Photonic integrated Brillouin lasers have emerged as an important tool to realize a wide range of precision applications, including atomic time-keeping, low-noise microwave signal generation, fiber and quantum sensing, and ultra-high capacity coherent communications. While Brillouin lasers routinely achieve sub-Hz instantaneous linewidths, many of these applications also require exceptional frequency stability and high-power single-mode emission. A recent demonstration showed that extending the resonator length increases the laser power while also improving the frequency stability through suppression of thermorefractive noise. However, as the resonator scales to larger lengths, multiple optical resonances can be found within the Brillouin gain bandwidth, greatly complicating the laser dynamics compared to existing coupled-mode Brillouin laser models. Given the potential to scale lasers of this type to watt-level output powers at sub-mHz linewidths, a theoretical model describing this physics is needed to provide key insights into their performance. Here, we develop a coupled-mode theory of integrated large mode volume Brillouin lasers, accounting for multiple cavity modes with potential to lase within the gain bandwidth. We obtain expressions for the steady-state dynamics, spontaneous spectrum, relative intensity noise, and frequency noise. Our analysis reveals that the broad gain bandwidth results in atypical Brillouin dynamics, giving rise to distinct features in the noise spectra, and consequently modifications of the standard, single-mode fundamental linewidth of Brillouin lasers. Additionally, these features may be used for a variety of tangential applications, such as phonon spectroscopy or quality factor enhancement. Furthermore, we find that the linewidth can be significantly impacted by transferred RIN from the external pump in Brillouin lasers that lack ideal phase matching.
Brillouin laser oscillators offer powerful and flexible dynamics as the basis for mode-locked lasers, microwave oscillators, and optical gyroscopes in a variety of optical systems. However, Brillouin interactions are exceedingly weak in conventional silicon photonic waveguides, stifling progress towards silicon-based Brillouin lasers. The recent advent of hybrid photonic-phononic waveguides has revealed Brillouin interactions to be one of the strongest and most tailorable nonlinearities in silicon. Here, we harness these engineered nonlinearities to demonstrate Brillouin lasing in silicon. Mor…
Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in low-power and compact microresonators has created a new field in cavity nonlinear photonics due to the marriage between acoustic and optical signal processing. Considering the fundamental differences between backward SBS and forward SBS processes, it is challenging to observe the coexistence of both processes in the same microresonator, as well as the photon noise suppression for the forward stimulated Brillouin laser (FSBL). In this paper, we demonstrate the first 20-dB-noise-squeezed FSBL generation excited by the coexisting backward SBL (BSBL) in an …
The coherent interaction between optical and acoustic waves via stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a fundamental tool for manipulating light at GHz frequencies. Its narrowband and noise-suppressing characteristics have recently enabled microwave-photonic functionality in integrated devices based on chalcogenide glasses, silica and silicon. Diamond possesses much higher acoustic and bandgap frequencies and superior thermal properties, promising increased frequency, bandwidth and power; however, fabrication of low-loss optical and acoustic guidance structures with the resonances matched to…
The demand for high-performance chip-scale lasers has driven rapid growth in integrated photonics. The creation of such low-noise laser sources is critical for emerging on-chip applications, ranging from coherent optical communications, photonic microwave oscillators remote sensing and optical rotational sensors. While Brillouin lasers are a promising solution to these challenges, new strategies are needed to create robust, compact, low power and low cost Brillouin laser technologies through wafer-scale integration. To date, chip-scale Brillouin lasers have remained elusive due to the difficul…
Optical vortices, which have been extensively studied over the last decades, offer an additional degree of freedom useful in many applications, such as optical tweezers and quantum control. Stimulated Brillouin scattering, providing a narrow linewidth and a strong nonlinear response, has been used to realise quasi-continuous wave (CW) lasers. Here, we report stable oscillation of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser based on chiral photonic crystal fibre, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes (HBMs) that carry circularly-polarized optical vortex and display circular b…
Owing to their highly coherent emission and compact form factor, Brillouin lasers have been identified as a valuable asset for applications including portable atomic clocks, precision sensors, coherent microwave synthesis and energy-efficient approaches to coherent communications. While the fundamental emission linewidth of these lasers can be very narrow, noise within dielectric materials leads to drift in the carrier frequency, posing vexing challenges for applications requiring ultra-stable emission. A unified understanding of Brillouin laser performance may provide critical insights to rea…
