We performed high-resolution powder neutron diffraction experiments and discovered an elliptic helical incommensurate magnetic structure in the semiconducting rare-earth magnet YbCuS2, featuring effective spin-1/2 Yb$^{3+}$ ions that form a zigzag chain. Upon cooling the sample to 0.2 K, we observed very weak magnetic peaks indexed with an incommensurate propagation vector k = [0, 0.305, 0] along the zigzag chain. The magnitude of the magnetic moment is at least one-third smaller than the expected value for the Yb$^{3+}$ Kramers doublet ground state. In an applied magnetic field, up-up-down magnetic order was observed at 7.5 T, characterized by diffraction peaks indexed with k = [0, 1/3, 0] and substantial uniform magnetic components. These observations agree well with theoretical calculations based on the density matrix renormalization group for a zigzag spin-1/2 model with isotropic Heisenberg interactions and off-diagonal symmetric $Γ$-type exchange interactions derived from material parameters. The theory elucidates the quantum mechanical nature of the incommensurate magnetism as remnant off-diagonal spin correlations in a nematic dimer-singlet state.
We report on the 63/65Cu-nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies of trivalent Yb zigzag chain compound YbCuS2. Sharp NQR signals were observed in the paramagnetic (PM) state. Below TO = 0.95 K, the multi peaks induced by the internal magnetic fields arising from the antferromagnetic (AFM) ordered moments appear and coexist with the PM signal down to 0.85 K, evidencing the first-order AFM phase transition at TO. In addition, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 abruptly decreases below TO and shows the T-linear behavior below 0.5 K. The significant lar…
We present muon-spin rotation measurements on polycrystalline samples of the complete family of the antiferromagnetic (AF) $zigzag$ chain compounds, Na$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$V$_2$O$_4$. In this family, we explore the magnetic properties from the metallic NaV$_2$O$_4$ to the insulating CaV$_2$O$_4$. We find a critical $x_c(\sim0.833)$ which separates the low and high Na-concentration dependent transition temperature and its magnetic ground state. In the $x<x_c$ compounds, the magnetic ordered phase is characterized by a single homogenous phase and the formation of incommensurate spin-density-wave order.…
Exact and rigorous solutions of the ground-state problem for the classical Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interactions on two- and three-dimensional lattices composed of zigzag (triangular) ladders are obtained in a very simple way, with the use of a cluster method. It is shown how the geometrical frustration due to the presence of triangles as structural units leads to the emergence of incommensurate spiral orderings and their collinear limits. Interestingly, these orderings are determined by a single angle (along with the signs of the interactions between neighboring spins); therefor…
We study two Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains coupled by a frustrating ``zigzag'' interaction. We are particularly interested in the regime of weak interchain coupling, which is difficult to analyse by either numerical or analytical methods. Previous density matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) studies of the isotropic model with open boundary conditions and sizeable interchain coupling have established the presence of incommensurate correlations and of a spectral gap. By using twisted boundary conditions with arbitrary twist angle, we are able to determine the incommensurabilities both in the isotro…
We introduce a matrix product state (MPS) with an incommensurate periodicity by applying the spin-rotation operator of each site to a uniform MPS in the thermodynamic limit. The spin rotations decrease the variational energy with accompanying translational symmetry breaking and the rotational symmetry breaking in the spin space even if the Hamiltonian has the both symmetries. The optimized pitch of rotational operator reflects the commensurate/incommensurate properties of spin-spin correlation functions in the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg chain and the $S=1/2$ ferro-antiferro zigzag chain.
