We investigate the internal structure of the pion, including the contributions from one dynamical gluon, using the basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) approach. By solving a light-front QCD Hamiltonian with a three-dimensional confining potential, we obtain the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) for both the quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock sectors. These wavefunctions are then employed to compute the unpolarized generalized parton distributions (GPDs) and the transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions (TMDs) of valence quarks and gluons. We also extract the transverse spatial distributions, providing the squared radii of quark and gluon densities in the impact-parameter space. This work contributes toward a three-dimensional understanding of the pion's internal structure in both momentum and coordinate space.
We study the particle production in the early stage of the ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. To this end the Boltzmann kinetic equations for gluons and pions with elastic rescattering are considered together with a simple model for the parton-hadron conversion process (hadronisation). It is shown that the overpopulation of the gluon phase space in the initial state leads to an intermediate stage of Bose enhancement in the low-momentum gluon sector which due to the gluon-pion conversion process is then reflected in the final distribution function of pions. This pattern is very similar to …
We investigate two-pion Bose-Einstein correlations of quark-gluon plasma droplet sources in single-event measurements. We find that the distribution of the fluctuation between correlation functions of the single- and mixed-events provide useful signals to detect the granular structure of the source.
The Nucleon-Nucleon interaction in the singlet ($^1 S_0$) and triplet ($^3 S_1$) channels have been studied in the framework of Relativistic Harmonic Model using the Resonating Group Method in Born-Oppenheimer approximation. The full Hamiltonian consists of the kinetic energy, two body confinement potential, confined one gluon exchange potential and one pion exchange potential. Contribution of Confined One Gluon Exchange Potential and One Pion Exchange Potential to the adiabatic nucleon-nucleon interaction potential is discussed.
In this work, we investigate the gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon, in addition to the improved result of the valence-quark ones, in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model (NL$χ$QM), in which the momentum dependence of the quark interactions is properly taken into account. We then analyze the gluon distribution functions, generated dynamically through the splitting functions in the DGLAP QCD evolution. By comparing with the recent lattice QCD results and JAM global analyses, it is found that the present numerical results for the gluon parton distribution functions for…
We present a microscopic approach to dynamical pionisation of the hot quark-gluon matter formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. The time evolution of the system is described assuming that quarks undergo Brownian motion in a thermal bath provided by the gluons. The rate of hadronization as well as the time dependence of the temperature of the system are seen to be quite sensitive to the QCD $Λ$ parameter. Even in a non-equilibrium scenario, we find that there appears a clear hint of a first order phase transition.
The gluon distributions of the pion obtained from various global fits exhibit large variations among them. Within the framework of the color evaporation model, we show that the existing pion-induced $J/ψ$ production data, usually not included in the global fits, can impose useful additional constraints on the pion parton distribution functions (PDFs). In particular, these data can probe the pion's gluon densities at large $x$. Existing pion-induced $J/ψ$ data covering a broad range of beam momenta are compared with next-to-leading-order QCD calculations using various sets of pion PDFs. It is f…
We present the first determination of the $x$-dependent pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach. We use lattice ensembles with 2+1+1 flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration, at two lattice spacings $a\approx 0.12$ and 0.15~fm and three pion masses $M_π\approx 220$, 310 and 690 MeV. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.29 GeV. We find that the dependence of the pion gluon parton distribution on lattice spacing and pion mass is mild. We compare our resu…
We present the $x$-dependent nucleon and pion gluon distribution from lattice QCD using the pseudo-PDF approach, on lattice ensembles with $2+1+1$ flavors of highly improved staggered quarks (HISQ), generated by MILC Collaboration. We use clover fermions for the valence action and momentum smearing to achieve pion boost momentum up to 2.56~GeV on three lattice spacings $a\approx 0.9, 0.12$ and 0.15~fm and three pion masses $M_π\approx 220$, 310 and 690~MeV. We compare our pion and preliminary nucleon gluon results with the determination by global fits.
In this paper we study the gluon and valence quark distributions in the pion and kaon in nuclear medium for various nuclear densities as well as in vacuum within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the help of the proper-time regularization scheme which simulates a confinement of QCD. The nuclear medium effect is also determined in the same model for the symmetric nuclear matter. We then analyze the gluon and valence quark distributions for the bound pion and kaon in symmetric nuclear matter as well as those in vacuum. We find that the valence quark and gluon distributions in vacuum have …
A one parameter, model confined-gluon propagator is employed in a phenomenological application of the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations to the calculation of a range of $π$- and $ρ$-meson observables. Good agreement is obtained with the data. The calculated quark propagator does not have a singularity on the real-$p^2$ axis. A mass formula for the pion, involving only the vacuum, dressed quark propagator, is presented and shown to provide an accurate estimate of the mass obtained via a direct solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation.
