiar velocities inferred from galaxy redshift surveys is a powerful test of gravity and dark energy theories on cosmological scales. Using ~ 2 $\times$ 10$^{5}$ galaxies from the SDSS Data Release 7, we perform this test in the framework of gravitational instability to estimate the normalized growth rate of density perturbations f$σ_{8}$ = 0.37 +/- 0.13 at z ~ 0.1, which is in agreement with the $Λ$…

To understand the nature of the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we need to combine constraints on the expansion rate and growth of structure. The growth rate is usually extracted from three dimensional galaxy maps by exploiting the effects of peculiar motions on galaxy clustering. However, theoretical models of the probability distribution function (PDF) of galaxy pairwise peculiar velocities are not accurate enough on small scales to reduce the error on theoretical predictions to the level required to match the precision expected for measurements from future surveys. Here, we improve t…
We present a novel approach to disentangle two key contributions to the largest-scale anisotropy of the galaxy distribution: (i) the intrinsic dipole due to clustering and anisotropic geometry, and (ii) the kinematic dipole due to our peculiar velocity. Including the redshift and angular size of galaxies, in addition to their fluxes and positions allows us to measure both the direction and amplitude of our velocity independently of the intrinsic dipole of the source distribution. We find that this new approach applied to future galaxy surveys (LSST and Euclid) and a SKA radio continuum survey …
We study structure formation using relativistic cosmological linear perturbation theory in the presence of intrinsic and relative (with respect to matter) non-adiabatic dark energy perturbations. For different dark energy models we assess the impact of non-adiabaticity on the matter growth promoting a comparison with growth rate data. The dark energy models studied lead to peculiar signatures of the (non)adiabatic nature of dark energy perturbations in the evolution of the $f σ_{8}(z)$ observable. We show that non-adiabatic DE models become close to be degenerated with respect to the $Λ$CDM mo…
The clustering of galaxies in the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: measurements of the growth of structure and expansion rate at z=0.57 from anisotropic clustering

The peculiar velocities of biased tracers of the cosmic density field contain important information about the growth of large scale structure and generate anisotropy in the observed clustering of galaxies. Using N-body data, we show that velocity expansions for halo redshift-space power spectra are converged at the percent-level at perturbative scales for most line-of-sight angles $μ$ when the first three pairwise velocity moments are included, and that the third moment is well-approximated by a counterterm-like contribution. We compute these pairwise-velocity statistics in Fourier space using…
We investigate the necessary methodology to optimally measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal, from voids based on galaxy redshift catalogues. To this end, we study the dependency of the BAO signal on the population of voids classified by their sizes. We find for the first time the characteristic features of the correlation function of voids including the first robust detection of BAOs in mock galaxy catalogues. These show an anti-correlation around the scale corresponding to the smallest size of voids in the sample (the void exclusion effect), and dips at both sides of the BAO pe…
The peculiar velocity field measured by redshift-space distortions (RSD) in galaxy surveys provides a unique probe of the growth of large-scale structure. However, systematic effects arise when including satellite galaxies in the clustering analysis. Since satellite galaxies tend to reside in massive halos with a greater halo bias, the inclusion boosts the clustering power. In addition, virial motions of the satellite galaxies cause a significant suppression of the clustering power due to nonlinear RSD effects. We develop a novel method to recover the redshift-space power spectrum of halos fro…
The peculiar velocities of galaxies cause their redshift-space clustering to depend on the angle to the line-of-sight, providing a key test of gravitational physics on cosmological scales. These effects may be described using a multipole expansion of the clustering measurements. Focussing on Fourier-space statistics, we present a new analysis of the effect of the survey window function, and the variation of the line-of-sight across a survey, on the modelling of power spectrum multipoles. We determine the joint covariance of the Fourier-space multipoles in a Gaussian approximation, and indicate…
The peculiar motion of galaxies can be a particularly sensitive probe of gravitational collapse. As such, it can be used to measure the dynamics of dark matter and dark energy as well the nature of the gravitational laws at play on cosmological scales. Peculiar motions manifest themselves as an overall anisotropy in the measured clustering signal as a function of the angle to the line-of-sight, known as redshift-space distortion (RSD). Limiting factors in this measurement include our ability to model non-linear galaxy motions on small scales and the complexities of galaxy bias. The anisotropy …
The coming generation of galaxy surveys will provide measurements of galaxy clustering with unprecedented accuracy and data size, which will allow us to test cosmological models at much higher precision than achievable previously. This means that we must have more accurate theoretical predictions to compare with future observational data. As a first step towards more accurate modelling of the redshift space distortions (RSD) of small-scale galaxy clustering in modified gravity (MG) cosmologies, we investigate the validity of the so-called Skew-T (ST) probability distribution function (PDF) of …
Detecting and measuring a non-Gaussian signature of primordial origin in the density field is a major science goal of next-generation galaxy surveys. The signal will permit us to determine primordial physics processes and constrain models of cosmic inflation. While traditional approaches utilise a limited set of statistical summaries of the galaxy distribution to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity, we present a field-level approach by Bayesian forward-modelling the entire three-dimensional galaxy survey. Our method naturally and fully self-consistently exploits the entirety of the large-scal…
We present a Bayesian phase-space reconstruction of the cosmic large-scale matter density and velocity fields from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillations Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 (BOSS DR12) CMASS galaxy clustering catalogue. We rely on a given $Λ$CDM cosmology, a mesh resolution in the range of 6-10 $h^{-1}$ Mpc, and a lognormal-Poisson model with a redshift dependent nonlinear bias. The bias parameters are derived from the data and a general renormalised perturbation theory approach. We use combined Gibbs and Hamiltonian sampling, implemented in the \textsc{argo} code, to iteratively r…
We propose the use of angular fluctuations in the galaxy redshift field as a new way to extract cosmological information in the Universe. This new probe $δz (\hat{n})$ consists on the statistics of sky maps built by projecting redshifts under a Gaussian window of width $σ_z$ centred upon a redshift $z_{\rm obs}$, and weighted by the galaxy density field. We compute the angular power spectrum of the $δz (\hat{n})$ field in both numerical simulations and in linear perturbation theory. From these we find that the $δz (\hat{n})$ field: {\it (i)} is sensitive to the underlying density and peculiar …
We determine the dipole in the WISE galaxy catalogue. After reducing star contamination to <0.1% by rejecting sources with high apparent motion and those close to the Galactic plane, we eliminate low redshift sources to suppress the non-kinematic, clustering dipole. We remove sources within {\pm}5° of the super-galactic plane, as well as those within 1'' of 2MRS sources at redshift z < 0.03. We enforce cuts on the source angular extent to preferentially select distant ones. As we progress along these steps, the dipole converges in direction to within 5° of the CMB dipole and its magnitude also…
