Accurate simulations of thermalization in open quantum systems require a reliable representation of the bath correlation function (BCF). Numerical approaches, such as the hierarchical equations of motion and the pseudomode method, inherently approximate the BCF using a finite set of functions, which can impact simulation accuracy. In this work, we propose a practical and rigorous testing framework to assess the validity of approximate BCFs in open quantum dynamics simulations. Our approach employs a harmonic oscillator system, where the computed dynamics can be benchmarked against known exact solutions. To enable practical testing, we make two key methodological advancements. First, we develop numerical techniques to efficiently evaluate these exact solutions across a wide range of BCFs, ensuring broad applicability. Second, we introduce a moment-based state representation that significantly simplifies computations by exploiting the Gaussian nature of the system. Applications to a two-spin system and a transmon-resonator system demonstrate that our testing procedure provides error estimates that capture the qualitative trends observed in thermalization simulations. Using this methodology, we assess the performance of recently proposed BCF construction methods, highlighting both their strengths and a notable challenge posed by sub-Ohmic spectral densities at finite temperatures.
Correlations of fluctuations are the driving forces behind the dynamics and thermodynamics in quantum many-body systems. For qubits embedded in a quantum bath, the correlations in the bath are the key to understanding and combating decoherence -a critical issue in quantum information technology. However, there is no systematic method for characterizing the many-body correlations in quantum baths beyond the second order or the Gaussian approximation. Here we present a scheme to characterize the correlations in a quantum bath to arbitrary order. The scheme employs weak measurement of the bath vi…
We investigate quantum synchronization and correlations of two qutrits in one non-Markovian environment using the hierarchy equation method. There is no direct interaction between two qutrits and each qutrit interacts with the same non-Markovian environment. The influence of the temperature of the bath, correlation time, and coupling strength between qutrits and bath on the quantum synchronzation and correlations of two qutrits are studied without the Markovian, Born, and rotating wave approximations. We also discuss the influence of dissipation and dephasing on the synchronization of two qutr…
Quantum correlations between two free spinless dissipative distinguishable particles (interacting with a thermal bath) are studied analytically using the quantum master equation and tools of quantum information. Bath-induced coherence and correlations in an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space are shown. We show that for temperature T > 0 the time-evolution of the reduced density matrix cannot be written as the direct product of two independent particles. We have found a time-scale that characterizes the time when the bath-induced coherence is maximum before being wiped out by dissipation (purit…
The entanglement dynamics in a bipartite system consisting of a qubit and a harmonic oscillator interacting only through their coupling with the same bath is studied. The considered model assumes that the qubit is coupled to the bath via the Jaynes-Cummings interaction, whilst the position of the oscillator is coupled to the position of the bath via a dipole interaction. We give a microscopic derivation of the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad equation for the considered model. Based on the Kossakowski Matrix, we show that non-classical correlations including entanglement can be generated …
The decohering environment of a quantum bit is often described by the coupling to a large bath of spins. The quantum bit itself can be seen as a spin $S=1/2$ which is commonly called the central spin. The resulting central spin model describes an important mechanism of decoherence. We provide mathematically rigorous bounds for a persisting magnetization of the central spin in this model with and without magnetic field. In particular, we show that there is a well defined limit of infinite number of bath spins. Only if the fraction of very weakly coupled bath spins tends to 100\% does no magneti…
Variations of the bath energy are compared with the information flow in local dephasing channels. Special correlated initial conditions are prepared from the thermal equilibrium of the whole system, by performing a selective measurement on the qubit. The spectral densities under study are ohmic-like at low frequencies and include logarithmic perturbations of the power-law profiles. The bath and the correlation energy alternately increase or decrease, monotonically, over long times, according to the value of the ohmicity parameter, following logarithmic and power laws. Consider initial conditio…
