Central to our understanding of stellar evolution and its impact on processes in our Galaxy and across the Universe is the study of mass loss. While the general framework is well established, recent JWST observations of objects like NGC 3132 have revealed intricate nebular structures, suggesting complex mass-loss processes likely driven by multiple star system at its core. These findings pose new challenges for the currently available investigation tools. The primary goal of this study is the first detailed comparison of the physical properties and chemical composition obtained for NGC 3132, based on the latest detailed 3D model and observations from MUSE, JWST and Spitzer. We evaluate the reliability of the traditional empirical method and photoionization model for abundances estimations, both based on the same available high-quality, spatially resolved observations. We find that the model and empirical method yield consistent results for the integrated total properties such as Te, ne and chemical abundances. However, when applied to simulated observations from the model, the empirical method fails to recover the model input abundances, providing only an approximate estimate. This discrepancy arises in part from the loss of information when summing fluxes over regions which have complex ionisation structures. This discrepancy in the case of oxygen has been estimated to be up to 35%. Moreover, the latest IR data reveal a spatial correlation between H2, c(Hb) as well as the [8.0]/[4.5] IRAC ratio. Finally, new clumps are discovered in [Ni II] 7378 Å, [Fe II] 8617 Åand [Fe III] 5270 Åemission lines.
We provide an overview of Science Verification MUSE observations of NGC 2070, the central region of the Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Integral-field spectroscopy of the central 2' x 2' region provides the first complete spectroscopic census of its massive star content, nebular conditions and kinematics. The star-formation surface density of NGC 2070 is reminiscent of the intense star-forming knots of high-redshift galaxies, with nebular conditions similar to low-redshift Green Pea galaxies, some of which are Lyman continuum leakers. Uniquely, MUSE permits the star-formation h…
In this 5th paper of the series, we examine the spectroscopy and morphology of four southern Galactic planetary nebulae Hen 2-141, NGC5307, IC 2553, and PB6 using new integral field spectroscopy data. The morphologies and ionization structures of the sample are given as a set of emission-line maps. In addition, the physical conditions, chemical compositions, and kinematical characteristics of these objects are derived. The results show that PB6 and Hen 2-141 are of very high excitation classes and IC 2553 and NGC5307 are mid to high excitation objects. The elemental abundances reveal that PB6 …
As part of our continuing study of light variability in proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), we present the results from a long-term study of nine southern hemisphere objects. We have monitored their light variations over a nine-year interval from 2010-2018. These were supplemented by data from the ASAS-SN and ASAS-3 surveys, leading to combined light curves from 2000 to 2020. Pulsation periods were found in seven of the objects, although the three shortest must be regarded as tentative. The periods range from 24 to 73 days. When compared with the results of previous studies of the light variations…
We have used the SuperCOSMOS H-alpha Survey to look for faint outer structures such as halos, ansae and jets around known planetary nebulae across 4000 square degrees of the southern Milky Way. Our search will contribute to a more accurate census of these features in the Galactic PN population. Candidate common-envelope PNe have also been identified on the basis of their microstructures. We also intend to determine more reliable distances for these PNe, which should allow a much better statistical basis for the post-AGB total mass budget. Our survey offers fresh scope to address this important…
In this paper we describe integral field spectroscopic observations of four southern Galactic Planetary Nebulae (PNe), M3-4, M3-6, Hen2-29 and Hen2-37 covering the spectral range, 3400-7000 A. We derive the ionisation structure, the physical conditions, the chemical compositions and the kinematical characteristics of these PNe and find good agreement with previous studies that relied upon the long-slit technique in their co-spatial area. From their chemical compositions as well as their spatial and kinematic characteristics, we determined that Hen2-29 is of the Peimbert Type I (He and N rich),…
From the approximately $\sim$3,500 planetary nebulae (PNe) discovered in our Galaxy, only 14 are known to be members of the Galactic halo. Nevertheless, a systematic search for halo PNe has never been performed. In this study, we present new photometric diagnostic tools to identify compact PNe in the Galactic halo by making use of the novel 12-filter system projects, J-PLUS (Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey) and S-PLUS (Southern-Photometric Local Universe Survey). We reconstructed the IPHAS (Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) Photometric H$α$ Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane) diagno…
