Narrowband perfect absorbers are interesting for spectrum sensing, molecular detection, and infrared imaging. However, their design remains constrained by intuitive, iterative methods that lack flexibility, while also facing challenges in multi-objective optimization. Here, we introduce a deep learning-enabled inverse-design framework that overcomes these limitations through a conditional Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network (WGAN). The main contribution of this work is a dual-channel image encoding scheme that jointly represents the geometry and thickness of a Si$_3$N$_4$ meta-layer, facilitating the network to learn the distribution of viable structures for a target optical response. This approach naturally solves the inherent ``one-to-many'' design issue, giving a diverse portfolio of functional candidates from a single input spectrum. The designed absorbers achieve exceptional spectral fidelity, with resonance peak errors below 5 nm, a mean squared error (MSE) on the order of $10^{-3}$, and the capacity to produce over 10 distinct, high-performance designs per target. Furthermore, we demonstrate the model's robustness under oblique illumination, showing that it can be efficiently fine-tuned to maintain spectral accuracy across incidence angles from $10^\circ$ to $40^\circ$ by transfer learning, thus extending its practical utility to non-normal operating conditions. Full-wave simulations confirm that the generated geometries support a hybrid plasmonic-dielectric resonance, leading to near-perfect absorption and strong near-field enhancement. Our study provides a robust, physics-aware design paradigm that moves beyond conventional parametric optimization. The introduced framework establishes a versatile platform for the on-demand inverse design of advanced photonic devices for sensing, spectroscopy, and optical signal processing.
Based on an analytic approach, we present a theoretical review on the absorption, scattering, and extinction of both dipole scatterers and regular arrays composed of such scatterers i.e., metasurfaces. Besides offering a tutorial by outlining the maximum absorption limit for electrically/magnetically resonant dipole particles/metasurfaces, we give an educative analytical approach to their analysis. Moreover, we put forward the analysis of two known alternatives in providing perfect absorbers out of electrically and or magnetically resonant metasurfaces; one is based on the simultaneous presenc…
This article presents a novel approach for designing dual-band absorbers based on graphene and metallic metasurfaces for terahertz and mid-infrared regimes, respectively. The absorbers are composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of square patches deposited on a dielectric film terminated by a metal plate. Using an analytical circuit model, we obtain closed-form relations for different parameters of the structure to achieve the dual-band absorber. Two absorption bands with obtained absorptivity of 98% at 0.55 and 1.54 THz for the graphene-based structure and 7 and 25 THz for the metallic-based…
We demonstrate that the metamaterial perfect absorber behaves as a meta-cavity bounded between a resonant metasurface and a metallic thin-film reflector. The perfect absorption is achieved by the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance via multiple reflections between the "quasi-open" boundary of resonator and the "closed" boundary of reflector. The characteristic features including angle independence, ultra-thin thickness and strong field localization can be well explained by this model. With this model, metamaterial perfect absorber can be redefined as a meta-cavity exhibiting high Q-factor, strong fie…
We explored a metal-insulator-metasurface structure exhibiting dual-band absorption in the visible and infrared regions with almost perfect absorbance. We demonstrated that the existence of the dual peak absorbance is due to the excitation of propagating surface plasmon and localized surface plasmon mode. We further utilized the excited degenerate propagating surface plasmon to enhance the fluorescence emission of an emitter located on top of the metasurface. This was accomplished by engineering a metasurface that excites a degenerate mode with resonance absorption bands close to the emission …
Utilizing solar energy requires perfect absorption by photovoltaic cells for efficient conversion of solar energy into useful electrical energy. Metasurfaces can, not only be used to absorb solar energy efficiently but, they do so with thickness of structure in nano-scale -effectively reducing the size of the device. To achieve aforementioned feature metasurface absorbers are developed which give better absorbance on narrow/wide frequency spectrum. These absorbers are fashioned with variable structures employing variable materials but still, perfect absorbance is not attained with a simple two…

This paper presents fabrication, measurement and modelling results for a metal-dielectric-metal metasurface absorber for solar thermal applications. The structure uses amorphous carbon as an inter-layer between thin gold films with the upper film patterned with a 2D periodic array using focused ion beam etching. The patterned has been optimised to give high absorptance from 400-1200nm and low absorptance above this wavelength range to minimise thermal radiation and hence obtain higher temperature performance. Wide angle absorptance results are shown and detailed modelling of a realistic nanost…
Most applications of metasurfaces require excitation and control of both electric and magnetic surface currents. For such purpose, the metasurface must have a finite thickness to handle magnetic surface currents. For metasurface sheets of negligible thickness that offer only electric response, coherent illumination can compensate the need to create discontinuities of the tangential electric field component using magnetic surface currents. Most of known coherent metasurfaces are space-uniform and can control only plane-wave absorption and specular reflection. However, it is also known that peri…
Localized plasmons formed in ultrathin metallic nanogaps can lead to robust absorption of incident light. Plasmonic metasurfaces based on this effect can efficiently generate energetic charge carriers, also known as hot electrons, owing to their ability to squeeze and enhance electromagnetic fields in confined subwavelength spaces. However, it is very challenging to accurately identify and quantify the dynamics of hot carriers, mainly due to their ultrafast time decay. Their non-equilibrium temperature response is one of the key factors missing to understand the short time decay and overall tr…
We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. T…
In this study, we designed a metasurface based on Al/SiN/Al nano-sandwich optical absorbers. Parity-symmetric dark magnetic resonance modes, anti-symmetric bright magnetic resonance modes, and surface lattice modes are established simultaneously in such a meta-surface. By changing the structural parameters, the wavelength of the dark mode can be tuned to overlap with the lattice mode. Fano resonance is introduced by coupling between the dark and lattice modes. Angular-resolved thermal emission experiments showed that the thermal emission induced by Fano resonance exhibited a narrow wavelength …

We propose a tunable coherent perfect absorber based on ultrathin nonlinear metasurfaces. The nonlinear metasurface is made of plasmonic nanoantennas coupled to an epsilon-near-zero material with a large optical nonlinearity. The coherent perfect absorption is achieved by controlling the relative phases of the input beams. We show that the optical response of the nonlinear metasurface can be tuned from a complete to a partial absorption by changing the intensity of the pump beam. The proposed nonlinear metasurface can be used to design optically tunable thermal emitters, modulators, and sensor…
Metasurface saturable absorbers may result in versatile mode-locking that allows one to obtain stable ultrashort laser pulses with high repetition rates and peak powers, along with broadband operation, within fiber to solid-state laser cavities.
