In this work, we evaluate an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to optimize a given circuit in such a way that it reduces the required communication when executed in the Distributed Quantum Computing (DQC) paradigm. We evaluate our approach for a state preparation task using Grover circuits and show that it is able to reduce the required global gates by more than 89% while still achieving high fidelity as well as the ability to extract the correct solution to the given problem. We also apply the approach to reduce circuit depth and number of CX gates. Additionally, we run experiments in which a circuit is optimized for a given network topology after each qubit has been assigned to specific nodes in the network. In these experiments, the algorithm is able to reduce the communication cost (i.e., number of hops between QPUs) by up to 19%.
In this paper we present Quanrum Encoded Quantum Evolutionary Algorithm (QEQEA) and compare its performance against a a classical GPU accelerated Genetic Algorithm (GPUGA). The proposed QEQEA differs from existing quantum evolutionary algorithms in several points: representation of candidates circuits is using qubits and qutrits and the proposed evolutionary operators can in theory be implemented on quantum computer provided a classical control exists. The synthesized circuits are obtained by a set of measurements performed on the encoding units of quantum representation. Both algorithms are a…
Quantum hardware continues to advance, yet finding new quantum algorithms - quantum software - remains a challenge, with classically trained computer programmers having little intuition of how computational tasks may be performed in the quantum realm. As such, the idea of developing automated tools for algorithm development is even more appealing for quantum computing than for classical. Here we develop a robust, multi-objective evolutionary search strategy to design quantum circuits 'from scratch', by combining and parameterizing a task-generic library of quantum circuit elements. When applie…

It has been experimentally proven that realizing universal quantum gates using higher-radices logic is practically and technologically possible. We developed a Parallel Genetic Algorithm that synthesizes Boolean reversible circuits realized with a variety of quantum gates on qudits with various radices. In order to allow synthesizing circuits of medium sizes in the higher radix quantum space we performed the experiments using a GPU accelerated Genetic Algorithm. Using the accelerated GA we compare heuristic improvements to the mutation process based on cost minimization, on the adaptive cost o…
In the context of NISQ computers - Noise Intermediate Scale Quantum, it is a consensus that the distribution of circuits among processing agents is a viable approach to get greater scalability with small machines. This approach can increase the combined computational power at the cost of dedicating qubits to get the communication between partitions. Then comes the challenge of reducing this cost of communication-based on efficient circuit partitioning strategies. In this context, this work aims to reduce the consumption of communication qubits generated during the physical partitioning of quan…
Quantum oracles play key roles in the studies of quantum computation and quantum information. But implementing quantum oracles efficiently with universal quantum gates is a hard work. Motivated by genetic programming, this paper proposes a novel approach to evolve quantum oracles with a hybrid quantum-inspired evolutionary algorithm. The approach codes quantum circuits with numerical values and combines the cost and correctness of quantum circuits into the fitness function. To speed up the calculation of matrix multiplication in the evaluation of individuals, a fast algorithm of matrix multipl…
Quantum architecture search (QAS) is desired to construct a powerful and general QAS platform which can significantly accelerate quantum advantages in error-prone and depth limited quantum circuits in today Noisy Intermediate-Scale Quantum (NISQ) era. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary-based quantum architecture search (EQAS) scheme for the optimal layout to balance the higher expressive power and the trainable ability. In EQAS, each layout of quantum circuits, i.e quantum circuit architecture(QCA), is first encoded into a binary string, which is called quantum genes later. Then, an alg…
Recent advancements in quantum computing have shown promising computational advantages in many problem areas. As one of those areas with increasing attention, hybrid quantum-classical machine learning systems have demonstrated the capability to solve various data-driven learning tasks. Recent works show that parameterized quantum circuits (PQCs) can be used to solve challenging reinforcement learning (RL) tasks with provable learning advantages. While existing works yield potentials of PQC-based methods, the design choices of PQC architectures and their influences on the learning tasks are gen…
The main objective of this paper is to improve the communication costs in distributed quantum circuits. To this end, we present a method for generating distributed quantum circuits from monolithic quantum circuits in such a way that communication between partitions of a distributed quantum circuit is minimized. Thus, the communication between distributed components is performed at a lower cost. Compared to existing works, our approach can effectively map a quantum circuit into an appropriate number of distributed components. Since teleportation is usually the protocol used to connect component…

Natural evolutionary strategies (NES) are a family of gradient-free black-box optimization algorithms. This study illustrates their use for the optimization of randomly-initialized parametrized quantum circuits (PQCs) in the region of vanishing gradients. We show that using the NES gradient estimator the exponential decrease in variance can be alleviated. We implement two specific approaches, the exponential and separable natural evolutionary strategies, for parameter optimization of PQCs and compare them against standard gradient descent. We apply them to two different problems of ground stat…
Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are promising methods to demonstrate quantum advantage on near-term devices as the required resources are divided between a quantum simulator and a classical optimizer. As such, designing a VQA which is resource-efficient and robust against noise is a key factor to achieve potential advantage with the existing noisy quantum simulators. It turns out that a fixed VQA circuit design, such as the widely-used hardware efficient ansatz, is not necessarily robust against imperfections. In this work, we propose a genome-length-adjustable evolutionary algorithm to …

We provide algorithms for efficiently addressing quantum memory in parallel. These imply that the standard circuit model can be simulated with low overhead by the more realistic model of a distributed quantum computer. As a result, the circuit model can be used by algorithm designers without worrying whether the underlying architecture supports the connectivity of the circuit. In addition, we apply our results to existing memory intensive quantum algorithms. We present a parallel quantum search algorithm and improve the time-space trade-off for the Element Distinctness and Collision problems.
Efficient methods for generating pseudo-randomly distributed unitary operators are needed for the practical application of Haar distributed random operators in quantum communication and noise estimation protocols. We develop a theoretical framework for analyzing pseudo-random ensembles generated through a random circuit composition. We prove that the measure over random circuits converges exponentially (with increasing circuit length) to the uniform (Haar) measure on the unitary group and describe how the rate of convergence may be calculated for specific applications.
Near-term large quantum computers are not able to operate as a single processing unit. It is therefore required to partition a quantum circuit into smaller parts, and then each part is executed on a small unit. This approach is known as distributed quantum computation. In this study, a dynamic programming algorithm is proposed to minimize the number of communications in a distributed quantum circuit (DQC). This algorithm consists of two steps: first, the quantum circuit is converted into a bipartite graph model, and then a dynamic programming approach (DP) is proposed to partition the model in…
Distributed quantum computing has been well-known for many years as a system composed of a number of small-capacity quantum circuits. Limitations in the capacity of monolithic quantum computing systems can be overcome by using distributed quantum systems which communicate with each other through known communication links. In our previous study, an algorithm with an exponential complexity was proposed to optimize the number of qubit teleportations required for the communications between two partitions of a distributed quantum circuit. In this work, a genetic algorithm is used to solve the optim…

Though the designing techniques are simple in the light of BV algorithm, Grover's algorithm, the improved Grover's algorithm by Long, and the distributed Grover's algorithm by Qiu et…
