We establish $L^p$-universal approximation theorems for general path-dependent and non-anticipative functionals on suitable rough path spaces, showing that linear functionals acting on signatures of time-extended rough paths are dense with respect to the $L^p$-distance. To that end, we derive global universal approximation theorems for weighted rough path spaces. We demonstrate that these $L^p$-universal approximation theorems apply to Gaussian processes, in particular, to fractional Brownian motion. As a consequence, linear functionals on the signature of the time-extended Brownian motion can approximate any $p$-integrable stochastic process adapted to the Brownian filtration, including solutions to stochastic differential equations.
The signature of Brownian motion in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ over a running time interval $[0,T]$ is the collection of all iterated Stratonovich path integrals along the Brownian motion. We show that, in dimension $d\geq 2$, almost all Brownian motion sample paths (running up to time $T$) are determined by its signature over $[0,T]$
The signature of a $d$-dimensional Brownian motion is a sequence of iterated Stratonovich integrals along the Brownian paths, an object taking values in the tensor algebra over $\RR^{d}$. In this note, we derive the exact rate of convergence for the expected signatures of piecewise linear approximations to Brownian motion. The computation is based on the identification of the set of words whose coefficients are of the leading order, and the convergence is concentrated on this subset of words. Moreover, under the choice of projective tensor norm, we give the explicit value of the leading term c…
The signature of a path γis a sequence whose n-th term is the order-n iterated integrals of γ. It arises from solving multidimensional linear differential equations driven by γ. We are interested in relating the path properties of γwith its signature. If γis C^{1}, then an elegant formula of Hambly and Lyons relates the length of γto the tail asymptotics of the signature. We show an analogous formula for the multidimensional Brownian motion, with the quadratic variation playing a similar role to the length. In the proof, we study the hyperbolic development of Brownian motion and also obtain a …
The expected signature is an analogue of the Laplace transform for rough paths. Chevyrev and Lyons showed that, under certain moment conditions, the expected signature determines the laws of signatures. Lyons and Ni posed the question of whether the expected signature of Brownian motion up to the exit time of a domain satisfies Chevyrev and Lyons' moment condition. We provide the first example where the answer is negative.
It is proved that the mean signature of multi-dimensional fractional brownian motion admits a meromorphic continuation in the hurst parameter to the entire complex plane. Each contstituent mean iterated integral is a sum of hypergeometric integrals indexed by the pair partitions which refine the partition arising from the sequential list of integrands which defines it. Furthermore, each such hypergeometric integral is holomorphic in the complement of a finite union of rational progressions determined by the combinatorial structure of the pair partition which defines it. It is not proved that t…
We investigate the extent to which the phenomenon of Brownian entropic repulsion is universal. Consider a Brownian motion conditioned on the event $\mathcal{E}$ -- that its local time is bounded everywhere by 1. This event has probability zero and so must be approximated by events of positive probability. We prove that several natural quantities, in particular the speed of the process, are highly sensitive to the approximation procedure, and hence are not universal. However, we also propose an exponent $κ$ -- which measures the strength of the entropic repulsion by evaluating the probability t…
In this work we present different results concerning the signature and the cubature of fractional Brownian motion (fBm). The first result regards the rate of convergence of the expected signature of the linear piecewise approximation of the fBm to its exact value, for a value of the Hurst parameter $H\in(\frac{1}{2},1)$. We show that the rate of convergence is given by $2H$. We believe that this rate is sharp as it is consistent with the result of Ni and Xu, who showed that the sharp rate of convergence for the Brownian motion (i.e. fBm with $H=\frac{1}{2}$) is given by $1$. The second result …
The signature of a path provides a top down description of the path in terms of its effects as a control [Differential Equations Driven by Rough Paths (2007) Springer]. The signature transforms a path into a group-like element in the tensor algebra and is an essential object in rough path theory. The expected signature of a stochastic process plays a similar role to that played by the characteristic function of a random variable. In [Chevyrev (2013)], it is proved that under certain boundedness conditions, the expected value of a random signature already determines the law of this random signa…
We discuss the distributions of three functionals of the free Brownian bridge: its $Ł^2$-norm, the second component of its signature and its Lévy area. All of these are freely infinitely divisible. We introduce two representations of the free Brownian bridge as series of free semicircular random variables are used, analogous to the Fourier representations of the classical Brownian bridge due to \ts{Lévy} and \ts{Kac}.
