We investigate the disordered perovskite BaCu$_{1/3}$Ta$_{2/3}$O$_3$, where Cu (spin-1/2) and Ta randomly occupy a pseudo-cubic lattice. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy establish the local nature of the disorder, revealing the presence of structurally constrained magnetic exchange paths. No magnetic ordering or spin freezing is observed down to 0.1 K. The low-temperature magnetic and thermodynamic behavior is captured by a broad but non-singular distribution $P(J)$ of exchange couplings $J$. These results open the possibility of realizing a disordered quantum ground state where the exchange randomness is broad yet intrinsically bounded, departing from the conventional infinite-randomness fixed point driven random-singlet phase.
The disordered quasi-1D magnet BaCu2SiGeO7 is considered as one of the best physical realizations of the random Heisenberg chain model, which features an irregular distribution of the exchange parameters and whose ground state is predicted to be the scarcely investigated random-singlet state (RSS). Based on extensive 29Si NMR and magnetization studies of BaCu2SiGeO7, combined with numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain remarkable quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of the random Heisenberg chain model and strong indications for the formation of a random-singlet st…

We report an unusual magnetic ground state in single-crystal, double-perovskite Ba2YIrO6 and Sr doped Ba2YIrO6 with Ir5+(5d4) ions. Long-range magnetic order below 1.7 K is confirmed by DC magnetization, AC magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The observed magnetic order is extraordinarily delicate and cannot be explained in terms of either a low-spin S=1 state, or a singlet Jeff=0 state imposed by the spin-orbit interactions (SOI). Alternatively, the magnetic ground state appears consistent with a SOI that competes with comparable Hund's rule coupling and inherently large e…
Motivated by experimental observation of the non-magnetic phase in the compounds with frustration and disorder, we study the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ square-lattice Heisenberg model with randomly distributed nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ couplings. By using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation on cylinder system with circumference up to $10$ lattice sites, we identify a disordered phase between the Néel and stripe magnetic phase with growing $J_2 / J_1$ in the presence of strong bond randomness. The vanished spin-freezing parameter indicate…
We have performed magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation experiments to investigate the magnetic ground states of the 5$d^2$ double perovskites Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ and Sr$_2$InReO$_6$. We find that Sr$_2$YReO$_6$ is a spin glass, while Sr$_2$InReO$_6$ hosts a non-magnetic singlet state. By making detailed comparisons with other 5$d^2$ double perovskites, we argue that a delicate interplay between spin-orbit coupling, non-cubic crystal fields, and exchange interactions plays a key role in the great variation of magnetic ground states observed for…
We report on the unconventional magnetism in the cubic B-site ordered double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and muSR. No magnetic order is observed down to 2 K while the Weiss temperature is ~ -160 K. This is ascribed to the geometric frustration in the lattice of edge-sharing tetrahedra with orbitally degenerate Mo5+ s=1/2 spins. Our experimental results point to a gradual freezing of the spins into a disordered pattern of spin-singlets, quenching the orbital degeneracy while leaving the global cubic symmetry unaffected, and providing a rare exampl…
We synthesize and study single crystals of a new double-perovskite Sr2YIrO6. Despite two strongly unfavorable conditions for magnetic order, namely, pentavalent Ir5+(5d4) ions which are anticipated to have Jeff=0 singlet ground states in the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) limit, and geometric frustration in a face centered cubic structure formed by the Ir5+ ions, we observe this iridate to undergo a novel magnetic transition at temperatures below 1.3 K. We provide compelling experimental and theoretical evidence that the origin of magnetism is in an unusual interplay between strong non-cubic…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the 29Si spin-lattice relaxation time T1 were used to probe the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain compound BaCu2(Si(1-x)Gex)2O7. Remarkable differences between the pure (x = 0) and the fully random (x = 0.5) case are observed, indicating that randomness generates a distribution of local magnetic relaxations. This distribution, which is reflected in a stretched exponential NMR relaxation, exhibits a progressive broadening with decreasing temperature, caused by a growing inequivalence of magnetic sites. Compelling independent evidence for the influ…
