As well-known, inner functions play an important role in the study of bounded analytic function theory. In recent years, persistence module theory, as a main tool applied to Topological Data Analysis, has received widespread attention. In this paper, we aim to use persistence module theory to study inner functions. We introduce the persistence modules arised from the level sets of inner functions. Some properties of these persistence modules are shown. In particular, we prove that the persistence modules (potentially not of locally finite type) induced by a class of inner functions have interval module decompositions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the interleaving distance of the persistence modules is continuous with respect to the supremum norm for a class of Blaschke products, which could be used to discuss the path-connectedness of Blaschke products. As an example, we provide an explicit formula for the interleaving distance of the persistence modules induced by the Blaschke products with order two.
Understanding the structure of indecomposable $n$-dimensional persistence modules is a difficult problem, yet is foundational for studying multipersistence. To this end, Buchet and Escolar showed that any finitely presented rectangular $(n-1)$-dimensional persistence module with finite support is a hyperplane restriction of an $n$-dimensional persistence module. We extend this result to the following: If $M$ is any finitely presented $(n-1)$-dimensional persistence module with finite support, then there exists an indecomposable $n$-dimensional persistence module $M'$ such that $M$ is the restr…

We study persistence modules defined on commutative ladders. This class of persistence modules frequently appears in topological data analysis, and the theory and algorithm proposed in this paper can be applied to these practical problems. A new algebraic framework deals with persistence modules as representations on associative algebras and the Auslander-Reiten theory is applied to develop the theoretical and algorithmic foundations. In particular, we prove that the commutative ladders of length less than 5 are representation-finite and explicitly show their Auslander-Reiten quivers. Furtherm…
We study distances on zigzag persistence modules from the viewpoint of derived categories and Auslander--Reiten quivers. The derived category of ordinary persistence modules is derived equivalent to that of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules, depending on a classical tilting module. Through this derived equivalence, we define and compute distances on the derived category of arbitrary zigzag persistence modules and prove an algebraic stability theorem. We also compare our distance with the distance for purely zigzag persistence modules introduced by Botnan--Lesnick and the sheaf-theoretic con…
We study the multi-dimensional persistence of Carlsson and Zomorodian and obtain a finer classification based upon the higher tor-modules of a persistence module. We propose a variety structure on the set of isomorphism classes of these modules, and present several examples. We also provide a geometric interpretation for the higher tor-modules of homology modules of multi-filtered simplicial complexes.
We develop a unifying framework for the treatment of various persistent homology architectures using the notion of correspondence modules. In this formulation, morphisms between vector spaces are given by partial linear relations, as opposed to linear mappings. In the one-dimensional case, among other things, this allows us to: (i) treat persistence modules and zigzag modules as algebraic objects of the same type; (ii) give a categorical formulation of zigzag structures over a continuous parameter; and (iii) construct barcodes associated with spaces and mappings that are richer in geometric in…
Using a result by Chazal, Crawley-Boevey and de Silva concerning radicals of persistence modules, we show that every lower semi-continuous q-tame persistence module can be decomposed as a direct sum of interval modules and that every upper semi-continuous q-tame persistence module can be decomposed as a product of interval modules.
We present a generalization of the induced matching theorem and use it to prove a generalization of the algebraic stability theorem for $\mathbb{R}$-indexed pointwise finite-dimensional persistence modules. Via numerous examples, we show how the generalized algebraic stability theorem enables the computation of rigorous error bounds in the space of persistence diagrams that go beyond the typical formulation in terms of bottleneck (or log bottleneck) distance.
We reformulate the persistent (co)homology of simplicial filtrations, viewed from a more algebraic setting, namely as the (co)homology of a chain complex of graded modules over polynomial ring $K[t]$. We also define persistent (co)homology of groups, associative algebras, Lie algebras, etc. \par Then we obtain formulas for tensor powers $T^n(M),S^n(M),Λ^{\!n}(M)$ where $M$ is a persistence module. We discuss the cyclic and dihedral powers of persistence modules, and more generally quotients of $T^n(M)$ by a group action.
We demonstrate that an equivalence of categories using $\varepsilon$-interleavings as a fundamental component exists between the model of persistence modules as graded modules over a polynomial ring and the model of persistence modules as modules over the total order of the real numbers.