The leading-twist parton distribution functions of the pion and kaon are calculated for the first time using a rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations (DSEs) that self-consistently sums all planar diagrams. The non-perturbative gluon dressing of the quarks is thereby correctly accounted for, which in practice means solving the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) for the quark operator that defines the spin-independent quark distribution functions. An immediate consequence of using this dressed vertex is that gluons carry 35% of the pion's and 30% of the kaon's ligh…
We calculate the Gaussian radius parameters of the pion-emitting source in high energy heavy ion collisions, assuming a first order phase transition from a thermalized Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) to a gas of hadrons. Such a model leads to a very long-lived dissipative hadronic rescattering phase which dominates the properties of the two-pion correlation functions. The radii are found to depend only weakly on the thermalization time tau_i, the critical temperature T_c (and thus the latent heat), and the specific entropy of the QGP. The dissipative hadronic stage enforces large variations of the pi…
We examine the two-pion interferometry for a granular source of quark-gluon plasma droplets. The evolution of the droplets is described by relativistic hydrodynamics with an equation of state suggested by lattice gauge results. Pions are assumed to be emitted thermally from the droplets at the freeze-out configuration characterized by a freeze-out temperature $T_f$. We find that the HBT radius $R_{out}$ decreases if the initial size of the droplets decreases. On the other hand, $R_{side}$ depends on the droplet spatial distribution and is relatively independent of the droplet size. It increase…
We obtain the energy-momentum tensor (EMT) in the 't Hooft model of two-dimensional quantum chromodynamics. The EMT is decomposed into contributions from quark and gluon fields, with all of the (plus component of) the light front momentum being carried by the quark field. The energy is split between quark and gluon fields, with the gluon field carrying the self-energy of the dressed quarks. We consider the pion in the limit of small but non-zero quark masses -- which has previously withstood numerical treatment -- as as a concrete example. We solve for the pion wave function using a variationa…
A longitudinal double spin asymmetry for π^0 production has been measured by the PHENIX collaboration. The asymmetry is sensitive to the polarized gluon distribution and is indicated to be positive by theoretical predictions. We study a correlation between behavior of the asymmetry and polarized gluon distribution in neutral and charged pion production at RHIC.
We obtain the light meson mass spectroscopy from the light-front quantum chromodynamics (QCD) Hamiltonian, determined for their constituent quark-antiquark and quark-antiquark-gluon Fock components, together with a three-dimensional confinement. The eigenvectors of the light-front effective Hamiltonian provide a good quality description of the pion electromagnetic form factor, decay constant, and the valence quark distribution functions following QCD scale evolution. We also show that the pion's gluon densities can be probed through the pion-nucleus induced $J/ψ$ production data. Our pion part…
We point out that the existence of Glauber gluons in the $k_T$ factorization theorem can account for the violation of the Lam-Tung relation, namely, the anomalous lepton angular distribution, observed in pion-induced Drell-Yan processes. Radiations, that balance the lepton-pair transverse momentum, cause the responsible spin-transverse-momentum correlation in the Glauber-gluon background. It is argued that the Glauber effect is significant in the pion due to its unique role of being a Nambu-Goldstone boson and a $q\bar q$ bound state simultaneously. This mechanism is compared to other resoluti…
We calculate the matrix elements of the gluonic contributions to the energy-momentum tensor for a pion of mass 600 < Mpi < 1100 MeV in quenched lattice QCD. We find that gluons contribute (37 +/- 8 +/- 12)% of the pion's light cone momentum. The bare matrix elements corresponding to the trace anomaly contribution to the pion mass are also obtained. The discretizations of the energy-momentum tensor we use have other promising applications, ranging from calculating the origin of hadron spin to QCD thermodynamics.
Using a simple kinetic model we study whether a pion condensate can be formed during the hadronization of the quark-gluon plasma in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. If hadronization proceeds fast and the pion effective mass is close to zero, some pions condense into the zero momentum state. On the other hand, for the pion effective mass equal to the vacuum one or larger no onset of the Bose-Einstein condensation is observed. The constraints on the condensation process coming from the requirement of the entropy increase are discussed in detail.
