Predicting the risk of developing breast cancer is an important clinical tool to guide early intervention and tailoring personalized screening strategies. Early risk models have limited performance and recently machine learning-based analysis of mammogram images showed encouraging risk prediction effects. These models however are limited to the use of a single exam or tend to overlook nuanced breast tissue evolvement in spatial and temporal details of longitudinal imaging exams that are indicative of breast cancer risk. In this paper, we propose STA-Risk (Spatial and Temporal Asymmetry-based Risk Prediction), a novel Transformer-based model that captures fine-grained mammographic imaging evolution simultaneously from bilateral and longitudinal asymmetries for breast cancer risk prediction. STA-Risk is innovative by the side encoding and temporal encoding to learn spatial-temporal asymmetries, regulated by a customized asymmetry loss. We performed extensive experiments with two independent mammogram datasets and achieved superior performance than four representative SOTA models for 1- to 5-year future risk prediction. Source codes will be released upon publishing of the paper.

The difficulty of detecting mitosis and its similarity to non-mitosis objects has remained a challenge in computational pathology. The lack of publicly available data has added more complexity. Deep learning algorithms have shown potentials in mitosis detection tasks. However, they face challenges when applied to pathology images with dense medium and diverse dataset. This paper introduces an optimized UV-Net architecture, developed to focus on mitosis details with high-resolution through feature preservation. Stain normalization methods are used to generalize the trained network. An F1 score …

A major limitation in applying deep learning to artificial intelligence (AI) systems is the scarcity of high-quality curated datasets. We investigate strong augmentation based self-supervised learning (SSL) techniques to address this problem. Using breast cancer detection as an example, we first identify a mammogram-specific transformation paradigm and then systematically compare four recent SSL methods representing a diversity of approaches. We develop a method to convert a pretrained model from making predictions on uniformly tiled patches to whole images, and an attention-based pooling meth…
Breast cancer screening is one of the most common radiological tasks with over 39 million exams performed each year. While breast cancer screening has been one of the most studied medical imaging applications of artificial intelligence, the development and evaluation of the algorithms are hindered due to the lack of well-annotated large-scale publicly available datasets. This is particularly an issue for digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) which is a relatively new breast cancer screening modality. We have curated and made publicly available a large-scale dataset of digital breast tomosynthesis…

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death for women in the U.S. Early detection of breast cancer is key to higher survival rates of breast cancer patients. We are investigating infrared (IR) thermography as a noninvasive adjunct to mammography for breast cancer screening. IR imaging is radiation-free, pain-free, and non-contact. Automatic segmentation of the breast area from the acquired full-size breast IR images will help limit the area for tumor search, as well as reduce the time and effort costs of manual segmentation. Autoencoder-like convolutional and deconvolutional neural netw…

Breast density is an important risk factor for breast cancer that also affects the specificity and sensitivity of screening mammography. Current federal legislation mandates reporting of breast density for all women undergoing breast screening. Clinically, breast density is assessed visually using the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting And Data System (BI-RADS) scale. Here, we introduce an artificial intelligence (AI) method to estimate breast percentage density (PD) from digital mammograms. Our method leverages deep learning (DL) using two convolutional neural network arch…
Generally, human epidermal growth factor 2 (HER2) breast cancer is more aggressive than other kinds of breast cancer. Currently, HER2 breast cancer is detected using expensive medical tests are most expensive. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a computational model named convoHER2 for detecting HER2 breast cancer with image data using convolution neural network (CNN). Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and immunohistochemical (IHC) stained images has been used as raw data from the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) benchmark dataset. This dataset consists of 4873 images of H&E and IHC…
Cone-beam breast computed tomography (CT) provides true 3D breast images with isotropic resolution and high-contrast information, detecting calcifications as small as a few hundred microns and revealing subtle tissue differences. However, breast is highly sensitive to x-ray radiation. It is critically important for healthcare to reduce radiation dose. Few-view cone-beam CT only uses a fraction of x-ray projection data acquired by standard cone-beam breast CT, enabling significant reduction of the radiation dose. However, insufficient sampling data would cause severe streak artifacts in CT imag…
Breast tumor segmentation provides accurate tumor boundary, and serves as a key step toward further cancer quantification. Although deep learning-based approaches have been proposed and achieved promising results, existing approaches have difficulty in detecting small breast tumors. The capacity to detecting small tumors is particularly important in finding early stage cancers using computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning architecture called Small Tumor-Aware Network (STAN), to improve the performance of segmenting tumors with different size. The…

