We present state-of-the-art hadron-level predictions for the deep-inelastic scat- tering process at next-to-leading-order precision for several multiplicities, con- sistently merged in one sample. For the first time at this level of accuracy, we consider both neutral and charged current deep-inelastic scattering at the Electron-Ion Collider, and present the first application of consistent next-to- leading-order merging to charged current deep-inelastic scattering in general. We critically examine inclusive predictions using multileg merging techniques, contrasting perturbative and nonperturbative uncertainties. Further, we study typical kinematic deep-inelastic scattering observables as well as jet measure- ments and 1-jettiness with realistic cuts implied by expected and past detector resolution. On the perturbative side, we see large corrections toward small vir- tualities and Bjorken-x, which can be captured by higher-multiplicity matrix elements and the merging procedure. Nonperturbative effects, while negligible in most jet observables, can reach similar size as the perturbative uncertainties around the peak of the 1-jettiness distributions especially at low values of $Q^2$ .
Uncertainties in the simulation of Higgs boson production with up to two jets at next-to leading order accuracy are investigated. Traditional uncertainty estimates based on scale variations are extended employing different functional forms for the central scale, and the impact of details in the implementation of the parton shower is discussed.
In recent times the algorithms for the simulation of hadronic collisions have been subject to two substantial improvements: the inclusion, within parton showering, of exact higher order tree level matrix elements (MEPS) and, separately, next-to-leading order corrections (NLOPS). In this work we examine the key criteria to be met in merging the two approaches in such a way that the accuracy of both is preserved, in the framework of the POWHEG approach to NLOPS. We then ask to what extent these requirements may be fulfilled using existing simulations, without modifications. The result of this st…
In this paper we consider a small-$x$ model for gluon GTMDs that we fit to data on diffractive dijet production in electron-proton collisions obtained by HERA's H1 Collaboration. Assuming a small number of free parameters, each with a physical motivation, we are able to describe those data fairly well and with this model we obtain predictions for the EIC for both electroproduction and photoproduction which may allow to further test the underlying GTMD description. In the general discussion of the impact parameter dependence we recall some subtle issues related to localization of states, choice…
High-accuracy $Υ$-meson photoproduction data from EIC and EicC experiments will allow the measurement of the near-threshold total cross section of the reaction $γp\toΥp$, from which the absolute value of the $Υp$ scattering length, $|α_{Υp}|$, can be extracted using a Vector-Meson Dominance model. For this evaluation, we used $Υ$-meson photoproduction quasi-data from the QCD approach (the production amplitude can be factorized in terms of gluonic generalized parton distributions and the quarkonium distribution amplitude). A comparative analysis of $|α_{Υp}|$ with the recently determined scatte…
The exclusive production of vector mesons and photons in $ep$ collisions is investigated considering three phenomenological saturation models based on distinct assumptions for the treatment of the dipole - hadron scattering amplitude. The latest high precision HERA data for the reduced and vector meson cross sections are used to update the saturation model proposed by Marquet - Peschanski - Soyez (MPS), which predicts that the saturation model is dependent of the squared momentum transfer $t$. The MPS predictions for the photon virtuality, energy and $t$ - dependencies of the exclusive $ρ$, $J…
In this whitepaper, we consider the model of heavy neutral leptons (HNLs) as an example to explore the potential of new physics searches at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We propose two broad categories of search strategies depending on the HNL lifetime: direct searches for the prompt decay of HNLs with a short lifetime and displaced vertex searches for long-lived ones. After identifying the most promising signals and the corresponding backgrounds, we perform a detailed simulation to estimate the sensitivity of the EIC to HNLs, accounting for detector thresholds, resolutions, and geometric a…
We investigate the potential of inclusive-jet production in deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to improve our current knowledge of nuclear parton density functions (PDFs). We demonstrate that the kinematic reach is extended similarly to inclusive DIS, but that the uncertainty of the nuclear PDFs, in particular of the gluon density at low Bjorken-x, is considerably reduced, by up to an order of magnitude compared to the present situation. Using an approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (aNNLO) calculation implemented in the program JetViP, we also make pr…
We present a first, detailed study of diffractive dijet photoproduction at the recently approved electron-ion collider (EIC) at BNL. Apart from establishing the kinematic reaches for various beam types, energies and kinematic cuts, we make precise predictions at next-to-leading order (NLO) of QCD in the most important kinematic variables. We show that the EIC will provide new and more precise information on the diffractive parton density functions (PDFs) in the pomeron than previously obtained at HERA, illuminate the still disputed mechanism of global vs.\ only resolved-photon factorization br…