The energy of the bosonic bath and the flow of quantum information are analyzed over short and long times in local dephasing channels for special correlated or factorized initial conditions, respectively, which involve thermal states. The continuous distribution of frequency modes of the bosonic bath exhibits a spectral gap over low frequencies. The bath energy shows oscillatory behaviors around the asymptotic value and information is alternatively lost and gained by the open system. Due to the low-frequency gap, the damped oscillations become regular over long times and the frequency of the o…
A rapid restoration of the bath state is usually required to induce Markovian dynamics for an open quantum system, which typically can be realized only in limits such as weak system-bath coupling and infinitely large bath. In this work, we investigate the Markovianity of a qubit system coupled to a single-qubit bath with the qubit bath being continuously refreshed by quantum cooling. A surprising result is that there exists a finite threshold for the cooling rate at which the system transitions from non-Markovian dynamics to Markovian dynamics, which is in sharp contrast to the usual understan…
Based on the exact dynamics of a two-qubit system and environment, we investigate system-environment (SE) quantum and classical correlations. The coupling is chosen to represent a dephasing channel for one of the qubits and the environment is a proper thermal bath. First we discuss the general issue of dilation for qubit phase damping. Based on the usual thermal bath of harmonic oscillators, we derive criteria of separability and entanglement between an initial $X$ state and the environment. Applying these criteria to initial Werner states, we find that entanglement between the system and envi…
The emerging quantum technologies heavily rely on the understanding of dynamics in open quantum systems. In the Born approximation, the initial system-bath correlations are often neglected which can be violated in the strong coupling regimes and quantum state preparation. In order to understand the influence of initial system-bath correlations, we study the extent to which these initial correlations and the distance of separation between qubits influence the dynamics of quantum entanglement and coherence. It is shown that at low temperatures, the initial correlations have no role to play while…
The character of evolution of an open quantum system is often encoded in the correlation function of the environment or, equivalently, in the spectral density function of the interaction. When the environment is heterogeneous, e.g. consists of several independent subenvironments with different spectral functions, one of the subenvironments can be considered auxiliary and used to control decoherence of the open quantum system in the remaining part of the environment. The control can be realized, for example, by adjusting the character of interaction with the subenvironment via suitable paramete…
We study a driven harmonic oscillator operating an Otto cycle between two thermal baths of finite size. By making extensive use of the tools of Gaussian quantum mechanics, we directly simulate the dynamics of the engine as a whole, without the need to make any approximations. This allows us to understand the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of the engine not only from the perspective of the working medium, but also as it is seen from the thermal baths' standpoint. For sufficiently large baths, our engine is capable of running a number of ideal cycles, delivering finite power while operating very…
We study the bath correlation functions (BCFs) of open quantum systems interacting with thermal baths, in case the spectral densities (SDs) exhibit removable logarithmic singularities at low frequencies and are arbitrarily shaped at higher frequencies. The singularities consist in arbitrarily positive or negative powers of logarithmic functions, as additional factors for the power laws of the Ohmic-like SDs. If the SD vanishes sufficiently fast at high frequencies the short time behavior of the BCF is algebraic. The long time behavior of the BCF exhibits a variety of relaxations that involve i…
Controlled preparation of highly pure quantum states is at the core of practical applications of quantum information science, from the state initialization of most quantum algorithms to a reliable supply of ancilla qubits that satisfy the fault-tolerance threshold for quantum error correction. Heat-bath algorithmic cooling has been shown to purify qubits by controlled redistribution of entropy and multiple contact with a bath, not only for ensemble implementations but also for technologies with strong but imperfect measurements. However, an implicit restriction about the interaction with the b…
Quantum correlations and coherence generated between two free spinless particles in the lattice, interacting with a common quantum phonon bath, are studied. The reduced density matrix is solved using the Markov approach. We show that the bath induces correlations between the particles. The coherence induced by the bath is studied, calculating off-diagonal elements of the density matrix, spatiotemporal dispersion, purity and quantum mutual information. We find a characteristic time-scale pointing out when this coherence is maximum. In addition, a Wigner-like distribution in the phase-space (lat…