We investigate the behaviour of a finite chain of Brownian particles, interacting through a pairwise potential $U$, with one end of the chain fixed and the other end pulled away, in the limit of slow pulling speed and small Brownian noise. We study the instant when and the place where the chain "breaks", that is, the distance between two neighbouring particles becomes larger than a certain threshold. We assume $U$ to be attractive and strictly convex up to the break distance, and three times continuously differentiable. We consider the regime, where both the pulling and the noise significantly…
The goal of this paper is to simplify and strengthen the Le Jan-Qian approximation scheme of studying the uniqueness of signature problem to the non-Markov setting. We establish a general framework for a class of multidimensional stochastic processes over [0,1] under which with probability one, the signature (the collection of iterated path integrals in the sense of rough paths) is well-defined and determines the sample paths of the process up to reparametrization. In particular, by using the Malliavin calculus we show that our method applies to a class of Gaussian processes including fraction…
We study the density of the signature of fractional Brownian motions with parameter $H>1/4$. In particular, we prove existence, smoothness, global Gaussian upper bounds and Varadhan's type asymptotics for this density. A key result is that the estimates on the density we obtain are controlled by the Carnot-Carathéodory distance of the group.
We prove the central limit theorem of random variables induced by distances to Brownian paths and Green functions on the universal cover of Riemannian manifolds of finite volume with pinched negative curvature. We further provide some ergodic properties of Brownian motions and an application of the central limit theorem to the dynamics of geodesic flows in pinched negative curvature.
We study the order statistics of one dimensional branching Brownian motion in which particles either diffuse (with diffusion constant $D$), die (with rate $d$) or split into two particles (with rate $b$). At the critical point $b=d$ which we focus on, we show that, at large time $t$, the particles are collectively bunched together. We find indeed that there are two length scales in the system: (i) the diffusive length scale $\sim \sqrt{Dt}$ which controls the collective fluctuations of the whole bunch and (ii) the length scale of the gap between the bunched particles $\sim \sqrt{D/b}$. We comp…
The signature of a parametric curve is a sequence of tensors whose entries are iterated integrals. This construction is central to the theory of rough paths in stochastic analysis. It is here examined through the lens of algebraic geometry. We introduce varieties of signature tensors for both deterministic paths and random paths. For the former, we focus on piecewise linear paths, on polynomial paths, and on varieties derived from free nilpotent Lie groups. For the latter, we focus on Brownian motion and its mixtures.
We introduce and study a universal model of random geometry in two dimensions. To this end, we start from a discrete graph drawn on the sphere, which is chosen uniformly at random in a certain class of graphs with a given size $n$, for instance the class of all triangulations of the sphere with $n$ faces. We equip the vertex set of the graph with the usual graph distance rescaled by the factor $n^{-1/4}$. We then prove that the resulting random metric space converges in distribution as $n\to\infty$, in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, toward a limiting random compact metric space called the Brownia…
We investigate statistics of lead changes of the maxima of two discrete-time random walks in one dimension. We show that the average number of lead changes grows as $π^{-1}\ln(t)$ in the long-time limit. We present theoretical and numerical evidence that this asymptotic behavior is universal. Specifically, this behavior is independent of the jump distribution: the same asymptotic underlies standard Brownian motion and symmetric Levy flights. We also show that the probability to have at most n lead changes behaves as $t^{-1/4}[\ln t]^n$ for Brownian motion and as $t^{-β(μ)}[\ln t]^n$ for symmet…
We show that the squared maximal height of the top path among $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges starting and ending at the origin is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random matrix drawn from the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble. This result can be thought of as a discrete version of K. Johansson's result that the supremum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola has the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution, and as such it provides an explanation for how this distribution arises in models belonging to the KPZ universality class with flat initial data. The result can be recast in terms of the prob…