In this paper we study the gluon distribution functions in nucleons and pions at a low resolution $Q^2$ scale. This is an important issue since parton densities at low $Q^2$ have always been taken as an external input which is adjusted through DGLAP evolution to fit the experimental data at higher scales. Here, in the framework of a model recently developed, it is shown that the hypothetical cloud of {\it neutral} pions surrounding nucleons and pions appears to be responsible for the characteristic valence-like gluon distributions needed at the inital low scale. As an additional result, we get…
In high energy Heavy Ion Collisions, the onset of the quark-gluon plasma is the colour glass condensate, dominated by gluons. The final state is hadronic, and dominated by pions and kaons. Here we investigate an effective approach of QCD with these bosonic fields and which can help to describe the transition of gluons into light mesons. Formally, our approach consists in integrating out the quark fields from the QCD path integral, utilizing auxiliary fields. In this way the fermionic fields are replaced by light mesons, such as the pions and sigma field. We apply our effective action to comput…
A sizable $\cos 4ϕ$ azimuthal asymmetry in exclusive di-pion production near $ρ^0$ resonance peak in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions recently has been reported by STAR collaboration. We show that both elliptic gluon Wigner distribution and final state soft photon radiation can give rise to this azimuthal asymmetry. The fact that the QED effect alone severely underestimates the observed asymmetry might signal the existence of the nontrivial correlation in quantum phase distribution of gluons.
We propose an effective lagrangian for the coupling of the neutral pion with gluons whose strength is determined by a low energy theorem. We calculate the contribution of the gluonic components arising from this interaction to the pion transition form factor $γ^*γ^*\toπ^0 $ using the instanton liquid model to describe the QCD vacuum. We find that this contribution is large and might explain the anomalous behavior of the form factor at large virtuality of one of the photons, a feature which was recently discovered by the BaBar Collaboration.
We calculate the variation of the chiral condensate in medium with respect to the quark chemical potential and evaluate the pion-nucleon sigma term via the Hellmann-Feynman theorem. The variation of chiral condensate in medium are obtained by solving the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equation for quark propagator at finite chemical potential, with different models for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator. We obtain the value of the sigma term $σ_{πN}$ = 62(1)(2) MeV, where the first represents the systematic error due to our different model for the quark-gluon vertex and gluon propagator an…
While it is commonly believed that there is a {\it direct} transition from the hadronic to a quark gluon phase at high temperature, it would be prejudicial to rule out a sequence of dynamically generated intermediate scales. Using as guide, an effective lagrangian with unconfined gluons and constituent quarks, interacting with a chiral multiplet, we examine a scenario in which the system undergoes first-order transitions at $ T_{comp}$, the compositeness scale of the pions, at $T_χ$, the scale for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking, and at $T_c$, the confinement temperature. We find that at …
The holographic light-front QCD framework provides a unified nonperturbative description of the hadron mass spectrum, form factors and quark distributions. In this article we extend holographic QCD in order to describe the gluonic distribution in both the proton and pion from the coupling of the metric fluctuations induced by the spin-two Pomeron with the energy momentum tensor in anti--de Sitter space, together with constraints imposed by the Veneziano model{\color{blue},} without additional free parameters. The gluonic and quark distributions are shown to have significantly different effecti…
Resonance production and decay into pion pairs is simulated in a non-extensive quark matter with multi-particle interactions. Final state pion spectra are found to take the form of the Tsallis distribution, in accordance with measurements. It has also been shown that, if a large number of particles with these multi-particle interactions are constrained to a constant energy hyper-surface in phase space, the one-particle distribution is the Tsallis distribution.