Absorption of terahertz waves by a metasurface comprising a biperiodic array of pixellated meta-atoms on top of a dielectric substrate backed by a perfect electric conductor was simulated using a commercial software, with either all or a few of the pixels in every meta-atom patched with graphene. Absorptances as high as 0.99 over a 1.16-THz-wide spectral regime for normal incidence were found for a metasurface comprising meta-atoms with only a few pixels patched with graphene, regardless of the polarization state. In comparison to metasurface absorbers comprising two graphene layers separated …
Enhancing absorption in optically thin semiconductors is the key in the development of high-performance optical and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we resort to the concept of degenerate critical coupling and design an ultra-thin semiconductor absorber composed of free-standing GaAs nanocylinder metasurfaces in the near infrared. The numerical results show that perfect absorption can be achieved through overlapping two Mie modes with opposite symmetry, with each mode contributing a theoretical maximum of 50% in their respective critical coupling state. The absorption also shows the pola…
Here we make use of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to design a bifunctional metasurface working at the same targeted frequency. With the increase of temperature, the functionality of the designed metasurface can switch from a multi-channel retroreflector to a perfect absorber, caused by the phase transition of VO2 from insulator to conductor. Different from traditional bifunctional metasurfaces designed by simple composition of two functionalities, our proposed bifunctional metasurface is based on the interaction between two functionalities. The device shows good potential for the combination of wavef…
We introduce an overlapping-domain approach to large-area metasurface design, in which each simulated domain consists of a unit cell and overlapping regions from the neighboring cells plus PML absorbers. We show that our approach generates greatly improved metalens quality compared to designs produced using a locally periodic approximation, thanks to $\sim 10\times$ better accuracy with similar computational cost. We use the new approach with topology optimization to design large-area ($200λ$) high-NA (0.71) multichrome and broadband achromatic lenses with high focusing efficiency ($\sim 50\%$…
Black phosphorus (BP), a relative new plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) material, offers unique photonic and electronic properties. In this work, we propose a new tunable and broadband ultrathin coherent perfect absorber (CPA) device operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. It is based on a bifacial metasurface made of BP patch periodic arrays separated by a thin dielectric layer. Broadband CPA bandwidth is realized due to the ultrathin thickness of the proposed device and the extraordinary properties of BP. In addition, a substantial modulation between CPA and complete transparency is a…
In analogy with electromagnetic networks which connect multiple input-output ports, metasurfaces can be considered as multi-port devices capable of providing different functionalities for waves of different polarizations illuminating the surface from different directions. The main challenge in the design of such multichannel metasurfaces is to ensure independent and full control of the electromagnetic response for each channel ensuring the fulilment of the boundary condition at the metasurface. In this work, we demonstrate that by properly engineering the evanescent fields excited at each port…
Modern nanophotonic and meta-optical devices utilize a tremendous number of structural degrees of freedom to enhance light--matter interactions. A fundamental question is how large such enhancements can be. We develop an analytical framework to derive upper bounds to single-frequency electromagnetic response, across near- and far-field regimes, for any materials, naturally incorporating the tandem effects of material- and radiation-induced losses. Our framework relies on a power-conservation law for the polarization fields induced in any scatterer. It unifies previous theories on optical scatt…
Monitoring and controlling the state of polarization of electromagnetic waves is of significant interest for various basic and practical applications such as linear position sensing and medical imaging. Here, we propose the first conformal digital metamaterial absorber to detect the polarization state of THz incident waves. The proposed polarimeter is capable of characterizing four independent polarization states of (TE, TM, $\pm {45^\circ}$ linear, and RCP/LCP) by observing the reflectivity of the structure with respect to the x- and y-direction. Besides, the proposed structure displays a str…
Tailoring critical light-matter coupling is a fundamental challenge of nanophotonics, impacting diverse fields from higher harmonic generation and energy conversion to surface-enhanced spectroscopy. Plasmonic perfect absorbers (PAs), where resonant antennas couple to their mirror images in adjacent metal films, have been instrumental for obtaining different coupling regimes by tuning the antenna-film distance. However, for on-chip uses, the ideal PA gap size can only match one wavelength, and wide range multispectral approaches remain challenging. Here, we introduce a new paradigm for plasmoni…