Two B-site ordered double perovskites, La2LiMoO6 and Ba2YMoO6, based on the S = 1/2 ion, Mo5+, have been investigated in the context of geometric magnetic frustration. Powder neutron diffraction, heat capacity, susceptibility, muon spin relaxation(_SR), and 89Y NMR- including MAS NMR- data have been collected. La2LiMoO6 deviates strongly from simple Curie-Weiss paramagnetic behavior below 150K and zero-field cooled/ field cooled (ZFC/FC)irreversibility occurs below 20K with a weak, broad susceptibility maximum near 5K in the ZFC data. A Curie-Weiss fit shows a reduced mu_eff=1.42μ_B, (spin onl…
Combining quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the maximum entropy method, we study the dynamical structure factor $S(k,ω)$ of spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with various random bond distributions. We emphasize the crossover behavior in the dynamical properties from pure chain to disorder-dominated random singlet phase due to bond randomness. For the distribution corresponding to the infinite randomness fixed point, $S(k,ω)$ develops broad non-spinon excitations as well as the random-singlet peak near $(k, ω) = (π, 0)$, consistent with the known results obtained by the real-space…
Quantum magnetic properties in a geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, such as quantum spin liquid or solid and the associated spin fractionalization, are considered key in developing a new phase of matter. The feasibility of observing the quantum magnetic properties, usually found in geometrically frustrated lattice of spin-1/2 magnet, in a perovskite material with controlled disorder is demonstrated. It is found that the controlled chemical disorder, due to the chemical substitution of Ru ions by Co-ions, in a simple perovskite CaRuO3 creates a random prototype configuration o…
In this work, we investigate the local structural distortion of the double perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ by means of infrared transmission spectroscopy. At 300 K, three bands are observed at $\sim$ 255.1 cm$^{-1}$, $\sim$ 343.4 cm$^{-1}$, and $\sim$ 561.5 cm$^{-1}$, which are related to the motion between the cation Ba$^{2+}$ and the anion YMO$_6^{-2}$, the Y-O stretching motion and the stretching vibration of the MoO$_6$ octahedron, respectively. These modes continue to harden upon cooling owing to the shrink of the lattice constant. When the temperature decreases to $T \leq$ 130 K around which t…
Time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out on polycrystalline samples of the 4$d^3$ and 5$d^3$ double pervoskite antiferromagnets La$_2$LiRuO$_6$ and La$_2$LiOsO$_6$. These reveal the development of an inelastic spin gap in La$_2$LiRuO$_6$ and La$_2$LiOsO$_6$ of $\sim$ 1.8(8) meV and 6(1) meV, below their respective ordering temperatures, $T_N$, $\sim$ 23.8 K and 30 K. The bandwidth of the spin excitations is shown to be $\sim$ 5.7(9) to 12(1) meV, respectively, at low temperatures. Spin gaps are surprising in such magnets as the t$_{2g}$ levels of Ru$^{5+}$…
The geometrically frustrated double perovskite Ba2YMoO6 is characterized by quantum s=1/2 spins at the Mo5+ sites of an undistorted face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice. Previous low-temperature characterization revealed an absence of static long-range magnetic order and suggested a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state. We report new time-of-flight and triple-axis neutron spectroscopy of Ba2YMoO6 that shows a 28 meV spin excitation with a bandwidth of ~4 meV, which vanishes above ~125 K. We identify this as the singlet-triplet excitation out of a singlet ground state, and further identify a wea…
Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects of heavy $d$-orbital elements have long been neglected in describing the ground states of their compounds thereby overlooking a variety of fascinating and yet unexplored magnetic and electronic states, until recently. The spin-orbit entangled electrons in such compounds can get stabilized into unusual spin-orbit multiplet $J$-states which warrants severe investigations. Here we show using detailed magnetic and thermodynamic studies and theoretical calculations the ground state of Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$, a 6$H$ hexagonal perovskite is a close realisation of…
Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {\bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-…
We synthesized single crystals of composition Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ and investigated its quantum magnetic properties. The crystal structure is closely related to that of the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) dimerized magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ also known as Han purple. Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\,{=}\,20.8$ K. The magnetization curves for two different field directions almost perfectly coincide when normalized by the $g$-factor except for a small jump anomaly for a magnetic field perpendicular to the $c$ axis. The magnetization curve w…
Spin-orbit effects in heavy 5$d$ transition metal oxides, in particular, iridates, have received enormous current interest due to the prediction as well as the realization of a plethora of exotic and unconventional magnetic properties. While a bulk of these works are based on tetravalent iridates ($d^5$), where the counter-intuitive insulating state of the rather extended 5$d$ orbitals are explained by invoking strong spin-orbit coupling, the recent quest in iridate research has shifted to the other valencies of Ir, of which pentavalent iridates constitute a notable representative. In contrast…
