We present MOSAIC-GS, a novel, fully explicit, and computationally efficient approach for high-fidelity dynamic scene reconstruction from monocular videos using Gaussian Splatting. Monocular reconstruction is inherently ill-posed due to the lack of sufficient multiview constraints, making accurate recovery of object geometry and temporal coherence particularly challenging. To address this, we leverage multiple geometric cues, such as depth, optical flow, dynamic object segmentation, and point tracking. Combined with rigidity-based motion constraints, these cues allow us to estimate preliminary 3D scene dynamics during an initialization stage. Recovering scene dynamics prior to the photometric optimization reduces reliance on motion inference from visual appearance alone, which is often ambiguous in monocular settings. To enable compact representations, fast training, and real-time rendering while supporting non-rigid deformations, the scene is decomposed into static and dynamic components. Each Gaussian in the dynamic part of the scene is assigned a trajectory represented as time-dependent Poly-Fourier curve for parameter-efficient motion encoding. We demonstrate that MOSAIC-GS achieves substantially faster optimization and rendering compared to existing methods, while maintaining reconstruction quality on par with state-of-the-art approaches across standard monocular dynamic scene benchmarks.
Visual-inertial odometry (VIO) is the pose estimation backbone for most AR/VR and autonomous robotic systems today, in both academia and industry. However, these systems are highly sensitive to the initialization of key parameters such as sensor biases, gravity direction, and metric scale. In practical scenarios where high-parallax or variable acceleration assumptions are rarely met (e.g. hovering aerial robot, smartphone AR user not gesticulating with phone), classical visual-inertial initialization formulations often become ill-conditioned and/or fail to meaningfully converge. In this paper …

Monocular depth estimation is an interesting and challenging problem as there is no analytic mapping known between an intensity image and its depth map. Recently there has been a lot of data accumulated through depth-sensing cameras, in parallel to that researchers started to tackle this task using various learning algorithms. In this paper, a deep sparse coding method is proposed for monocular depth estimation along with an approach for deterministic dictionary initialization.

Supervised learning based methods for monocular depth estimation usually require large amounts of extensively annotated training data. In the case of aerial imagery, this ground truth is particularly difficult to acquire. Therefore, in this paper, we present a method for self-supervised learning for monocular depth estimation from aerial imagery that does not require annotated training data. For this, we only use an image sequence from a single moving camera and learn to simultaneously estimate depth and pose information. By sharing the weights between pose and depth estimation, we achieve a r…
Medical endoscopy remains a challenging application for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) due to the sparsity of image features and size constraints that prevent direct depth-sensing. We present a SLAM approach that incorporates depth predictions made by an adversarially-trained convolutional neural network (CNN) applied to monocular endoscopy images. The depth network is trained with synthetic images of a simple colon model, and then fine-tuned with domain-randomized, photorealistic images rendered from computed tomography measurements of human colons. Each image is paired with an …

3D human pose and shape recovery from a monocular RGB image is a challenging task. Existing learning based methods highly depend on weak supervision signals, e.g. 2D and 3D joint location, due to the lack of in-the-wild paired 3D supervision. However, considering the 2D-to-3D ambiguities existed in these weak supervision labels, the network is easy to get stuck in local optima when trained with such labels. In this paper, we reduce the ambituity by optimizing multiple initializations. Specifically, we propose a three-stage framework named Multi-Initialization Optimization Network (MION). In th…

Many monocular visual SLAM algorithms are derived from incremental structure-from-motion (SfM) methods. This work proposes a novel monocular SLAM method which integrates recent advances made in global SfM. In particular, we present two main contributions to visual SLAM. First, we solve the visual odometry problem by a novel rank-1 matrix factorization technique which is more robust to the errors in map initialization. Second, we adopt a recent global SfM method for the pose-graph optimization, which leads to a multi-stage linear formulation and enables L1 optimization for better robustness to …

We propose a new approach for combining deep-learned non-metric monocular depth with affine correspondences (ACs) to estimate the relative pose of two calibrated cameras from a single correspondence. Considering the depth information and affine features, two new constraints on the camera pose are derived. The proposed solver is usable within 1-point RANSAC approaches. Thus, the processing time of the robust estimation is linear in the number of correspondences and, therefore, orders of magnitude faster than by using traditional approaches. The proposed 1AC+D solver is tested both on synthetic …

Initialization is essential to monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problems. This paper focuses on a novel initialization method for monocular SLAM based on planar features. The algorithm starts by homography estimation in a sliding window. It then proceeds to a global plane optimization (GPO) to obtain camera poses and the plane normal. 3D points can be recovered using planar constraints without triangulation. The proposed method fully exploits the plane information from multiple frames and avoids the ambiguities in homography decomposition. We validate our algorithm on the…

This paper presents an online initialization method for bootstrapping the optimization-based monocular visual-inertial odometry (VIO). The method can online calibrate the relative transformation (spatial) and time offsets (temporal) among camera and IMU, as well as estimate the initial values of metric scale, velocity, gravity, gyroscope bias, and accelerometer bias during the initialization stage. To compensate for the impact of time offset, our method includes two short-term motion interpolation algorithms for the camera and IMU pose estimation. Besides, it includes a three-step process to i…

We present a generative method to estimate 3D human motion and body shape from monocular video. Under the assumption that starting from an initial pose optical flow constrains subsequent human motion, we exploit flow to find temporally coherent human poses of a motion sequence. We estimate human motion by minimizing the difference between computed flow fields and the output of an artificial flow renderer. A single initialization step is required to estimate motion over multiple frames. Several regularization functions enhance robustness over time. Our test scenarios demonstrate that optical fl…

Human reconstruction and synthesis from monocular RGB videos is a challenging problem due to clothing, occlusion, texture discontinuities and sharpness, and framespecific pose changes. Many methods employ deferred rendering, NeRFs and implicit methods to represent clothed humans, on the premise that mesh-based representations cannot capture complex clothing and textures from RGB, silhouettes, and keypoints alone. We provide a counter viewpoint to this fundamental premise by optimizing a SMPL+D mesh and an efficient, multi-resolution texture representation using only RGB images, binary silhouet…

Mobile AR applications benefit from fast initialization to display world-locked effects instantly. However, standard visual odometry or SLAM algorithms require motion parallax to initialize (see Figure 1) and, therefore, suffer from delayed initialization. In this paper, we present a 6-DoF monocular visual odometry that initializes instantly and without motion parallax. Our main contribution is a pose estimator that decouples estimating the 5-DoF relative rotation and translation direction from the 1-DoF translation magnitude. While scale is not observable in a monocular vision-only setting, i…
This paper presents a hybrid real-time camera pose estimation framework with a novel partitioning scheme and introduces motion averaging to monocular Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) systems. Breaking through the limitations of fixed-size temporal partitioning in many conventional SLAM pipelines, our approach significantly improves the accuracy of local bundle adjustment by gathering spatially-strongly-connected cameras into each block. With the dynamic initialization using intermediate computation values, \XL{we improve the Levenberg-Marquardt solver to further enhance the efficie…
