Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a functional imaging modality that enables the visualization of biochemical and physiological processes across various tissues. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based methods have demonstrated significant progress in directly mapping sinograms to PET images. However, regression-based DL models often yield overly smoothed reconstructions lacking of details (i.e., low distortion, low perceptual quality), whereas GAN-based and likelihood-based posterior sampling models tend to introduce undesirable artifacts in predictions (i.e., high distortion, high perceptual quality), limiting their clinical applicability. To achieve a robust perception-distortion tradeoff, we propose Posterior-Mean Denoising Diffusion Model (PMDM-PET), a novel approach that builds upon a recently established mathematical theory to explore the closed-form expression of perception-distortion function in diffusion model space for PET image reconstruction from sinograms. Specifically, PMDM-PET first obtained posterior-mean PET predictions under minimum mean square error (MSE), then optimally transports the distribution of them to the ground-truth PET images distribution. Experimental results demonstrate that PMDM-PET not only generates realistic PET images with possible minimum distortion and optimal perceptual quality but also outperforms five recent state-of-the-art (SOTA) DL baselines in both qualitative visual inspection and quantitative pixel-wise metrics PSNR (dB)/SSIM/NRMSE.

Image reconstruction for positron emission tomography (PET) is challenging because of the ill-conditioned tomographic problem and low counting statistics. Kernel methods address this challenge by using kernel representation to incorporate image prior information in the forward model of iterative PET image reconstruction. Existing kernel methods construct the kernels commonly using an empirical process, which may lead to unsatisfactory performance. In this paper, we describe the equivalence between the kernel representation and a trainable neural network model. A deep kernel method is then prop…

Deep learning based PET image reconstruction methods have achieved promising results recently. However, most of these methods follow a supervised learning paradigm, which rely heavily on the availability of high-quality training labels. In particular, the long scanning time required and high radiation exposure associated with PET scans make obtaining this labels impractical. In this paper, we propose a dual-domain unsupervised PET image reconstruction method based on learned decent algorithm, which reconstructs high-quality PET images from sinograms without the need for image labels. Specifica…

Dynamic positron emission tomography (dPET) image reconstruction is extremely challenging due to the limited counts received in individual frame. In this paper, we propose a spatial-temporal convolutional primal dual network (STPDnet) for dynamic PET image reconstruction. Both spatial and temporal correlations are encoded by 3D convolution operators. The physical projection of PET is embedded in the iterative learning process of the network, which provides the physical constraints and enhances interpretability. The experiments of real rat scan data have shown that the proposed method can achie…

Patient motion during PET is inevitable. Its long acquisition time not only increases the motion and the associated artifacts but also the patient's discomfort, thus PET acceleration is desirable. However, accelerating PET acquisition will result in reconstructed images with low SNR, and the image quality will still be degraded by motion-induced artifacts. Most of the previous PET motion correction methods are motion type specific that require motion modeling, thus may fail when multiple types of motion present together. Also, those methods are customized for standard long acquisition and coul…
The integration of Time-of-Flight (TOF) information in the reconstruction process of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) yields improved image properties. However, implementing the cutting-edge model-based deep learning methods for TOF-PET reconstruction is challenging due to the substantial memory requirements. In this study, we present a novel model-based deep learning approach, LMPDNet, for TOF-PET reconstruction from list-mode data. We address the issue of real-time parallel computation of the projection matrix for list-mode data, and propose an iterative model-based module that utilizes a …

Kernelized maximum-likelihood (ML) expectation maximization (EM) methods have recently gained prominence in PET image reconstruction, outperforming many previous state-of-the-art methods. But they are not immune to the problems of non-kernelized MLEM methods in potentially large reconstruction error and high sensitivity to iteration number. This paper demonstrates these problems by theoretical reasoning and experiment results, and provides a novel solution to solve these problems. The solution is a regularized kernelized MLEM with multiple kernel matrices and multiple kernel space regularizers…

Direct reconstruction methods have been developed to estimate parametric images directly from the measured PET sinograms by combining the PET imaging model and tracer kinetics in an integrated framework. Due to limited counts received, signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) and resolution of parametric images produced by direct reconstruction frameworks are still limited. Recently supervised deep learning methods have been successfully applied to medical imaging denoising/reconstruction when large number of high-quality training labels are available. For static PET imaging, high-quality training labels c…