The transition form factor, decay width and charge form factor of pion are calculated within the model of induced nonlocal quark currents based on the assumption that the nonperturbative QCD vacuum can be characterized by a homogeneous (anti-)self-dual gluon field. It is shown that the interaction of the quark spin with the vacuum gluon field, being responsible in the model for the chiral symmetry breaking and the spectrum of light mesons, can also play the decisive role in forming the transition form factor and two-photon decay width. Asymptotic behavior of quark loops in the presence of the …
We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusi…
We study the effects of gluon saturation on pion production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions using the color glass condensate model. At high p_perp, we show that the p_perp-distribution of gluons behaves as ~ 1/(p_perp^7) in accordance with both conventional perturbative QCD calculations and experiment. Fragmentation of gluons into pions leads to a rapidity dependent depletion of pions relative to the conventional perturbative QCD predictions. We argue that these clear and systematic differences provide a signal for the onset of gluon saturation which is accessible in upcoming experime…
The contribution of the higher-twist mechanism to the large-$p_T$ inclusive gluon production cross section in $πp$ collisions is calculated in case of the principle of maximum conformality and Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie approaches in the dependence of the pion distribution amplitudes. The higher-twist cross sections obtained in the framework of the principle of maximum conformality and Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie approaches, and compared and analyzed in relation to the leading-twist cross sections and each other.
Hanburry-Brown-Twiss (HBT) correlation functions and radii of negatively charged pions from C+C, Si+Si, Cu+Cu, and In+In at lower RHIC/SPS energies are calculated with the UrQMD transport model and the CRAB analyzing program. We find a minimum in the excitation function of the pion freeze-out volume at low transverse momenta and around $E_{lab}\sim 20-30A$GeV which can be related to the transition from hadronic to string matter (which might be interpreted as a pre-cursor of the QGP). The existence of the minimum is explained by the competition of two mechanisms of the particle production, reso…
The two flavour AdS/QCD, with chiral and gluon condensates, sets in the description of the pion family and its mass spectra. Using gravity-dilaton-gluon backgrounds, entropic Regge-like trajectories for the pion family are then derived. They relate the $π$ mesons underlying configurational entropy to both the pions excitation wave mode number and the pions experimental mass spectra, yielding a reliable prediction for the mass spectra of higher excitation pion modes, to be experimentally detected.
The interaction mediated by irreducible pion and gluon exchange between constituent quarks is calculated and shown to have a strong tensor component, which tends to cancel the pion exchange tensor interaction between quarks. Its spin-spin component is somewhat weaker than the pion exchange spin-spin interaction, while its central and spin-orbit components are small in comparison to the corresponding single gluon exchange interactions. The combination of the $π-$gluon exchange interaction with the single pion exchange interaction and a weak gluon exchange interaction between constituent quarks …
We derive the nonlinear sigma model as a peculiar dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory. In this framework, pions are reformulated as higher-dimensional gluons arranged in a kinematic configuration that only probes cubic interactions. This procedure yields a purely cubic action for the nonlinear sigma model which exhibits a symmetry enforcing color-kinematics duality. Remarkably, the associated kinematic algebra originates directly from the Poincare algebra in higher dimensions. Applying the same construction to gravity yields a new quartic action for Born-Infeld theory and, applied once …
In many simulations of high-energy heavy-ion collisions on an event-by-event analysis, it is known that the initial energy density distribution in the transverse plane is highly fluctuating. Subsequent longitudinal expansion will lead to many longitudinal tubes of quark-gluon plasma which have tendencies to break up into many spherical droplets because of sausage instabilities. We are therefore motivated to use a model of quark-gluon plasma granular droplets that evolve hydrodynamically to investigate pion elliptic flows and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss interferometry. We find that the data of pion tra…
We study the distribution of gluons in transverse space in the nucleon at moderately small x (~10^{-2}). At large transverse distances (impact parameters) the gluon density is generated by the 'pion cloud' of the nucleon, and can be calculated in terms of the gluon density in the pion. We investigate the large-distance behavior in two different approaches to chiral dynamics: i) phenomenological soft-pion exchange, ii) the large-N_c picture of the nucleon as a classical soliton of the pion field, which corresponds to degenerate N and Delta states. The large-distance contributions from the 'pion…
We argue that the collinear factorization of the fragmentation functions in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions breaks down at transverse momenta kT < Qs/g due to high parton densities in the colliding hadrons and/or nuclei. We calculate, at next-to-leading order in projectile parton density and to all orders in target parton density, the double-inclusive cross section for production of a pair of gluons in the scalar J^(PC)=0^(++) channel. Using the low energy theorems of QCD we find the inclusive cross section for pi-meson production.