We generalize the persistence diagram of Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer to the setting of constructible persistence modules valued in a symmetric monoidal category. We call this the type A persistence diagram of a persistence module. If the category is also abelian, then we define a second type B persistence diagram. In addition, we show that both diagrams are stable to all sufficiently small perturbations of the module.
We show that a pointwise finite-dimensional persistence module indexed over a small category decomposes into a direct sum of indecomposables with local endomorphism rings. As an application of this result we give new, short proofs of fundamental structure theorems for persistence modules.
Multidimensional persistence has been proposed to study the persistence of topological features in data indexed by multiple parameters. In this work, we further explore its algebraic complications from the point of view of higher dimensional indecomposable persistence modules containing lower dimensional ones as hyperplane restrictions. Our previous work constructively showed that any finite rectangle-decomposable $n$D persistence module is the hyperplane restriction of some indecomposable $(n+1)$D persistence module, as a corollary of the result for $n=1$. Here, we extend this by dropping the…
In recent work, generalized persistence modules have proved useful in distinguishing noise from the legitimate topological features of a data set. Algebraically, generalized persistence modules can be viewed as representations for the poset algebra. The interplay between various metrics on persistence modules has been of wide interest, most notably, the isometry theorem of Bauer and Lesnick for (one-dimensional) persistence modules. The interleaving metric of Bubenik, de Silva and Scott endows the collection of representations of a poset with values in any category with the structure of a metr…
The persistence diagram of Cohen-Steiner, Edelsbrunner, and Harer was recently generalized by Patel to the case of constructible persistence modules with values in a symmetric monoidal category with images. Patel also introduced a distance for persistence diagrams, the erosion distance. Motivated by this work, we extend the erosion distance to a distance of rank invariants of generalized persistence modules by using the generalization of the interleaving distance of Bubenik, de Silva, and Scott as a guideline. This extension of the erosion distance also gives, as a special case, a distance for…
The persistence barcode is a well-established complete discrete invariant for finitely generated persistence modules [5] [1]. Its definition, however, does not extend to multi- dimensional persistence modules. In this paper, we introduce a new discrete invariant: the exterior critical series. This invariant is complete in the one-dimensional case and can be defined for multi-dimensional persistence modules, like the rank invariant [2]. However, the exterior critical series can detect some features that are not captured by the rank invariant.
One of the main reasons for topological persistence being useful in data analysis is that it is backed up by a stability (isometry) property: persistence diagrams of $1$-parameter persistence modules are stable in the sense that the bottleneck distance between two diagrams equals the interleaving distance between their generating modules. However, in multi-parameter setting this property breaks down in general. A simple special case of persistence modules called rectangle decomposable modules is known to admit a weaker stability property. Using this fact, we derive a stability-like property fo…
We provide a definition of ephemeral multi-persistent modules and prove that the quotient of persistent modules by the ephemeral ones is equivalent to the category of $γ$-sheaves. In the case of one-dimensional persistence, our definition agrees with the usual one showing that the observable category and the category of $γ$-sheaves are equivalent. We also establish isometry theorems between the category of persistent modules and $γ$-sheaves both endowed with their interleaving distance. Finally, we compare the interleaving and convolution distances.
Persistence modules are a central algebraic object arising in topological data analysis. The notion of interleaving provides a natural way to measure distances between persistence modules. We consider various classes of persistence modules, including many of those that have been previously studied, and describe the relationships between them. In the cases where these classes are sets, interleaving distance induces a topology. We undertake a systematic study the resulting topological spaces and their basic topological properties.