We describe high spectral resolution, high dynamic range integral field spectroscopy of IC418 covering the spectral range 3300-8950Å and compare with earlier data. We determine line fluxes, derive chemical abundances, provide a spectrum of the central star, and determine the shape of the nebular continuum. Using photoionisation models, we derive the reddening function from the nebular continuum and recombination lines. The nebula has a very high inner ionisation parameter. Consequently, radiation pressure dominates the gas pressure and dust absorbs a large fraction of ionising photons. Radiati…
We report the discovery of a handful of optical hydrogen-poor knots in the central part of an extended infrared nebula centred on the [WO1] star WR 72, obtained by spectroscopic and imaging observations with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) images of the nebula show that it is composed of an extended almost circular halo (of $\approx6$ arcmin or $\approx2.4$ pc in diameter) and an elongated and apparently bipolar inner shell (of a factor of six smaller size), within which the knots are concentrated. Our findings indicate that WR 72 is a ne…
We present results on the star-formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass ($M_*$) relation (i.e., the "main sequence") among star-forming galaxies at 1.37$\leq$$z$$\leq$2.61 using the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey. Based on a sample of 261 galaxies with H$α$ and H$β$ spectroscopy, we have estimated robust dust-corrected instantaneous SFRs over a large range in $M_*$ ($\sim10^{9.5}-10^{11.5}M_\odot$). We find a correlation between log(SFR(H$α$)) and log($M_*$) with a slope of 0.65$\pm$0.08 (0.58$\pm$0.10) at 1.4<z<2.6 (2.1<z<2.6). We find that different assumptions for the dust cor…
The spectroscopic evolution of Hen\,3-1357, the Stingray Nebula, is presented by analysing data from 1990 to 2021. High resolution data obtained in 2021 with South African Large Telescope High Resolution Spectrograph and in 2009 with European Southern Observatory-Very Large Telescope UVES spectrograph are used to determine physical conditions and chemical abundances in the nebula. From comparison of these data with data from different epochs it is found that the intensity of highly-ionized emission lines has been decreasing with time, while the emission of low-ionization lines has been increas…
We present a detailed spectral and imaging analysis of the central $15''$ radius ($\sim 7.5 \text{ kpc}$) region of the merger galaxy NGC 6240 that makes use of all the available \textit{Chandra}-ACIS data ($0.3 - 3 \text{ keV}$ effective exposure of $\sim 190 \text{ ks}$). This region shows extended X-ray structures with lower energy counterparts imaged in CO, [O III] and H$α$ line emission. We find both photo-ionized phases of possible nuclear excitation and thermal shock-excited emission in the different large-scale components: the north-west "loop" detected in H$α$, the region surrounding …
The optical spectra of Seyfert galaxies are often dominated by emission lines excited by both star formation and AGN activity. Standard calibrations (such as for the star formation rate) are not applicable to such composite (mixed) spectra. In this paper, we describe how integral field data can be used to spectrally and spatially separate emission associated with star formation from emission associated with accretion onto an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We demonstrate our method using integral field data for two AGN host galaxies (NGC 5728 and NGC 7679) from the Siding Spring Southern Seyfer…
ABRIDGED: 2D spectroscopic MUSE data for the whole extent of NGC3132 have been reduced and analised. The dust extinction, electron densities and temperatures of the ionised gas and abundances were determined. The nebula presents a complex reddening structure with high values (c(Hb)~0.4) at the rim. Density maps are compatible with an inner high-ionisation plasma at moderate high density (~1000cm^-3) while the low-ionisation plasma presents a structure in density peaking at the rim with values ~700 cm^-3. Median Te using different diagnostics decreases according to the sequence [NII],[SII]->[SI…
We report the discovery of a pair of infrared, axisymmetric rings in the planetary nebula NGC 1514 during the course of the WISE all-sky mid-infrared survey. Similar structures are seen at visible wavelengths in objects such as the "Engraved Hourglass Nebula" (MyCn 18) and the "Southern Crab Nebula" (Hen 2-104). However, in NGC 1514 we see only a single pair of rings and they are easily observed only in the mid-infrared. These rings are roughly 0.2 pc in diameter, are separated by 0.05 pc, and are dominated by dust emission with a characteristic temperature of 160 K. We compare the morphology …
We present the results of a comprehensive, near-UV-to-near-IR Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 imaging study of the young planetary nebula (PN) NGC 6302, the archetype of the class of extreme bi-lobed, pinched-waist PNe that are rich in dust and molecular gas. The new WFC3 emission-line image suite clearly defines the dusty toroidal equatorial structure that bisects NGC 6302's polar lobes, and the fine structures (clumps, knots, and filaments) within the lobes. The most striking aspect of the new WFC3 image suite is the bright, S-shaped 1.64 micron [Fe II] emission that traces the southern interior…
