We analyze single and multilayered metamaterials by modeling each layer as a metasurface with effective surface electric and magnetic susceptibility derived through a thin film approximation. Employing a transfer matrix method, these metasurfaces can be assembled into multilayered metamaterials to realize certain functionalities. We demonstrate numerically that this approach provides an alternative interpretation of metamaterial-based perfect absorption, showing that the underlying mechanism is a modified Fabry-Perot resonance. This method provides a general approach applicable for decoupled or weakly coupled multilayered metamaterials.

Based on an analytic approach, we present a theoretical review on the absorption, scattering, and extinction of both dipole scatterers and regular arrays composed of such scatterers i.e., metasurfaces. Besides offering a tutorial by outlining the maximum absorption limit for electrically/magnetically resonant dipole particles/metasurfaces, we give an educative analytical approach to their analysis. Moreover, we put forward the analysis of two known alternatives in providing perfect absorbers out of electrically and or magnetically resonant metasurfaces; one is based on the simultaneous presenc…
This article presents a novel approach for designing dual-band absorbers based on graphene and metallic metasurfaces for terahertz and mid-infrared regimes, respectively. The absorbers are composed of a two-dimensional (2D) array of square patches deposited on a dielectric film terminated by a metal plate. Using an analytical circuit model, we obtain closed-form relations for different parameters of the structure to achieve the dual-band absorber. Two absorption bands with obtained absorptivity of 98% at 0.55 and 1.54 THz for the graphene-based structure and 7 and 25 THz for the metallic-based…
We demonstrate that the metamaterial perfect absorber behaves as a meta-cavity bounded between a resonant metasurface and a metallic thin-film reflector. The perfect absorption is achieved by the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance via multiple reflections between the "quasi-open" boundary of resonator and the "closed" boundary of reflector. The characteristic features including angle independence, ultra-thin thickness and strong field localization can be well explained by this model. With this model, metamaterial perfect absorber can be redefined as a meta-cavity exhibiting high Q-factor, strong fie…
We explored a metal-insulator-metasurface structure exhibiting dual-band absorption in the visible and infrared regions with almost perfect absorbance. We demonstrated that the existence of the dual peak absorbance is due to the excitation of propagating surface plasmon and localized surface plasmon mode. We further utilized the excited degenerate propagating surface plasmon to enhance the fluorescence emission of an emitter located on top of the metasurface. This was accomplished by engineering a metasurface that excites a degenerate mode with resonance absorption bands close to the emission …
Utilizing solar energy requires perfect absorption by photovoltaic cells for efficient conversion of solar energy into useful electrical energy. Metasurfaces can, not only be used to absorb solar energy efficiently but, they do so with thickness of structure in nano-scale -effectively reducing the size of the device. To achieve aforementioned feature metasurface absorbers are developed which give better absorbance on narrow/wide frequency spectrum. These absorbers are fashioned with variable structures employing variable materials but still, perfect absorbance is not attained with a simple two…

Most applications of metasurfaces require excitation and control of both electric and magnetic surface currents. For such purpose, the metasurface must have a finite thickness to handle magnetic surface currents. For metasurface sheets of negligible thickness that offer only electric response, coherent illumination can compensate the need to create discontinuities of the tangential electric field component using magnetic surface currents. Most of known coherent metasurfaces are space-uniform and can control only plane-wave absorption and specular reflection. However, it is also known that peri…
We present a semianalytical method for designing meta-atoms in multilayered metasurfaces (MSs), relying on a rigorous model developed for multielement metagratings. Notably, this model properly accounts for near-field coupling effects, allowing reliable design even for extremely small interlayer spacings, verified via commercial solvers. This technique forms an appealing alternative to the common full-wave optimization employed for MS microscopic design to date.
In this study, we designed a metasurface based on Al/SiN/Al nano-sandwich optical absorbers. Parity-symmetric dark magnetic resonance modes, anti-symmetric bright magnetic resonance modes, and surface lattice modes are established simultaneously in such a meta-surface. By changing the structural parameters, the wavelength of the dark mode can be tuned to overlap with the lattice mode. Fano resonance is introduced by coupling between the dark and lattice modes. Angular-resolved thermal emission experiments showed that the thermal emission induced by Fano resonance exhibited a narrow wavelength …
Localized plasmons formed in ultrathin metallic nanogaps can lead to robust absorption of incident light. Plasmonic metasurfaces based on this effect can efficiently generate energetic charge carriers, also known as hot electrons, owing to their ability to squeeze and enhance electromagnetic fields in confined subwavelength spaces. However, it is very challenging to accurately identify and quantify the dynamics of hot carriers, mainly due to their ultrafast time decay. Their non-equilibrium temperature response is one of the key factors missing to understand the short time decay and overall tr…
We present an asymmetric bifacial graphene metasurface to realize tunable and broadband coherent perfect absorption (CPA) at terahertz (THz) frequencies. The proposed design is composed of two dissimilar graphene square patch metasurfaces stacked over an ultrathin dielectric substrate. Nonlinear CPA performance without resorting to optical nonlinearities and amplification are demonstrated based on wave interference phenomena taking place along and inside this subwavelength structure. Broadband asymmetric reflection from opposite directions is obtained in the case of single wave illumination. T…
Modeling of spherical metasurfaces using Generalized Sheet Transition Conditions (GSTCs) and Vector Wave Function (VWF) expansion is presented. The fields internal and external to the metasurface is expanded in terms of spherical VWFs and unknown coefficients. GSTCs are used to obtain linear relationships between the unknown coefficients. An overdetermined system of equations are then solved by point matching. The method is quasi-analytical and hence there is no need for meshing which is encountered in conventional computational electromagnetic methods. This results in the method being extreme…