In this paper, we introduce a persistent (co)homology theory for Cayley digraph grading. We give the algebraic structures of Cayley-persistence object. Specifically, we consider the module structure of persistent (co)homology and show the decomposition of a finitely generated Cayley-persistence module. Moreover, we introduce the persistence-cup product on the Cayley-persistence module and study the twisted structure with respect to the persistence-cup product. As an application on manifolds, we show that the persistent (co)homology is closely related to the persistent map of fundamental classe…
We develop some aspects of the homological algebra of persistence modules, in both the one-parameter and multi-parameter settings, considered as either sheaves or graded modules. The two theories are different. We consider the graded module and sheaf tensor product and Hom bifunctors as well as their derived functors, Tor and Ext, and give explicit computations for interval modules. We give a classification of injective, projective, and flat interval modules. We state Kunneth theorems and universal coefficient theorems for the homology and cohomology of chain complexes of persistence modules i…
This short note establishes explicit and broadly applicable relationships between persistence-based distances computed locally and globally. In particular, we show that the bottleneck distance between two zigzag persistence modules restricted to an interval is always bounded above by the distance between the unrestricted versions. While this result is not surprising, it could have different practical implications. We give two related applications for metric graph distances, as well as an extension for the matching distance between multiparameter persistence modules.
The classical persistence algorithm computes the unique decomposition of a persistence module implicitly given by an input simplicial filtration. Based on matrix reduction, this algorithm is a cornerstone of the emergent area of topological data analysis. Its input is a simplicial filtration defined over the integers $\mathbb{Z}$ giving rise to a $1$-parameter persistence module. It has been recognized that multiparameter version of persistence modules given by simplicial filtrations over $d$-dimensional integer grids $\mathbb{Z}^d$ is equally or perhaps more important in data science applicat…
While persistent homology has taken strides towards becoming a wide-spread tool for data analysis, multidimensional persistence has proven more difficult to apply. One reason is the serious drawback of no longer having a concise and complete descriptor analogous to the persistence diagrams of the former. We propose a simple algebraic construction to illustrate the existence of infinite families of indecomposable persistence modules over regular grids of sufficient size. On top of providing a constructive proof of representation infinite type, we also provide realizations by topological spaces …
We investigate the correspondence between generalized persistence modules and graded modules in the case the indexing set has a monoid action. We introduce the notion of an action category over a monoid graded ring. We show that the category of additive functors from this category to the category of Abelian groups is isomorphic to the category of modules graded over the set with a monoid action, and to the category of unital modules over a certain smash product. Furthermore, when the indexing set is a poset, we provide a new characterization for a generalized persistence module being finitely …

Multiparameter persistent homology has been largely neglected as an input to machine learning algorithms. We consider the use of lattice-based convolutional neural network layers as a tool for the analysis of features arising from multiparameter persistence modules. We find that these show promise as an alternative to convolutions for the classification of multidimensional persistence modules.
We conduct a study of real-valued multi-parameter persistence modules as sheaves and cosheaves. Using the recent work on the homological algebra for persistence modules, we define two different convolution operations between derived complexes of persistence modules. We show that one of these operations is canonically isomorphic to the derived tensor product of graded modules. We give formulas for computing convolutions between single-parameter interval decomposable modules. Our convolution operations are analogous to the convolution of derived complexes of constructible sheaves on $\mathbb{R}^…
We study how to obtain partial matchings using the block function $\mathcal{M}_f$, induced by a morphism $f$ between persistence modules. $\mathcal{M}_f$ is defined algebraically and is linear with respect to direct sums of morphisms. We study some interesting properties of $\mathcal{M}_f$, and provide a way to obtain $\mathcal{M}_f$ using matrix operations.
In 2009, Chazal et al. introduced $ε$-interleavings of persistence modules. $ε$-interleavings induce a pseudometric $d_I$ on (isomorphism classes of) persistence modules, the interleaving distance. The definitions of $ε$-interleavings and $d_I$ generalize readily to multidimensional persistence modules. In this paper, we develop the theory of multidimensional interleavings, with a view towards applications to topological data analysis. We present four main results. First, we show that on 1-D persistence modules, $d_I$ is equal to the bottleneck distance $d_B$. This result, which first appeared…
The stability theorem for persistent homology is a central result in topological data analysis. While the original formulation of the result concerns the persistence barcodes of $\mathbb{R}$-valued functions, the result was later cast in a more general algebraic form, in the language of \emph{persistence modules} and \emph{interleavings}. In this paper, we establish an analogue of this algebraic stability theorem for zigzag persistence modules. To do so, we functorially extend each zigzag persistence module to a two-dimensional persistence module, and establish an algebraic stability theorem f…
The use of topological persistence in contemporary data analysis has provided considerable impetus for investigations into the geometric and functional-analytic structure of the space of persistence modules. In this paper, we isolate a coherence criterion which guarantees the extensibility of non-expansive maps into this space across embeddings of the domain to larger ambient metric spaces. Our coherence criterion is category-theoretic, allowing Kan extensions to provide the desired extensions. Our main construction gives an isometric embedding of a metric space into the metric space of persis…
We introduce a new notion of persistence modules endowed with operators. It encapsulates the additional structure on Floer-type persistence modules coming from the intersection product with classes in the ambient (quantum) homology, along with a few other geometric situations. We provide sample applications to the $C^0$-geometry of Morse functions and to Hofer's geometry of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms, that go beyond spectral invariants and traditional persistent homology.