The frustrated spin-1/2 model with weakly anisotropic ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchanges is studied with use of variational mean-field approach, scaling estimates of the infrared divergencies in the perturbation theory and finite-size calculations. The ground state phase diagram of this model contains three phases: the ferromagnetic phase, the commensurate spin-liquid phase and the incommensurate phase. The non-trivial behavior of the boundaries between these phases and the character of the phase transitions in case of weak anisotropy are deter…
We study an asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ zigzag ladder consisting of two different spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic (AFM; $J_2$, $γJ_2>0$) Heisenberg legs coupled by zigzag-shaped ferromagnetic (FM; $J_1<0$) inter-leg interaction. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group based calculations the ground-state phase diagram is obtained as functions of $γ$ and $J_2/|J_1|$. It contains four kinds of frustration-induced ordered phases except a trivial FM phase. Two of the ordered phases are valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization, which is a rather conventional order by diso…
Two-leg spin-1/2 ladder systems consisting of a ferromagnetic leg and an antiferromagnetic leg are considered where the spins on the legs interact through antiferromagnetic rung couplings $J_1$. These ladders can have two geometrical arrangements either zigzag or normal ladder and these systems are frustrated irrespective of their geometry. This frustration gives rise to incommensurate spin density wave, dimer and spin fluid phases in the ground state. The magnetization in the systems decreases linearly with $J^2_1$, and the systems show an incommensurate phase for $0.0<J_1<1.0$. The spin-spin…
We present a theoretical study of field-induced magnetic phases in the honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model, which is believed to describe the essential physics of Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling such as $A_2$IrO$_3$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$. We obtain a finite temperature phase diagram based on extensive Monte Carlo simulations and analytical calculations. We show that, while Zeeman coupling favors a symmetric non-coplanar magnetic order, thermal fluctuations enhances the stability of a collinear zigzag phase that breaks the rotational symmetry of the lattice. Our large-scale simulations…
Recent scattering experiments in the 3D Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ have shown that a relatively weak magnetic field along the crystallographic ${\bf b}$-axis drives the system from its incommensurate counter-rotating order to a correlated paramagnet, with a significant uniform `zigzag' component superimposing the magnetization along the field. Here it is shown that the zigzag order is not emerging from its linear coupling to the field (via a staggered, off-diagonal element of the ${\bf g}$-tensor), but from its intertwining with the incommensurate order and the longitudinal magnetization.…
The crystal structure and magnetic properties of the RbMnPO4 zeolite-ABW type material have been studied by temperature-dependent neutron powder diffraction, low temperature magnetometry and heat capacity measurements. RbMnPO4 represents a rare example of a weak ferromagnetic polar material, containing Mn2+ ions with TN = 4.7 K. The neutron powder diffraction pattern recorded at T = 10 K shows that the compound crystallizes in the chiral and polar monoclinic space group P21 (No. 4) with the unit-cell parameters: a = 8.94635(9) Å, b = 5.43415(5) Å, c = 9.10250(8) Å and beta = 90.4209(6)°. A clo…
In frustrated magnetic systems, the competition amongst interactions can introduce extremely high degeneracy and prevent the system from readily selecting a unique ground state. In such cases, the magnetic order is often exquisitely sensitive to the balance among the interactions, allowing tuning among novel magnetically ordered phases. In antlerite, Cu$_3$SO$_4$(OH)$_4$, Cu$^{2+}$ ($S=1/2$) quantum spins populate three-leg zigzag ladders in a highly frustrated quasi-one-dimensional structural motif. We demonstrate that at zero applied field, in addition to its recently reported low-temperatur…
The effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t_{2}$ on the ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice is studied with density-matrix renormalization-group techniques and by comparing with the phase diagram of the classical-spin variant of the same model. For a finite $t_{2}$, i.e., for a zigzag-ladder geometry, indirect antiferromagnetic interactions between the localized spins are geometrically frustrated. We demonstrate that $t_{2}$ at the same time triggers several magnetic phases which are absent in the model with nearest-neighbor hopping only. For strong $J$, we find …
We study the ground state phase diagram of a frustrated spin tube in a strong external magnetic field. This model can be viewed as two coupled zigzag spin chains, or as a two-leg spin ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor couplings along the legs, and its study is motivated by the physics of such materials as Sulfolane-Cu_{2}Cl_{4} and BiCu_{2}PO_{6}. In magnetic fields right below the saturation, the system can be effectively represented as a dilute gas of two species of bosonic quasiparticles that correspond to magnons with inequivalent incommensurate momenta at two degenerate minima…
We have studied dimerized spin systems by realizing the cluster expansion to high order. We have extended our previous dimer expansion for one-dimensional systems to cover weakly interacting chains for a quantitative description of three dimensional materials like PHCC and KCuCl_3. By comparison with recent inelastic neutron scattering data we are able to determine the exchange energies between individual spins. We have further investigated the incommensurate region of zigzag chains with isotropic exchange coupling constants near the disorder-line where the dispersion curve exhibits a minimum …
The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spi…
We present diffraction data on a single-layered manganite La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 with hole doping (x>0.5). Overdoped La(0.42)Sr(1.58)MnO4 exhibits a complex ordering of charges, orbitals and spins. Single crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal three incommensurate and one commensurate order parameters to be tightly coupled. The position and the shape of the distinct superstructure scattering points to a stripe arrangement in which ferromagnetic zigzag chains are disrupted by additional Mn4+ stripes.