Recent studies on fully dielectric multilayered metamaterials have shown that the negligibly small nonlocal effects (spatial dispersion) typically observed in the limit of deeply subwavelength layers may be significantly enhanced by peculiar boundary effects occurring in certain critical parameter regimes. These phenomena, observed so far in periodic and randomly disordered geometries, are manifested as strong differences between the exact optical response of finite-size metamaterial samples and the prediction from conventional effective-theory-medium models based on mixing formulae. Here, wit…

For dielectric multilayered metamaterials, the effective-parameter representation is known to be insensitive to geometrical features occurring at deeply subwavelength scales. However, recent studies on periodic and aperiodically ordered geometries have shown the existence of certain critical parameter regimes where this conventional wisdom is upended, as the optical response of finite-size samples may depart considerably from the predictions of standard effective-medium theory. In these regimes, characterized by a mixed evanescent/propagating light transport, different classes of spatial (dis)…
Coated and multicoated cylinder systems constitute an appealing metamaterial category, as they allow a very rich and highly tunable response, resulting from the interplay of the many different geometrical and material parameters involved. Here we derive and propose an effective medium approach for the detailed description and analysis of the electromagnetic wave propagation in such systems. In particular, we investigate infinitely-long multilayered cylinders with additional electric and magnetic surface conductivities at each interface. Our effective medium approach is based on the well known …
We propose a tunable coherent perfect absorber based on ultrathin nonlinear metasurfaces. The nonlinear metasurface is made of plasmonic nanoantennas coupled to an epsilon-near-zero material with a large optical nonlinearity. The coherent perfect absorption is achieved by controlling the relative phases of the input beams. We show that the optical response of the nonlinear metasurface can be tuned from a complete to a partial absorption by changing the intensity of the pump beam. The proposed nonlinear metasurface can be used to design optically tunable thermal emitters, modulators, and sensor…
Here we make use of vanadium dioxide (VO2) to design a bifunctional metasurface working at the same targeted frequency. With the increase of temperature, the functionality of the designed metasurface can switch from a multi-channel retroreflector to a perfect absorber, caused by the phase transition of VO2 from insulator to conductor. Different from traditional bifunctional metasurfaces designed by simple composition of two functionalities, our proposed bifunctional metasurface is based on the interaction between two functionalities. The device shows good potential for the combination of wavef…
Lithography-free metasurfaces composed of a nano-layered stack of materials are attractive not only due to their optical properties but also by virtue of fabrication simplicity and cost reduction of devices based on such structures. We demonstrate a multi-layer metasurface with engineered electromagnetic absorption in the mid-infrared (MIR) wavelength range. Characterisation of thin SiO$_2$ and Si films sandwiched between two Au layers by way of experimental absorption and thermal radiation measurements as well as finite difference time domain (FDTD) numerical simulations is presented. Absorption of terahertz waves by a metasurface comprising a biperiodic array of pixellated meta-atoms on top of a dielectric substrate backed by a perfect electric conductor was simulated using a commercial software, with either all or a few of the pixels in every meta-atom patched with graphene. Absorptances as high as 0.99 over a 1.16-THz-wide spectral regime for normal incidence were found for a metasurface comprising meta-atoms with only a few pixels patched with graphene, regardless of the polarization state. In comparison to metasurface absorbers comprising two graphene layers separated …
Enhancing absorption in optically thin semiconductors is the key in the development of high-performance optical and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we resort to the concept of degenerate critical coupling and design an ultra-thin semiconductor absorber composed of free-standing GaAs nanocylinder metasurfaces in the near infrared. The numerical results show that perfect absorption can be achieved through overlapping two Mie modes with opposite symmetry, with each mode contributing a theoretical maximum of 50% in their respective critical coupling state. The absorption also shows the pola…
Metamaterials and metasurfaces operating in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) offer a promising route towards next-generation photodetectors and devices for solar energy harvesting. While numerous metamaterials and metasurfaces using metals and semiconductors have been demonstrated, semimetals-based metasurfaces in the vis-NIR range are notably missing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a broadband metasurface superabsorber based on large area, semimetallic, van der Waals PtSe2 thin films in agreement with electromagnetic simulations. Our results show that PtSe2 is an ultrathin and scalabl…
Black phosphorus (BP), a relative new plasmonic two-dimensional (2D) material, offers unique photonic and electronic properties. In this work, we propose a new tunable and broadband ultrathin coherent perfect absorber (CPA) device operating in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. It is based on a bifacial metasurface made of BP patch periodic arrays separated by a thin dielectric layer. Broadband CPA bandwidth is realized due to the ultrathin thickness of the proposed device and the extraordinary properties of BP. In addition, a substantial modulation between CPA and complete transparency is a…
Modern nanophotonic and meta-optical devices utilize a tremendous number of structural degrees of freedom to enhance light--matter interactions. A fundamental question is how large such enhancements can be. We develop an analytical framework to derive upper bounds to single-frequency electromagnetic response, across near- and far-field regimes, for any materials, naturally incorporating the tandem effects of material- and radiation-induced losses. Our framework relies on a power-conservation law for the polarization fields induced in any scatterer. It unifies previous theories on optical scatt…