The barcode of a persistence module serves as a complete combinatorial invariant of its isomorphism class. Barcodes are typically extracted by performing changes of basis on a persistence module until the constituent matrices have a special form. Here we describe a new algorithm for computing barcodes which also keeps track of, and outputs, such a change of basis. Our main result is an explicit characterisation of the group of transformations that sends one barcode basis to another. Armed with knowledge of the entire space of barcode bases, we are able to show that any map of persistence modul…
The theory of persistence, which arises from topological data analysis, has been intensively studied in the one-parameter case both theoretically and in its applications. However, its extension to the multi-parameter case raises numerous difficulties. Indeed, it has been shown that there exists no complete discrete invariant for persistence modules with many parameters, such as so-called barcodes in the one-parameter case. To tackle this problem, some new algebraic invariants have been proposed to study multi-parameter persistence modules, adapting classical ideas from commutative algebra and …
It has been shown that $1$-parameter persistence modules have a very simple classification, namely there is a discrete invariant called a barcode that completely characterizes $1$-parameter persistence modules up to isomorphism. In contrast, Carlsson and Zomorodian showed that $n$-parameter persistence modules have no such "nice" classification when $n>1$; every discrete invariant is incomplete. Despite their incompleteness, discrete invariants can still provide insight into the properties of multiparameter persistence modules. A well-studied discrete invariant for $2$-parameter persistence mo…
By invoking the reflection functors introduced by Bernstein, Gelfand, and Ponomarev in 1973, in this paper we define a metric on the space of all zigzag modules of a given length, which we call the reflection distance. We show that the reflection distance between two given zigzag modules of the same length is an upper bound for the $\ell^1$-bottleneck distance between their respective persistence diagrams.
We give a self-contained treatment of the theory of persistence modules indexed over the real line. We give new proofs of the standard results. Persistence diagrams are constructed using measure theory. Linear algebra lemmas are simplified using a new notation for calculations on quiver representations. We show that the stringent finiteness conditions required by traditional methods are not necessary to prove the existence and stability of the persistence diagram. We introduce weaker hypotheses for taming persistence modules, which are met in practice and are strong enough for the theory still…
The notion of generalized rank invariant in the context of multiparameter persistence has become an important ingredient for defining interesting homological structures such as generalized persistence diagrams. Naturally, computing these rank invariants efficiently is a prelude to computing any of these derived structures efficiently. We show that the generalized rank over a finite interval $I$ of a $\mathbb{Z}^2$-indexed persistence module $M$ is equal to the generalized rank of the zigzag module that is induced on a certain path in $I$ tracing mostly its boundary. Hence, we can compute the g…
It has long been envisioned that the strength of the barcode invariant of filtered cellular complexes could be increased using cohomology operations. Leveraging recent advances in the computation of Steenrod squares, we introduce a new family of computable invariants on mod 2 persistent cohomology termed $Sq^k$-barcodes. We present a complete algorithmic pipeline for their computation and illustrate their real-world applicability using the space of conformations of the cyclo-octane molecule.
We consider the question of defining interleaving metrics on generalized persistence modules over arbitrary preordered sets. Our constructions are functorial, which implies a form of stability for these metrics. We describe a large class of examples, inverse-image persistence modules, which occur whenever a topological space is mapped to a metric space. Several standard theories of persistence and their stability can be described in this framework. This includes the classical case of sublevelset persistent homology. We introduce a distinction between `soft' and `hard' stability theorems. While…