We perform the first global QCD analysis of pion valence, sea quark, and gluon distributions within a Bayesian Monte Carlo framework with threshold resummation on Drell-Yan cross sections at next-to-leading log accuracy. Exploring various treatments of resummation, we find that the large-$x$ asymptotics of the valence quark distribution $\sim (1-x)^{β_v}$ can differ significantly, with $β_v$ ranging from $\approx 1$ to $> 2.5$ at the input scale. Regardless of the specific implementation, however, the resummation induced redistribution of the momentum between valence quarks and gluons boosts t…
We perform the first full decomposition of the pion momentum into its gluon and quark contributions. We employ an ensemble generated by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f=2 + 1 +1$ Wilson twisted mass clover fermions at maximal twist tuned to reproduce the physical pion mass. We present our results in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme at $2\gev$. We find $\avgx_{u+d}=0.601(28)$, $\avgx_s=0.059(13)$, $\avgx_c=0.019(05)$, and $\avgx_g=0.52(11)$ for the separate contributions, respectively, whose sum saturates the momentum sum rule.
We perform a direct calculation of the gluon momentum fraction of the nucleon using maximally twisted mass fermion ensembles with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavors at a pion mass of about $370\,\mathrm{MeV}$ and a lattice spacing of $a\approx 0.082\,\mathrm{fm}$ and with $N_f=2$ flavors at the physical pion mass and a lattice spacing of $a\approx 0.093\,\mathrm{fm}$. In the definition of the gluon operator we employ stout smearing to obtain a statistically significant result for the bare matrix elements. In addition, we perform a lattice perturbative calculation including 2 levels of stout smearing to carry…
We determine the valence parton distribution function of the pion by performing a new analysis of data for the Drell-Yan process $π^- N\to μ^+μ^-X$. Compared to previous analyses, we include next-to-leading-logarithmic threshold resummation effects in the calculation of the Drell-Yan cross section. As a result of these, we find a considerably softer valence distribution at high momentum fractions $x$ than obtained in previous next-to-leading order analyses, in line with expectations based on perturbative-QCD counting rules or Dyson-Schwinger equations.
The only experimental information on the parton distribution of kaons was obtained from the scarce kaon-induced Drell-Yan cross section data. From these data, evidence for a valence $u$ quark distribution of kaon softer than that of pion was found. We study the feasibility to extract kaon's valence quark distribution via the existing kaon-induced J/psi production data. We compare the NA3 data on the K- / pi- and K+ / pi+ ratios for J/psi production on a platinum target with theoretical calculations based on the color-evaporation model. We show that the NA3 data on J/psi production provide an i…
We calculate the contribution of the higher-twist Feynman diagrams to the large-$p_T$ inclusive gluon production cross-section in $πp$ collisions in case of the running coupling and frozen coupling approaches within perturbative and holographic QCD. The structure of infrared renormalon singularities of the higher-twist subprocess cross-section is obtained and the resummed higher-twist cross- sections (Borel sum) with the ones obtained in the framework of the frozen coupling approach and leading-twist cross-section are compared and analyzed.
We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, $μ<1 GeV$. The chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a spin and isospin singlet state. We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of the candidates of in-medium QCD pha…
An effective model with pions and constituent quarks in the presence of a weak external background electromagnetic field is derived by starting from a dressed one gluon exchange quark-quark interaction.By applying the auxiliary field and background field methods, the structureless pion limit is considered to extract effective pion and constituent quark couplings in the presence of a weak magnetic field. The leading terms of a large quark and gluon masses expansion are obtained by resolving effective coupling constants which turn out to depend on a weak magnetic field. Two pion field definition…
Can one expect gamma rays rates from the QGP to be higher than from the hot hadronic gas phase? Xiong, Shuryak, Brown (XSB) calculate photon production from a hot hadronic gas via the reaction $π^- + ρ^0 \rightarrow π^- + γ$. They assume that this reaction proceeds through the a$_1$(1260). They also use their estimated a$_1$ radiative width to calculate the pion polarizability; following a connection noted previously by Holstein. However, for a$_1$(1260) $\rightarrow πγ$, the experimental radiative width is more than two times less than the value 1.4 MeV estimated and used by XSB. We describe …
Gluon dressing of the light quarks within hadrons is very strong and extremely important in that it dynamically generates most of the observable mass through the breaking of chiral symmetry. The quark and gluon parton densities, $q(x)$ and $g(x)$, are necessarily interrelated since any gluon emission and absorption process, especially dressing of a quark, contributes to $g(x)$ and modifies $q(x)$. Guided by long-established results for the parton-in-parton distributions from a strict 1-loop perturbative analysis of a quark target, we extend the non-perturbative QCD approach based on the Rainbo…
