It is shown that a probabilistic identity on a $σ$-compact $K$-analytic group $G$, $K$ a non-archimedean local field, is a coset identity. As an application, one concludes that compact $K$-analytic groups and various pro-$p$ groups obtained from free constructions satisfy a probabilistic Tits alternative. By means of Lie-theoretic methods, we also study torsion probabilistic identities in virtually free pro-$p$ and compact $p$-adic analytic groups.
Let $A$ be a residually finite dimensional algebra (not necessarily associative) over a field $k$. Suppose first that $k$ is algebraically closed. We show that if $A$ satisfies a homogeneous almost identity $Q$, then $A$ has an ideal of finite codimension satisfying the identity $Q$. Using well known results of Zelmanov, we conclude that, if a residually finite dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over $k$ is almost $d$-Engel, then $L$ has a nilpotent (resp. locally nilpotent) ideal of finite codimension if char $k=0$ (resp. char $k > 0$). Next, suppose that $k$ is finite (so $A$ is residually finite).…
We consider the coset poset associated with the families of proper subgroups, proper subgroups of finite index, and proper normal subgroups of finite index. We investigate under which conditions those coset posets have contractible geometric realizations.
In this paper we study double cosets of finite rank free groups. We focus our attention on cancellation types in double cosets and their formal language properties.
Motivated by questions arising in connection with branched coverings of connected smooth projective curves over finite fields, we study the proportion of fixed point free elements (derangements) in cosets of normal subgroups of primitive permutations groups. Using the Aschbacher-O'Nan-Scott theorem for primitive groups to partition the problem, we provide complete answers for affine groups and groups which contain a regular normal nonabelian subgroup.
The history, definition and principal properties of automatic groups and their generalisations to subgroups and cosets are reviewed briefly, mainly from a computational perspective. A result about the asynchronous automaticity of an HNN extension is then proved and applied to an example that was proposed by Mark Sapir.
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system of finite rank and let $J,K\subset S$. We study the rationality of the Poincaré series of the set of representatives of minimal length of $(W_J,W_K)$-double cosets of $W$: we conclude that it depends mostly on the rationality of the Poincaré series of the normalizers of finite parabolic subgroups of $W$. For affine Weyl groups, we prove that all these series are rational and we give some explicit examples.
It is shown that for any finitely generated subgroups H and K of a free group F, and for any element g in F the double coset HgK is closed in the profinite topology of F.
In a previous article by the author and P. Wesolek, it was shown that a compactly generated locally compact group $G$ admits a finite normal series $(G_i)$ in which the factors are compact, discrete or irreducible in the sense that no closed normal subgroup of $G$ lies properly between $G_{i-1}$ and $G_{i}$. In the present article, we generalize this series to an analogous decomposition of the coset space $G/H$ with respect to closed subgroups, where $G$ is locally compact and $H$ is compactly generated. This time, the irreducible factors are coset spaces $G_{i}/G_{i-1}$ where $G_{i}$ is compa…
The Picard group Γ is PSL(2,Z[i]). We have defined coset diagram for the Picard group. It has been observed that some elements of Q(i,/surd3) of the form ((a+b/surd3)/c) and their conjugates ((a-b/surd3)/c) over \mathbb{Q}(i) have different signs in the coset diagram for the action of Γ on the biquadratic field Q(i,/surd3), these are called ambiguous numbers. We have noticed that ambiguous numbers in the coset diagram for the action of Γ on \mathbb{Q}(i,/surd3) form a unique pattern. It has been shown that there are finite number of ambiguous numbers in an orbit Γα, where α is ambiguous, and t…
We derive double coset formulae for the genus and extended genus of a finitely generated nilpotent group G, using the notions of bounded and bounded above automorphisms of $\prod G_S$, which are defined relative to a fixed fracture square for G.
We develop combinatorics of parabolic double cosets in finite Coxeter groups as a follow-up of recent articles by Billey-Konvalinka-Petersen-Slofstra-Tenner and Petersen. (1) We construct a double coset system as a generalization of a two-sided analogue of a Coxeter complex and present its order structure with its local dimension function on certain connected components. As applications of double cosets to Bruhat graphs, we also prove: (2) every parabolic double coset is regular, (3) invariance of degree on Bruhat graph on lower intervals as an analogy of the one for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial…
We study the connectivity of the coset poset and the subgroup poset of a group, focusing in particular on simple connectivity. The coset poset was recently introduced by K. S. Brown in connection with the probabilistic zeta function of a group. We further Brown's study of the homotopy type of the coset poset, and in particular generalize his results on direct products and classify direct products with simply connected coset posets. The homotopy type of the subgroup poset L(G) has been examined previously by Kratzer, Thevenaz, and Shareshian. We generalize some results of Kratzer and Thevenaz, …
We study some properties of the coset poset associated with the family of subgroups of class $\leq 2$ of a nilpotent group of class $\leq 3$. We prove that under certain assumptions on the group the coset poset is simply-connected if and only if the group is $2$-Engel, and $2$-connected if and only if the group is nilpotent of class $2$ or less. We determine the homotopy type of the coset poset for the group of $4\times 4$ upper unitriangular matrices over $\mathbb{F}_p$, and for the Burnside groups of exponent $3$.
We show that the order complex of the poset of all cosets of all proper subgroups of a finite group $G$ is never $\mathbb{F}_{2}$-acyclic and therefore never contractible. This settles a question of K. S. Brown.
It is known that the Levi graph of any rank two coset geometry is an edge-transitive graph, and thus coset geometries can be used to construct many edge transitive graphs. In this paper, we consider the reverse direction. Starting from edge- transitive graphs, we construct all associated core-free, rank two coset geometries. In particular, we focus on 3-valent and 4-valent graphs, and are able to construct coset geometries arising from these graphs. We summarize many properties of these coset geometries in a sequence of tables; in the 4-valent case we restrict to graphs that have relatively sm…
Let $G$ be a group and $H_1$,...,$H_s$ be subgroups of $G$ of indices $d_1$,...,$d_s$ respectively. In 1974, M. Herzog and J. Schönheim conjectured that if $\{H_iα_i\}_{i=1}^{i=s}$, $α_i\in G$, is a coset partition of $G$, then $d_1$,..,$d_s$ cannot be distinct. We consider the Herzog-Schönheim conjecture for free groups of finite rank. We define $Y$ the space of coset partitions of $F_n$ and show $Y$ is a metric space with interesting properties. In a previous paper, we gave some sufficient conditions on the coset partition of $F_n$ that ensure the conjecture is satisfied. Here, we show that …
Consider the space of double cosets of the product of $n$ copies of $\SU(2)$ with respect to the diagonal subgroup. We get a parametrization of this space, the radial part of the Haar measure, and explicit formulas for the actions of the group of outer automorphisms of the free group $F_{n-1}$ and of the braid group of $n-1$ strings.
Topological concepts may be applied to any poset via the simplicial complex of finite chains. The coset poset C(G) of a finite group G (consisting of all cosets of all proper subgroups of G, ordered by inclusion) was introduced by Kenneth S. Brown in his study of the probabilistic zeta function P(G,s), and Brown's results motivate the study of the homotopy type of C(G). After a detailed introduction to basic simplicial topology and homotopy theory for finite posets (Chapter 2), we examine the connectivity of the coset poset (Chapter 3). Of particular interest is the fundamental group, and we p…