Ultrasonography is an important routine examination for breast cancer diagnosis, due to its non-invasive, radiation-free and low-cost properties. However, the diagnostic accuracy of breast cancer is still limited due to its inherent limitations. It would be a tremendous success if we can precisely diagnose breast cancer by breast ultrasound images (BUS). Many learning-based computer-aided diagnostic methods have been proposed to achieve breast cancer diagnosis/lesion classification. However, most of them require a pre-define ROI and then classify the lesion inside the ROI. Conventional classif…

Breast lesion detection in ultrasound is critical for breast cancer diagnosis. Existing methods mainly rely on individual 2D ultrasound images or combine unlabeled video and labeled 2D images to train models for breast lesion detection. In this paper, we first collect and annotate an ultrasound video dataset (188 videos) for breast lesion detection. Moreover, we propose a clip-level and video-level feature aggregated network (CVA-Net) for addressing breast lesion detection in ultrasound videos by aggregating video-level lesion classification features and clip-level temporal features. The clip-…
We propose a virtual staining methodology based on Generative Adversarial Networks to map histopathology images of breast cancer tissue from H&E stain to PHH3 and vice versa. We use the resulting synthetic images to build Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for automatic detection of mitotic figures, a strong prognostic biomarker used in routine breast cancer diagnosis and grading. We propose several scenarios, in which CNN trained with synthetically generated histopathology images perform on par with or even better than the same baseline model trained with real images. We discuss the potentia…

Breast cancer remains a global challenge, causing over 1 million deaths globally in 2018. To achieve earlier breast cancer detection, screening x-ray mammography is recommended by health organizations worldwide and has been estimated to decrease breast cancer mortality by 20-40%. Nevertheless, significant false positive and false negative rates, as well as high interpretation costs, leave opportunities for improving quality and access. To address these limitations, there has been much recent interest in applying deep learning to mammography; however, obtaining large amounts of annotated data p…
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer in women around the world. For diagnosis, pathologists evaluate biomarkers such as HER2 protein using immunohistochemistry over tissue extracted by a biopsy. Through microscopic inspection, this assessment estimates the intensity and integrity of the membrane cells' staining and scores the sample as 0, 1+, 2+, or 3+: a subjective decision that depends on the interpretation of the pathologist. This paper presents the preliminary data analysis of the annotations of three pathologists over the same set of samples obtained using 20x magnification and …

Deep learning-based computer-aided diagnosis has achieved unprecedented performance in breast cancer detection. However, most approaches are computationally intensive, which impedes their broader dissemination in real-world applications. In this work, we propose an efficient and light-weighted multitask learning architecture to classify and segment breast tumors simultaneously. We incorporate a segmentation task into a tumor classification network, which makes the backbone network learn representations focused on tumor regions. Moreover, we propose a new numerically stable loss function that e…

Reliable classification of benign and malignant lesions in breast ultrasound images can provide an effective and relatively low cost method for early diagnosis of breast cancer. The accuracy of the diagnosis is however highly dependent on the quality of the ultrasound systems and the experience of the users (radiologists). The leverage in deep convolutional neural network approaches provided solutions in efficient analysis of breast ultrasound images. In this study, we proposed a new framework for classification of breast cancer lesions by use of an attention module in modified VGG16 architect…

Breast cancer has become a symbol of tremendous concern in the modern world, as it is one of the major causes of cancer mortality worldwide. In this regard, breast ultrasonography images are frequently utilized by doctors to diagnose breast cancer at an early stage. However, the complex artifacts and heavily noised breast ultrasonography images make diagnosis a great challenge. Furthermore, the ever-increasing number of patients being screened for breast cancer necessitates the use of automated end-to-end technology for highly accurate diagnosis at a low cost and in a short time. In this conce…
Breast cancer is a disease that threatens many women's life, thus, early and accurate detection plays a key role in reducing the mortality rate. Mammography stands as the reference technique for breast cancer screening; nevertheless, many countries still lack access to mammograms due to economic, social, and cultural issues. Last advances in computational tools, infrared cameras, and devices for bio-impedance quantification allowed the development of parallel techniques like thermography, infrared imaging, and electrical impedance tomography, these being faster, reliable and cheaper. In the la…

Breast CT provides image volumes with isotropic resolution in high contrast, enabling detection of small calcification (down to a few hundred microns in size) and subtle density differences. Since breast is sensitive to x-ray radiation, dose reduction of breast CT is an important topic, and for this purpose, few-view scanning is a main approach. In this article, we propose a Deep Efficient End-to-end Reconstruction (DEER) network for few-view breast CT image reconstruction. The major merits of our network include high dose efficiency, excellent image quality, and low model complexity. By the d…