Maxwell's Demon is at the heart of the interrelation between quantum information processing and thermodynamics. In this thought experiment, a demon generates a temperature gradient between two thermal baths initially at equilibrium by gaining information at the single-particle level and applying classical feed-forward operations, allowing for the extraction of work. Here we implement a photonic version of Maxwell's Demon with active feed-forward in a fibre-based system using ultrafast optical switches. We experimentally show that, if correlations exist between the two thermal baths, the Demon …
The clock transitions (CTs) of central spins have long coherence times because their frequency fluctuations vanish in the linear order of external field noise (such as Overhauser fields from nuclear spin baths). Therefore, CTs are useful for quantum technologies. Also, the quadratic dependence of frequencies on noises makes the CT decoherence an interesting physics problem. Thus we are motivated to study the decoherence of CTs. We consider noise from spin baths, which is one of the most relevant mechanisms of qubit decoherence. Various quantum many-body methods have been developed to study the…
We study the role of bath-induced correlations in temperature estimation of cold bosonic baths. Our protocol includes multiple probes, that are not interacting, nor are they initially correlated to each other. They interact with a bosonic sample and reach a nonthermal steady state, which is measured to estimate the temperature of the sample. It is well known that in the steady state such noninteracting probes may get correlated to each other and even entangled. Nonetheless, the impact of these correlations in metrology has not been deeply investigated yet. Here, we examine their role for therm…
We consider a problem of description of quantum correlations and dispersions of subsystems of complex open systems. Based on our previous results we proposed a method to evaluate pure quantum contributions from total statistical characteristics of two coupled oscillators interacting with thermal reservoirs. The natural way to extract pure quantum characteristic of the system under study is a calculation of difference between the total value and its pure classical part. A numerical study of temporal behavior of quantum variances and covariances from given initial states up to states in the infi…
Spin bath polarization is the key to enhancing the sensitivity of quantum sensing and information processing. Significant effort has been invested in identifying the consequences of quantumness and its control for spin-bath polarization. Here, by contrast, we focus on the adverse role of quantum correlations (entanglement) in a spin bath that can impede its cooling in many realistic scenarios. We propose to remove this impediment by modified cooling schemes, incorporating probe-induced disentanglement via alternating, non-commuting probe-bath interactions, so as to suppress the buildup of quan…
We investigate heat engines whose working substance is made of two coupled qubits performing a generalised Otto cycle by varying their applied magnetic field or their interaction strength during the compression and expansion strokes. During the heating and cooling strokes, the two qubits are coupled to local and common environments that are not necessarily at equilibrium. We find instances of quantum engines coupled to non equilibrium common environments exhibiting non-trivial connections to quantum correlations as witnessed by a monotonic dependence of the work produced on quantum discord and…

The non-equilibrium state of two oscillators with a mutual interaction and coupled to separate heat baths is discussed. Bosonic baths are considered, and an exact spectral representation for the elements of the covariance matrix is provided analytically. A wide class of spectral densities for the relevant bath modes is allowed for. The validity of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is established for global equilibrium (both baths at the same temperature) in the stationary state. Spectral measures of entanglement are suggested by comparing to the equilibrium spectrum of zero-point fluctuation…
Starting from a total Lagrangian describing an oscillator-bath system, a novel derivation of exact quantum propagator is presented. Having the quantum propagator, the exact density matrix, reduced density matrix of the main oscillator and thermal equilibrium fixed point are obtained. The problem is generalised to the cases where the main oscillator is under the influence of a classical external force. By introducing generalised auxiliary classical fields, the generalised quantum propagator or generating functional of position correlation functions is obtained.
We study the Lee-Yang zeros of the ferromagnetic Ising bath via the interaction with the two probe spins. Similarly as in paper [Bo-Bo Wei, Ren-Bao Liu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 185701 (2012)] the problem of detecting the zeros is reduced to the exploration of time evolution of probe spins. As a result, the relation between the Lee-Yang zeros of the bath and correlation functions of the probe system is obtained. Also we obtain relation between the Lee-Yang zeros and values of the entanglement of probe spins. We apply these results to the 1D Ising spin model with nearest-neighbor interaction which…