The microscopic spin-spin correlations in the 2D layered spin-1 honeycomb lattice compound Na2Ni2TeO6 have been investigated by neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering. The honeycomb lattice of spin-1 Ni2+ ions, within the crystallographic ab planes, are well separated along the c axis by an intermediate Na layer whose crystal structure contains chiral nuclear density distributions of Na ions. The chirality of the alternating Na layers is opposite. Such alternating chirality of the Na layer dictates the magnetic periodicity along the c axis where an up-up-down-down spin arrangemen…
We investigate the spin-stripe mechanism responsible for the peculiar nanometer modulation of the incommensurate magnetic order that emerges between the vector-chiral and the spin-density-wave phase in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$. A combination of magnetic-torque, neutron-diffraction and spherical-neutron-polarimetry measurements is employed to determine the complex magnetic structures of all three ordered phases. Based on these results, we develop a simple phenomenological model, which exposes the exchange anisotropy as the key ingredient for the spin-stripe for…
We construct a field-theoretic description of two coupled spin-1 Heisenberg chains, starting with the known representation of a single spin-1 chain in terms of Majorana fermions (or Ising models). After reexamining the bosonization rules for two Ising models, taking particular care of order and disorder operators, we obtain a bosonic description of the spin-1 ladder. From renormalization-group and mean-field arguments, we conclude that, for a small interchain coupling, the spin-1 ladder is approximately described by three decoupled, two-frequency sine-Gordon models. We then predict that, start…
Two recent theoretical works studied the role of Kitaev interactions in the newly observed incommensurate magnetic order in the hyper-honeycomb ($β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) and stripy-honeycomb ($γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) iridates. Each of these works analyzed a different model ($JKΓ$ versus coupled zigzag chain model) using a contrasting method (classical versus soft-spin analysis). The lack of commonality between these works precludes meaningful comparisons and a proper understanding of these unusual orderings. In this study, we complete the unfinished picture initiated by these two works by solving both mod…
Motivated by recent reports of H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ as a spin-orbital-entangled quantum liquid, we investigate via a combination of density functional theory and non-perturbative exact diagonalization the microscopic nature of its magnetic interactions. We find that while the interlayer O-H-O bond geometry strongly affects the local magnetic couplings, these bonds are likely to remain symmetrical due to large zero-point fluctuations of the H positions. In this case, the estimated magnetic model lies close to the classical tricritical point between ferromagnetic, zigzag and incommensurate spiral …
Recently, the family of rare-earth chalcohalides were proposed as candidate compounds to realize the Kitaev spin liquid (KSL). In the present work, we firstly propose an effective spin Hamiltonian consistents with the symmetry group of the crystal structure. Then we apply classical Monte Carlo simulations to preliminarily study the model and establish a phase diagram. When approaching to the low temperature limit, several magnetic long range orders are observed, including the stripe, the zigzag, the antiferromagnetic (AFM), the ferromagnetic (FM), the incommensurate spiral (IS), the Multi-$\pm…
High-field magnetization of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ was measured in pulsed magnetic fields of up to 56 T in order to study its magnetic phase diagram. When the field was applied along the easy axis (the $a$-axis), two distinct transitions were observed at $H_{c1}=6.5$~T and $H_{c2}=18.0$~T. The former is a spin-flop transition typical for a collinear antiferromagnet and the latter is believed to be a spin-flip transition of canted moments. The canted moments, which are induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, anti-align for $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$ due to the ani…
The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering …
We present a unified description of the response of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ to applied magnetic fields along the orthorhombic directions ${\bf a}$, ${\bf b}$ and ${\bf c}$. This description is based on the minimal nearest-neighbor $J$-$K$-$Γ$ model and builds on the idea that the incommensurate counter-rotating order observed experimentally at zero field can be treated as a long-distance twisting of a nearby commensurate order with six spin sublattices. The results reveal that the behavior of the system for ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf a}$, ${\bf H}\parallel{\bf…