We investigate the Relative Intensity Noise (RIN) properties of a multi-Stokes Brillouin fiber ring laser. We experimentally analyse intensity noise of each Stokes waves and study the noise dynamics of the cascaded Brillouin scattering process. We observe up to 20 dB/Hz intensity noise reduction compared to that of the RIN input pump laser. We examine the impact of the fiber ring quality factor on the laser RIN features such as amplitude reduction and relaxation frequency. A numerical model based on a set of coupled-mode equations replicate the experimental observations; confirming the class B…
The long-term lasing dynamics of Brillouin Fiber Lasers was recently shown to be governed by an intrinsic thermal feedback which stabilizes the lasing frequency at the lower half of the gain line. We show that this feedback can be utilized by means of pump modulation to greatly control this dynamics. Specifically, we demonstrate experimentally a bi-stable fiber laser where switching between lasing modes is possible by either controlling the cavity length or pump power. An inherent hysteretic response ensures the long-term stability of the laser in each mode. Excellent agreement is found betwee…
Laser linewidth is of central importance in spectroscopy, frequency metrology and all applications of lasers requiring high coherence. It is also of fundamental importance, because the Schawlow-Townes laser linewidth limit is of quantum origin. Recently, a theory of stimulated Brillouin laser (SBL) linewidth has been reported. While the SBL linewidth formula exhibits power and optical Q factor dependences that are identical to the Schawlow-Townes formula, a source of noise not present in two-level lasers, phonon occupancy of the Brillouin mechanical mode, is predicted to be the dominant SBL li…
By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise …
The dynamics of cascaded-order Brillouin lasers make them ideal for applications such as rotation sensing, highly coherent optical communications, and low-noise microwave signal synthesis. Remark- ably, when implemented at the chip-scale, recent experimental studies have revealed that Brillouin lasers can operate in the fundamental linewidth regime where optomechanical and quantum noise sources dominate. To explore new opportunities for enhanced performance, we formulate a simple model to describe the physics of cascaded Brillouin lasers based on the coupled mode dynamics governed by electrost…
We demonstrate that the implementation of phase-locked loop forbidding multimode operation of a long Brillouin resonator also leads to a dramatic reduction of the optical phase noise of the pump itself. In the case of a continuous Er,Yb:glass laser, a reduction by more than 90 dB at 100 Hz of the carrier is observed. This yields an optical linewidth estimated narrower than 2 Hz for the pump laser. The method being independent of the laser wavelength, it can be applied to almost any laser.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) lasers, through their unique linewidth narrowing properties, are an ideal candidate to create highly-coherent waveguide integrated sources. In particular, cascaded-order Brillouin lasers show promise for multi-line emission, low-noise microwave generation and other optical comb applications. Photonic integration of these lasers can dramatically improve their stability to environme…

Stimulated Brillouin scattering provides optical gain for efficient and narrow-linewidth lasers in high-Q microresonator systems. However, the thermal dependence of the Brillouin process, as well as the microresonator, impose strict temperature control requirements for long-term frequency-stable operation. Here, we study Brillouin back action and use it to both measure and phase-sensitively lock modal temperature to a reference temperature defined by the Brillouin phase-matching condition. At a specific lasing wavelength, the reference temperature can be precisely set by adjusting resonator fr…
Photonically integrated resonators are promising as a platform for enabling ultranarrow linewidth lasers in a compact form factor. Owing to their small size, these integrated resonators suffer from thermal noise that limits the frequency stability of the optical mode to ~100 kHz. Here, we demonstrate an integrated stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) laser based on a large mode-volume annulus resonator that realizes an ultranarrow thermal-noise-limited linewidth of 270 Hz. In practice, yet narrower linewidths are required before integrated lasers can be truly useful for applications such as o…
An analogous laser action of magnons would be a subject of interest and is crucial for the study of nonlinear magnons spintronics. Here, we demonstrate the magnon laser behavior based on Brillouin light scattering in a ferrimagnetic insulator sphere which supports optical whispering gallery modes and magnon resonances. We show that the excited magnon plays what has traditionally been the role of the Stokes wave and is coherently amplified during the Brillouin scattering process, making magnon laser possible. Furthermore, the stimulating excited magnon number increasing exponentially with the i…