Stellar kinematics is a powerful tool for understanding the formation process of stellar associations. Here, we present a kinematic study of the young stellar population in the Rosette nebula using the recent Gaia data and high-resolution spectra. We first isolate member candidates using the published mid-infrared photometric data and the list of X-ray sources. A total of 403 stars with similar parallaxes and proper motions are finally selected as members. The spatial distribution of the members shows that this star-forming region is highly substructured. The young open cluster NGC 2244 in the…
We investigate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon features in the young Galactic planetary nebula PN G095.2+00.7 based on mid-infrared observations. The near- to mid-infrared spectra obtained with the AKARI/IRC and the Spitzer/IRS show the PAH features as well as the broad emission feature at 12 μm usually seen in proto-planetary nebulae (pPNe). The spatially resolved spectra obtained with Subaru/COMICS suggest that the broad emission around 12 μm is distributed in a shell-like structure, but the unidentified infrared band at 11.3 μm is selectively enhanced at the southern part of the nebula.…
We use SDSS photometry of 73 million stars to simultaneously obtain best-fit main-sequence stellar energy distribution (SED) and amount of dust extinction along the line of sight towards each star. Using a subsample of 23 million stars with 2MASS photometry, whose addition enables more robust results, we show that SDSS photometry alone is sufficient to break degeneracies between intrinsic stellar color and dust amount when the shape of extinction curve is fixed. When using both SDSS and 2MASS photometry, the ratio of the total to selective absorption, $R_V$, can be determined with an uncertain…
We present spectroscopy of three planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Northern Spur of the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) obtained with the Double Spectrograph on the 5.1 m Hale Telescope at the Palomar Observatory. The samples are selected from the observations of Merrett et al. Our purpose is to investigate formation of the substructures of M31 using PNe as a tracer of chemical abundances. The [O III] 4363 auroral line is detected in the spectra of two objects, enabling temperature determinations. Ionic abundances are derived from the observed collisionally excited lines, and elemental abundances of nitro…
We use the IRS on Spitzer to observe the southern part of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, including the Southern Ridge, which is a photodissociation region par excellence excited by HD 37903. Five pure-rotational H2 emission lines are detected and mapped over and around the Southern Ridge in order to compare with predicted level column densities from theoretical PDR models. We find very good agreement between PDR model predictions and emission line intensities and ratios measured with Spitzer, leading us to conclude that grain photoelectric heating sufficiently warms the gas to produce the obs…
We report the analysis results of far ultraviolet (FUV) observations, made for a broad region around $α$ Vir (Spica) including the interaction zone of Loop I and the Local Bubble. The whole region was optically thin and a general correlation was seen between the FUV continuum intensity and the dust extinction, except in the neighborhood of the bright central star, indicating the dust scattering nature of the FUV continuum. We performed Monte-Carlo radiative transfer simulations to obtain the optical parameters related to the dust scattering as well as the geometrical structure of the region. T…
After 30 Doradus, N11 is the second largest and brightest nebula in the LMC. This large nebula has several OB associations with bright nebulae at its surroundings. N11 was previously mapped at the lowest rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO (J=1--0 and 2--1), and in some particular regions pointings of the $^{13}$CO J=1--0 and 2--1 lines were also performed. Using ASTE we mapped the whole extension of the N11 nebula in the $^{12}$CO J=3--2 line, and three sub-regions in the $^{13}$CO J=3--2 line. The regions mapped in the $^{13}$CO J=3--2 were selected based on that they may be exposed to the r…
Context: A complete study of the molecular and ionized gas in the environs of the nebula RCW 78 around WR 55 is presented. Aims: The aim of this work is to investigate the spatial distribution, physical characteristics, and kinematical properties of the molecular gas linked to the galactic nebula RCW 78 to achieve a better understanding of its interaction with the star and with the ionized gas. Methods: This study was based on 12CO(1-0) fully sampled observations of a region of ~0.45° in size around the star WR 55 and the nebula RCW 78 obtained with the 4-m NANTEN telescope, radio continuum ar…
M16, the Eagle Nebula, is an outstanding \HII \ region which exhibits extensive high-mass star formation and hosts remarkable "pillars". We herein obtained new $^{12}$CO $J=$1-0 data for the region observed with NANTEN2, which were combined with the $^{12}$CO $J=$1-0 data obtained using FUGIN survey. These observations revealed that a giant molecular cloud (GMC) of $\sim 1.3 \times 10^5$ \Msun \ is associated with M16, which is elongated by over 30 pc and is perpendicular to the galactic plane, at a distance of 1.8 kpc. This GMC can be divided into the northern (N) cloud, the eastern (E) filam…