Positron emission tomography (PET) reconstruction has become an ill-posed inverse problem due to low-count projection data, and a robust algorithm is urgently required to improve imaging quality. Recently, the deep image prior (DIP) has drawn much attention and has been successfully applied in several image restoration tasks, such as denoising and inpainting, since it does not need any labels (reference image). However, overfitting is a vital defect of this framework. Hence, many methods have been proposed to mitigate this problem, and DeepRED is a typical representation that combines DIP and …
Positron emission tomography(PET) image reconstruction is an ill-posed inverse problem and suffers from high level of noise due to limited counts received. Recently deep neural networks especially convolutional neural networks(CNN) have been successfully applied to PET image reconstruction. However, the local characteristics of the convolution operator potentially limit the image quality obtained by current CNN-based PET image reconstruction methods. In this paper, we propose a residual swin-transformer based regularizer(RSTR) to incorporate regularization into the iterative reconstruction fra…

Image quality of PET reconstructions is degraded by subject motion occurring during the acquisition. MR-based motion correction approaches have been studied for PET/MR scanners and have been successful at capturing regular motion patterns, when used in conjunction with surrogate signals (e.g. navigators) to detect motion. However, handling irregular respiratory motion and bulk motion remains challenging. In this work, we propose an MR-based motion correction method relying on subspace-based real-time MR imaging to estimate motion fields used to correct PET reconstructions. We take advantage of…

Positron emission tomography (PET) is widely used for clinical diagnosis. As PET suffers from low resolution and high noise, numerous efforts try to incorporate anatomical priors into PET image reconstruction, especially with the development of hybrid PET/CT and PET/MRI systems. In this work, we proposed a novel 3D structural convolutional sparse coding (CSC) concept for penalized-likelihood PET image reconstruction, named 3D PET-CSC. The proposed 3D PET-CSC takes advantage of the convolutional operation and manages to incorporate anatomical priors without the need of registration or supervise…

Image reconstruction of low-count positron emission tomography (PET) data is challenging. Kernel methods address the challenge by incorporating image prior information in the forward model of iterative PET image reconstruction. The kernelized expectation-maximization (KEM) algorithm has been developed and demonstrated to be effective and easy to implement. A common approach for a further improvement of the kernel method would be adding an explicit regularization, which however leads to a complex optimization problem. In this paper, we propose an implicit regularization for the kernel method by…

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging usually needs a full-dose radioactive tracer to obtain satisfactory diagnostic results, which raises concerns about the potential health risks of radiation exposure, especially for pediatric patients. Reconstructing the low-dose PET (L-PET) images to the high-quality full-dose PET (F-PET) ones is an effective way that both reduces the radiation exposure and remains diagnostic accuracy. In this paper, we propose a resource-efficient deep learning framework for L-PET reconstruction and analysis, referred to as transGAN-S…

Patlak model is widely used in 18F-FDG dynamic positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, where the estimated parametric images reveal important biochemical and physiology information. Because of better noise modeling and more information extracted from raw sinogram, direct Patlak reconstruction gains its popularity over the indirect approach which utilizes reconstructed dynamic PET images alone. As the prerequisite of direct Patlak methods, raw data from dynamic PET are rarely stored in clinics and difficult to obtain. In addition, the direct reconstruction is time-consuming due to the bottl…

PET detectors provide the information of the position, the energy and the timing about the decay events on the LOR. Traditional PET image reconstruction has not taken the timing information into account, only used the timing information for coincidence judgments. The high timing resolution PET detectors provide very precise TOF information, then TOF image reconstruction method which utilizes the timing information of PET detectors is so crucial for the TOF PET system. We take advantage of timing information provided by a pair of TOF PET detectors, and then reconstruct the activity distribution…

In contrast to conventional PET reconstruction our method combines the information from all detected events not only to reconstruct the dynamic evolution of the radionuclide distribution, but also to improve the reconstruction at each single time point by enforcing temporal consistency. This is achieved via optimal transport regularization where in principle, among all possible temporally evolving radionuclide distributions consistent wit…

Patient movement in emission tomography deteriorates reconstruction quality because of motion blur. Gating the data improves the situation somewhat: each gate contains a movement phase which is approximately stationary. A standard method is to use only the data from a few gates, with little movement between them. However, the corresponding loss of data entails an increase of noise. Motion correction algorithms have been implemented to take into account all the gated data, but they do not scale well, especially not in 3D. We propose a novel motion correction algorithm which addresses the scalab…

Direct reconstruction of positron emission tomography (PET) data using deep neural networks is a growing field of research. This paper proposes FastPET, a novel direct reconstruction convolutional neural network that is architecturally simple, memory space efficient, works for non-trivial 3D image volumes and is capable of processing a wide spectrum of PET data including low-dose a…