We have developed a conceptual design for an Active Fast Light Fiber Optic Sensor (AFLIFOS) that can perform simultaneously or separately as a gyroscope (differential mode effect) and a sensor for acceleration, strain, and other common mode effects. Two Brillouin lasers in opposite directions and separated in frequency by several free spectral ranges are used for this sensor. By coupling two auxiliary resonators to the primary fiber resonator, we produce superluminal effects for two laser modes. We develop a detailed theoretical model for optimizing the design of the AFLIFOS, and show that the…
Narrow linewidth visible light lasers are critical for atomic, molecular and optical (AMO) applications including atomic clocks, quantum computing, atomic and molecular spectroscopy, and sensing. Historically, such lasers are implemented at the tabletop scale, using semiconductor lasers stabilized to large optical reference cavities. Photonic integration of high spectral-purity visible light sources will enable experiments to increase in complexity and scale. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is a promising approach to realize highly coherent on-chip visible light laser emission. While pro…
As self-sustained oscillators, lasers possess the unusual ability to spontaneously synchronize. These nonlinear dynamics are the basis for a simple yet powerful stabilization technique known as injection locking, in which a laser's frequency and phase can be controlled by an injected signal. Due to its inherent simplicity and favorable noise characteristics, injection locking has become a workhorse for coherent amplification and high-fidelity signal synthesis in applications ranging from precision atomic spectroscopy to distributed sensing. Within integrated photonics, however, these injection…

We frequency stabilize the output of a miniature stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) laser to rubidium atoms in a microfabricated cell to realize a laser system with frequency stability at the $10^{-11}$ level over seven decades in averaging time. In addition, our system has the advantages of robustness, low cost and the potential for integration that would lead to still further miniaturization. The SBS laser operating at 1560 nm exhibits a spectral linewidth of 820 Hz, but its frequency drifts over a few MHz on the 1 hour timescale. By locking the second harmonic of the SBS laser to the Rb …
Examining the physical properties of materials - particularly of toxic liquids - under a wide range of thermodynamic states is a challenging problem due to the extreme conditions the material has to be exposed to. Such temperature and pressure regimes, which result in a change of refractive index and sound velocity can be accessed by optoacoustic interactions such as Brillouin-Mandelstam scattering. Here we experimentally demonstrate Brillouin-Mandelstam measurements of nanoliter volumes of liquids in extreme thermodynamic regimes. We use a fully-sealed liquid-core optical fiber containing car…
We report a technique based upon the cavity ringdown method that enables to characterize the Brillouin gain coefficient directly in a laser cavity. Material gain, optical cavity parameters and lasing properties can be extracted from measurements whithin a single experiment.
We present a numerical method for modelling noise in Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS). The model applies to dynamic cases such as optical pulses, and accounts for both thermal noise and phase noise from the input lasers. Using this model, we compute the statistical properties of the optical and acoustic power in the pulsed spontaneous and stimulated Brillouin cases, and investigate the effects of gain and pulse width on noise levels. We find that thermal noise plays an important role in the statistical properties of the fields, and that laser phase noise impacts the SBS interaction when t…

Frequency- and time-domain Brillouin scattering spectroscopy are powerful tools to read out the mechanical properties of complex systems in material and life sciences. Indeed, coherent acoustic phonons in the time-domain method offer superior depth resolution and a stronger signal than incoherent acoustic phonons in the frequency-domain method. However, it does not allow multichannel detection and, therefore, falls short in signal acquisition speed. Here, we present Brillouin scattering spectroscopy that spans the time and frequency domains to allow the multichannel detection of Brillouin scat…
Over the last decade, optical atomic clocks have surpassed their microwave counterparts and now offer the ability to measure time with an increase in precision of two orders of magnitude or more. This performance increase is compelling not only for enabling new science, such as geodetic measurements of the earth, searches for dark matter, and investigations into possible long-term variations of fundamental physics constants but also for revolutionizing existing technology, such as the global positioning system (GPS). A significant remaining challenge is to transition these optical clocks to no…

Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) offers among the highest nonlinear gains in solid materials and has demonstrated advanced photonics functionalities in waveguides. The large compressibility of gases suggests that SBS may gain in efficiency with respect to condensed materials. Here, by using a gas-filled hollow-core fibre at high pressure, we achieve a strong Brillouin amplification per unit length, exceeding by 6 times the gain observed in fibres with a solid silica core. This large amplification benefits from a higher molecular density and a lower acoustic attenuation at higher pressure,…