The dark photon is widely predicted in many new physics beyond the Standard Model. In this work, we propose to utilize the polarized lepton cross section in neutral current DIS process at the HERA and upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to probe the properties of the dark photon. It shows that we can constrain the mixing parameter $ε<0.02$ when the dark photon mass $m_{A_D}<10 ~{\rm GeV}$ at the HERA with polarized lepton beam and this bound is comparable to the limit from the unpolarized HERA data. With the help of high integrated luminosity and high electron beam polarization of the EIC, th…
We study the longitudinal-transverse double-spin asymmetry with a $\cosϕ_S$ modulation in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering for charged and neutral pions production. We consider the particular case in which the transverse momentum of the final state hadron is integrated out. The corresponding asymmetry may be contributed by two parts: one is the convolution of the twist-3 distribution function $g_{T}(x)$ and the unpolarized fragmentation function $D_1(z)$, the other is related to the coupling of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ and the collinear twist-3 fragmentation func…
A simulation study of measurements of neutral current structure functions of the nucleon at the future high-energy and high-luminosity polarized electron-ion collider (EIC) is presented. A new series of $γ-Z$ interference structure functions, $F_1^{γZ}$, $F_3^{γZ}$, $g_1^{γZ}$, $g_5^{γZ}$ become accessible via parity-violating asymmetries in polarized electron-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS). Within the context of the quark-parton model, they provide a unique and, in some cases, yet-unmeasured combination of unpolarized and polarized parton distribution functions. The uncertainty proje…
In this work, we present an overview of experimental considerations relevant to the utilization of jets at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a subject which has been largely overlooked up to this point. A comparison of jet-finding algorithms and resolution parameters is presented along with a detailed analysis of basic jet quantities, such as multiplicities and kinematic distributions. A characterization of the energy in the event not associated with a jet is also made. In addition, detector requirements and the effects of realistic detector resolutions are discussed. Finally, an example a…
Measuring the pionic structure function is of high interests as it provides a new area for understanding the strong interaction among quarks and testing the QCD predictions. To this purpose, we investigate the feasibility and the expected impacts of a possible experiment on EicC. We show the simulation results on the statistical precision of an EicC measurement, based on the model of leading neutron tagged DIS process and the parton distribution functions of the pion from JAM18 global analysis. The simulation shows that at EicC, the kinematics cover $x_π$ range from 0.01 to 1, and $Q^2$ range …
We present a comprehensive analysis of the potential sensitivity of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) to charged lepton flavor violation (CLFV) in the channel $ep\to τX$, within the model-independent framework of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We compute the relevant cross sections to leading order in QCD and electroweak corrections and perform simulations of signal and SM background events in various $τ$ decay channels, suggesting simple cuts to enhance the associated estimated efficiencies. To assess the discovery potential of the EIC in $τ$-$e$ transitions, we study the se…
We present a detailed phenomenological study of polarized inclusive jet production in electron-proton collisions at a future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Our analysis is performed at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD using the numerical code DISTRESS and includes all relevant partonic channels and resolved photon contributions. We elucidate the role of different kinematic regions in probing different aspects of proton and photon structure and study the impact of the EIC collision energy on the measurement of polarized parton distribution functions.
An Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) would enable next-generation measurements of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) on the deuteron with detection of a forward-moving nucleon (p, n) and measurement of its recoil momentum ("spectator tagging"). Such experiments offer full control of the nuclear configuration during the high-energy process and can be used for precision studies of the neutron's partonic structure and its spin dependence, nuclear modifications of partonic structure, and nuclear shadowing at small x. We review the theoretical description of spectator tagging at EIC energies (light-front nu…
Understanding various fundamental properties of nucleons and nuclei are among the most important scientific goals at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). With the unprecedented opportunity provided by the next-generation machine, the EIC might provide definitive answers to many standing puzzles and open questions in modern nuclear physics. Here we investigate one of the golden measurements proposed at the EIC, which is to obtain the spatial gluon density distribution within a lead ($Pb$) nucleus. The proposed experimental process is the exclusive $J/ψ$ vector-meson production off the $Pb$…

We discuss modeling of generalized parton distributions (GPDs), their access from present experiments, and the phenomenological potential of an electron-ion collider. In particular, we present a comparison of phenomenological models of GPD H, extracted from hard exclusive meson and photon production. Specific emphasis is given to the utilization of evolution effects at moderate x_Bj in a future high-luminosity experiment within a larger Q^2 lever arm.