Neutron spectroscopy has revealed a highly unusual magnetic structure and dynamics in YVO$_3$, an insulating pseudocubic perovskite that undergoes a series of temperature induced phase transitions between states with different spin and orbital ordering patterns. A good description of the neutron data is obtained by a theoretical analysis of the spin and orbital correlations of a realistic one-dimensional model. This leads to the tentative identification of one of the phases of YVO$_3$ with the ``orbital Peierls state'', a theoretically proposed many-body state comprised of orbital singlet bond…
The double-perovskite compounds Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ and Sr$_2$CuWO$_6$ are magnetically described as quasi-two-dimensional spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1{-}J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets with predominant $J_1$ and $J_2$ exchange interactions, respectively. We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ with randomness in the magnitudes of $J_1$ and $J_2$. It was found that the low-temperature specific heat for $0.1\leq x \leq 0.5$ has a large component proportional to the temperature $T$ above 1.2 K, although the low-temperature specific heat for the two parent s…
$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic catio…
In Mott insulators with the t^4_{2g} electronic configuration such as of Re^{3+}, Ru^{4+}, Os^{4+}, and Ir^{5+} ions, spin-orbit coupling dictates a Van Vleck-type nonmagnetic ground state with angular momentum J=0, and the magnetic response is governed by gapped singlet-triplet excitations. We derive the exchange interactions between these excitons and study their collective behavior on different lattices. In perovskites, a conventional Bose condensation of excitons into a magnetic state is found, while an unexpected one-dimensional behavior supporting spin-liquid states emerges in honeycomb …
More than 50 years ago the electron-hole attraction was proposed to drive narrow gap semiconductors or semimetals to a new phase, the excitonic insulator. The experimental proof of its existence in bulk materials remains elusive. In strongly correlated insulators, the proximity of the excitonic insulator phase is reflected by the presence of dispersive electron-hole excitations with a small gap above a singlet ground state. Recently, such an excitation spectrum was proposed to be realized in perovskite oxide LaCoO$_3$. In this Letter we use Co $L_3$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering to …
We investigate magnetic excitations in iridium insulators with pentavalent Ir$^{5+}$ ($5d^4$) ions with strong spin-orbit coupling. We obtain a microscopic model based on the local Ir$^{5+}$ multiplets involving $J=0$ (singlet), $J=1$ (triplet), and $J=2$ (quintet) spin-orbital states. We get effective interactions between these multiplets on square and face-centered-cubic (fcc) structures of magnetic ions in the layered-perovskites and the double-perovkites, in particular Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$. Further, we derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian in terms of bond bosons and explore possible inst…
Structure with orbital degeneracy is unstable toward spontaneous distortion. Such orbital correlation usually has a much higher energy scale than spins, and therefore, magnetic transition takes place at a much lower temperature, almost independently from orbital ordering. However, when the energy scales of orbitals and spins meet, there is a possibility of spin-orbital entanglement that would stabilize novel ground state such as spin-orbital liquid and random singlet state. Here we review on such a novel spin-orbital magnetism found in the hexagonal perovskite oxide Ba$_3$CuSb$_2$O$_9$, which …
A simple consistency check is proposed for the Fermi liquid description of the low-temperature properties of quasi-two-dimensional metals. In a quasi-two-dimensional Fermi liquid the Zeeman splitting of magnetic oscillations can be used to determine g^*, the gyro-magnetic ratio which is renormalised by many-body effects. It is shown that g^*/g is equal to Wilson's ratio R, the dimensionless ratio of the low-temperature spin susceptibility to the specific heat coefficient. Measured values of g^*/g and R are compared for the layered perovskite Sr2RuO4 and for a range of organic metals based on t…
We carried out AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy on the cubic double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, down to 50 mK. Below ~1 K the muon relaxation is typical of a magnetic insulator with a spin-liquid type ground state, i.e. without broken symmetries or frozen moments. However, the AC susceptibility revealed a dilute-spin-glass like transition below ~ 1 K. Antiferromagnetically coupled Mo5+ 4d1 electrons in triply degenerate t2g orbitals are in this material arranged in a geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. Bulk magnetic susceptibility data has previously bee…