We present a new study on helicity amplitudes and cross sections for the exclusive production of $ρ$ mesons at the EIC in high-energy factorization. In this framework the analytic expression of amplitudes takes the form of a convolution between an off-shell impact factor, depicting the ($γ^* \to ρ$) transition, and a nonperturbative density, known as Unintegrated Gluon Distribution (UGD) that encodes information about the proton structure at low $x$ and evolves according to the BFKL equation. We come out with an evidence that observables sensitive to the polarizations of the incoming virtual p…
Deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) stands to enter a golden age with the prospect of precision programs at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and Large Hadron-electron Collider (LHeC). While these programs will be of considerable importance to resolving longstanding issues in (non)perturbative QCD as well as hadronic and nuclear structure, they will also have valuable implications for a wider range of physics at the Energy and Intensity Frontiers, including at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and future $νA$ facilities. In this plenary contribution, we highlight a number of salient examples of the…
We calculate cross sections for inclusive dijet photoproduction in electron-nucleus scattering in the kinematics of the future EIC and the possible LHeC, HE-LHeC, and the FCC using next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD and nCTEQ15 and EPPS16 nuclear parton density functions (nPDFs). We make predictions for distributions in the dijet average transverse momentum ${\bar p}_T$, the average rapidity $\barη$, the observed nuclear momentum fraction $x_A^{\rm obs}$, and the observed photon momentum fraction $x_γ^{\rm obs}$. Comparing the kinematic reaches of the four colliders, we find that an …
We investigate the single transverse-spin asymmetry with a $\sin (ϕ_h-ϕ_S)$ modulation in the charged Kaon produced and in $Λ$ hyperon produced SIDIS process within the theoretical framework of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization at the next-to-leading-logarithmic order. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolution of Sivers function and the unpolarized fragmentation function $D_1$ for the produced hadron. The parametrization for the proton Qiu-Sterman function, which is closely related to the Sivers function, is adopted to numerically estimate the Sivers asymmetry at the kine…
We consider the one-parameter family of jet substructure observables known as angularities using the specific case of inclusive jets arising from photoproduction events at an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). We perform numerical calculations at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy within perturbative QCD and compare our results to PYTHIA 6 predictions. Overall, we find good agreement and conclude that jet substructure observables are feasible at the EIC despite the relatively low jet transverse momentum and particle multiplicities. We investigate the size of subleading power corrections relevant a…
In this paper we investigate the impact of the higher - twist effects, resummed by the non - linear approaches for the QCD dynamics, on the inclusive observables that will be measured in future electron - ion colliders. We assume a phenomenological model for the dipole - nucleus scattering amplitude which takes into account the non - linear corrections and estimate the contribution of the different twists for $F_2^A(x,Q^2)$, $F_L^A(x,Q^2)$ and $\partial F_2^A /\partial ln Q^2$ considering different values of the Bjorken - $x$ variable, photon virtuality $Q^2$ and atomic number $A$. A compariso…
Future electron-ion colliders (eIC) will focus on the unitarity properties of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in the limit of strong nuclear absorption. Strong nuclear shadowing and a large abundance of coherent diffraction are the most striking consequences of unitarity, and here we report quantitative predictions for these effects in the kinematical range of the planned eIC.
The production of a hard dijet with small transverse momentum imbalance in semi-inclusive DIS probes the conventional and linearly polarized Weizsaecker-Williams (WW) Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) gluon distributions. The latter, in particular, gives rise to an azimuthal dependence of the dijet cross-section. In this paper we analyze the feasibility of a measurement of these TMDs through dijet production in DIS on a nucleus at an Electron-Ion Collider. We introduce the MCDijet Monte-Carlo generator to sample quark-antiquark dijet configurations based on leading order parton level cross-…
